How’d They Do That?

SUNRISE, FL - In a word, Obama’s 30 minute buy on national TV was “seamless.” The Democratic nominee’s special - “infomercial” as described by the GOP - concluded with Obama live from his South Florida rally in front of 22,000.

So how did they do it?

As Obama read his speech from a teleprompter, a large countdown clock directly in front of him ticked down the minutes and seconds until he’d be live across America. Located on the press riser where cameras were set up, the clock flashed red in the final seconds. When the clock read :00, his special cut to him live on stage.

America, the time for change is coming - to all of you and all of those who joined us from across the country – in six days – we can choose an economy that rewards work and creates jobs and fuels prosperity starting with the middle class. In six days we can choose to invest in health care for our families, and education for our kids, and renewable energy for our future. In six days we can choose hope over fear and unity over division; the promise of change over the power of the status quo. In six days we can come together as one nation. And one people and once more choose our better history. That is what is at stake – that is what we are fighting for – for the small business owner in Denver to keep his doors open. For the hard working couple in Cincinnati to retire in comfort – for the young student in Fort Lauderdale to afford his tuition.

For men and women in every city and town across this nation to achieve their American dream. And Florida – and America – in this last week, if you will knock on some doors for me, if you will make some calls for me, if you go to barackobama.com and find out where to vote. If you will stand with me, and fight by my side and cast your ballot for me, then I promise you we will win not just Florida, we will win this election and together we will change this country and change the world. Thank you, and God bless you, and may God bless the United States of America.

When he began reading the remarks from the prompter, the countdown clock turned green and began counting down again - to the moment when the live portion was over. Obama nailed it.

That’s what a few million can get you.

Don’t fool yourself John McCain would have done the same thing if he had the money….

Comment by NobodySpecial

There is no reason why McCain/Palin couldn’t have done this too. The problem with their team is that when they spend too much time in front of the camera they get themselves into trouble. The other day they were on CNBC and demanded that only 5 minutes of their interview to be shown live. The CNBC staff couldnt understand why but speculated if they were together live too long something would go wrong and make them look bad. Today Sarah was at a solar power startup company but she was talking about her “Drill, Baby,Drill” nonsense, another gaff on her part and it didnt go over well with the workers at the solar power company.

He didnt explain that income of $200k - $250k would not change in taxes.

Sure beats getting robo-calls! Can’t McCain do that? Last I heard was he had $37M remaining. Seems like $3.5M wouldn’t be that big of stretch. That way, we wouldn’t have call center folks walking off the job so they don’t have to deliver the constant string of BS he’s already paying for.

It looked amazing…How many people sending in their hard earned dollars equals millions? That must be alot of Americans.

Yaaaawn ! What a phoney. A desparate man would pay that much money for SO many not turning their TV’s on or at Church to pray against the man. He’s a loser in all ways. If he wins, it’s only because the media has been in bed with him. Again…..Yaaaaawn.

McCain has been outworked. McCain has been out-thought. McCain has been extremely outclassed. McCain has lost all three debates. He showed us poor judgement by choosing a candidate who is far from ready for her post. McCain has been outraised in the $$ dept.. He has gone against his dirty campaign loathing. He has resorted to Swift Boating again. But alas, Obama’s win will be the statistical equivalent of McCain going thru a log chipper. It ain’t gonna be pretty folks.

Infomercial ! ??

But the underlying purpose of this is for Obama to say thank you to these networks for their favorable coverage of him. $1 million per TV station.. This is one of those wink, wink kind of move.

Playing this game is Same Old politics. Payback your cronies.

Big problem for Obama is on the horizon. He owes a lot to a lot of people. These poeple will run his presidency if he wins.

The Republican party wishes they could afford it and had thought of it with time left to matter.

McCain is now doing his version on stone tablets and will carry them down a mountain on November 4th. Sarah Palin will most likely trip him in an effort to get her own shot in 2012.

I’m just wondering how they’re going to pay for this? Actually, I don’t wonder. I know! We’ll pick up the tab.

I do, however, wonder how he’ll rebuild our military after cutting the existing budget by 25%. I’m not great at math, but he must have flunked it!

Obama used a phrase that caught my attention: he said something to the affect, My faith in the American People has been vindicated. I think he meant to say. My faith in you, American People, has been so low and by you showing me support by giving me $600 Million, covered my back through your support/media, not questioned my past and present associations in detail, and prevented access to my records, came to see me in the thousands and thousands, yes, this has vindicated me on those associations such as Wright, Ayres and others that didn’t think you would be so supportive of me, so easily, and so willing, my challenge was to look at all your weaknesses, all your needs, all your dreams and to use this as the base to my campaign and lead you to my path. I have even shown my wrath, not to an obvious degree but just a taste waiting for those who oppose me and you my followers–yes! My faith in the American People has been vindicated.

