Joe’s No Dick Cheney (Or Sarah Palin)

RALEIGH, NC — Joe Biden laughed off John McCain’s attempt to compare his running mate Barack Obama to President Bush today — and made it clear that he’s no Dick Cheney, either.

In a statement on the higher-than-expected number of unemployment claims this week, the GOP nominee said only he has a plan to create new jobs. “Barack Obama’s only answer is to double-down on the Bush Administration’s legacy of out-of-control spending, raise taxes on small businesses, impose mandates on employers, and raise trade barriers — a time-proven recipe for turning tough economic times into terrible economic circumstances,” McCain said.

At a late-night outdoor rally, Biden again tried to put the campaign in terms this NASCAR-happy state would understand.

“Right now, our campaigns are trading paint. That means we’re banging into each other. But what most worries me is the McCain campaign, to use a term we’re all familiar with is getting a little loose on the road out there,” Biden said.

“Just today, John McCain tried to compare Barack Obama to George Bush.” Boos rained down from the incredulous crowd.

“No really!” Biden continued. “I mean, you know, talk about the willing suspension of disbelief! I mean, pretty soon he’s going to be calling me Dick Cheney. And that wouldn’t be good.”

“Well let me tell you, at least I know what the Vice President does,” he said.

Cheney has disputed that he’s part of either the executive or the legislative branch — but GOP VP nominee Sarah Palin has also overstated the role of the Vice President in recent days, telling a group of young students that the VP “runs the senate.”

So was Biden delivering a smack-down to his Republican rival? Maybe — but, explicitly at least, he focused on the current second-in-command.

“Vice President Cheney said he’s not a part of an either branch or something like that, I don’t know,” Biden said. “And we are not in an undisclosed location.”

Joe Biden could only improve in stature as well as Obama if they were more like them. At least we would be aware of the record of truth, even if we didn’t agree with it in hindsight. Dick Cheney however is a 100% stand up guy. And he is no wimp.

How anything that gafmeister Joe says can be taken seriously is beyond me. “Stand up Chuck, let ‘em see ya.” How about that 3 letter word J-O-B-S. Or better yet FDR adressing America as President on TV. There are too many to list. Joe is the GOP’s greatest asset. Keep on talking Joe, you da man.

It’s comforting to know that Biden will just sit back and do nothing as a vice president. At least that will get his lame-duck self out of the voting field of the Senate and open it up to someone with more youth and ambition. Senators need term limits… something far less than SIX.

Yep, a “dunce”. Sarah Palin has more executive experience than a Biden or an Obama. Unless I’m mistaken, “Gaff” Biden didn’t know what the VP did originally either.

The fact that the media has spent so much time scrutinizing every little thing that Gov. Palin has done and said since she was first announced at Sen. McCain’s running mate means that they and the Obama campaign are running scared! Unfortunately the financial crisis has dominated the headlines and put Obama out in front in the polls. Remember, Obama and Biden have done absolutely NOTHING to get this advantage. Before the financial crisis McCain and Palin were ahead in this race. The media ignores Biden because they know he is a gaffe machine and simply will not cover anything this man says because they want Obama to win this election. The fact that the media is still hyperventilating over Gov. Palin means that she is a woman to be reckoned with now and in the future of American politics.

Comment by jmf

Biden is a joke. The media knows this which explains why they ignore this man completely. Obama got no poll bounce when he announced Biden as his running mate. McCain, on the other hand, did get a bounce with the selection of Palin. The media went nuts on this woman because they saw her appeal and her successful record as Governor of Alaska. Obama and Biden have only benifited from the financial crisis. They have done absolutely NOTHING to turn the polls in their favor. People need to realize this. Obama, Biden and other liberal Democrats are responsible for the current financial crisis. Americans need to wake up!

Comment by Rugo H

Mccain understood it wrong that winning ticket is Joe, he went picked up wrong Joe and wrong runningmate, Obama/Biden 2008 good future for the country.

