Alaska’s Biggest Paper Backs Obama
ALBUQUERQUE - If it were up to the nation’s newspapers to decide, Barack Obama and Joe Biden would win in a landslide. According to Editor & Publisher - a journal covering the newspaper industry - the Democrats are favored over their GOP rivals by editorial boards 147 - 57 with just nine days until E-Day.
So it was really no surprise when papers like The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The LA Times came out for Obama for president — but the Anchorage Daily News? Governor Sarah Palin lost the endorsement of her hometown paper - Alaska’s biggest newspaper.
The paper recognized the fact that “for the first time ever, an Alaskan is making a serious bid for national office” and all the attention that comes along with it. But - and a huge but - “it does not overwhelm all other judgment.”
The editors argue that John McCain is “the wrong choice” because of his reaction (or lack thereof) to the economic crisis and his embrace of “the extreme Republican orthodoxy he once resisted” in Karl Rove-style politics.
On the other hand, Barack Obama, they argue, brings promise to the office because he “enlists wise counsel and operates with a cool, steady hand” on the economy. As for foreign policy - they say the endorsement of Colin Powell should “reassure” Americans that the junior senator is ready to be commander-in-chief.
And then there’s Palin. The editors recognize her political prowess and call her “a force to be reckoned with,” but argue putting her a heartbeat away from the presidency “is just too risky at this time.”
Gov. Palin has shown the country why she has been so successful in her young political career. Passionate, charismatic and indefatigable, she draws huge crowds and sows excitement in her wake. She has made it clear she’s a force to be reckoned with, and you can be sure politicians and political professionals across the country have taken note. Her future, in Alaska and on the national stage, seems certain to be played out in the limelight.
Yet despite her formidable gifts, few who have worked closely with the governor would argue she is truly ready to assume command of the most important, powerful nation on earth. To step in and juggle the demands of an economic meltdown, two deadly wars and a deteriorating climate crisis would stretch the governor beyond her range. Like picking Sen. McCain for president, putting her one 72-year-old heartbeat from the leadership of the free world is just too risky at this time.
Although the paper serves a typically red state, the Anchorage Daily News endorsed John Kerry in 2004.
Read the full Obama endorsement after the jump.
Obama for president
Palin’s rise captivates us but nation needs a steady hand
Alaska enters its 50th-anniversary year in the glow of an improbable and highly memorable event: the nomination of Gov. Sarah Palin as the Republican vice presidential candidate. For the first time ever, an Alaskan is making a serious bid for national office, and in doing so she brings broad attention and recognition not only to herself, but also to the state she leads.
Alaska’s founders were optimistic people, but even the most farsighted might have been stretched to imagine this scenario. No matter the outcome in November, this election will mark a signal moment in the history of the 49th state. Many Alaskans are proud to see their governor, and their state, so prominent on the national stage.
Gov. Palin’s nomination clearly alters the landscape for Alaskans as we survey this race for the presidency — but it does not overwhelm all other judgment. The election, after all is said and done, is not about Sarah Palin, and our sober view is that her running mate, Sen. John McCain, is the wrong choice for president at this critical time for our nation.
Sen. Barack Obama, the Democratic nominee, brings far more promise to the office. In a time of grave economic crisis, he displays thoughtful analysis, enlists wise counsel and operates with a cool, steady hand. The same cannot be said of Sen. McCain.
Since his early acknowledgement that economic policy is not his strong suit, Sen. McCain has stumbled and fumbled badly in dealing with the accelerating crisis as it emerged. He declared that “the fundamentals of our economy are strong” at 9 a.m. one day and by 11 a.m. was describing an economy in crisis. He is both a longtime advocate of less market regulation and a supporter of the huge taxpayer-funded Wall Street bailout. His behavior in this crisis — erratic is a kind description — shows him to be ill-equipped to lead the essential effort of reining in a runaway financial system and setting an anxious nation on course to economic recovery.
Sen. Obama warned regulators and the nation 19 months ago that the subprime lending crisis was a disaster in the making. Sen. McCain backed tighter rules for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, but didn’t do much to advance that legislation. Of the two candidates, Sen. Obama better understands the mortgage meltdown’s root causes and has the judgment and intelligence to shape a solution, as well as the leadership to rally the country behind it. It is easy to look at Sen. Obama and see a return to the smart, bipartisan economic policies of the last Democratic administration in Washington, which left the country with the momentum of growth and a budget surplus that President George Bush has squandered.
