Palin Keeps Mentioning Wardrobe Controversy

AP-Photo

AP-Photo

TAMPA, Florida–The Palin campaign is successfully keeping the 150, 000 dollar wardrobe controversy in the news today. It began with “The View’s,” Elisabeth Hasselbeck who introduced Sarah Palin and went after the media for coverage of the RNC’s purchase of pricey clothes for the GOP Vice-Presidential nominee calling it “deliberately sexist.”

When Palin spoke next she continued the theme, “It is so nice to be back here in the Sunshine State and quite warm which I love and grabbed a jacket this morning to put on not realizing how warm it would be. My own jacket.”

She said this yesterday, but expanded saying the wardrobe she wears is now her own, but what she wore at the RNC is much like the convention set.

“Those clothes they are not my property just like the lighting and the staging and everything else that the RNC purchased I am not taking them with me I am back to wearing my own clothes from my favorite consignment shop in Anchorage, Alaska.”

Palin advisors told Fox News two days ago that different sizes and styles were bought for Palin to try on and possibly wear and that everything that “could be returned was (returned).” Clothes that were not worn or tailored for Palin were returned to the stores after the RNC.

However, this is the first time that Palin has said this—it is not clear why the campaign did not immediately explain that Palin was not keeping the clothes when the story broke and hurt the Alaska governor’s “Hockey Mom” image.

Palin then began to itemize the accessories she was wearing stressing her frugality, also something that Hasselbeck mentioned to the cheering crowd.

“I am glad though that she brought up accessories also let me tell you a little bit about a couple of accessories didn’t think that we would be talking about it, but my earrings–I see a Native Americans for Palin poster. These are beaded earrings from Todd’s mom who is a Yupik Eskimo up in Alaska, Native American, Native Alaskan and my wedding ring it’s in Todd’s pocket cause it hurts sometimes when I shake hands and it gets squished a 35 dollar wedding ring from Hawaii that I bought myself and cause I always thought with my ring it’s not what it’s made of it’s what it represents and 20 years later happy to wear it.”

Palin added that she wears a Blue Star Mom pin to honor her son, Track, who is deployed in Iraq.

WOW! Why would she bring this back up AGAIN and why all of a sudden, after the coverage, is she wearing clothes from her favorite consignment shop in Alaska. Yeah, right. And if the clothes are not hers, she should not have a problem wearing them; after all, they are go to charity - right??

Please someone get real. Do the math. There is no way the RNC, Sarah Palin (including her family) could possibaly spend $150,000. on clothes. Perhaps, someone should do an audit to see what the $150,000. price tag was actually for because she would have had to buy very expensive jewelry and furs etc., to run up that kind of bill.

It’s kind of sad that she has to spend time at a Presidential rally discussing her accessories, I honestly don’t care where she buys her accessories, I want to know how qualified she is to be 2nd in command of this great country and the only way I have to judge that is looking at her educational background; “Governor Sarah Palin graduated from the University of Idaho with a BA in journalism and a minor in political science.
Grade C 28% of U.S. citizens have bachelor’s degrees; therefore she is more formally educated than 72% of the population. Still, it does not appear that she went through an intellectual crucible at this stage of her life either”, next I look at her knowledge of world affairs during interviews which even her own campaign admits were a disaster, she couldn’t even answer what newspapers she reads, and lastly what she talks about in her speeches, she spends alot of time taking in general terms attempting to evoke an emotional reaction of voters which I believe most Americans are smarter that what the McCain/Palin ticket gives us credit for, take a look at her brilliance on scientific research.