I’m sorry but I may be wrong but what if this is right on? Obama needs time to show the true American People that the path he takes is dishonest, deceptive, and untrusting. Obama is not ready for the Presidency of the greatest Country ever, The United States of America. We are united in so many ways and this is one way we will not take. Obama needs a few more years to prove himself by deeds and not by words.

Yo estoy esperando que los Latino-Americanos esten unidos en este tiempo emportante–Vamos a votar por McCain y Palin. No necesitamos Welfare, necesitamos Oportunidar en este Estados Unidos!! We need to be meek as a dove but wise as a serpent on these issues.

as barack obama and his contributors have found out, lots of money can buy you the big expensive media time and put lots of people on the ground all over the us and probably will win this election.

however, in terms of substance, obama’s big advertising and funding and other advantages have really provided zero useful information to any serious voter and obama and his campaign just had to have planned that way.

especially in our current political system( until the amounts that can be spent become mandatory in all elections), any politician, republican or democrat, with enough money to spend, can fool enough of the people to win any election.

if obama does win, we certainly wish him well and hope and pray that he finds some real meaningful substance to fill in the voids and empty platitudes which he and his campaign have provided to the public.

however, with our economy being the way it is, raising and spending these huge amounts of money on any political campaign when both candidates had the option to take the fixed amounts( both promised to do so, but only mccain kept the promise) provided by law does not speak well of obama’s character and simply cannot be allowed to occur ever again.

Subliminal messages you see him all over the tv being called president, so naturally your brain will want that to, because the idea has been planted in your head. SO AS YOU SEE THE TENTH MILLIONTH ad on tv, ask yourself why? Why does he need to inundate you with commercials. He can keep his infomercial along with his empty rhetoric. The man does not match the rhetoric - it’s absolutely amazing what people in this country fall for. No wonder the rest of the world is laughing at us. Do you not stop to wonder why other countries including most of our enemies want this empty suit to be our President? It’s no accident. There have been other men in history who have generated this type of hype and response - and it took wars to correct it. Let’s not make the same mistake on American soil.

Look at what he says and what he has done - the two don’t jive. Is it utter disbelief? or utter stupidity that makes people think he will deliver on anything he’s promised (other than the unprepared redistribution comment) - that alone should tell you that you only hear the truth when the teleprompter is turned off.

Obama is so brilliant.. Question to all you republicans.. Why do you guys like negative campaigning so much, not just in this election but generally you guys are considered the dirtiest of politicians.. I mean whats with all the hate mongering dating back to the 60s. This new Dole ad that calls Kay Hagen “Godless” I mean you guys claim you are christians but as the bible says “By the fruits you shall know them” Obama is more Christ like, Christ says do unto others and he did NOT start the negative campaign. I mean are you republicans just hateful by nature, you guys have always been so consumed by hate and negativity, whats the deal?

i’m truly afraid if Obama gets elected. I am a nurse, i work for a Dr who is from Canada. Their health care is terrible. I know almost word for word both candidates views. I NEED to know more about Obama’s past. the voting public NEEDS to know his relations past and present because IT MATTERS. why arn’t these issues dealt with more DIRECT questions and DEMAND answers, not let Obama and his friends play all around the answers. MAKE THEM answer with a direct answer about all the issues in the present/past of OBAMA!!! WE NEED TO BE INFORMED. it’s ridiculous to think that the LA Times is not releasing this video. If this film gives information regarding the future of this country, it’s unpatriotic to hold onto it!!!

I watched the first half of the Obama spot (then I had to give my 1yr old a bath :) )
But, from what I saw, it was spot-on. Very well done, very relaxing and calming. Focused on the message and not fear, which is what too many ads (from both ends) have resorted to this campaign.

Did not Obama have more than enough of himself on TV ,plus the media’s bias? Obviously, he is desperately using the money to buy the Presidency , it’s very scary, obnoxious, undemocratic. The more he tries to sell himself , the more I doubt about him.