On the most important issue of the day, Sen. Obama is a clear choice.
Sen. McCain describes himself as a maverick, by which he seems to mean that he spent 25 years trying unsuccessfully to persuade his own party to follow his bipartisan, centrist lead. Sadly, maverick John McCain didn’t show up for the campaign. Instead we have candidate McCain, who embraces the extreme Republican orthodoxy he once resisted and cynically asks Americans to buy for another four years.
It is Sen. Obama who truly promises fundamental change in Washington. You need look no further than the guilt-by-association lies and sound-bite distortions of the degenerating McCain campaign to see how readily he embraces the divisive, fear-mongering tactics of Karl Rove. And while Sen. McCain points to the fragile success of the troop surge in stabilizing conditions in Iraq, it is also plain that he was fundamentally wrong about the more crucial early decisions. Contrary to his assurances, we were not greeted as liberators; it was not a short, easy war; and Americans — not Iraqi oil — have had to pay for it. It was Sen. Obama who more clearly saw the danger ahead.
The unqualified endorsement of Sen. Obama by a seasoned, respected soldier and diplomat like Gen. Colin Powell, a Republican icon, should reassure all Americans that the Democratic candidate will pass muster as commander in chief.
On a matter of parochial interest, Sen. Obama opposes the opening of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, but so does Sen. McCain. We think both are wrong, and hope a President Obama can be convinced to support environmentally responsible development of that resource.

My grandson, who is a teen and almost out of highschool, has given Obama’s tax plan. He thinks it is a great plan, his dad can quit his job that takes him all over the country and out of it for years at a time, and get a job locally and let Obama give him some one elses money instead of his dad paying not only his regular taxes but $14,000+ more for working like he does. He thinks since the taxes are going up and Obama is giving away money then come home, earn less and get the extra from Obama. He also told his mom that you do not need to get a good job and education on Obama’s plan because from what he gathers everyone will end up making the same thing only some will have to work hard and others can work at McDonalds and they all will get about the same.
Thank you Obama for teaching our children this valuable lesson.
Just goes to show pay offs can buy anything. Obama closed out the news media in Florida and bought Alaska news. Just how much did Obama pay the newspaper for his endorsement? Why would you as a newspaper endorse someone for which your entire state is against? Money. Pay Offs. I will campaign against tourism in Alaska! We the people have the right to know why other than money and power the newspaper has such a hatred for America. Why not explain to Fox News!!!!!! Leave the Union! Who needs you! Go Sarah Palin!!!! I hope she moves back to the lower 48 states. If we take away your fishing rights and oil you will be nothing more than a country of Alcholics……………Why in the world under God would you want to destroy your State!!!!! From the lower 48–we love Sarah Palin!!!!!!
Palin is an empty (expensive) suit, and an embarrassment to the Republican ticket.
One more newspaper trying their best to elect Obama for President. So what else is new?
This paper endorsed Kerry in 2004 as well.
This doesn’t mean a hill of beans to anyone who wants what’s best for this country and all who know that will be voting for McCain/Palin despite of the liberal media and all their biased endorsements.
God Bless America!!
The paper is correct in that McCain/Palin are too risky for AMerica.
I do not agree Palin is our future. She revealed too much of the “real” Palin and that image will never go away. SNL made her the laughing stock of America with help from Palin herself. The blame falls squarely on Palin-a character flaw will not allow her to acknowledge that fact. It was McCain’s tragic mistake to tap her and it led to his demise.
A sad but true story.
As an Alaskan resident who has lived here since 1963, I can tell you that the Anchorage Daily News does not speak for the majority of the Alaskans in this state. We have not had a decent newspaper in Anchorage since the Anchorage Times closed their doors. For those of you who wonder why The Anchorage Daily News is supporting Obama, let me give you a clue, THEY ARE OWNED BY A CALIFORNIA COMPANY (McClatchy Newspapers) and they have always sided with the Democrats throughout the history of their newspaper here in Anchorage. Nothing new to those of us that live in this state and are not Democrats.
So on that note, for those of you that may think this is a “big deal” it’s not. We who live in Alaska know full well the political views of The Anchorage Daily News and are not surprised by their endorsement. Suffice it to say that the MAJORITY of us in Alaska do support McCain/Palin and the endorsement by our California-owned newspaper doesn’t make a difference to us.