I wish the media would fixate on Sarah’s values, morals, strength and character. She represents every strong, christian woman in America that loves her country. She is proud of her country, not calling it “mean” or stating that she wasn’t proud to ever be an American. Michelle Obama gets a pass on everything. She represents the radical ideals of the past and can’t wait to introduce them to the future, the future my own children face. I am so sick and tired of seeing the continued mocking of a qualified woman who has actually accomplished something in office. What has Barry Obama ever done except promise the poor handouts for life? This is America, the home of the free and the brave. I can’t stand to see it turned into a European nation under socialist laws. A one world view is not good for this country or those who fought for our freedom. I have seen what that system does to an economy and if Americans don’t wise up, they are going to wish they were back in the years of President Bush, not President Carter. Mrs. Palin is just as qualified in foreign affairs as Bill Clinton was when he ran. I’m sick of the sexism. I’m sick of the double standard of the press that has influenced every empty headed person who reads Newsweek magazine and the NY Times, and other ignorant media outlet materials. Cover the issues. Tell about the corrupt Democrats in the Senate and Congress who caused this stinking economic housing disaster, dating back to the stupid ideas of Jimmy Carter. Why don’t you give a brief history lesson for all of those ignorant followers of Obama who can’t think for themselves? History is doomed to be repeated and we are in for a tsunami of misfortune under an Obama presidency.

Why in the world has Palin spend 150k on clothes and cosmetics in the first place . Considering the economy at the Moment this is a slap in the face for the average working female , not a good example , a little less spending would have been sufficiant.

Too bad the handlers of Sarah didn’t borrow a leaf from Obama’s idea of “spreading the wealth around”. I saw McCant on TV last week and for several days he seemed to have on the same blue gingham shirt (probably cost no more than $30 bucks at Walmart or Ross Stores). Surely, if the RNC has some budget in its camp for clothing, they could have also invested a little in the top end of the ticket.

Comment by Pete

First of, let me say I strongly support Obama. But I think the McCain campaign has seriously mis-treated this woman. I think it was sexist in the first place to have raised this issue. If McCain had gotten new clothes for the campaign (with the campaign money), nobody would have raised an eyebrow, but because it’s a woman involved, her clothes and shoes and what not has to be highlighted.

It is strange that after the story spilled onto the MSM, not one of those campaign staff showed up to counter the stories or at least offer some kind of cover for her. It would seem they’ve left her to defend herself and they just sit back and watch her dis-integrate. How does that actually help the campaign?

This has got to be worst-run campaign I have ever witnessed in my life. Obviously I’m not that old, but still this one will take some beating.

John McCain has shown his true colors. He can not even manage a campaign and he wants americans to believe he can run the United States of America, with a VP who seems more interested in her ambitions than helping McCain get elected.

Ha.

Why doesn’t the MSM look into Obama’s trip to Kenya- to meddle in his cousin’s (failed) presidential election- paid for at the taxpayers’ expense?
And the $$$ Obama gave to Odinga.
And the advice he gave.

Then in Iraq- he tried to “influence” American troop withdrawal- until “after the election,”- so that if he should win, he could take the credit.

Two very clear violations of The Logan Act- and nobody says a word.

And I realize Sarah Palin “brought up” the clothes- but that’s just her way of having her say, explaining what happened and have a giggle at the media’s expense.
She realizes and appreciates the broader, more important issues” the war, the economy, the American people and our troops.

She stays focused and good natured while the left wing media gets their panties in a bunch- over a “bunch of panties!”

It’s so interesting that the McCain campaign keeps saying they’re going to donate the clothes. To whom? No one donates “gently used” top-notch designer clothes to Goodwill; in fact, they’d do more good selling them on eBay and then donating the cash. And likening the clothes to rented lighting? Excuse me, but rented lighting and staging and such are one thing, but once clothes are worn, they a) can’t be returned and b) if they are returned, the value decreases dramatically. Just another failed attempt by Palin to explain it all away.

Comment by ts

Good for Gov. Palin. She did not buy the clothes and so what if she did. compared to what the Obama campaign spends it is chump change. She is great and that is why Obama camp can’t stand her.

150 k on clothes hmmm, sounds like pork barrel spending to me. Oh I forgot there donating the clothes. Ok lets take a look at that, who cares that your donating it to charity, like thats going to feed the hungry, Better off selling the items on Ebay probably will make more money anyway and then donate the proceeds. Palin could probably get a cool mil for her thongs.

Comment by Scott Keller

It’s so interesting how so many of the anti-Palin not-for-anything group ignores facts and jumps on hearsay and half-stories to make their points. The entire article is about how most of the $150k list of purchases were returned already and that Palin herself was not involved in the choice of clothes or the choice of stores. The article also states that she is BACK to wearing what she would normally wear from the stores she would normally buy from. It just proves that people will cling to their beliefs even when proven over and over that they’re completely wrong and will reach for the wildest straws to try to “prove” that they’re “right”.

