RNC Spent 150K on Palin Family Wardrobe, Accessories

AP Photo

AP Photo

Broken by the Politico: According to financial disclosure forms, the Republican National Committee has spent a staggering $150,000 for wardrobe, and accessories for the Palin family since her selection as John McCain’s running mate. The costs include bills from Saks Fifth Avenue for almost $50,000, $75,000 at Neiman Marcus, and about $5,000 in hair and makeup.

The Palin family will not keep the clothes,however, as they will go to a “charitable purpose after the campaign”, according to a release by the McCain-Palin campaign.

“With all of the important issues facing the country right now, it’s remarkable that we’re spending time talking about pantsuits and blouses. It was always the intent that the clothing go to a charitable purpose after the campaign.” –McCain-Palin spokesperson Tracey Schmitt

If the media was fair and balanced, you would hear about:

- Obama’s actual connection to Ayers and his 3 different stories on that connection
- Obama’s connection to Tony Rezco
- Obama’s connection and relationship with Father Phleager and Rev Wrigtht (Black Liberation Theology)
- Obama’s early involvement with the New Party
- The fact that there are at least two lawsuits against Obama to provide his actual birth certificate (I personally
think he probably is natural born, but the news media has not reported the fact that there are lawsuits-not
even Fox…If there was a lawsuit filed against McCain for whatever cause it would be all over the media)
- His corrupt association and funding of ACORN
- Obama has benifitted by the meltdown of the financial networks–if the media would report the rout cause of
this which Obama and his party have their fingerprints all over this–then Obama should have slid in the polls
- His utter lack of any notable accomplishment as a state and US Senator
- His lying on his record of abortion and his many, many policy reversals from the primary to the general
election

I cannot believe that America is about to elect this person. I believe with every ounce of my being that if even half of the dirt on Obama were to be reported this would be a landslide!!!

Comment by Jason from Missouri

This is a non-story. Every campaign has to do what it can to make their candidate presentable. I felt the same way about John Edwards $200 haircut, and just about all of these other waste-of-time factoids that have nothing to do with the huge problems we’re facing.

Comment by Dee B.

Now, that’s funny, Jerrie.

Because it’s illegal, that’s why.

How many ‘Joe Six Packs’ spend $75,000 at Neiman Marcus and $50,000 at Saks?

Can you say ‘hypocrite’?

She did have to pack up quickly and leave her home with her family in order to be a candidate. I’m sure there was no time to go shopping at that point. Has the DNC or Obama released how much has been spent on his family to this point? Clothes, meals, hair, housing? After all, he’s been running for a year and a half. Who’s been paying for that?

Why doesn’t politico break a story about Mr. and Mrs. Obama’s wardrobe. You think they are wearing clothes from JC Penny’s!! The media is disgracefully one-sided in this whole thing. It is terrible. Just a reminder that this is not Sarah Palin’s money it is from the RNC.

So hypocritical

““With all of the important issues facing the country right now, it’s remarkable that we’re spending time talking about pantsuits and blouses. It was always the intent that the clothing go to a charitable purpose after the campaign.” –McCain-Palin spokesperson Tracey Schmitt”

It was fine to talk and blemish John Edward for $400 haircut but not what money Sarah Palin spent and then pretending to be an average person.

And there is nothing is wrong with buying her and the family some decent clothes to wear….but the hypocritical nature of this is very disturbing.

Comment by DC

I highly doubt that Mrs. Palin did the shopping at these particular stores - when would she have had the time?

Comment by Deidre

So, lets get this straight.

If she went out in Wal-Mart clothing to a rally, the press would report how horrible and white trash she looked, but it would be ok? So that headline would read: Palin Style Needs Overhaul

She spends money to look presentable enough for a media that picks apart every aspect of the woman, puts her on Newsweek un-airbrushed, while shining a halo on Obama’s cover photo, and she is now being called out for spending money on hair and makeup? Have you people ever met a woman who DIDN’T spend money on her clothing, hair and makeup?