THE LADY IS A ROGUE TRAMP
(The Lady is A Tramp, Frank Sinatra)
WilliamBanzai7
Sung by John McBlame:
She’s just too hungry, for a Vice Presidential date
She loves political mud slinging, never heard of Watergate
She’d never bother, with “UnAmerican” voters she hates
Thats why the lady is a rogue tramp
Doesnt like to play games, with media barons and earls
Would only go to campaigning, in ermine and pearls
Will dish the dirt, unlike the rest of us girls
Thats why the lady is a rogue tramp
She loves the free, fresh permafrost wind in her hair
Northern redneck life without care
Shes broke, but its ok the RNC’s there
She loves her trailer camp even though, its cold and its damp
Thats why the lady is a rogue tramp
Doesnt like strategy games, with sharpies and aides
Won’t get on the bus unless its prepaid
Will dish out more campaign dirt, than the rest of us broads
Thats why the lady is a rogue tramp
Aw, let her keep the clothes and send her home. Pay her tuition for a few undergraduate classes in international relations and world history, and she’ll be fine in 2012. Still hot, too.
Obama really puts the krap in Elkrapaho.
I live in Anchorage and the “Anchorage Daily News” is just another part of the left wing nut jobs who would seek to destroy her. They don’t mention how they have been dumped by the majority in this state. No one takes their paper anymore. They call BEGGING for subscribers CONSTANTLY. They run ads on TV to BEG for subscribers. They are TOAST in this state. You’ll all see that McCain/Palin will take this state with NO PROBLEM.
Looks like a lot of intelligent people, including newspaper editors of Alaska (bastion of conservativism) are “drinking the kool-aid” as the right-wing nammering nabobs of negativism like to say. Hmmm. Hope we all can move forward and work TOGETHER to improve our nation, not back-stab, snipe and assasinate character as has typically been done in the past.
I think they have there head in the snow! Obama has less experience than Palin and he would be the president right away, I do not understand how people can keep saying the 1 heatbeat away issue. The attacks are plain and simple, Obama lied about all those radical friends of his and we do not need a president who does not tell the truth and lies about everything if it makes him look bad. I just do not understand how people can ignore that. I know he is black and the press wants a black man to win for the history books, please use your brain people and think about what will happen to the USA if the president lies to us every other day.
SusieQ ..please calm down. Palins are not who you think they are.
Have you read the AP article: ’Bidding Process for Palin’s Pipeline was flawed’? If true, that could mean the end of her political career at best.
Governor Palin will be more ready to take on the mantle of President of the USA in 2012 - provided she picks Jerry Springer as her running mate.
At the present time, even Nancy Reagan with her broken pelvis would make a better VP.
Who can trust John McCain as President when he picks out bimbos like Palin to be part of his team?
As an Alaskan resident since 1963 I can tell you that the endorsement by The Anchorage Daily News doesn’t mean anything to those of us that live here. This endorsement isn’t a surprise for us, and do you know why? Because The Anchorage Daily News is OWNED BY A CALIFORNIA company (McClatchy Newspapers) and they have always sided with the Democrats in everything they print in their paper. We have not had a decent newspaper in this state since The Anchorage Times (a true Alaskan-owned newspaper) closed their doors.
So on that note, if you think that the residents of the State of Alaska don’t support McCain/Palin then you need to think again. The MAJORITY of the residents of this state have nothing but the highest respect for Governor Palin and what she has done in office during her short tenure, and we will continue to stand by her, regardless of what our California-owned newspaper says or who they endorse.
Leave it to skewed views to read specifically what the article says and gloss it over as if it wasnt specific. Is it so hard to believe that the paper has a different opinion? Remember, the NY Post endorsed McCain and that state is pretty much for Obama.. Let’s attack anyone who doesnt agree with us as un american… That’s real patriotic…
I think your grandson should do a little research before making statements like.
I cannot believe all the conservatives are getting so edgy. Sen. Obama is going to make a great President and he brings the change that this country needs. Who in the world would want to be in this mess that the Republicans have made for another 4 - 8 years. There will be no money left if the Republicans take office again. The country will be totally bankrupt.
This is the most intellectual and objective analysis i have read about an endorsement. I am highly impressed about this analysis. With this kind of analysis every undecided voter will be able to decide and vote for Obama. Fox news please stop the negativity and finally be fair to Obama, if he can run such as campaign i have no worries he would run a better country. My father said a good president runs a good compaign.
“Why would you as a newspaper endorse someone for which your entire state is voting for? No risk in losing readers.”