Comment by dynahog

As well she should. I heard it most of last week.

Now is it surprising on Washington Week that host Gwen Ifill raised the $150,000 shopping for Sarah Palin, but did not mention nor did any of the panel mention the news that had been out all week on the subject.

1) 1/3rd was returned immediately because it didn’t fit
2) 1/3rd has not been unwrapped and is in storage in the cargo bay of the airplane she’s using for the campaign
3) She did get to use about 1/3rd of this ’shopping’, but never accepted it as hers.

The plan from the get go was to give it away to charity, or any of the articles that can’t be returned.

There also was mention that much came of the Sales racks at these prestigious stores.

Sarah has also given a boost to shops around Alaska where she gets things. A bonus for the thrifty and frugal shoppers up there in the Largest State of the Union.

I wish someone would buy my clothes and wash them for me at their expense and I’ll make a promise that when I’m finished with them I will donate them to charity. Funny how this story never made the front page of Google. Anyone ever look into how much has been spent on Obama’s makeup or clothes, or Hillary’s for that matter? How about John Kerry’s and John Edward’s $400 haircuts. Interesting how the MSM only points out how much was spent on Sarah, not anyone else.

Comment by mik

If the McCain campaign had chosen a running mate that was qualified to be President the clothes situation would not be a problem at this point. There are several more qualified female Republicans that McCain should have chosen, ie Elizabeth Dole, Christine Whitman etc etc, none of which would have required new clothes. Not to mention all would have been well versed in Civics, Foreign Affairs and comfortable in one on one interviews.
I gave up on McCain when he chose Palin as a running mate, it was a very poor judgement call as well as very short sighted. That is when I began to question his judgement. His campaign staff should be fired, they have failed him and the Republican Party.

Comment by John

I feel so bad for Mccain. He has been an exceptional public service, and I truly think he has been forced to run a campaign he did not want to run and forced to adopt positions and tones that are not his.

I hate that he had to choose Palin instead of one of his moderate friends that he wanted to pick all along.

Comment by Randy

Hmmmm…. wonder what all the Libs would be saying if Sarah were wearing the same suits over and over again. Possibly - “How can someone vote for a person or party that doesn’t dress the part?”. Sarah continues to bring it up because it is a sorry and stupid attempt by her opponents to find something wrong with her. Clothes!!! come on…. What about Obama’s wife and the almost $500.00 dinner at the Waldorf - why isn’t that an issue???? Find something about her and John that makes me really not want to vote for them. Bush and friends have not been doing well lately - but McCain is not Bush - in fact, he’s opposed Bush on many occasions. Obama will provide change? Huh! Guess that’s why he’s picked Bidden (who - by the way, I have much respect for) for a running mate - a politician who has been in Washington for almost as many years as I’ve been on Earth. Now, correct me if I’m wrong, but does that speak “CHANGE”…. don’t think so.

Either way it goes Rep or Dem - the result will be the will of the country and I respect that. That is what stands this country apart - we have a choice - many people in the world do not. And, after all… if the choice is wrong for the country - we have legal ways to curb the wrong doing. And that my fellow Americans is another thing that has made this country great.

Lets quit all the non-sense squabbles about stuff that means nothing - just ignore the tainted media drama hunters and focus on the issues and vote your heart. Do it smartly the decision will affect the entire country for the next four years. Don’t vote gender, race or party - vote for the best candidate for the country, as you see it.

The McCain campaign should have come out right away and taken responsibility. They all know it had nothing to do with Palin and yet they are letting HER take the heat.

But she turned it to her advantage and all she said was true. She has maintained her marriage for 20 years. Her son is risking his life to defend our country. She honors her grandmother-in-law’s Alaska Native side.

Whether McCain wins or loses, he got my vote because of Sarah.

Interesting quote. Her mother in law, Blanche Kallstrom, is ONE-QUARTER Yupik Indian. One-quarter. Sorry but this does not make her “a Yupik Eskimo.”

