Palin Camp Seeks to Undo ABC Error

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MISSOURI –-Last night on our flight here, Sarah Palin’s senior adviser Tucker Eskew came to the press section of the Palin plane to condemn an article written on ABCNews.com and to clarify what actually happened in an interview with Palin and ABC’s Elizabeth Vargas.

ABCNews.com reported that Palin espoused aspirations about 2012 in the interview when she did not. Many other news organizations saw that headline and reported the error prompting Eskew to come to clarify the mistake with the entire press corps.

“ABC News made a mistake. They’ve admitted that mistake, but unfortunately, they have compounded that and so have other news organizations.” Eskew said, “In that interview Gov. Palin was asked, right at the very end, about her intentions for 2012. She deflected those intentions and answered the question that she was planning to win. Deflecting isn’t probably the right word. She rejected that contention. She was asked in a follow up question whether she was discouraged–and I’m paraphrasing– discouraged by the attacks on her whether she wanted to just go back to Alaska. At which point she said I’m not going to wave the white flag of surrender and I’m not doing this for naught. She had talked extensively in this interview about what her reasons what motivated her in this campaign as a governor, a candidate, a mother and a woman. ABCNews.com proceeded to write a terrifically misleading headline that confused–it’s a much better word that conflated–her answers to those two separate questions.”

The incorrect headline read “Palin has an Eye on 2012,” referring to her saying, “I’m not doing this for naught,” but she was actually answering a question about whether she wanted to return home to Alaska because of the negative press and attacks she has come under–not about her political aspirations. As Eskew explained, when she was asked about her political future she said that she was concentrating on November 4th.

Eskew acknowledged that ABCNews.com “very professionally apologized” for their mistake and updated their story.
He describe the initial reporting of other news outlets on the ABC News mistake as “beyond the pale” and that it was of utmost importance that it get corrected, “As this campaign builds a occasionally acknowledged, but real momentum toward a very fast-approaching deadline of Election Day, that this record get corrected, get corrected very directly, and that some standards of fairness and accuracy be better observed.

He explained that the mistake was made even more ironic because the Vargas interview covered “attack and media distortions” on the GOP Vice-Presidential candidate.

“I would ask you all to reflect a little more deeply on this one, because what it says about our campaigns, our candidates, our politics and our press is, is, is very troubling.” Eskew said. “And it is made all the more troubling when an irony of ironies abounds here. We were sitting down with ABC News for an interview about attacks on Gov. Palin and media distortions.”

He said the criticism that Palin has come under is some of the worst in political history, but that she remains focused on winning five days from now.

“The list of those distortions and attacks on her, that go beyond any witnessed by even I think the most immediate member of the Clinton family, is overwhelming to observers, but not to Sarah Palin.” Eskew said, “You’ll find her knocked around and unbowed, and completely strong in the face of challenges to her parenting, her parentage, the parentage of her newest child, her religion, her personal life, her record that got her an 80 percent approval rating in Alaska. Unbowed, running strong to a finish line that we’re gonna win on, and win at.”

Eskew was asked what Palin’s reaction to the error was and he answered that she wanted to know how it was getting fixed and that “she’s fine” and “doesn’t dwell on it.” He added that she is tough and know how to take criticism.

“I wanna say, the nation’s getting to know this woman, and it’s been 60-some days nearly of that, with its ups and downs. And I hope one thing, and I believe one thing that most people take away from her, is she can take some really hard shots, harder than this one today, and move on.”

As for what the Alaska governor’s plans for 2012, Eskew was clear, “to help John McCain in his reelection.”

This is just the Tank Media of the Left working again. I heard this very story on CNN last evening and even then one of the commentators stated that they should have waited until they got the entire tape to listen to, but Wolf Blitzer just went on with his blatering anyway. Just another example of how they trump up non-news, instead of reporting real news.

Good! No Very Good!

The press is out of control this political season. It should not matter which candidate you are behind, the truth in reporting from the majority of mainstream media outlets has disappeared.

What a shame it will be if this continues. Our children are being taught that it is okay to lie and distort the truth as long as no one calls you on it! No accountability!

We the people are watching and we the people will tune you out and you will be out of a job!

Do your job! Report the truth or get out and find something else to do!