Even Alaskans know she’s not qualified, period. We are lucky though because after Nov. 4th, she can go back to Alaska and keep an eye on Putin and make sure he doesn’t rear his head in America.
Her exact words “As Putin rears his head and comes into the air space of the United States of America, where do they go? It’s Alaska. It’s just right over the border. It is from Alaska that we send those out to make sure that an eye is being kept on this very powerful nation, Russia, because they are right next to, they are right next to our state”.
She’s a remarkable woman though I must say, she is courageous for going after a job she is clearly not qualified for, not only is she not informed regarding foriegn affairs but she claims to be such an advocate for the disabled but watch her demonstrate her knowledge on scientific research:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wezdbLqRnzs
The only way we as Americans can judge whether or not she is qualified is to consider what we have seen of her in the past 2 months and I must say my mind is made up, at this time in her career, she is not qualified to be a heartbeat away from being the President of the United States of America and that is one of the many reasons I will be voting the Obama/Biden ticket for a change we desparately need.
What a shame that our newspapers are not reporting the news. Now they all believe they should endorse a candidate and coerce us to vote their way. I am very disappointed and have discontinued buying certain papers and magazines and watching some news channels. I am sick of biased news coverage!
Kay? Is English your second language? I have reread your comments and I believe you might be trying to intimate through your “son’s” analysis that the Obama proposed policies are socialist.
Also, since your syntax and thought process is very similar to Susie, are you the same people?
Unless you are making more than $250,000 your taxes would not go up. If you did make more than $250,000 your taxes would go up about 3%.
If a 3% increase in taxes is enough for your husband to make some silly decision to quit his job then no one can protect him from himself and his very poor choice.
Kay: Your grandson is an idiot. And it looks like the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.
SusieQ, Please speak for yourself. What gives you the right to speak for people in 48 states? You don’t.
I don’t support Sarah for all the reasons listed in the article and your tired out argument that an endorsement can be bought, just demonstrates how poorly informed you are.
As for the high schooler, as a grandparent, where are you in all of this? And since when are high schoolers the font of knowledge and understanding? And you know darn well that Obama’s plan does not support what this kid is saying. If you really have a grandson, please have him do some research and compare the two tax plans, and then see what he thinks.
The American people never cease to amaze. Sarah cries out that “you would better know what to do with your money than the government.” I agree. I don’t think the Alaskan people would have privately funded the bridge to nowhere. I don’t think the people would have borrowed from the Chinese to pay the Saudi’s to fund the war in Iraq. I don’t think the American people would have spent 700 billion to send AIG on a 400,000 junket.
But…the iamage that stays in my mind is 9/11. If we have to endure another attack; and the President is aboard Air Force 1; who would be better suited to man the White House Situation Room? Palin or Biden?
Couldn’t a Maverick also be known as a ROUGE?
Not all of us in the lower 48 love Sarah. Some of us think she should hop on a dog sled and make her way back to Alaska to face the music. Maybe a large sled so she can take those fancy duds back to the GoodWill store in Wasilla.
I am heartened by the overwhelming number of newspaper endorsements for Barack Obama, and particularly appreciate that from The Alaska Daily News.
I urge supporters to accelerate their efforts at this point, because the only thing that can keep Obama out of office now is complacency.
Craig Ferguson did a hilarious bit about a woman shopping for her “Obama Victory Party”. She breathlessy went through her list, checking off crucial items, and at the last moment gasped, “I FORGOT TO VOTE!”
Very funny, but then again, not so much.
I can’t believe what I’m reading and seeing from the press anymore. Their reasons to support the Democratic ticket and the whole liberal bunch beneath them are laughable if not sad. This whole Obama love fest is a complete sham bought with 500 million dollars. He is no more qualified to run a state let alone the country. His experience is zilch-why is he getting a free pass on this?
Kay, thanks for sharing this story. Wow, this’s the values we’re going to carry on from now on? Sad. Vote McCain!! values matters!!!
Generally, you can expect the media to back Obama - no surprise there.