Are you people kidding???????? How about you report on Michelle Obama’s wardrobe? Or better yet, go back to journalism school and learn the meaning of unbiased reporting.

Comment by Marilyn

Don’t you guys have anything more important to do than slam Palin every day?? Biden gets away with so many DUMB things out of his mouth, yet you are ready to hit on Palin for CLOTHES?? Give me a break! I am voting McCain/Palin and can’t wait to cast my vote!
Media is so danged left, I don’t even read you guys anymore! I have had it!

Comment by Dale Clark

It’s a little bit hypocritical for Sarah Palin calling others elitist and then going on a $150,000.00 spending spree for clothing. How much is your average clothing budget?

Sarah also recentlty called the VP the person “in charge” of the senate who will really get things done. Perhaps she doesn’t recall the constitution on this issue but the only power the VP really has is in breaking tie votes. They could lobby senators like any other citizen but couldn’t set agendas, write legislation, serve or vote in important committees or participate in any other law making business. She really doesn’t understand the limits of her prospective position and is not ready to lead.

Does anyone feel the NEED to shout out to the American Public the REAL difference between McCain and Obama’s tax plans? MCains is a long term growth PLAN! To create jobs and expand our economy where Obamas is a SHORT TERM PLAN that will only put money in the pockets of Americans for a moment but RAISE the deficiet incrediably! I AM a single mom who makes 46000 a year and would love a few extra bucks in my pocket from the Obama plan, BUT, even i can see the LONG TERM plan is better than Obamas short term plan! Someone needs to shout this from the rooftops! And shouldn’t the fact that our country’s saftey should be a priority over the economy? Shouldn’t we be aware of the fact that MCAIN is the one for THAT job. Have we all forgotten about 9/11? What if it happened again next month? Then what would people be worrying about? Economy or our SAFTEY?????

Obama’s connection to Tony Rezco- Like buying land then selling it to Obama
At least in Alaska Lisa Murkowski gave her land back because it was UNETHICAL!!!!!!!!!

Comment by Sean the thinker

This is another example of how the Republicans are in denial mode. I, personally, am supporting Barack Obama, but I have no problem admiting when he is wrong on an issue or incident. I prefer to use a common sense approach to choosing a candidate of choice. I agreed with my Republican counterparts about Obama’s association with Ayers, and his membership in Wright’s church. However, I have disagree with the merits of those incidents…..Many Republicans however, refuse to even acknowledge when their candidate or VP candidate has done something that might be deemed inappropriate. This is disingenuous on their part because it exposes a level of hypocrisy in their line of reasoning……….Think about it—–I welcome any responses.

Comment by Garrett

Want to talk about a lot of money? How about the 2.8 million dollars the Obama campaign has spent in my state of Florida in the last 30 days! Compare that to the 345 thousand that McCain has. If Mr. Obama is so concerned with the people of this country why doesn’t he take that money and pay off some mortgages or use it towards all of his policy that is going to cost the American tax payer an average of 20% more in the year 2009. How can anyone want to vote for Obama and his terrible policy to want and stop the white collar worker from gaining success. You work for the government Mr. Obama not the other way around! I like having the same tax rate as everyone else regardless if I went to school and have been successful in my life. Don’t punish me and countless others for being successful and taking the advantage of the same opportunities we all have as Americans. McCain/Palin 08!

Comment by Dee B.

What Barack and Michelle Obama spend on clothes is irrelevant, since they use their own personal funds.

This money was from the campaign, which is illegal according to campaign finance laws. Why do you think the RNC says they are going to donate it to charity?

How, though, they are going to donate $4,700 worth of hair and make up to charity is anybody’s guess.