Not to be confused with Faye Palin, Todd’s stepmother, who is supporting Obama.

_________________________

Renee, I know you want to believe it is impossible. Perhaps you don’t go shopping for high dollar items to know what could add up easily. Let’s see…those Louis Vuitton handbags for her daughter are one small example. From my female friends, good old LV handbags go for anywhere from $2,500 up to over 10k or more per bag! Add to that $500 to $750 per pair of shoes (if you’re talking Manolo or Jimmy Choo), some Tiffany jewelry (pricey as well), and you can see how it adds up pretty quick. I have watched some women drop these amounts of money in multiples on items like these. Sad but true.

Let’s do some math Renee.

As my female peeps tell me, you gotta have several handbags that match different outfits, as they don’t all go with everything. Let’s use the number 10 for most everything to start and see where it gets us.

10 x $3000 (conservative estimate of LV handbags) = $30,000
10 x $600 (conservative shoe estimate) = $6,000
10 x $1000 (conservative dress/suits) = $10,000
10 x $1000 (Tiffany jewelry sets to match those suits) = $10,000

Just that alone adds up to $56,000.

You can play with the numbers all you want, but I just did some conservative pricing and amounts and came up with 1/3rd the number already.

As bad as it is, there are people out there that spend this stuff. One close friend has 6 LV bags (avg $5k price each), minimum 20 pairs of Jimmy Choo shoes at avg of $600 a piece, and plenty of tiffany bracelets, etc. Hell she even has $8,000 pair of tiffany earrings. She’s not rich either.

While I agree this is a small subject compared to our giant economic and other problems facing this country, I don’t agree with your argument that a) it’s not possible and b) therefore it should be dismissed completely.

Personally, it would have been much more constructive to spend $150,000 building 3 or 4 habitat for humanity style little cottages down in New Orleans for some low income families that still have yet to rebuild.

I think Sarah palin carries a big shovel with her wherever she goes….The old rule we try to teach our kids is to avoid telling lies because once you start, it is a hard cycle to get out of. I think she got used to getting what ever she wants in Alaska by bullying her way around—& has been sobered up by this experience where she has been examined more closely and exposed. Actually, she did most of the exposing herself with that big loud mouth.
Sorry judgment of whoever is responsible to allowing the loose cannon onto the stage in the first place.

Have we all lost perspective on this election? This is about our country and the freedoms it provides. If the Founding Fathers came back today, they would be surprised to see how much of the freedoms for which they fought have diluted by Government—all in the name of entitlements—what’s in it for ME. Over the last 60 years, the slow but continuing influence of the socialistic minded citizenry has made our country look more like Western Europe.

Let’s keep focused on the significance of this election. It is a critical one to win to begin to turn the country around where responsibility and free enterprise are values we teach our children and hold sacred in the conduct of lifes. There are major differences between our choices this election—preserving freedoms in our young country or standing in a chow line expecting others to take care of you. God help us!

Comment by Fred Moolten

Sarah Palin’s $150,000 makeover should not, and would not be an issue
except that John McCain and Sarah Palin have made it one by claiming
to be closer to the lives of average Americans than Barack Obama, who
comes from a low income background and has personal experience with
financial hardship. What offends voters is not the money but the
hypocrisy.

If Senator McCain and Governor Palin want this issue to disappear,
they will refocus their campaign on thoughtful solutions to this
nation’s economic crisis. If they want it to persist, they will
continue to suggest they are just “ordinary folks”. Ordinary
folks have a way of figuring out who’s one of them and who is
pretending.

Neither candidate, in my view, has yet offered an adequately detailed plan for addressing our economic worries, but Obama has provided a few more specifics than McCain, and has assembled an impressive array of economic advisors, including former Fed Chairman Paul Volcker. This seems at least a small step in the right direction, and may explain why several prominent Republicans have recently endorsed him, including Colin Powell, William Weld, and Charles Fried, who was Ronald Reagan’s Solicitor General.