Dont you just love seeing these Republicrites whine…whine..whine…take their football and go home..so when Mrs. Palin taxes the oil corps and gives back to the people because of excessive profits its being an american..but if obama does the same thing she calls it socialism!!!! is there a bigger hypocrite breathing than Palin???? maybe she is right…people like Buffett, Volcker, and the many more are socialists..maybe Colin Powell is nothing but a biased coward??? and maybe average hockey moms do pay a makeup consultant $10,000 a wk for help..maybe they shop at Neiman Marcus everyday..maybe the average american charges taxpayers to be at home on Sundays with their family…and then again maybe the average american is nothing like Sarah Palin!!! and if you believe one word Mrs. Palin says I have a bridge to nowhere I will sell you for $300 million, of course funded by the taxpayers..lets not forget the 2 million for crab mating and 3 million for Sea Lion DNA study she has requested!!!!!!!
Go Obama/Biden!
You are in the last stretch of this race finishing as the winners that you are. Our whole household has already put in our votes for you. We will be having a victory party in your honor.
We here in the great state of Alaska, know that the Anchorage Daily News is ONLY good for wrapping our fish carcasses……way to go ADN. (Anchorage Democrat Newsrag) GO!! McCain/Palin ‘08
The two previous comments prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the average American citizen is an idiot. And these people vote! They would be better off locked in their outhouse! Sarah Palin is an uneducated fool who and has proven herself to be a complete embarrassment to the Republican Party and to her fellow Americans.
I love fox news. finally saying no to small minded politics. Go Obama!
The saddest part about blogging lately is having to see first hand just how uninformed and tragically partisan my fellow Americans have become. The first comment about Obama with regard to “pay offs” lacks credibility, is false and isn’t even worth responding to, albeit it is rather amusing (again, in a sad manner). The second comment, again, is just a whiney session of someones opinion that lacks any facts or numbers to support that indivisuals position. The line “he told his mom that you don’t need to get a good job and education”…blah, blah, blah, but “work at McDonalds and get the same”. I’ll tell you what, if you you really truly believe that you are going to be getting the same as an educated person while employed at McDonalds, I look forward to ordering milkshakes from you in the future. You probably can’t wait to buy that big house you’ve always wanted. Idiot.
People, we have some serious issues happening in this country and we better right the ship before things get worse. Can we please try raise the level of expectations from those that we elect to tackle these problems?
[...] Anchorage Daily News endorses [...]
Incredible! The liberal bias of the media is enough to make me puke.
Palin is the best of the four people running, by far.
McCain/Palin 08!
Could it be that most newspapers are NOT endorsing McCain / Palin because they are not their “type”??
[...] link: Alaska’s Biggest Paper Backs Obama [...]
The Anchorage Daily News is owned BY OUT OF STATE INTERESTS!!! They are not locally owned!!! For once I would like to see you jerks in the MEDIA TELL THE TRUTH and the WHOLE TRUTH!!!
If, in fact, Obama truly did bribe the thoughtful, er…I meant to say un-patriotic newspapers, then I can only assume that he spent as much as Gov. Palin has on her wardrobe (not to mention make-up) for the campaign. I can’t help but admire politicians who are gutsy enough to say, point blank, that they represent “the little guy”, “the underdog” and ” joe six-pack” while frivolously spending tax money on clothing and cosmetics (so that ‘Joe’ will still find her appealing on E-Day), oh yeah, and Hollywood-inspired smear ads. Guess what, the ‘lower 48′ is welcome to Mrs.Palin; just make sure she doesn’t get to reign over the education system, I hear that she’s notorious for wanting to ban books, or was that just a rumour that the liberal media conjured up? ; )
I am from Alaska and have been mortified for the last couple months. Am I the only one in Alaska that knows what a joke this ticket is. Thank you Anchorage Daily News! I havent stopped smiling all day!!!!! Obama/Biden
The previous posts prove beyond a reasonable doubt what complete idiots the average American voter really is. They should be locked in their outhouse and not be allowed to vote. Sarah Palin has proven herself to be an uneducated hick. She would be before off “speaking in tongues” at the local mental institution (Assembly of God church) than representing the Republican Party on the campaign trail. What an embarrassment! My vote for McCain has gone AWOL! That’s what he deserves for picking “a hockey mom” who’s claim to fame now is that a few conservative commentators openly admit they have masturbated watching her give a speech!
[...] link: Alaska’s Biggest Paper Backs Obama [...]
Barack Obama has also spent over $21.5 in polling ….. almost 15 times as much as McCain spent in this area. Do you think some of those pollsters might have been bought and paid for……to give skewed results, so that conservatives are demoralized? Hmm.mm..m…….I wonder. McCain Supporters….do not….do not…give up. The only poll that counts is the one on election day. Even if the news does not look so hot on that day….go vote anyway! So many states are doing mail-in ballots….it may not be known for days who won the election. Do not heed voter fraud, do not listen to media pundits…..just get everyone who supports McCain/Palin out to vote…..envision each vote being the magnet draws many more votes in. Remember…..country first!
