McCain picks up endorsements from Gilmore, Bolton

Saturday, February 9th, 2008

Presumptive GOP nominee John McCain continued to pick up endorsements Saturday. The campaign announced that former presidential candidate/Virginia governor/current Senate candidate Jim Gilmore has put his support behind the Arizona senator ahead of Tuesday’s Old Dominion primary. While he was in the race, Gilmore coined the epithet “Rudy McRomney” during the spring to argue that McCain, Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani were indistinguishable and all lacking in conservative credentials.

But it looks like Gilmore has come around:

“There is one issue that is more pressing than all others — winning the war against radical Islamic extremism,” Gilmore said in a written statement. “And there is one man who is best prepared to step-in and serve as commander in chief from day one John McCain. I have known John McCain for years. He is a proven conservative leader with a track record of cutting taxes, eliminating wasteful government spending, upholding our traditional values, and promoting a strong national defense. I urge my fellow Virginians to join me in voting for and supporting John McCain this Tuesday.”

The campaign also announced the support of former UN Ambassador John Bolton, who they touted as “further proof that conservatives are rallying” to McCain.
