Governor Romney often stumps on the need for immigrants to learn English and how children should not be taught in their native tongue, but instead in English. So, why did Romney launch a Spanish language ad in South Florida?

“I’m gonna get in contact with every person I can in this country regardless, regardless of the language they speak to encourage them to support my campaign. But I’ll also tell those who speak other languages, learn English. One of the things I did as Governor was consistently apply to put more money in our community college programs to teach English as a second language,” Romney said, in answer to a reporter’s question today. “So, we have a lot of people who do not yet speak English, I’d encourage them to learn it, but I’m certainly gonna communicate with them to encourage them to vote for me.”

The ad was launched two days ago in the Greater Miami market and features Romney’s son, Craig Romney who did his Mormon mission in Chile and is a fluent Spanish speaker. The governor said he was proud of his son’s part in the ad called “Mi Padre” or My Father.

Craig talks about his father’s record and focuses on his family values:

“Mitt Romney’s record speaks for itself: successful as a businessman, saved the Olympics, and as Governor of Massachusetts, lowered taxes and stimulated the economy, But above all, Mitt Romney is a family man, a great father, husband and grandfather.”