I AM UPSET OVER THIS BECAUSE IT IS MONEY FROM CONTRIBUTIONS I HAVE GIVEN TO HELP THE CAMPAIGN…SHE DIDN’T SPEND HER OWN MONEY!!!! WHO CARES ABOUT OBAMA, HE PROBABLY SPENT HIS OWN MONEY. SHE NEEDS TO REFUND ALL THE CONTRIBUTERS BACK JUST LIKE SHE NEEDS TO PAY BACK THE ALASKAN TAXPAYERS FOR HER KIDS TO FLY AND STAY AT EVENTS WITH HER. I AM DISAPPOINTED WITH HER PICK AS VP ANYWAYS…JUST BECAUSE SHE IS A WOMAN…WHO CARES…I AM STAYING HOME FROM VOTING THIS ELECTION!!!!

If Fox reported on Michelle Obama’s wardrobe it would just be another puff piece. Michelle O. makes a point of wearing non-designer clothes and paying for them herself.

It’s better to just drop this whole subject, which is irrelevant in the face of the world’s problems. Why should anyone care about a candidate’s wardrobe in a time like this?

Comment by Trent

It wouldn’t be a story if Palin didn’t present herself as an “average” hockey mom and constantly claim that people from big cities were elites and not real Americans.

I frankly find if offensive that the guy that the guy who didn’t know how many houses he owns and a woman with a 150K wardrobe continue to try and label Obama as an elitist and out of touch.

Do they want Governor Palin to wear her jogging suit?? Give me a break. Why aren’t they questioning biden or Obama’s Armani suits? They clothes are going to be donated to charity as they were in the Geralding Ferraro Campaign in 1984. What about Michelle Obama’s $1500.00 pair of shoes or her $3000.00 suit??
The mainstream media should be reporting on Bill Ayers and all the illegal money flowing into the appeaser’s campaign

How much money is illegal flowing into his campaign? ACORN fraud is happening. Can we even get a fair election. The democrats and mainstream media are evil.

Articles like these are transparent attempts by the democrat socialist media to distract Americans away from real issues like: Why did Obama and Biden attack Joe the Plumber? Why do Obama and Biden want to DOUBLE foreign aid payments? Who are Obama and Biden trying to buy with American tax dollar giveaways????

Interesting - Since Mccain is taking public financing - de Facto we the public are paying for her attire. And then you talk about fisical responsibility.

Does they have to file all the expenses to IRS/Election commission?? Just revealing!!!

Comment by Sammy

I think the real point regarding the interest in the story about any candidate spending 150 THOUSAND DOLLARS in 7 weeks for clothing PLUS another 13,000 or so in Make UP is that McCain has been running on fiscal responsibility, low taxes for the wealthy and Joe Six Pack and Joe the Plumber. It just looks so bad at this time, with this economy, these wars, our country TRILLIONS in debt and growing ……I mean…..Im just sayin’.

Who cares how much they spent on Sarah Palin’s wardrobe. I never heard once during the primaries how much the DNC spent on Hillary’s pant suits ans acessories. Please tell me the campaigns don’t spend money on suits for Obama, Mccain and Biden too. Who is paying for Michelle Obama’s wardrobe? Once again more petty nonsense during such an important election.

Comment by Theresa

Actually proves Sarah’s family is a normal family, how many of us would have the wardrobe to go out on the campaign trail? Sunday best only goes so far. The party spent the money not the candidate and sadly we are all judged by small minded people by what we are wearing. I agree it’s sad to spend so much on clothes but I also agree this isn’t a story it’s just one more swipe!

Comment by Pam

I remember that Jackie Kennedy got her clothes at like 25% of retail, Nancy Reagan got a deal also, neither of these women had the $ for the designers they graved while their husbands were in office or before - and those places were glad to have these style setters wear their clothes.

As for this GOP deal, well outfitting the whole family seems a bit much. But as to Palin, she did need a few nice duds, but for heaven’s sake, what is the GOP thinking ? Couldn’t some of these rich rich people like Cindy McCain given this woman the maximum annual gift of $12,000 and been so low class - or high class- to ask for a discount at Saks ? Leave the poor contributors out of this- they weren’t paying for Palin’s clothes- so she can auction them on ebay after the event!