One reason this story got so much attention was that alot of folks that live here in the lower 48 really do hope she goes back to Alaska, but only so the good folks there can boot her out and re-elect someone with intelligence and a pro environmental stance. This time folks, don’t elect someone else that likes to pay a bounty for dead wolf paws, seeks federal assistance to delist polar bears (cause after all they can swim), wants to flood the bays with toxic spew from businesses unregulated environmentally. Alaskan cruises will really take on new vigor to see wildlife simply because they will become extremely rare to spot, if not impossible.

This is seems so unreal, the way the us media is pounding on sarah.

The media made this election for Obama by creating the illusion of him running against John and
Sarah for President - not as sarah the vice president candidate.

They smash Hillary and now sarah - take about womaen suppression.

Comment by Johnny

OMG, Palin as president, you have got to be kidding. This woman is so far in over her head right now. If McCain was really thinking “country first” we would have never heard her name. She is a joke and a bad one at that.

Comment by nell post

I shudder to think of palin in a serious position with our government, although probably not controlling the senate? — it’s bad enough that she was elected in alaska.

Comment by Kiara

I saw a substantial portion of that interview and Sarah Palin was more like any other struggling working moter rather than a vice-presidential candidate. She completely lacks substanc.

Comment by Colonel32

boring stuff here. when sarah palin says anything of substance let me know. go obama.

Comment by fregger

Palin parsing again. Of course she said exactly what she said. If ABC apologised and “updated” the story, this has to do with nonessentials besides Palin’s egotistical aims of engaging in politics on the national level if in fact she and McCAin do lose. Palin’s main problem is that her responses are so airy, it is normally hard to understand just where she is coming from anyway — but in this case, at least, anyone who reads her words verbatim can see just where her aspirtaitons lie in regard to the question she was asked.

Comment by Steve

Typical ABC - Antagonizing Berating Communications did it again. Media open mouth, insert both feet…it’s not like you can walk, talk, and pay attention at the same time anyway. Sarah Palin is most amazing and has tons of intestinal fortitude. She deserves a media silver star for the brutal poundings she takes each day. Hang in there Sarah, PA loves you!

Comment by DLD

It is beyond my comprehension that Sarah Palin/or her campaign keeps subjecting her to this type of news interviews. I watched this interview and although Sarah kept repeating that she has been asked personal questions that the men aren’t asked, Elizabeth Vargas still asked her those same old uninforming questions about her wardrobe and more of the same personal questions. No question what so ever about her stand on the economy, healthcare, etc. I never heard anything during the interview about her plans for 2012 and was wondering how Vargas came up with that. It is truly discouraging when you can’t trust what you hear on the news when that is where we expect to get accurate information. Maybe this type of treatment of Sarah gives support to the actions the Obama campaign has taken to stop giving interviews to that Florida station.

Comment by Dave Major

Palin is a waste of protoplasm.

Comment by ezrydn

The Republicans are saying that this election might be the end of the GOP, as we know it. Well, if the GOP decides Palin is their 2012 candidate, we can kiss the GOP goodbye. Sarah Palin needs to drop back into obscurity where she came from. Maybe Alaska voters like her. It’s assured that voters in the lower 48 DON’T! Talk about a “loose cannon!” Add that to the “cannon without powder” and you’ve got McCAIN-PALIN. Actually, I’m hoping Palin runs in 2012. Obama needs that additional 4 years!

They’ve got the Nixon-curse bad inside their campaign don’t they? Everything they see, saw, and do is tinged with an accusation that “the media” is out to get them. It is a profound paranoiac disorder and a dangerous way to look at communications. If you look back over th past 12 months at the series of blunders and misdirections, not to mention mis-statements and distortions, the McCain/Palin campaign has suffered more from self-inflected wounds than anything the media could serve up to them.

Comment by texasvoter

Those of you that don’t like Sarah Palin have completely lost the point of this entire article. They misrepresented what she said and you are still harping on that misrepresentation as if that is what she said. I am getting the impression that none of you actually read these articles.

Comment by Hilary Smith

Palin is a polarizing figure. She’d never get 50%.