Comment by phd

Senator Biden appears to be ranting and raving more each day…. He even looks out of control. Could he be ill? Perhaps that would explain so many errors in his memory and speech delivery. It is incredible that he thought, and actually said to Katie Curic, that FDR turned on the TV and addressed the American people regarding the first stock market crash…… ( FDR wasn’t president and there were no televisions in homes). Am still wondering why the media paid so little attention to those remarks. It is frightening to think that he would be a ‘heartbeat’ away from the presidency if Obama is elected. Govenor Palin has definitely proven to be the more ready, capable, and intelligent VP candidate……

Comment by Paul from Kissimmee

I have to admit, Biden really did add some humor to this election. Stand up Chuck! Stand up! Let them see ya. Oh my God, what am I saying? They should put his speeches on pay per view to raise extra money for the GOP.

Comment by JYow

Um…in response to the above.

Sarah Palin has been given four seperate opportunities in the public media to explain the duties of the VP. She has been incorrect each time. In fact, she’s had the same answer each time, which shows that not only was she wrong, she didn’t bother to correct herself.

Two, for the rest of Joe Biden’s speech today, he spoke of this being the time for all Americans, Democrats, Republicans, and Independants, to stand together. He spoke about the end of divisive politics. He gave specific examples of the policy changes he and Obama are intending to push forward. He asked us to believe that we, as a country, could stand back up and overcome the impending economic and international crisis.

McCain spent his speech asking us all to believe in Joe the Plumber, a story that has been proven to be a fabrication. Giving him the benefit of the doubt, he asked us to follow an example of a man who works for himself, and expects nothing more than what he can do for himself. I respect that. However, I do not believe it is ’socialism’ to suggest that taxes should be more evenly distributed. Currently, the middle and lower class are paying 90% of all taxes. Under Obama’s plan, perhaps people who own their own business and are doing well for themselves, making over $250,000 a year, will have higher taxes. To you this may seem unfair. If I were making this amount of money, I would hope someone would remind me of what those tax dollars do. They support education, the military, public services like EMS and the police, as well as the government. It is unpatriotic to support those institutions? It is unpatriotic to pay the military, the teachers, the cops, the paramedics? We have a massive debt to pay. How else are we going to pay it back? Have we forgotten that even after a redistribution of taxation, the middle and lower class will still be paying taxes? I make below the poverty line, and I pay a third of my income to the government. My family is also employed by the state. My father is a teacher, my step-mom is a nurse. I find paying my taxes to be a civic duty, a responsibility to care for the community above myself, and I see the benefits of it every day. For all the Joe the Plumbers out there making a quarter of a million dollars a year, I think you could spare a bit too. Do all of the employees of small businesses make that much money? Doubtful. I would like McCain to explain to me why the rich get to stay rich, while the poor keep paying the bill. I would also love to hear some specifics about just what he intends to do if elected. Surely attacking Obama will lose it’s appeal come January, and then where will he be?

Vote for the person who makes sense. Some of us may pay a little more. Some of us may get to save a little more. A tax cut is not going to make the poor rich. A tax hike is not going to make the rich poor. We will all benefit, however, when the country pays off its debt, ends the wars, and begins to focus on using our money to improve our country. We cannot be selfish any longer, we must begin thinking of society as a whole and seeing ourselves as a part of it. Maybe then we’ll make some progress.

Comment by Obamasaloosah

Why hasn’t Biden made himself available to the media? Hmmm DOUBLE STANDARD!! Biden’s previous health issues - downplayed by the media, Biden’s view of Obama in the Primary Season - downplayed by the media, Biden’s talk of there being an international incident - downplayed by the media. I think the people voting for Obama-Biden are drinking some kind of koolaid, but what makes it worse is that the media has a KoolAid Stand set up and are selling it!

Comment by Maurice

What a bunch of dummies. The person said: Currently, the middle and lower class are paying 90% of all taxes. No, 40% of people in this country pay no taxes and the top 20 % of income earners pay 90 % of the tax collected. Some people are too dumb to vote !

The Neocon ticket is doomed because of Palin. Peggy Noonan characterizes Palin perfectly:

[W]e have seen Mrs. Palin on the national stage for seven weeks now, and there is little sign that she has the tools, the equipment, the knowledge or the philosophical grounding one hopes for, and expects, in a holder of high office. She is a person of great ambition, but the question remains: What is the purpose of the ambition? She wants to rise, but what for? For seven weeks I’ve listened to her, trying to understand if she is Bushian or Reaganite … But it’s unclear whether she is Bushian or Reaganite. She doesn’t think aloud. She just . . . says things.

