Hillary’s Filly Meets Tragic End At Kentucky Derby
Saturday, May 3rd, 2008Horse racing fans were shocked and saddened by the death of Eight Belles — the filly that finished second behind Big Brown at the Kentucky Derby, only to break both front ankles shortly after crossing the finish line. Doctors were forced to euthanize the animal on the track due to the severity of the injuries.
Earlier this week, Hillary Clinton told supporters at her Louisville headquarters that she wouldn’t be able to attend the Derby, but that “I want everybody to place a little money on the filly” — drawing a cheer from those who hoped a female could finish first not only in the horse race but in the Democratic primary.
Hillary Clinton’s aides were informed of the news just as the race ended, shortly before she took off from North Carolina bound for Indianapolis. They would not say whether the New York Senator had been told of the news or had a reaction.
