McCain edging toward labeling Obama a “socialist”

CONCORD, NC — As the debate over tax policy takes center stage in the closing days of the election, John McCain is getting closer and closer to explicitly calling his Democratic rival a “socialist.”

McCain invoked the word twice during his weekly radio address this morning and is repeatedly referring to Barack Obama’s tax plan as “welfare” and a “government giveaway” on the campaign trail.

“(Obama) believes in redistributing wealth, not in policies that help us all make more of it. Joe (’the plumber’ Wurzelbacher), in his plainspoken way, said this sounded a lot like socialism. And a lot of Americans are thinking along those same lines,” McCain said in his weekly radio address Saturday. “At least in Europe, the socialist leaders who so admire my opponent are upfront about their objectives. They use real numbers and honest language. And we should demand equal candor from Senator Obama. Raising taxes on some in order to give checks to others is not a tax cut it’s just another government giveaway.”

At a rally today in the Tar Heel state, McCain did not repeat the word but continued the assault on the Obama tax plan and the Democrat’s pledge to provide tax cuts for 95% of Americans–noting that a good portion of Americans don’t pay income taxes.

“How do you cut income taxes for 95 percent of Americans, when more than 40 percent pay no income taxes right now? How do you reduce, how do you reduce, how do you reduce the number zero?,” McCain asked at his rally in suburban Charlotte in front of more than 2,000 supporters. “Well, that’s the key to Barack Obama’s whole plan: Since you can’t reduce taxes on those who pay zero, the government will write them all checks called a tax credit.”

He added that Obama promises “phony tax cuts” as opposed to “policies that grow our economy and create jobs and opportunities for all Americans.”

Sarah Palin has also adopted the new talking points on the campaign trail in recent days by also using Wurzelbacher’s quote to invoke the word “socialism.”

McCain has frequently mentioned National Journal magazine’s calculation that Obama has the most liberal voting record in the US Senate and referred to his rival’s “extreme voting record,” but he has been reluctant thus far to accuse Obama of following Marxist principles.

Asked during an interview with the Kansas City Star in July, McCain did not shoot down the accusation.

“His voting record … is more to the left than the announced socialist in the United States Senate, Bernie Sanders of Vermont,” McCain told the paper.

But when asked if Obama is a socialist, McCain answered, “I don’t know. All I know is his voting record, and that’s what people usually judge their elected representatives by.”

For his part, Obama said today that he is shocked that McCain was attacking his basic defense of the progressive income tax system (higher taxes as incomes go up) and assistance for low-income Americans.

“John McCain is so out of touch with the struggles you are facing that he must be the first politician in history to call a tax cut for working people ‘welfare,’” Obama told his St. Louis rally today. “The only ‘welfare’ in this campaign is John McCain’s plan to give another $200 billion in tax cuts to the wealthiest corporations in America — including $4 billion in tax breaks for big oil companies that ran up record profits under George Bush.

Obama’s campaign also notes that despite labeling Obama’s tax credits as handouts, McCain offers his own $5,000 tax credit for health care.

The real truth that the main stream media doesn’t want you to know about Gov Palin;
“Palin Helps Alaska Get Rich Off Oil While the Rest of the Country Suffers”

“Welcome to the People’s Republic of Alaska, where every resident this year will get a $3,200 payout(per person), thanks in no small measure to the efforts of Sarah Palin, the state’s Republican governor. That’s $22,400 for a family of seven, like Palin’s.
No wonder she is popular with voters in a state whose residents pay no income or sales taxes but are blessed with state coffers rolling in cash at a time when all other states are suffering.”

Everything Obama says is a distortion, the theme of his campaign. He is an outright socialist
trying to disguise it by changing the subject every time he is asked. I am a small business
owner and I want none of my money going to those who don’t work.
If a democrat gets into office there will be NO checks and balances to keep congress in line—so they will spend, spend, spend digging the hole deeper until we are in a depression within 2 years–
that’s a FACT! I know many of you just want a black president, but please don’t elect this
black man—he is corrupt. Wait for the next honest black man with integrity who is not an ad agency manufactured puff piece with absolutely no substance. He just wants to see his name in lights along with the Hollywood crowd—can’t you all see this???

Great, let’s resurrect McCarthyism and, while we are at it let’s also resurrect the sentiments of George Wallace with some “scary black man” remarks. We can add a whole new twist, now that we’ve all lived through 9/11, let’s equate our rival to terrorism. The McCain campaign and the RNC have managed to combine the most vile sentiments of McCarthy and Wallace into divisive rhetoric goes lower than any other in American history. They have defined a new bottom in politics that will, in future, be described as McCainism, Palinism or maybe McPalinism. Let’s just hope that this is the LAST time that a new divisive term is defined by a political campaign, AND that this kind of thinking NEVER assumes power and control of ANY country, especially the USA. The first word of our country is UNITED.

I can’t believe there is not a soul out there that hasn’t seen this pattern in Obama’ rehetoric yet!
He speaks of taxing the big companies at a higher rate. H E L L O…. many people own the oil companies through stock investments. He’s still taxing us! Sarah Palin has in the past been able to get these so called companies to give back a share of their profits in the state of Alaska. Why is everyone in this country so clueless? They can’t see through the fluff..

It is so obvious that Obama is a socialist - and much of the news media ignores or refuses to admit the real Obama policies.

