A ‘Dirty’ Fight

JACKSONVILLE, FL - Just one day before America votes for the next president, Sarah Palin and John McCain have launched an eleventh hour attack, accusing Barack Obama of wanting to “bankrupt” the coal industry based on comments he made to a San Francisco newspaper.

The Obama campaign quickly released a response from Ohio Governor Ted Strickland, who governs one of the top coal producing states in the country.

“After John McCain said he’d like to ‘transition away from coal entirely,’ his campaign is hardly in a position to criticize a coal state Senator like Barack Obama who has outlined a $150 billion investment in clean coal and other technologies to create jobs and build a new energy economy,” Strickland said in a statement.

The Obama campaign insists the clip being circulated on “right wing blogs” is “wildly edited to take it out of context.”

“In the full interview Obama actually praises coal and says that the idea of eliminating coal is ‘an illusion,’” the campaign explained.

“The line they pulled out is in the context of cap and trade program. The point Obama is making is that we need to transition from coal burning power plants built with old technology to plants built with advanced technologies - - and that is exactly the action that will be incentivized under a cap and trade program.  We know that additional work is necessary to develop and deploy these technologies. That is why Obama has argued for a robust funding program for carbon capture and sequestration.”

Moreover, the Obama campaign says his comments are “strikingly similar” to what John McCain himself has said. In fact they argue McCain went even further. At a Senate hearing on reducing greenhouse gases,” the Arizona senator said, “In a perfect world, we would like to transition away from coal entirely.”

Read the full transcript of Obama’s comments to the San Francisco Chronicle below the jump.

Barack Obama: I voted against the Clear Skies Bill. In fact, I was the deciding vote. Despite the fact that I’m a coal state. And that half my state thought that I had thoroughly betrayed them. Because I think clean air is critical and global warming is critical. But this notion of no coal, I think, is an illusion. Because the fact of the matter is is that right now we are getting a lot of our energy from coal. And China is building a coal-powered plant once a week. So what we have to do then is figure out how can we use coal without emitting greenhouse gases and carbon. And how can we sequester that carbon and capture it. If we can’t, then we’re gonna still be working on alternatives. But…let me sort of describe my overall policy. What I’ve said is that we would put a cap and trade policy in place that is as aggressive if not more aggressive than anyone out there. I was the first call for 100% auction on the cap and trade system. Which means that every unit of carbon or greenhouse gases that was emitted would be charged to the polluter. That will create a market in which whatever technologies are out there that are being presented, whatever power plants are being built, they would have to meet the rigors of that market. And the ratcheted down caps that are imposed every year. So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can. It’s just that it will bankrupt them because they’re going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that’s being emitted. That will also generate billions of dollars that we can invest in solar, wind, biodiesel, and other alternative energy approaches. The only thing that I’ve said with respect to coal–I haven’t been some coal booster. What I have said is that for us to take coal off the table as a ideological matter, as opposed to saying if technology allows us to use coal in a clean way, we should pursue it. That I think is the right approach. The same with respect to nuclear. Right now, we don’t know how to store nuclear waste wisely and we don’t know how to deal with some of the safety issues that remain. And so it’s wildly expensive to pursue nuclear energy. But I tell you what, if we could figure out how to store it safely, then I think most of us would say that might be a pretty good deal. The point is, if we set rigorous standards for the allowable emissions, then we can allow the market to determine and technology and entrepreneurs to pursue, what the best approach is to take, as opposed to us saying at the outset, here are the winners that we’re picking and maybe we pick wrong and maybe we pick right.

How could anyone talk of bankrupting an American company? This guy is crazy…really crazy.

How fortunate we are that we have to listen to these two republican brain-dead zelots only a few more hours. McCain can go back to a much larger minority in the senate and palin can go back to Alaska to face the voters and courts. Life is good.

Shame. Shame to those who cut out the quotes out of context. This country has been reduced to a country of the uneducated (or the unwilling to read). The full quote speaks for itself - if this is not a wise approach. But lying and distortions is beneath everything those who passed this country to us after much sacrifice.

Regardless of the timing or method of the release of these remarks, the message from the Democratic candidate for President could not be clearer: the Obama-Biden ticket spells disaster for America’s coal industry and the tens of thousands of Americans who work in it

Once again……McCain and Palin say what ever they can to save one vote from going Obama’s way.
McCain and Palin are the ones that are absolute hypocrites and talk out of both sides of their mouths. Obama is the one that always uses honesty despite well thought out responses.
Do you want a president that uses double speak to steal votes?