Her supporters accuse her critics of snobbery: Maybe she’s not a big “egghead” but she has brilliant instincts and inner toughness. But what instincts? “I’m Joe Six-Pack”? She does not speak seriously but attempts to excite sensation—”palling around with terrorists.” If the Ayers case is a serious issue, treat it seriously. She is not as thoughtful or persuasive as Joe the Plumber, who in an extended cable interview Thursday made a better case for the Republican ticket than the Republican ticket has made. In the past two weeks she has spent her time throwing out tinny lines to crowds she doesn’t, really, understand. This is not a leader, this is a follower, and she follows what she imagines is the base, which is in fact a vast and broken-hearted thing whose pain she cannot, actually, imagine. She could reinspire and reinspirit; she chooses merely to excite. She doesn’t seem to understand the implications of her own thoughts.

No news conferences? Interviews now only with friendly journalists? You can’t be president or vice president and govern in that style, as a sequestered figure. This has been Mr. Bush’s style the past few years, and see where it got us. You must address America in its entirety, not as a sliver or a series of slivers but as a full and whole entity, a great nation trying to hold together. When you don’t, when you play only to your little piece, you contribute to its fracturing.

In the end the Palin candidacy is a symptom and expression of a new vulgarization in American politics. It’s no good, not for conservatism and not for the country. And yes, it is a mark against John McCain, against his judgment and idealism.

Do any of you people actually read the news beyond FOX? Why isn’t Biden available to the media? Ahh…. go ahead and do a little google work and you’ll see he’s done many, many interviews.

You guys need to travel outside the USA for a week, read some newspapers, hear people talk. Do you ever leave the 7-11 or liquor stores? Joe Six Pack. Really.

When was intelligence and sage judgment a bad thing?

Sad.

Am sure most fox news contributors lean republican. Can you guys find out why Sarah Palin does not hold press conferences and interviews. Even John Maccain doesnt hold news/press conferences on his policy proposal. But you see Obama, whenever he meet with his foreign policy team or ecomic advisors, he hold press conferences and answers tough question. This shows his intellectual ability. The Repub ticket are afraid of doing same so they dont make mistakes.

Please I beg to be corrected on this

“but GOP VP nominee Sarah Palin has also overstated the role of the Vice President in recent days, telling a group of young students that the VP “runs the senate.”
Technically JYow and Donah…she is correct. The Vice-President of the United States is known as the Presiding Officer of the Senate; also known as the President of the Senate. Granted, we hardly ever see ANY V-P’s go to the Senate for ANY reason other than to break a tie in voting, which is his/her job. BUT, it doesn’t mean that they can’t. Now if want to get into semantics as far as her choice of words, please don’t. I can give literally DOZENS of examples of Sen. Biden running at the mouth, not the LEAST of which is his totally incorrect interpretation of Articles 1 & 2 of the U.S. Constitution. Yet…no one calls him on the carpet for it. I would think that a guy who has been in Congress for 35 yrs. would know the difference between the Articles of the U.S. Constitution and what each represents/states…guess not. And no one cares…yet if Gov. Palin made such a comment, she would be torn apart. Why? Because she is a woman? Or because she is a Conservative/Republcan? Or both (Conservative woman)? People question her intelligence but yet Sen. Biden can go on and claim that FDR was President during the Great Depression and went on TV to talk to the American people…TWO mistakes in ONE comment!!! And no one cares…

Comment by Mccain2008

President of the Senate
Main article: President of the Senate
As President of the Senate (Article I, Section 3), the vice president oversees procedural matters and may cast a tie-breaking vote. There is a strong convention within the U.S. Senate that the vice president not use his or her position as President of the Senate to influence the passage of legislation or act in a partisan manner, except in the case of breaking tie votes. As President of the Senate, John Adams cast twenty-nine tie-breaking votes—a record that no successor except for John C. Calhoun ever threatened. His votes protected the president’s sole authority over the removal of appointees, influenced the location of the national capital, and prevented war with Great Britain. On at least one occasion he persuaded senators to vote against legislation that he opposed, and he frequently lectured the Senate on procedural and policy matters. Adams’ political views and his active role in the Senate made him a natural target for critics of the Washington administration. Toward the end of his first term, as a result of a threatened resolution that would have silenced him except for procedural and policy matters, he began to exercise more restraint in the hope of realizing the goal shared by many of his successors: election in his own right as president of the United States of America.