Comment by iwlclmeverest

M Rydberg, “She’s a fast learner and would do great”….I am sorry but I had to laugh at your comment about Palin. We don’t need Joe six pack in the white house, we need someone who can relate to Joe six pack. Most of you like Sarah Palin because because she aligns herself with the conservative party. What is the big deal? You could pick any conservative off the street and they would have the same viewpoint as Sarah Palin, but they would probably be much smarter. I do not feel comfortable letting someone in The White House who has less education than I do. I graduated in four years (Palin 5 years, some at a community college). That said, I have more educational experience then she does. I understand you guys want to win, but why let a dud into The White House when you have millions of more qualified conservatives?

What can I say…Obama is a master!

A master of saying absolutely nothing and sounding so Reaganesque. LOL …He has to brand himself as a tax cutter and strong on defense in order to fool America.

How do you give a tax cut to 95% of Americans {at the expense of that 5% group} when only 60% pay taxes? Moreover the top 10% pay 70% of the tax burden and the bottom 50% pay 2.8%.

Everytime…everytime it has been tried…tax revenue goes down, so why is this seemingly smart politician saying raise taxes on the rich? It only changes fundamental economic behavior where investors and business owners simply do things differently to avoid taxes.

Look up the laffer curve and then read a little about Karl Marx for those of you MSNBC viewer as well as the uninformed, highly emotional and journalistically suspect Chris Mathews, Rachel Maddox and Keith Oberman. You are loud but say nothing… Keith you are a disgrace to journalism and Rachel you are well…just perky.

The article is right to the point in answering the nagging question on everyone’s minds. And it lets the reader make up their own mind, why use explanations or analysis when terse innuendo does the job better?

In a word, you never fail to provide “unbiased” reporting. Who needs a few million? Your “Real Journalism” is priceless.

How did he do it? The same way he is running his campaign with good organisation unlike his opponent. Hard work and organisation will win the day. Thats what America needs.

A country divided will not stand people. When Obama won the DNP nomination i waited to see who Mc Cain would pick as a running mate before I cast my weight behind a candidate. Palin decided for me as a responsible American it helped me grasp Mc Cain first big choice of his campaign, and as a proud American one who in-listed to serve his country and go off to war (during my wife’s first pregnancy). I felt I had to go, that it was my patriotic duty to go so off I went. To get to my point seeing that “Commercial” like some people are calling it made me understand why I went.

I want what’s best for my country. The country I fought for, the country I love.

And still the bashing by the Repubicurmudgeons persists…

Say what you will but —even with another three hundred million dollars and another year to practice— John McCain could not have given such an eloquent, substantial, and self-assured presentation. Period. So you can all stop saying that Barack’s cash advantage is responsible for what we saw on TV tonight. (My point will be illustrated when, in fours years, Sarah Palin —in her inevitable run at the White House as an INDEPENDENT— *still* is unable to name three newsmagazines.)

Five days…

M Rydberg, you’re not well informed by your Canadian Dr. Friend. I spend 6 months a year down in Vero Beach and the rest up in Toronto. I’ve found the health care south to be atrocious. The type of care that gets delivered down there is “CARE TO PAY WITH VISA, MASTERCARD, AMERICAN EXPRESS, CASH OR CHECK?”

I’m retired and I’ve had a few problems down there. I hurt a muscle golfing and was told I had to have an MRI, I paid, I was told I had a badly torn bicep, bandaged up and sent home with meds. My follow up meeting I was told maybe I should have a second MRI as there may have been additional problems (this was two weeks later when I was pretty much fully mobile again) and I said “I feel fine” but relented. I was told it looked ok but to come back yet again in a few weeks, which I did and was yet again encouraged to have another MRI done to “make sure things are healing properly”. I told them to stiff it!

I took my MRI results home when we came back to Toronto. I golf with an orthopedic surgeon and mentioned my encounter down south, he laughed and said “that’s not uncommon, how much did you shell out”? I told him and laughed and said “chalk it up to experience”. A few weeks later he and his wife were over for dinner and he asked if he could see the MRI results, I showed them to him and he said “there was no TEAR in your muscle”! He asked if I had paperwork indicating that the doctor called it a TEAR, and I showed him. He said “When you go down there this fall, take the MRI’s with you, I’ll write a little note and they either refund you the money on your second MRI or you sue for malpractice, see what he does”. I did, exactly that, dropped in told him to contact my doctor at home, and a few days later was told to expect a credit on my Mastercard.

The whole experience left me feeling like I had bought a defective VCR at Sears. Thanks but no thanks, I’ll stick with my health care up here and don’t be so quick to criticize something YOU haven’t experienced.

Wait I’m confused. You think this was subliminal…and what did Bush do for his first election. Oh yeah, scared the heck out of us by telling us that Iraq had W.O.M.D.