It’s such a shame the news papers, radio, and TV media have to be so one sided and blatantly misleading. It would be such an historical moment in our history if the above could only report according to the news and not try to lead the american public down the proverbial path of their ideological beliefs. I can only trust in the american public to weigh the facts in this election and realise their are only two people in this race who are transparent and care about this country. Maybe they make mistakes but who doesn’t, I can’t believe THE ONE can do all the things he promises after all ____he’s not GOD.( he only thinks he is)I’m sure it has been a big boost to his ego to see the rally turnouts but I believe it possibly is curiosity more than support. I’ve always been leary of smooth talkers with big promises and shady associates, acorns don’t fall far from the tree. I’m not buying the used car speech and foreign policy’s of socialism . Anybody surprised by this? The media has every right to be biased. What they don’t have the right to be, is promoting themselves as objective , fair, and unbiased. This is the real danger– that people might start thinking of them this way.

Comment by megan

Now there’s a Palin CAMP? (You don’t hear Biden talking about the Biden CAMP…because he’s part of the Obama CAMP). Palin and McCain are clearly running separate campaigns with their own agendas. That’s why they are loosing…and because Obama is just better.

Speak for yourself OMichael. Do you really think you can speak for all the women of this nation? That’s just ridiculous. I for one admire Palin’s courage and strength. The media and Obama’s people have thrown anything and everything they can at her and she takes it all. She is someone to admire, not make fun of. Of course Obama supporters love to use her to deflect from Obama’s radical associations. America isn’t buying it. They are coming to their senses. Watch out Obama!! Your arrogance is showing, and ridiculous INFOMERCIAL is a joke.

I read on a blog yesterday, from a supposedly employee of the DNC/Obama Campaign that they are paying people to ‘police’ internet news stories and flood these comment sections with negative opinions about McCain/Palin in an orchestrated effort to discourage voters?

Anybody know about this?

She is the most insipid and brain dead VP candidate in the history of politics, so any criticism is justly deserved. In fact, it is beyond incredulity that her intellectual shortfall isn’t called to task more.

Palin is EXTREMELY ambitious and has ABSOLUTELY NO intelligence.

This is a VERY bad combination.

This woman has absolutely idea to run her own family much less the country.

“What a man believes upon grossly insufficient evidence is an index into his desires — desires of which he himself is often unconscious. If a man is offered a fact which goes against his instincts, he will scrutinize it closely, and unless the evidence is overwhelming, he will refuse to believe it. If, on the other hand, he is offered something which affords a reason for acting in accordance to his instincts, he will accept it even on the slightest evidence. The origin of myths is explained in this way.”
- Bertrand Russell

This in essence, explains why many of you speak of liberal media bias. When, in fact, you oppose it simply because it goes against your instincts. In this case, your instincts also constitute a form of brainwashing and control through fear.

Comment by TruAmerican

OBAMA is they SAVIOUR.

The sooner you Right Wing Nuts accept it the better :-D

Comment by Steven

The right to freedom of the press was always dependent on the reporting of the facts, even when it was leaning a particular direction–but the distortions on Palin AND McCain are nothing less than a powerful corporate industry, known as the media, trying to impose their will on the people. The founding fathers never forecast that the power of the media would become so intense, that they could sway the country’s choice in a presidential election. 600 MILLION DOLLARS (by an Obama broken promise) AND ALMOST 100% PRISTINE MEDIA COVERAGE vs. FEDERAL MATCHING FUNDS AND ALMOST 100% NEGATIVE COVERAGE. And yet…McCain might still be able to win. hmmm…..maybe if the news media was honest in its reporting and the opposing candidate would actually do what he says he will we’d see McCain with a rather large lead right about now……oh yeah…the media doesnt want that.

I am beyond concerned for my country right now. It’s not just Obama who brings me much concern, but those who control the information we receive.

“The price of liberty is eternal vigilance.” Thomas Jefferson

Comment by Harr

It appears our nation will be divided after the election like never before, no matter who wins.
It is the news media that has caused this for the most part churning up the flames between the liberals and conservatives to a level never seen before. It does seem the liberal press however is the real culprit they have turned me from a life long democrat to a republican.

We are glad to hear that Governor Palin is seeking to correct errors written about her. However, her camp should also include a story written today about the GOP seeking to blame her if Governor McCain should loose the election. That’s right! The article said they (including McCain) will blame Sarah if John McCain looses. I don’t know how they intend to do that? I believe Sarah has only improved McCain’s chances of winning. He is lucky to have her.