I have a number of hard republican friends - we all agree the GOP has run one poorly organized - horrible campaign - this is just another sympton of not getting your act together

She couldn’t get a decent wardrobe for $50,000 or $75,000???

This is wasteful and they should be ashamed. Especially since they are taking public funds for their campaign.

So much for cutting waste.

Comment by beveryafraid

So what? Obama has spent $500,000,000 on this ridiculous campaign. Good grief, he has his own cable channel! You don’t hear anything about him spreading that money around, and you certainly won’t hear about him giving anything back, except maybe the greek temple, but that was a rental. This isn’t even a story.

Comment by RC

Why is it a story??? one word H-Y-P-O-C-R-I-S-Y

Everything Palin/McCain say is the opposite of what they do.

Comment by beveryafraid

By the way, the key to this whole so called story is “disclosure”, which at least you have with McCain/Palin. Good luck finding any type of disclosure on the other side. His whole past was written in disappearing ink.

Comment by Tim

Point 1: Michelle Obama pays for her clothes using her own money, or the clothes are loaned to her. She does not use campaign money for them.

Point 2: John Edwards is not running for president. When he was in the primaries, he paid for his own haircuts with his personal account. (Apparently you forgot this fact from when the story aired a long time ago.)

Point 3: $150,000 for clothes is a HUGE amount of money folks! How many of YOU spend that much on clothes within 3 months???

Comment by Angie M.

The fact that the McCain campaign disclosed the $150,000 spent on clothing items, etc. tells me that they were not trying to hide anything.

I agree with some of the comments - this is a non-issue. Was it a slow news day?

Comment by Military Family For Truth

I’m an Obama supporter but I don’t think there is anything wrong with buying the Palin family some appropriate clothes for campaigning. I think the cost is surprising and it may turn some middle-class Americans off but in the big scheme of things this is really a non issue. I honestly think that women have a harder time on the trail than men. We men can wear the same suit every day with a different tie and no one would notice but unfortuately women have to be fresh and different everday. Just an observation.

Comment by Melvin

Most of you have double standards. First to all the people asking about Obama association with Ayers and Acorn he has explain it several times including in the last Presidential Debate. Obama was on the same education boards that was created by a ex-Reagan Republican. Tell me, do you honestly know the past backgrounds of the people you work with? Most of you don’t know the past background of the people you are married to.

Palin and McCain are running a Joe the plummer campaign. Pretending to be the average Joe. Palin is the one mentioning maverick 27 times in her speaches. So to go and spend $150,000.00 on clothes; should could have said thanks but no thanks. That is what makes this all wrong. So McCain supporters speak as you may, but this is a double standard, your average Joe can’t do this.. We don’t needed her to insult the world like she is a average hockey Mom. I want to know how many hockey mom can spend $150,000.00 on clothes for three months? Most hockey moms I know families are suffering from high unemployment rates and one dollar away from losing everything they work for.

Comment by Rick

Here is the problem with this, that people don’t seem to realize. This is CAMPAIGN money that people have donated to help her get elected. If this was HER OWN money, then I would not begrudge her a bit. It’s her money, let her spend it as she will. Like Edwards did for his haicut. Like Michelle and Barrack do for their clothes. That is not the case here. This is CAMPAIGN money. That is what makes this so disturbing.

Comment by Debra

I did not donate to the McCain campaign in order to dress Palin. Maybe she should have just gone through Cindy McCain’s closet.

Comment by Ann

You’re right, we should not be talking about how much the RNC spends on her wardrobe.

We should talk about why she was unable to correctly describe the role of a VP.

Again, it’s not her lack of experience, it’s her lack of knowledge that raises questions.

