Clinton Still Hillraising After March 4

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

Pundits may be debating whether Hillary Clinton’s campaign will continue beyond March 4th, but the finance team isn’t taking any chances.

The campaign has a $500 per person reception at a private DC home with several of her senate supporters set up for March 6, featuring a special performance by musician Carole King — and the NY Senator herself is set to raise money at a tbd location in the District a week later, with tickets starting at $250.

Hillary’s Loan: From a Weakness to a Strength

Friday, February 8th, 2008

When Sen Clinton disclosed on Wednesday that she’d loaned her campaign $5 million from her personal fortune just to stay competitive on February 5th, most pundits said it was a sign that the campaign was in some serious financial trouble. But $8 million dollars in online donations and 75,000 new donors later, the Clinton campaign is crediting the loan with a new fundraising resurgence — saying many potential donors had no idea she actually needed the money.

On the stump in Tacoma, WA today, Hillary used the loan as a fundraising tool to bring in even more donors. “As some of you may have of you have heard, I recently loaned my campaign some money, because I intended to be competitive going into Super Tuesday,” she said. “I think it turned out to be a good investment with all those victories across the country.”

With that, she directed those in attendance to visit her website — where they can donate even more.

Back in (the) Black

Hillary Clinton’s campaign confirms that they raised north of $6 million in 24 hours after Super Tuesday, and that the windfall means that senior advisers like campaign manager Patti Solis Doyle are once again receiving paychecks.

National Campaign Chairman Terry McAuliffe will hold a conference call at 4pm to discuss the dough that’s been rolling in — which compares favorably with Barack Obama’s $7.5 million in online donations in the 48 hours after the polls closed on February 5th.

UPDATE: on the call, McAuliffe said they’ve raised $7.5m online from 40,000 new donors since February 1, and about $6.4m since polls closed on Feb 5. Part of the money is going towards new ads that are now up in Washington, Maine, and Nebraska (those ads will feature fmr NE Sen Bob Kerrey — see below; as of right now, Hillary has no plans to visit the state before its primary). They’ll be up with ads in OH and TX early next week.

Clintons Loan Campaign $5 million in January

Wednesday, February 6th, 2008

Fox has confirmed that Senator Clinton loaned herself $5 million from her personal fortune to offset being massively outraised (and outspent in most states) by her rival Barack Obama. Campaign chairman Terry McAuliffe — himself a prodigious fundraiser — has said the Clinton camp raised $13.5m in January, compared with a whopping $32m for Obama.

In a statement, Clinton communications director Howard Wolfson says “Late last month Senator Clinton loaned her campaign $5 million. The loan illustrates Sen. Clinton’s commitment to this effort and to ensuring that our campaign has the resources it needs to compete and win across this nation. We have had one of our best fundraising efforts ever on the web today and our Super Tuesday victories will only help in bringing more support for her candidacy.”

Obama survived the lean summer months of lackluster poll numbers with big fundraising windfalls from donors; with the delegate count next to even and a big fundraising edge forcing Clinton to scramble to kick in her own cash, it’s hard to buy the Obama spin that she’s still the frontrunner.

UPDATE: Clinton herself just told reporters that she did in fact loan the campaign $5m from her own money. “We had a great month in January,” she said, “but my opponent was able to raise more money, and we intended to be competitive, and we were, and I think the results last night proved the wisdom of my investment.”

UPDATE 2: Major Garrett confirms that top staffers including campaign manager Patti Solis Doyle are going without pay to save the campaign money. There may be some relief on the horizon: spokesman Phil Singer emailed out a press report claiming that the campaign has raised more than $3 million online in the 24 hours since Feb 5; of course, Obama’s campaign raised $5m online in the same span.

Obama rallies NJ in between fundraisers

Wednesday, January 9th, 2008

Money is still pouring into the Obama campaign - despite the candidate’s New Hampshire loss. According to campaign manager David Plouffe, the campaign has raised $500,000 online since midnight. This is in addition to the $8 million the Obama campaign has raised so far this 8-day long year.

The candidate also hit Boston and New York today for a pair of fundraisers - according to Communications Director Robert Gibbs, the campaign had to cut off admission at the high dollar New York event because there were too many interested attendees.

Senator Obama hit February 5th (aka Tsunami Tuesday) state New Jersey today in between his two East Coast fundraisers, where he was greeted by a couple thousand voters inside the gymnasium at Saint Peter’s College in Jersey City. There were long lines of people who were turned away when the gym hit capacity - Obama told the crowd that some 2,000 were not able to get into the door.

The loud crowd treated the second place New Hampshire finisher with a hero’s welcome. Obama made the best of the disappointing loss. “I have to tell you that one of the useful things - and I told this to my staff yesterday - about yesterday was it reminds us that change isn’t easy,” he told the New Jersey crowd. “Change is always met by resistance by the status quo.” A young man in the crowd bellowed out, “Hillary Clinton is the status quo!”

Obama continued, “You know, there are people who are in power who don’t want to give it up. There are folks who are making money on the way things are working right now. It doesn’t make them bad people - it just means they don’t want a change.”