I HOPE OBAMA HAS NIGHTMARES FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE FOR ALL THE “DIRTY” CAMPAIGNING HE HAS DONE IN THIS ELECTION ALONG WITH HIS BULL DOG SIDE KICK, JOE BIDEN. HE CAME OUT OF THE BARN AT FULL THROTTLE, BELLOWING ABOUT THE “SORRY” STATE OF AMERICA, (WHICH I DESPISE HIM FOR, BTW), HATEFUL COMMENTS ABOUT SENATOR MCCAIN AND GOVERNOR SARAH PALIN AND TRYING TO GIVE THE IMPRESSION THAT WE ARE ALL IN THE POOR HOUSE. HE HAS TRIED HIS BEST TO PROMOTE CLASS WARFARE FROM THE VERY FIRST. HE LIED ABOUT CAMPAIGN FINANCING AND EVERY TIME HE GOT MIXED UP WITH HIS LIES HE BLAMED THE MCCAIN/PALIN CAMPAIGN FOR CALLING HIS HAND ON IT. HE WAS AS DIRTY AS HE COULD BE IN HIS CAMPAIGN AGAINST HILLARY CLINTON. WHAT TRASH THIS MAN IS!

Comment by Ben - PA INDEPENDANT

McCain ran a bad campaign.

McCain’s obsession with Obama throughout the campaign left his message go unheard until just two weeks from the election! The Republican party selected McCain months before the Democrats, yet he sat idle while the Democratic primary race drug on. This was a missed opportunity to get a jump start over the Dems!

Then we have the Palin VP nomination (bad idea), economic downturn and McCain suspending his campaign (why?). The recent Palin mud slinging has been no benefit to the party. He has yet to convince the american people his policies are different from Bush. It’s time for McCain to lick his wounds and retreat. The Republicans need to regroup, define their vision and start over in 2012.

Comment by Gio Pea

So… after reading the whole thing - it still sounds to me like he wants to tax coal plant operators out of existance. And he points out that his plan is far more aggressive than any other, which would include McCain’s. Sounds like Strickland in the one who needs to read it again…

Comment by jezabella

Just more proof how desperate & despicable McCain/Palin are to win. The STILL ARE NOT talking about the issues. All they do is sling mud. They just don’t get it - the public wants to know WHAT DO THEY INTEND TO DO about the issues that the American Public is concerned about. At this point in the campaign, I am convinced they are not even fully AWARE of what issues are important to the American public? Give it up!

Ohio Coal Association Says Obama Remarks Make It Clear: Obama Ticket Not Supportive of Coal

To: STATE EDITORS

Contact: Mike Carey, president, Ohio Coal Association, +1-614-228-6336, (office), +1-614-264-1694, (mobile)

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Nov. 3 /PRNewswire–USNewswire/ — Mike Carey, president of the Ohio Coal Association (OCA), today issued the following statement in response to just-released remarks from Senator Barack Obama about the nation’s coal industry.

“Regardless of the timing or method of the release of these remarks, the message from the Democratic candidate for President could not be clearer: the Obama-Biden ticket spells disaster for America’s coal industry and the tens of thousands of Americans who work in it.

“These undisputed, audio-taped remarks, which include comments from Senator Obama like ‘I haven’t been some coal booster’ and ‘if they want to build [coal plants], they can, but it will bankrupt them’ are extraordinarily misguided.

“It’s evident that this campaign has been pandering in states like Ohio, Virginia, West Virginia, Indiana and Pennsylvania to attempt to generate votes from coal supporters, while keeping his true agenda hidden from the state’s voters.

“Senator Obama has revealed himself to be nothing more than a short- sighted, inexperienced politician willing to say anything to get a vote. But today, the nation’s coal industry and those who support it have a better understanding of his true mission, to ‘bankrupt’ our industry, put tens of thousands out of work and cause unprecedented increases in electricity prices.

“In addition to providing an affordable, reliable source of low-cost electricity, domestic coal holds the key to our nation’s long-term energy security - a goal that cannot be overlooked during this time of international instability and economic uncertainty.

“Few policy areas are more important to our economic future than energy issues. As voters head to the polls tomorrow, it is essential they remember that access to reliable, affordable, domestic energy supplies is essential to economic growth and stability.”