I mean really now do you Obama Supporters think anyone of you could just walk in off the street without any questions asked and take on the highest office in the United States? So what makes all of you think that everyone in the US shares your views of how high and mighty this guy is. Sorry but a few of us, at least half the Country take this role a littel more seriously and its NOT going to be given to just anyone. Kris its because Palin is not the holier than thou Hillary Clinton! As far as I am concerned Hillary lost alot of my respect (Yes I am a Republican) but she lost my respect when she took everything she stood for on what could be classified as a fierce battle to become the Democratic nominee and than basically said oh i was just kidding Obama is the one I back him 100%! I felt Hillary cared about this Country at least up until she endorsed Obama for the sake of the “TICKET”. I mean really people back your candidate because you share the same ideology and the same views. Back your candidate because you trust him to act on your behalf (For the people and by the people!) But people don’t back him simply because he is black or because he comes across with vitality. Where is that vitality when it comes to a time of crisis? Vitality means nothing. Its the actions. Its the reponse to the crisis. I do believe John McCain loves this Country more than anything and if for nothing else that ONE Quality takes presidence over a great speech and charisma! Charisma equals BS artist as far as I am concerned.

I am not surprise that people are fed up with our government and the media has their own agenda. What are the democratic ideas.Beside taking more money from everybody and socialize
large part of our economy there is no agenda. After another 8 years in power I am sure that the republicans will be back to sort out all screw ups.I have one advice for obama.Redistribute the brain, but he knows wery well that it would be the end of democratic party.

Comment by Charlie

McCain would be more accurate to compare Obama to Jimmy Carter (whom I actually voted for as a 20 something democrat). Biden could laugh that one off too, but, assuming Obama is elected, no one will be laughing at that comparison in a couple of years when economic conditions are looking a lot like they were in the late 70’s. Unlike some of these “kids” (today’s 20 something democrats) whose comments are more attack than substance, I actually lived through and managed to survive those times, even attempting to buy a home then. But with double digit inflation and interest rates in the mid teens, I couldn’t come close…unlike the past few years when, thanks to organizations like ACORN, anyone could buy a house whether they could afford it or not. Yes, get ready for the “wonderful” Carter years again and God help us all!

The Vice President is the PRESIDENT of the SENATE. Why was what Sarah Palin said overstating? While it is true that most modern administration appoint a Senator to perform this role (President Pro Tempore), the Vice-President still has this power. He can’t vote unless it’s a tie of course, but otherwise the Senate President’s role is similar to that of Speaker of the House. Apparently political reporters aren’t required to study the constitution. The actual verbage is below. Feel free to look it up.

Excerpt from Article 1 Section 3
The Vice President of the United States shall be President of the Senate but shall have no Vote, unless they be equally divided.

The Senate shall choose their other Officers, and also a President pro tempore, in the Absence of the Vice President, or when he shall exercise the Office of President of the United States.

Where IS Dick Cheney these days - anyone know??? He hasn’t been seen since before the Republican convention (which the Republicans wouldn’t allow him to attend.) Is Cheney hidden away in some underground bunker somewhere? Maybe the McCain campaign people stuck him there and locked him in so he couldn’t make any appearances and remind people just how bad the Bush-Cheney administration is. After all, McCain has to run as far away from Bush-Cheney as possible to have any hope of winning….

Why did Obama and Biden attack Joe the Plumber? Biden looks and sounds increasingly desparate, tired, beaten, capricious, irresolute, conflicted, lost,,, not ready for America

To Jay Germaine:

Dick Cheney is a 100% stand up guy? Except for the fact that nobody has seen him in a year, his number two is in jail and Bush admitted to Bob Woodward that Cheney and others made a lot of the decisions about Iraq without consulting him. Also, to the other (or same) Jay that said Palin is not overstating the role of the VP. If you read what you posted from the Constitution, it does not say that the VP runs the Senate. In fact, it says that they only get a vote if there is a tie. The VP is not like the Speaker of the House in any way. First of all the Speaker always has a vote and decides on the agenda of the House. The VP does neither of those. If political reporters need to study the Constitution, you need to study the history of our government and the history of the role of the VP in it. I’m sorry the Fox News has you all brainwashed. Palin is really stupid. No way this gets posted.