Sincerely, Dave

Back in my early 20’s I aspired to be a photo/journalist. Back then I was taught that to be come successful you report the ‘news’ without bias and you you report it accurately. Things sure have changed over the years. Regardless of who the press/media is dumping on you can believe that there is almost total bias and very little accuracy. Makes me glad I chose a different profession.

After hearing McCain and Obama speak, after watching Palin and Bidden and after noting the RNC and DNC positions it is hard to understand anyone having any doubt as to what the right choice is. Unless someone was active in the Republican Party or extremely wealthy, and even then, it is hard to imagine anyone being able to rationally justify voting for McCain-Palin. Their arguments are empty as they only offer unfounded and exaggerated scare and smear tactics that are easily debunked with the truth, while on the issues they just state generalities, heavily embedded with the I pronoun, without any specifics or substance or even any real hope. In contrast, Obama clearly states his positions with detail and defines his objectives as being to benefit the middle class, which then ends up benefiting everyone, while he concentrates on we, us and you. The difference is obvious as being a McCain-Palin rationalized ‘more of the same’ focus on benefit for Special Interests and a select few, arrogantly and deceptively pursued or with Obama-Bidden in finally turning things around and really focusing on straightening out the economy, ending the war in Iraq, putting al Qaeda out of business and addressing our many and drastic domestic problems and needs, to the benefit of everyone. McCain and Palin are stuck having to patronize their major supporters and then they just can’t do anything for the majority of Americans, can’t do anything but ‘more of the same’.

Comment by Lynn

Is it really news when the liberal media makes up stories about conservatives? Sadly, no.

Sarah Palin has been attacked more than any politician - and she STILL has a 50% approval rating. Once the heat of the campaign is over, and the press calms down - Americans will come to appreciate the MOST POPULAR GOVERNOR IN AMERICA (you don’t get that title for nothing!) and love her as their new Vice President!

Palin will destroy the Republican party. Let’s get back to real leaders like Reagan, or McCain (before he decided he do anything to win). The Republicans can win if they lead from the center with real ideas. The people who like Palin want leaders to be just like themselves. We need leaders, not just some schmuck just like the rest of us.

Palin is not worthy of an apology. She has thrown more garbage at the public than
any politition that I ever recall. For starters her ‘Country First’ gig is a joke. Her
and her husband have supported the Independant party in Alaska to suceed from the
Union. That sure doesn’t tell me she is all about us Americans. I say she can go back
home. The show is over. If she gets elected V.P. I am moving to Canada. They
at least believe in a good Healthcare system, unlike the McCain / Palin team.

Thank God the America public is too stupid to realize who OBAMA is.

HE IS FRIENDS WITH THE FORMER PLO SPOKESMAN FOR ARAFAT. HE IS FRIEND OF A HOMEGROWN TERROIST. Where do you think he got the 500 Million Campaign Donations? The people of this country do not have that kind of money laying around.

THIS IS HIS PLAN. MARK MY WORDS. He is going to raise taxes on the wealthy. Send this country into a serious depression. Then when the people of the US start losing their heads and start rioting. He will sign an executive order to take control of this democracy and set up MARSHALL LAW INDEFINITELY.

Sound familiar!!!

The harm she has done to the wild life and beauty of Alaska are enough. I don’t hate. I read and study and don’t like her. I read the article, and it’s often hard to say what she is/isn’t saying in her interviews. She is so out of her league that I feel sorry for her. She needs to go home. She needs to retire from politics and be a simple person with her kids and her guns and her soccor.

Just a note to you Obama hacks who’ve been flooding the blog sites with your anti Palin and McCain rhetoric…secrets out. Pretending to be McCain supporters who just can’t take it anymore and now must vote for Obama. You’ve been outed by one from your own ranks and a Hilary supporter. Doesn’t surprise me that you have a complete lack of character, goes with your world view…”the end justifies the means”. Since this is a flawed (and extremely self-serving) premise (Philosophy 101) by simple reasoning all of your beliefs/arguments based on this premise will be flawed and extremely self-serving.