The Ohio Coal Association (OCA) is a non-profit trade association representing the interests of Ohio’s underground and surface coal mining producers. The OCA represents nearly 40 coal producing companies and more than 50 Associate Members, which include suppliers and consultants to the mining industry, coal sales agents and brokers and allied industries. The Ohio Coal Association is committed to advancing the development and utilization of Ohio coal as an abundant, economic and environmentally sound energy source.

This is a typical example of McCain’s campaign — unethical! Find a snippet that is false but inflames people; maybe you can win enough undecided to change opinion. Lying is just wrong, and McCain keeps showing this bad side of his character. If he gets in, would we go to war on his distortions, lack of fact checking, and/or lies? (Oh, right, we already did that!).

Comment by Matt - Pittsburgh

Typical of at least this Republican campaign. Believe in /Do the same thing as your oppponent and then slander them for it hoping the smear sticks to the wall and forcing the candidate to defend themselves thereby putting doubt in the voter’s minds. This is why we need news outlets to make their own analysis and not allow politicians to just say/do whatever they want without at least questioning their decisions.

Dirty fight? They are commenting on things that came straight from the mouth of Barack Obama. Liberal Bias once again. You never hear the Obama/Biden attacks. There have been plenty too. Do you have a gut feeling of who you should vote for in this election? Obama tells you what you want to hear, but when he doesn’t think cameras are around or that something won’t come back to bite him, THEN he really tells what he is thinking. Something doesn’t smell right here. I hope you see it too before it’s to late.

My faith in Fox’s reporting is somewhat restored with this article. Earlier Fox articles and headlines distorted the truth and left me with a nasty aftertaste and uneasy stomach. With the internet and other forms of sources to obtain information readily, I find it insulting to think the media thinks us too ignorant or lazy to check out news items for ourselves…but then again people having to double check what is reported is a sad commentary about our media.

Comment by Justin

This is yet another example of a last minute desperate attempt to cause a shift in the minds of Americans.
America has decided, and their votes will speak louder than any rumor or attacks on Barack.

I would say to all those Republicans, trailing in the polls, and obviously about to lose this race… YOU HAD YOUR CHANCE FOR THE PAST 8 YEARS…. and you can thank BUSH for the shift in power tomorrow for it.

Welcome home, President Obama.

Comment by Ronald Hulett

It seems to me that the media is bound and determined to have Obama elected. I have not heard anyone ask the question, what will happen to the many thousands of jobs that we will likely loose if he and his congress majority increase the taxes on major businesses. Which will be forced to move offshore. I don’t understand why anyone of his supporters aren’t thinking of the negative that his tax increase will cause. I think Obama will cause a total collapse of the economy.

This is sad. The Republians are grasping at straws. That is NOT what Obama said at all. I heard the clip this morning. How they twist and turn things makes me ill. McCain and Palin have lied about not using Rev Wright agaist Obama as well. Today, the issue appeared in PA the only state this morning that was discussing it, via instructions frome the DNC. If McCain cannot control his own people, how does he think he can control a nation? At his age, he will probably have a stroke. Then look out. I am ashamed of the Republicans and the campaign they have pursued. It has done them no good. It makes them appear small, and pathetic. They are not honest, they are liars when things do not go their way. Very sad.

Has anyone ever noticed that Obama never actually means what he says? Every tape that comes out about him, the Obama camp response is that he did not mean it that way. How can he say that someone can build a coal plant if they want to but it will bankrupt them because of the huge sums of charges that will be charged against the company due to emmissions AND then turn around and say that they did not mean it that way? How else could he have meant it? It is really not any clearer……

Comment by Colleen

This is nothing new,in fact ,it is months old.
Once again McCain/Palin is deliberately twisting the facts to prop up a failed campaign. The Republicans want business as usual–keep pumping out massive amounts of pollution and hang the consequences for the US and the rest of the world. The USA already is a major cause of global warming.Obama said if you continue down that road, then you will need to pay for your polluting practices.
” Dirty” coal has had a free ride for FAR too long.It cannot be allowed to continue making profits by refusing responsibility for its own mess.THE CLIMATE DOESN’T CARE ABOUT FINANCIAL MELTDOWNS. USA has been using way more than its fair share and polluting way more than its fair share for a long time now. Obama is saying it has to stop. Its time to take responsibility for your own mess !! What is wrong with that? It used to be McCain’s position too, until he threw away his honour and his legacy.
Its just more of the same low tactics, and thank goodness Obama hasn’t lowered himself to McCain’s level. Palin says “it doesn’t matter” what causes global warming.Somebody please tell me how you fix something you cannot understand!!

there’s the typical obama-speak. as an ideological matter he will not outrightly say he is against coal or nuclear plants. his strategy is to make those technology extremely costly that it will simply not be feasible— and by imposing severe caps he will raise money to fund alternative energy. again it’s the same old tranfer of wealth from one who produces it to another that strkes obama’s fancy. i’m sorry guys..obama supporters don’t impress me much. he is a weasel who wangle with words. he hasn’t been some coal booster. that should be plain enough for people in coal producing states who do not care much for verbose b.s. from obama.