One of those “liberals” (I prefer progressive)

You pose this as a bad thing?! As it would seem that he is neither an air head that is afraid to sit down and have an open discussion with the press over his policies. Add to that he understands the true roll of the vice president and the difference between the legislative branch and executive branch of our government, and constitutionally identified duties of the vice-president, I really don’t think the comparison is favorable to the republican camp. OOPS! I’ve stated this on the republican puppet site. Sorry folks, just thoughts for those who are prepared to understand how the government is supposed to work, not how its worked over the last 7 years of the Bush dictatorship…

We as Americans need to improve ourselves for our own good.

Just look at the facts. McCain has more experience and guts and a take control attitude. Obama has very little experience and doesn’t issue any statements until he checks with his advisors.
Biden has many years of experience in the Senate but has never run anything on his own, not even this campaign. Palin worked her way up from city council to Governor of Alaska. She has made many decisions regarding her state. If you want to talk experience it’s the McCain/Palin ticket.

McCain-Palin seem not only desperate but ridiculous. As an Independent I’ve tried to be and advocated being objective and rational while, as we all realize, there is simply a lot of pressure to keep us from doing either. It would be easy to say that we can’t trust anything said but then how could we ever measure. Today all of the candidates, including John McCain, find fault with the Bush-Cheney administration and strongly advocate that real change is absolutely needed, so it could be as simple as determining who to believe? By anyone’s measure Sarah Palin is different, short on qualifications and extremely bold for sure, yet many feel she is impressive and then Senator Obama doesn’t have real extensive qualifications either and presents, impressively but none the less, a bold approach. McCain accuses Obama of flip-flopping yet anyone would have to be blind not to recognize that McCain has literally been all over the place. Obama is attacked for all kinds of irrational, far fetched, off the point things but that seems to say more against the critics than against Obama. McCain and Bidden both have long running experience but nothing that impresses as being with commanding control or to the point of instilling complete confidence. We could just identify with the political parties but then that leaves us divided between conservative and liberal, between more of the same or change, concentration on Special Interests and a select few or on everyday concerns and there really is no end to those emotional debates. It goes on but the result is simply the same as there is little reality to base a rational and objective decision on, no real help to be counted on as being honestly complete and yet the problems today are drastic and our needs are formidable. For me it comes down to simply accepting some of what the candidates say, finding a consistency I can identify with, and then on seeing it supported in their history and in logical probability. In my thinking, John McCain has a history of doing whatever works best for him politically, including strongly supporting the Bush-Cheney policies and only now, at the last minute when desperate, faulting those same policies and advocating change. Sarah Palin’s bold, aggressive, self-focused personality (to even using her baby as a prop) disgusts me and is as if she would be a real problem if in any higher office (it could be said she already has been a problem in her current office). Joe Bidden seems to be very qualified and as if he would be a real asset to the president and to the country as vice-president. Barack Obama’s history and current presentation seems very consistent in offering a thoughtful, rational and conscientious approach to everything, including being able to solicit cooperation and provide direction in getting things done and to honestly benefit everyone. Rationally and objectively, to me, the decision seems to be logically sound for Obama-Bidden.

Remeber the last time Democrats had the White House Yes! Bill Clinton spent more time
defending himself in the Pointing finger “I DID NOT HAVE SEX WITH THAT WOMEN” With
President Bush we didn’t have to worry about him chasing the INTERNS around. He was busy

that and I don’t respect someone who votes! present 196 times(NOBAMA) Gee! Give me the job I can manage that.
Final note: If the President of the United States of America was chasing MY INTERN DAUGHTER AROUND THE WHITE HOUSE, I DON’T THINK HE WOULD OF LASTED IS FULL TERM! I read a book by Gerald Ford, at the time ,Clinton had called him begging him to help against is impeachment. WE FORGET SO EASILY DON’T WE.
Moral of the story. The Liberals like a talker not a doer (ONE WHO ACTS!)

The top 25% of income earners (68%) pay 86% of all taxes. Thirdly, I do not know how a