Clothes and cosmetics aren’t really the issue here… The point is that Palin pretends to talk to everyday people, but her wardrobe in six some what weeks exceeds or equals the cost of the homes that many citizens are losing in the current economy… That puts her at about $2,500 a day -not bad for a “hockey mom”. McCain, who likes to cash in on his voluntary military career, has shown that he never rose above the tactical level (though his captivity is worth respect)… he’s too near sited to be the strategic thinker/leader we need in the White House.

Palin is all of a sudden wearing home-spun/department store clothes and accesories… do people really fall for this farce?

Get out and vote Obama!!!

Nobody is saying that Sarah Palin is not frugal (sorry, with her own money). but she definitely is not frugal with the government TAX PAYERS’ MONEY.
Check out her house ” reports claim that the house was actually built by the Spenard Builders Supply that was hired for the $12.5 million Wasilla Sports Complex. Check out the use of the government’s plane that is used for prisoners.Check out the free and uninvited trips of her children and their friends.Check out the price of the clothes. (I cannot see the difference in her looks). Check out all these expenses at the broken backs of taxpayers, and Joe and Jane the Plumbers.
Believe me at least under Obama Joe will have a business of his own, making money. Under McCain /Palin he will have nothing, NADA,Non, to pay tax on. Palin and McCain will have flushed down everything deep into their inconsiderate of the poor pockets. No wonder, they do not want to share the wealth!

Sarah Palin accepted the $150,000 from the Republican Party to purchase a new designer wardrobe. The money , no doubt , came from Republican supporters, maybe some”hockey moms” and Joe, the Plumbers” etc.! But at a time when people are losing homes and jobs, was this not a frivolous act by John Mccain? So Sarah stands up at a rally and shows a $35 wedding ring purchased in Hawaii as well as hand beaded earrings made by her Eskimo mother- in -law. I am sorry but this does not impress me. Our “hockey mom”,s image has definitely been tarnished!

who cares what she’s wearing? obama only wears personally tailored suits, who knows what biden is wearing, and mccain prolly wears special suits and shirts too…lets face it, theyre all wealthy.

but it is wrong to desire such wealth? is that not the american dream, to build yourself up from the bottom?? whatever happened to “rags to riches” you stupid liberals?! now the democratic motto is “rags to better rags for everyone! yay!” …its retarted

poor people have been voting for democrats for 50+ years and guess what?? THEYRE STILL POOR!!!!!

Just like the lighting, just like the staging, just like the clothing…..Sarah Palin is just a stage prop. She said so herself.

Lisa Hohn,
Please enlighten me. You say that Palin represents Christian values, so I believe I can assume you are a Christian, and then you go on to bash Obama for wanting to give to the poor. I’m not sure which bible YOU are reading, but the one I have talks about Jesus helping out the poor. How can you criticize Obama for following Jesus’s teachings, and in the same post, uphold only Palin as a Christian?

I never stop getting afraid of people who think that the economy is tanking because of Obama’s (potential) presidency. It’s much more complicated than this BUT Wall Street is failing due, in large part, to high-risk loans and nutsos like Nationwide, you know happening a several years ago. They’re ultimately failing due to de-regulation - due to McCain’s advocacy for less deregulation. Come on, people, just because Bill O or Sean H says it, doesn’t make it true. Dig deeper….

As for that Palin woman, the day she admitted that she was going to bring her daughters out on the ice at the Flyers’ game so that she didn’t get boo-ed too much told me exactly where her priorities lie. McCain or even her own children are no match for her ambitions.

An admittted Obama supporter, in a tight election, he chose to see his dying grandma and miss two crucial days of campaigning. That’s a guy of the kind of morals I’d be proud to call our leader.

Now we’re blaming the economic crisis on Carter. It’s hard not to laugh. Gosh, you’d think a Republican Congress or Presidency might want to do something about that…. They only had 20 years in power, what a shame.

Lisa Hohn ,you are making the same mistake that Republicans keep making over and over again.Repeat after me;Michelle Obama is not running for President,V.P. or any other public office.By the way neither is Bill Ayers. Not so sure about Joe the Plumber !By the way,did no-one notice that dangerous girl with the “B” on her face had the “B” facing back-to-front? She obviously had done it to herself in the mirror!