What has been happening to America in the last year? We’ve been so blinded by a “need for change” that we don’t care who we elect, just as long as they don’t have an association with the current administration. What we really need the truth about Barack Obama. We no longer have time to lose considering the election is here. We need to worry about Obama’s alarming past and bring up all the truths that haven’t been revealed about him.
One of America’s strongest qualities is our ability to inquire and find out the truth. What happened to those people who used to voice the truth for the greater good, in the spirit of the Muckrakers, those journalists who bring the truth to the surface? In reality we as a nation need to make a responsible, educated decision, and that is being hindered by the media who is putting a lid on this mess.
Moreover, I’ve taken notice that no one is talking about Michelle Obama. They claim to work together on everything, and like many presidents from before, the first lady often acts as a counsel to her husband. If Obama is going to be the leader of the free world, and Michelle Obama will be working hand in hand with him, we should be critically analyzing her as well. I believe they work more as a package deal than John McCain and his wife. I believe that she it she doesn’t belong anywhere near the Whitehouse, her and her husband belong to a group recruiting people to be against America. Why? Because the first genuine statement that she ever made was the one about her not being proud of being American until now (as we all know the fruit of the heart are the words that come out of a person’s mouth). It doesn’t matter the mending statement that she did after that. My dear it doesn’t wipe clean the fact that she is not proud of America nor will she ever be. Wake up people we need the person who fought and stood up for America in addition we need a wife that is sincerely takes pride in America, not the wife that became proud when her husband had a chance to win the biggest prize in public office. This has frankly become another role she can play to help feed her controlling and arrogant personality .

You really should before you believe what Obama says. It isn’t like he hasn’t lied before and wont lie again. McCain is the only one of the three who actually vote for the development of clean coal and it’s use. Niether Biden nor Obama want it. I find it intersting that when John McCain added an amendment to the Energy Policy Act of 2005, it was George Voinivich who accussed John McCain of wanting to bankrupt the coal companies. You can read his comments here (from Cspan)

What is failed to be mentioned is that John McCain’s and Barrack Obama’s policy toward coal is the same. To use coal, you have to have ‘clean’ coal.

If Obama said his favorite color was Orange, McCain and Fox would right “See?, his favorite color doesn’t have red, white or blue in it, he’s not american”

This is how pathetic their attacks are becoming.

Everytime they attack foolishness his poll numbers go up. Everytime they attack his real policies the polls tighten.

This has to be the most ignorant campaigns of all time. They would rather attack than try to win an election on the issues and it shows.

No one to blame but themselves and for picking Palen. If he picked Romney we’d have a dead heat with new hamshire being the deciding state. It would have been that close.

Instead Obama wins with over325 votes.

In desperation the McCain-Palin camp is stepping up their negative ads and dirty politics, again totally concentrating on the disgusting scare and smear tactics. They are depending on throwing out a lot of garbage and really just hoping something sticks. Voters’ common sense should prevail and simply render the low-class efforts as recognized and rejected. There are so many clear indications of the true nature of their continuing efforts that they should simply reflect negatively on McCain and Palin, such as: the obvious desperate attempts with previously discredited attacks; attacks of a highly fictionalized nature; their own neglect to address the issues with real specific solutions; their trying to fault Obama-Bidden and then just expecting voters to trust McCain-Palin, as if they have some (unproven) creditability; John McCain’s over use of the pronoun ‘I’, as if it is just all about him; Sarah Palin’s obnoxious and arrogant disregard for honesty; John McCain’s poor judgment, with examples being displayed as the financial crisis unfolded and in his selecting Sarah Palin; Sarah Palin’s displayed lack of any real qualification; their grabbing at faulting George W Bush after strongly supporting him for eight years and even recently declaring that they ‘had the same philosophies’; their copying most everything Obama identifies as being a problem and a needed direction; their changing their positions frequently; their lack of class and quality throughout their campaign, especially after John McCain promised better; their really offering only more of the same covered over with the very empty promise of change; and on and on. It is all there for any objective and rational person to see and then, we really just can’t withstand more of the same!