For any doubters that believe he/she can benefit more from the McCain “Tax” plan, think again. Its very intising, since it increases your exemptions (dependents). But it does not decrease you tax rate. On the other hand, high earners (this would include large corporations) would not get exemptions- because there is no such thing- but would decrease their tax rate. If you compare them both, the amount of increase for exemption (dependent) is no where near the reduction in tax for high earners. In fact, this increase in income is congruent with Bush’s economic stimulus package. Sure you had additional income in the month you recieved it, but where is that money now? Unless you earn over $250,000, I don’t see how any person can think they would benefit more under the McCain tax plan.

In case you question this comment, which I’m sure some will, talk to a CPA and get thier feedback.

P.S. I voted for Bush on his first term, and I am voting for Obama this election.

Priceless!

Well stated truthful and heartfelt plans for the positive future of America. Obama/Biden is the only sane and intelligent choice. McCain/Palin is just more of the same old hateful, lying, negative, devicive politics of Bush/Cheney/Rove. More costly wars, more trillions of national debt, no health insurance, no clean energy policy, NO new jobs–McCain is just like Bush, he wants to play war, he wants to play Commander-in-Chief, he is an angry erratic man who can almost taste the revenge for his being tortured. He could care less about the middleclass. And Palin, she’s the snide, smirking, lying mirror image of stupid Bush in a skirt.

Question: Why do Republicans who don’t make over 250,000. per year keep voting against their own best interests? The 700,000. tax cut that McCain proposes for each CEO and billionaire is just not going to trickle down to you, you do know that don’t you?

Eight years ago I would have voted for “Straight Talk” McCain but the RNC decided he didn’t represent the real, pro-america folks. Now that he has morphed into a patsy and mouthpiece for the party he’s just lost all credibility. I’m still puzzled how the “Family Values” flag wavers can support an adulterer though.

It’s ironic that folks here are complaining that Obama is buying the election when the same could be said about George W. Bush in the last two elections or Bloomberg in NYC mayoral race. I think what really irks the Fox News/Infotainment crowd is that for perhaps the first time the Republicans have been beaten at a game they perfected. Up until now the RNC has been by far the best party at communicating with and rallying it’s base. This is how they’ve won close elections pure and simple and the Democrats knew it but have proven helpless to improve their own organizational effectiveness.

The Obama campaign (not the DNC) has simply done a brilliant job of get organizing it’s base, extracting small(ish) donations and then mobilizing it. They’ve somehow managed to get Joe Middle-Class involved and voting with his wallet perhaps for the first time; myself included. It seems that from the beginning of the primaries Obama understood how to build an enthusiastic, admission paying, army of educated liberals & moderates…. something that his own party has been unable to do by themselves.

The problem with this guy is that he is UN-TRUTHFUL. It’s so easy for him to look straight at the camera, and lie to the american people, that it really scares me. We all know Bush never had a fair shake at this. I’ve seen people blame him for anything and everything ever since he was elected. Nobody’s perfect OK. If you disagree with him (as i have in some areas) that’s your right. But he’s our president. ALL OF US. We’re all Americans. I beg you to take a second look at Obama before u vote for him. Don’t just let him ride the wave into the most difficult and important job in the world. We have seen the results of this way of thinking before, and it was a disaster. Please people

I’m a great learner too, can I be somebody’s VP candidate?

p.s. I’m so pro-American that I’ll pack my bags and leave this country if McCain doesn’t win. That’ll teach ‘em. Now where’s my six pack?

I watched every moment of it. It was a beautiful thing. Although I have already voted for Mr. Obama, If I were an undecided that would have helped seal my vote for Mr. Obama. There was no talk of fighting, no hateful message, no low blows at the other ticket. Very well articulated, and the best put together ad that I have seen in a very long time. By the way..who cares if he is reading from a teleprompter..big deal. Job well done!!

plain and simple. obama can not buy his votes from the americans. he can not insult our intelligence by spending loads of money. i would rather suggest him to distribute the $600 million to every american. that will solve our problem.

Do you really need to ask the question?? And I much rather have a president who has shown that they beat the odds during the current state of America’s economy. He obviously has the know how when it comes to generating $$$ and putting it to good use. McCain on the other hand (nothing personal) has only shown that he is reactive and not proactive. His protest that Obama didn’t keep his promise to meet with McCain about accepting public $$$ to fund his compaign is very elementary in a Presidential race. If McCain would make decisions based on what is best for his compaign and not play pitty-pat or he said - she said about what someone else is doing, he would have been a lot further along than he is now. However he has not and he has only McCain to blame. And frankly its just too late.