Ok, this is a fox news blog and the only two comments represent the most idiotic view points possible from either party, not surprising. This is some common sense from a life long Alaskan and you might be surprised SusieQ that i am in fact sober enough to spell correctly, unlike yourself.
The Anchorage Daily News article is not a pay off, not a buy out, not Fox News. The editor of that paper choose to endorse Obama because we are quite sick and tired of lying republicans and incapable leadership around these parts. Anyone with half a brain would not go to Sarah Palin to manage their longterm investments and retirement savings, why would you want to entrust to her the economic future of the entire country? We are not such alcoholic, oil worshiping white trash as some people would ignorantly imply. We want smart leadership from a capable president the same as anyone else in any other state, and the national majority seems to agree that this person is not John McCain.
If the Anchorage newspaper thinks Obama will bring us back to the policies of the Clinton Adminstration they should think again. the best policies of the Clinton years were those that he adopted while he had a Republican Congress and pretty much jumped on board with their policies. This Congress is totally different and the Dems under Pelosi would never have gone along with these.
Um, Being an Alaskan from Anchorage, I have personally witnessed the unabashed smears that the Anchorage Daily News has initiated against Sarah Palin. These smears started when it was rumored that she was being vetted for VP and continue to this day, there has even been times that they outright slandered her. The Anchorage Daily News of course backs Obama because their readership went up when they started slamming Sarah Palin and the Anchorage Daily News is NOT a hometown newspaper, it is owned by the McClatchy corporation who does not support Rebublicans.
Kind of tells the story. The voters’ fears can’t be of regulation or of social programs or of tax increases for the top 5%; rather the fear has to be of continued deregulation corrupted by greed and dishonesty and of continued neglect and apathy for the majority and of continuing patronizing and placating those stuffing their pockets and behind all of the problems. The Republicans deserve to be really ‘spanked’ and even more importantly we just desperately need real change addressing the problems and needs of all Americans without the Republicans blocking it with their continuing focus on Special Interests and a select few. The Republicans are not the party they once were and they simply can’t be trusted. Even they, in desperation, admit that we need real change but now try to say we should fear Democratic control and spending, when they had eight years of leading the country with the result being the largest spending government, with more pork barrel, the largest national debt, after being given a surplus, the largest loss of jobs and all of the other drastic problems we face in our economy, country and globally. The Republican arrogance and self-serving irresponsibility has been clearly demonstrated and now the major challenge for the voters is to strongly support turning it all around. The voters literally need to ignore everything everyone is saying and simply recognize that we desperately need real change, complete change in order to accomplish the challenges we face! We really can’t take any more of the same.
By “we” you mean the base, SusieQ.
People have VERY mixed feelings towards Palin. Personally i think she was a great pick for VP at first, but in light of recent events i just cannot take her seriously. That being said i’m still on the fence on who to vote for.
SuzieQ, I have read your twisted views before and seem to have an excuse for everything. Speak for yourself, I know a LOT of McCain supporters who do not like Palin and are upset McCain chose her. From what I have read put out by the McCain camp, they are clearly regretting chosing her for the VP slot too. Are you going to say that’s makeup too? I’m guessing by your hate-filled name calling posts you also concider yourself a “good and loving Christian.” Sadly, YOU are exactly the type of Christian who turn people off.
SusieQ: Are you daft or just ignorant? Obama closed the door on ONE newspaper for alluding to Obama as a Marxist. ALL pundits agree Obama is not a Marxist. By the way, their are some very good ideas in Marxism. Have you ever read it? NO, your just ignorant. And where is your proof that Obama bought Alaska’s endorsement. Exactly, no evidence!!! You are like the other inbred, redneck radical right wing wackos who will say anything and do anything to have Mcsame win! You are as dangerous as the Nazi’s and I would not trust you for one bit.
SusieQ,
I am from Alaska. And I trust my newspaper.
You are in a fantasy world. The newspaper does need to be paid off to tell the truth. Probably you should check your brains.
Tom
Kay,
Sadly you miss the point - I teach my children to study hard and make good money. But I do not tell them that making more money should entitle them to pay less tax - that is rubbish. I fall in the bracket which will pay more tax under Obama - but guess what, Bush has made me feel so guilty over the years, getting the undeserved tax cut (which I wasted on expensive vacations) that I am willing to pay more so that every one, whether you are a Doctor or a plumber, share the same burden.