Comment by Simon

I’ve never seen the Media quite like this. Not to this extent or as extensive, this degree of bias. It’s just disgraceful. I’ve noticed in the last 2-3 days that Politico has been running a campaign to try to portray Sarah Palin as selfish & only having an eye on a 2012 run, regardless of any harm done to McCain’s campaign. Now, personally I think any suggestion that Sarah is not totally focused on winning this election is way off the mark! So some of the Media are just “seeing” what they want to see and stretching their interpretations as far as they possibly can.

Palin and McCain are letting the Dems say that the housing crisis is the Repubs fault, and they are not trying to straighten out that huge error. Who cares about such a small infraction? Well, seeing as FOX news has such an integrity issue - let’s go check with Eskew/ABC to see what the real story is. And yes Palin needs to go back to Alaska and do whatever it is she does there.

Comment by EJB

Those of you leaving comments on Sarah Palin not being “substantive,” obviously have only listened or watched CNN, MSNBC, or ABC. You apparently didn’t listen to her when she talked about energy policy or on education and special needs children. She is a bright woman and apparently that disturbs or scares you. You have been too busy checking out her wardrobe or reading her private email to actually take the time to find out about the “real” Sarah Palin. Rather than being led like sheep by Barack Obama; do your own research. I guess my real question is this. Why do you keep talking about her inexperience to be president. Number one, she isn’t running for President; she is the Vice Presidential candidate. Number two, she has more executive experience and common sense than the Democrat Party’s Presidential Candidate.

Comment by Jonnab

I like Sarah!!! She’s fiesty! She’s taken all these liberal jerks have thrown her way without whining but fighting back!

Comment by randy

It seems more and more clear that Sarah Palin has the most integrity of anyone in this campaign. Maybe that’s why the liberal media has trouble saying anything nice about her. She is such a maverick, she doesn’t play the half-truth and stonewall games that others do. If the liberal media admit this, they may actually have to admit there is a reason to vote for her (oh yeah, and McCain because he was smart enough to pick her).

Comment by Ilene Proctor

Obviously, you don’t have to be a brain surgeon to be a president. Witness President Bush. Now, obviously, you don’t have to be a decent, intelligent, constitution-loving, bill-of-rights-abiding , non felon to be a vice presidential candidate. God help us if McBush/Painfull win. The planet isn’t large enough for any of us to escape to. And Mrs Palin ” I wouldn’t blink twice in declaring war on Russia” and Senator Old Cranky Bomb Bomb, the world would be turned into an ash heap, and Palin would have her wish : to see Jesus in her lifetime”<.

When Palin says anything of real substance let me know. I’m sure McCain is regretting this HORRIBLE VP decision. She was selected ONLY to get the votes of Independant and Democratice women. Someone like Romney would have been a good fit for these tough economic times. Looks like Republicans will need to regroup and try again in 2012.

The main stream media should be tried for treason-
It has perpetrated a fraud on the people of the United States - and his name is Obama.

Why aren’t they looking into the fact that Obama’s aunt is living in a slum in South Boston- is a flat designed for disabled- but Obama has managed to “button her up”- and the U.K. press was the media to break this story.
And there it sits.
Then there’s his half-brother that lives in a hut in Kenya on $1 a month.
“Spread the wealth around.”
Be patritic, pay higher taxes.
What con men- and the media has been complicit in this-
and ACORN (Obama’s henchmen) are stuffing the ballot boxes!
Vote McCain-Palin 2008

This Socialist FRAUD MUST BE STOPPED !!!

In my opinion, Sarah is looking towards her bid for the white house in 2012 and is no longer interested in helping McCain win 2008. It is such a shame. Believe me, her going off message is no mistake. She has her on agenda.

Not vetting Sarah Palin was a GOP strategy at some level.

Then when the media writes stories telling the world who this woman really is it becomes very easy to blame the whole thing on the media.

She is a fraud. The socialist governor of America’s most socialize state who suckles feverishly at the tit of government entitlements for her and her family.

Of course she is unbowed; she still doesn’t get that hubris is not the same as ability.

Yes, she is such a victim for being put under the microscope when she is running for the second highest office in the land, yet can’t be trusted to ever go off the GOP leash in front of the press. It’s sexism, I declare! The Liberal media at its most mechanical! Gawd I wonder how McCain sleeps these last and final days. Hasn’t got a friend in the world and his closest travel companions are a straytup whacko and some random, lunatic plumber they plucked off the street as the campaign’s best, last hope.
