Motown Comes to Downtown Indianapolis
Tuesday, May 6th, 2008Legendary Motown singer-songwriter Stevie Wonder came out on the campaign trail for Barack Obama last night at the American Legion Mall in downtown Indianapolis. At 9pm as a light drizzle began to fall, Wonder walked onstage and led the more than 20,000 supporters in singing Barack Obama’s name up and down the octave. “Someone give me a C,” Wonder said as he took the stage.
“I’m here because Barack Obama inspires me to write songs, encourages me that there can be an even greater America tomorrow, and encourages me that we can come together and be a far greater country that’s far more beautiful to the rest of the world than ever before,” Wonder said. “It’s for you tomorrow to make the difference in this state, to make the difference for the rest of this country and the world,” he said before sitting down to play a set.
The singer-songwriter sang three songs, including “Sign, Sealed, Delivered, I’m Yours,” a familiar tune on the Obama campaign trail and “I Wish.” Wonder Swapped in words to the hits using Obama’s name and slogans like “Yes we can.” To the tune of “Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I’m Yours,” Wonder sang, “This election sets my soul on fire - because Barack could be the president and it ain’t no lie.” It sounded better than it reads..