I also think it is time for people like us to share the expenses of two wars and a financial melt down - not just the middle class and the lower middle class citizens, who have largely borne the brunt of the war.
After being a staunch conservative for the past 18 years, I finally see that this mantra about “socialism” is nothing but a cunning way of fooling 98% of the people so that the other 2% live happily ever after…trickle down economics is the most unproven, unsubstantiated theory.
Tell you children that to sustain the greatness of our country everone needs to pay - not just the middle class.
best
K
Kay - that’s funny, because that sounds like what a lot of teenagers across the political spectrum say. Because, for instance, I support Obama, and I believe that what he says (while not infallible) is far more appropriate for these times than McCain. I also hold down two jobs, work proudly in healthcare, have no issue contributing to causes I believe in, and have a family who does dinners together every Sunday night. You “they’re not like us” folks need to stop being so xenophobic and look in the mirror more often. People are people, and no matter who’s in charge, or what’s going on, people are going to continue being people. Fools in both parties, and valid points as well.
@SusieQ
Please do not bring my heavenly father’s name into a remark so full of vile hatred based on what you’ve been told, not what you know. Why does there always have to be some “evil” behind everything the left does, is this not a free country? Did not our fore fathers create our constitution, declaration of independence, and bill of right so that we might all have differing opinions and it be ok? I’m very saddened by the way my Republican Party has tuned into the very thing our heavenly father hates more than anything else in this world…..Jesus said the greatest commandment is to love one another as yourself. Also, just remember, no matter who is elected, God knew about it before it happened and is according to his great plan, He’s in control!
Look up Bonney Kapp Journalist of this article, totally brainwashed by Obama’s camp.
Once again another journalist degrading journalism.
It’s very difficult to find fair and balanced reports anymore.
Wow, Nice Kay, throw your children under the bus. How shameless. Regardless, it sounds like your grandkids miss there parents and would like to spend more time with them.
And for SusieQ. You just said that the majority of Alaska still supports McCain, but then in order to punish what you claim is a very select few you’d destroy the whole state by boycotting tourism and taking away all their resources. Very patriotic of you. You are advocating just the opposite of everything John McCain stands for. You aren’t doing him any favours with that blurb. I have known a few Alaskans and they are a very good people, and not a bunch of alcholics as you suggest.
Both of you shame this country by suggesting voting in an election is anti-patriotic. Voting is the highest form of patriotism and even though they may not be voting for who you support, you have no right to condemn them for doing their civic duty.
Stop and consider, you are pretty much in the tank for McCain and nothing will convince you otherwise. The same goes for Obama supporters. At this point in the race it is too late to change minds. That leaves the independents who will decide this election. With the sort of hate speech I see so often these forums and errational view and bad grammer, you are sending those independents running to the Obama camp.
Ultimately, because of the hate speech, it will be the McCain supporters who will defeat the republicans this election and not the media or any strategy of Obama’s.
Alaskan’s please don’t buy these newspapers anymore.
Mike Hance from western NY
SusieQ and others who take the anchorage daily news’ endorsement seriously, lighten up. They hold less sway every year and thankfully so. More newspapers are losing money today than are profitable. Fortunately, these newspapers are going away. The political ads serve as de facto payoffs for editor’s favorable comments. Those in the great state of Alaska have a great opportunity to make their own choice, vote your hearts at the polls and vote with your advertising dollars for the sources of your information. Craig’s, Annie’s and other sites can be used for classifieds and there are small local papers that support your views and, more importantly, your Governor. Why would an Alaskan conduct business with a store, dealership, business, coffee shop, or individuals that advertise in the paper that chose to support the Governor’s opponent. Put that paper on notice, that as Alaskans, you have your right to choose the candidate, newspaper and businesses that reflect your values.
Vote with your heart and your pocketbook.
Skeptics are always going to be skeptics regardless.