The quotes were not taken out of context. And in a few months from now you will be the same JERKS that will drive around with bumper stickers saying; “Don’t Blame Me, I Voted For McCain.”
And another thing, you really need to go back to school and learn some more math. 5% of the people do not make enough money to take care of the other 95%. The young adults need to wake up and understand the government won’t be paying a thing so you can go to school. It’s the rest of the 95% that will be paying for it. The last time I looked up Charity it is for freely giving, not mandatory giving.

Three things the Obamedia will do to depress GOP turnout and help Obama October 31, 2008 by PUMA Pundit (Excerpts) The media has just one old used playbook and they have not deviated from it yet. What the media and Obama campaign did to Hillary Clinton before every major primary is what they are doing to McCain/Palin now. Here are their top three tricks to watch out for: (1) Calls for McCain to just give up because the race is over. This is a favorite of the trolls who lurk pro-McCain sites. The ONLY way McCain loses this race is if you let the media trick you and you stay home on election day. (2) Wild claims of Obama winning states that shock and surprise you. WARNING: The Obamedia will tell you all weekend that Obama is winning Ohio, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Florida, Iowa, Virginia, etc…It’s a fakeout! (3) Repeated insistance that blacks and young people will decide this election, and they are all going to vote in record numbers for Obama. Not so…. All of this talk about Obama being ahead is just garbage. They hope you give up and sit home so Obama can win. See the media for what they are — a paid extension of the Obama campaign! Hold your heads up! Vote McCain/Palin!

I must say that I am so thankful that tomorrow is election day!

I have been astounded by the extent to which people have gone to belittle anyone that has a different view or opinion.

There has been nothing between the two candidates that I have been shocked about… if you really think about it, its really just politics as usual.

Unfortunately, having read every news source I can, in order to get a less bias understanding of each candidate, I have seen a disturbing trend…

Under almost any political article are angry and disrespectful comments.

If I were to go by such comments I would have to assume that if you vote for:

Obama - you are a fool who is only inclined to follow whatever the media tells you to do, oh, and you are unamerican, or was that less american…

McCain - you are an ignorant “redneck” who is probably racist…

However, the beauty of America is that we are all allowed to have a different opinion or belief. I hope that we as Americans can come together, not as one uniform voice, but as a diverse group of individuals.

I respect that many have passionate beliefs, but let us not forget that our country is like no other… we blend and weave cultures to create the American Culture.

We all love this country! We all have the best intentions for this country… now lets focus on doing our duty and voting Nov. 4th. Not fighting until the bitter end.

Obama will win, and then he will prove HE is Bush the third, because just like Bush was a puppet of Cheney, Obama the village idiot will be a puppet of Biden.

When people realize that we have the power, collectively, to create the world we want, everything can change for the better. Indeed, we can co-create a world more satisfying than anything we have ever before imagined. Obama/Biden 2008………..A Change you can Believe In :)

United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) International President Cecil E. Roberts issued the following statement today:

“Sen. John McCain and his running mate, Gov. Sarah Palin, have once again demonstrated that they are willing to say anything and do anything to win this election. Their latest twisting of the truth is about coal and some comments Sen. Obama made last January about the future use of coal in America.

“Here is what the McCain campaign left out of Sen. Obama’s actual words: ‘But this notion of no coal, I think, is an illusion. Because the fact of the matter is, is that right now we are getting a lot of our energy from coal. And China is building a coal-powered plant once a week. So what we have to do then is figure out how can we use coal without emitting greenhouse gases and carbon. And how can we sequester that carbon and capture it.’

“Sen. Obama has been consistent with that message not just in the coalfields, but everywhere else he goes as well. Despite what the McCain campaign and some far right-wing blogs would have Americans believe, Sen. Obama has been and remains a tremendous supporter of coal and the future of coal.

“I noted that Sen. McCain even went so far yesterday as to say he has always been a supporter of coal. I wonder, then, how he can justify his statement at a Senate hearing in 2000 that, ‘In a perfect world we would like to transition away from coal entirely,’ and his leading role in sponsoring legislation in 2003 that would have wiped out 78 percent of all coal production in America?

“Fortunately, UMWA members, their families and their friends and neighbors in the coalfields know all too well what is going on here. They’re not going to fall for it, and we urge others throughout America who care about coal to review what the candidates’ records on coal actually are. We are confident that once they do, and once they see the many other benefits to working families of voting for Sen. Obama, they will make the right choice for themselves and their families.