Let’s compare - look at these two segments:

Obama Resoles His Shoes While Palin Spends $150K

by enamore22

Wed Oct 22, 2008 at 09:44:30 AM EDT

While Politico reports on the RNC spending $150,000 to ‘accessorize’ Palin and her family, I stumbled upon this picture of Senator Obama (along with a great collection of campaign trail photos from Callie Shell).

He’s got holes in the bottom of both his shoes from walking so much on the campaign trail. And as the caption explains, he’s already resoled them once.

“Senator Obama was doing press interviews by telephone in a holding room between events. Sometime later as he was getting ready to begin his event, he asked me if I was photographing his shoes. When I said yes, he told me that he had already had them resoled once since he entered the race a year earlier. Providence, R.I., 3/1/2008.”

So… who’s more in touch with the average American again?

~~~~~~~~~~
And then there is this:
Wait until you see one of the expensive clothing items she purchased on the taxpayer’s dime… on that $175,000 shopping trip.
A trip to Sak’s Fifth Avenue: $49,425.74
A shopping spree at Neiman Marcus: $75,062.63
Hair and makeup: $4,716.49
Wearing THIS silk scarf in public (With the word “VOTE” on it… and the Democratic logo): PRICELESS!!
You just can’t make this stuff up!!
You see her silk scarf - she’s telling you to vote for the Democrat!!
Comment by Irena
Sarah, you owe the Alaskan people a refund. You squandered taxpayer money by treating your children to expensive vacations while many of the Alaskan people would not be able to afford to send themselves and their own children on vacations. This is the exactly the kind of fiscal responsibility and financial oversight we need.
Does anyone want to talk about socialism and redistribution of wealth? How about the great state of Alaska as the largest socialist state in our great nation.
First, there is the Alaska Permanent Fund Dividend based on the state’s oil revenues. Every eligible Alaskan receives a payment regardless of age or income. This year the state will pay each resident of Alaska $3,269. https://www.pfd.state.ak.us
Second, there is the fact that Alaska is the number one state for federal spending per capita. As of 2005, the Federal government gave the state of Alaska $13,788 for each of its resident.
http://www.nemw.org/fundsrank.htm
Not bad for a state that is the third (or fourth, depending on your source) least populous state in the Union.
As far as Mrs. Palin referring to Mr. Obama as a socialist who wants to redistribute wealth to the poor constituents, well, it takes one to know one.
Comment by Joe (Not the Plumber)
Can somebody let me know in which Salvation Army store they plan to dump these duds?
Comment by bessy
It is a story because no one else is using campaign funds for these expenses, and even if the clothes are to be donated to charity, Palin needs to step up and state that she WILL pay taxes on them as required. Then this story will be put to rest.
Where her stylists shopped, how she looks, etc… is just chatter.
Comment by Texas Tex
Don’t you find it disconcerting that the RNC has put that much money into Palin’s wardrobe when Republican congressional candidates are fighting tooth-and-nail to win their elections? Where is the money better spent?
Comment by Palin 2012
Mark Harris , if you had followed the primaries you would have known… you are beating on a dead horse, America is worried about the economy and the war in Iraq… worried about jobs and housing.
Comment by Greg
I don’t get why so many of these comments are complaining about “biased reporting.” The whole reason why it’s news is because of how much Palin stressed the fact she’s just like any other Joe Sixpack out there, and the contradiction damages her credibility. When Edwards tried to be the spokesman of the poor at the time he got the $400 haircut, he also got slammed by the media.
Besides, if you really think this is biased reporting then you should also blame FOX news, because they’ve just perpetuated the echo chamber.
Comment by Palin 2012
Think they would have been better of giving her some of Cindy’s clothes, less expensive to too..
Comment by Sandy
Much has been written about Michelle Obama’s wardrobe, her dresses are off the rack and cost under $200. Mr. Obama wears old shoes and clothes, even when urged to “update” his attire.