I am one of those people that makes more than $250K per year and will be paying more taxes when Obama takes the lead of this country, but I can afford it. And in this time in our country, I can’t see how the Repubs can say with a straight face, that lowering everyone’s taxes will generate more jobs and jump start our economy. We just had eight years of that prescription…hmmm…how did that work out? We have, just in this year, lost over 750K jobs…in an era of the Bush tax cuts…So what have we done? We have lowered taxes and increased spending…So how do we pay our bills? We borrow money and get further and further into debt (we owe over $500B to the Chinese). Kay if you want your teenaged grandson to have a fruitful life, then YOU teach him that continually borrowing money doesn’t lead to financial prosperity. And SusieQ, now that the Democrats have raised more money than the Republicans in this election, you talk about payoffs? All I have to say is turnabout is fair play…Sorry but now it’s the Dems turn to run things. The Repubs had their chance…control of the Presidency, Congress, and the Senate and they blew it…miserably.
Kay, I feel bad for you that you have a Grandson who is so uneducated. As the teen’s Grandmother I would hope that you would be able to take the time out to sit your Grandson down and explain Obama’s true tax plan that is going to actually benefit the middle and lower class. From the things you say about your Grandson, he is probably better off working at McDonalds, because he is clearly not college material.
I suggest if people are interested in learning the truth about the candidates that they visit factcheck.org

>Mr Kay
>My grandson, who is a teen and almost out of highschool, has given Obama’s tax plan. He thinks it >is a great plan, his dad can …
Your comments are childish; if poeple go with your polarized views, the black or white theory, any kind of tax system is a step towards socialism. ’socialism’ is a loaded word, we have not reached that threshold. Like, few gray hairs does not turn black person in to a white(a crude logic).
The voice of reason getting louder ?
I would say to Obama “GET OUT OF DODGE”
I woould say to McCain “HANG IN THERE”
I think McCains shoould let the people know what Pelosie and the Democrats are already discussing such as canceling the 401 K plan for the working class and forcing them to pay 5% into a Government controlled plan.
I would like to know where Obama’s money is coming from, it is clear he will have a lot of expensive favors to pay back at the Taxpayers expense.
Also I would like to know how they know that all these votes they claim were for Obama, I did not think they were to be opened until after the election closed on Nov. 4 ??????
Dear Alaskans, Take this endorsement as an opportunity. You choose who you vote for. You can control the newspaper you buy. Furthermore, you can choose to do business with the businesses that advertise with the newspaper, or you can choose not to. Vote in the booth with your heart. Vote with your pocketbook on who you do business with.
“Yet despite her formidable gifts”
Say what?
They won’t even let her on “Meet the Press” because she can’t form coherent sentences, much less coherent answers.
The lady doesn’t even READ.
SusieQ and Kay are perfect representatives of the GOP. Neither one makes a lick of sense but that does not stop either one from ranting. And SusieQ’s copious and unnecessary use of exclamation points simply underscores the churlishness of her bleating nonsensical tirade. She asserts without evidence that Sen. Obama “bought” the Alaska Daily News’s opinion. Why? Because she didn’t agree with its opinion. Assuming, of course, that she even read the opinion. If she had read it, she would see that there are very good reasons for preferring Sen. Obama to Sen. McCain. Here are three, from the paper’s opinion, that cannot be disputed.
1 - McCain has not a clue about the economy or how to fix the crisis. You don’t say the fundamentals are strong at 9 am and then tell us we’re in a crisis at 11 am on the same day if you expect to be taken seriously.
2 - McCain has run a ridiculously erratic campaign, always shifting from one foolish tactic to the next without any theme except “We’re Clearly Winging It.” You don’t pretend to suspend your campaign and slowly make your way to D.C. (after being interviewed by Couric instead of going on Letterman, after sleeping in your hotel, after going to the Clinton Global Initiative the next day, and after going on the Rachel Ray cooking show), only to sit there at the White House meeting with your hands folded and your eyes down, like a student who didn’t do the reading and hopes to avoid being called upon by the professor, if you expect to be seen as a leader.
3 - McCain picked a joke of a running mate. She is good at insulting community organizers and playing stupid guilt-by-association games (that McCain is far more vulnerable to if only Obama would play that same stupid game — see, e.g., G. Gordon Liddy, Charles Keating, and Phil Gramm for example). But she is hopelessly out of her depth. She still does not know what the VP does. Nor does she recognize that fruit flies have in fact taught us a lot about autism. Why in the world would she give a policy speech about special needs children and mock the very research that helps them? Oh that’s right, because she thinks genetics and science in general are jokes. She believes dinosaurs walked the earth at the same time humans did. Name one dinosaur other than McCain who has done so. She does not know that opposition to Roe v. Wade while asserting that there is a Constitutional “right to privacy” is nonsensical. She th