You can buy some of the dresses Michelle has worn here: http://www.whitehouseblackmarket.com/store/home.jsp?&sourceID=WHBM_msn_brand
Comment by Jack B
When the Democratic Party is bringing in record breaking donations from over 11,000,000 Americans, Republicans claim Democrats are trying to buy the election. When the GOP spends $150,000 of campaign funds on designer clothes, there’s nothing wrong.
Comment by Palin 2012
Jerrie Williams, nothing, but they could have done that at walmart, if they were average joes or for America..
Comment by palinfan
So what? She needs to keep up her average-joe babeness for the joe 12-packs and the joe the wife beaters and the joe the plumbers and the joe the perverts whom she is counting on to vote for her. So what’s a few hundred thousand for a few dresses and botox?
Comment by John
I would think there could be a nice middle ground between a $20 Walmart dress and a $75,000 Neiman Marcus spree. But really, the attacks on Edwards’ $400 “Breck Girl” haircut kinda set the tone for the present kerfuffle. Give some, get some. Stop being crybabies about it.
Michelle Obama shops at Target
Sarah Palin spends $150,000 at Saks and Neiman Marcus.
Who’s the fiscal conservative now?
This is the Republican version of wealth distribution. Take from the little people who donate and consolidate at the top. Wake up people.
There’s nothing conservative about the Republican party’s ideas concerning money.
The last eight years have seen spending and growth of government that were previously unimaginable. If you are truly, truly a fiscal conservative, please take a look at the policies of this new brand of Republican party and think about whether or not it really gels with your own ideas.
Remember, devaluation of the dollar and inflation are both forms of invisible taxation. Using that criteria, George Bush and those who would follow his policies have taxed the American people far more than anything Obama would propose.
I’m sorry, but that is completely undefensible. You spend a few hundred dollars to look presentable. You spend 150 thousand dollars and it is more evidence that you are completely out of touch with the value system that makes our country great. That is more money than most of us will make in a year.
Especially in this day and age when we are fighting to keep our jobs and losing money every day in our 401K.
Disgusting.
If I gave money to the Republican Party and they spend it on this I would be outraged.
The Palin family will not keep the clothes,however, as they will go to a “charitable purpose after the campaign”, according to a release by the McCain-Palin campaign.
NO STORY.
I’m going to encourage my Republican friends to contribute the McCain-Palin campaign. I know that their money will be used wisely.
Oh, and doesn’t the youngest daughter look just precious with that Louis Vuitton bag. Makes me want to go and lick a baby’s head!
Her clothes are all that anyway. I think you could buy those suits from Burlington Coat factory anyday…isn’t she the hockey mom? Joe six-pack? Joe-thePlumber’s best buddy? why is she shopping in “elite” boutiques?
I could pay my house off with 150k. and besides she would be showing me that she would be able to balance the budget better if she shopped at JC Penneys. And by the way I haven’t been able to buy clothes for myself for over 20 yrs. thankyou
“Why doesn’t politico break a story about Mr. and Mrs. Obama’s wardrobe. You think they are wearing clothes from JC Penny’s!! The media is disgracefully one-sided in this whole thing. It is terrible. Just a reminder that this is not Sarah Palin’s money it is from the RNC.”
“Has the DNC or Obama released how much has been spent on his family to this point? Clothes, meals, hair, housing? After all, he’s been running for a year and a half. Who’s been paying for that?”
Here’s your answer, from Politico’s report, which both of you apparently did not read:
“A review of similar records for the campaign of Democrat Barack Obama and the Democratic National Committee turned up no similar spending.”
We are doomed. If the RNC is so stupid to undersestimate the reprecussions of spending $150,000 in designer clothes for the Palins , in the middle of a economic recession, than all is lost. And anyone who tries to minimize this blunder is drinking the Kool Aid.
Some Republicans are able to make grow all their life this special ability that is self-deception, could be funny if it was not pathetic…