Comment by ladyliberty1776

Uhh…

Isn’t McCain’s mortgage solution also socialist??? In debate # 2 McCain said as president he would use taxpayer money to buy up the nation’s bad mortgages, thereby using the government to purchase people’s homes for them. That is also socialist.

Wake up, GOPers! Our country has always been a blend between capitalism and socialism. This is not new. And socialistic parts of our government have always been supported by both Democrats and Republicans.

Get a clue and let’s get on with our lives.

McCain and Bush became socialists when they took over US banks and AIG. McCain reduced politics to McCarthyism when he sent Palin out to talk with no adult guidance.

President Bush has agreed to play host to a summit of world leaders soon to discuss the global response to the financial crisis, a senior White House official said today.

The fact is that socialism is alive and well, all over the globe.
The only thing left of the real US, is the name.

Get a grip people, who think you still have a monopoly on power, faith, and the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness (as long as the recepient is someone you approve of, of course). Those days are over! The EU gave our president an ulltimatum to hold the above mentioned summit, immediately; although it was “not a top priority” according to a Bush spokesperson. The fact is the summit is in session as we speak.

Perhaps John McCain knows how uninformed the American people are in their hypnotic complacency; so satisfied with business as usual; pull the lever straight down. Perhaps he can continue to handfeed them with swill, because he knows that many have opened their mouths up very wide to receive whatever he dumps down their throats. Yum, yum, yum, how they like it.

Yes, I can confirm Obama is socialist. I am french, love America and currently reside in the U.S
My country has been a socialist country for 14 years (1981-1995). As a result, the economy is down, wealthy people are still wealthy, middle class became poorer, poor people are still poor.
Despite of a lot of taxes ( small businesses) for the national health plan coverage, everybody has to buy a private health insurance because social security ( health plan coverage) is in deficit and cannot pay anymore. Nothing great about socialism.

If John McCain wants to start a McCarthy-style socialist witch hunt he doesn’t have to look any farther than his old pal George W. Bush and Bush’s Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, architects of the biggest government push into private business in world history. So much for market capitalism and small government — when Wall Street comes crying Bush and his pinko cronies are all too willing to lend a hand, with our money and our children’s too!

Democrats may tax and spend, but Republicans just spend and spend and spend!

I would like to ask the American people if there are any other of us that feel the same way I do? To me the most important issue at hand is the safety of our nation. I wonder if any of the economic failure in this country has been caused by an infiltration of the same enemy that wants to destroy our country. If you remember the people who flew the planes into the trade centers had infiltrated our system. I wonder how many more there are. Maybe our neighbor? Call me crazy but I don’t trust Barak Obama with our countries safety. Do we really know who he is?
Our children hang in the balance AMERICA. We can either choose a blessing or a curse. Deuteronomy 11:26-28. I believe it’s a sad day when we are voting our wallets. What good is it if a man gains the whole world and loses his own soul. Matthew 16:26
My prayer is for God to open the eyes of the American people and unite us in the Spirit of God for which our nation was founded on. I believe our forefathers would be ashamed of the attitudes that are being displayed. It is disgracful.
Father forgive us, for we have sinned. Have mercy on us all.

Here’s the name for it: “Trickle-Down Socialism”.

So for now, Obama has decided that people making $250K make too much and their money has to be “spread around” to those making less. Biden says this is “Patriotic”. But what will be the next income level that the gov’t decides is too much? $150K? $100K?

Let’s see, millionaires make a whole lot more than $250K so the gov’t should take some of the millionaires’ money and give it to the people making $250K. And billionaires make a whole lot more than millionaires so the gov’t should give some of the billionaires’ money to the millionaires. And a person, oh, like a plumber (who doesn’t own his own company and doesn’t have any employees because if he did he’d probably be making $250K), who makes $75K is rich compared to someone struggling on welfare so the gov’t should take some of the $75K money and pass it down as well.

Besides the “common good” types of responsibilities the gov’t has (national security, military, infrastructure, energy, etc) it also has a responsibility to help people help themselves through education and job training programs, food programs, making sure people have heat in the winter time and so forth. It is NOT the gov’t’s responsibility to take one citizen’s money and give it to another as a hand out. Especially when the receiving citizen is paying little or no taxes to begin with!

How many people are small businesses that GROSS under 250K a year hiring? None!

How many new jobs are created by small businesses that GROSS over 250K? Allmost ALL of them!

McCain wants to give everyone a tax credit of 5,000 dollars for insurance.
McCain wants to buy up all the mortages for the irresponsible about 300-600 billion dollars.
McCain wants double the amount you receive for earned income credit fro you children.
McCain approved of the government buying into the banks.
McCain wants to give out free school vouchers from the government.
McCain wants to redistribute the wealth form the poor to the rich, by giving the tax breaks to the rich instead of the middle class.
Again, who is the SOCIALIST?

Listen to McCain I guess the Republicans are the new tax and spend conservatives.

Comment by Joann

Obama’s plan is welfare. Taxes are suppose to have 2 purposes: 1. Pay for the business of government. 2. Pay for our military. Not to “spread the wealth around….” Welfare was stopped when the Earned income credit was added to the tax tables. Why are the blacks so upset about it being called welfare? Is it because it was next to impossible for a white person to get welfare? Believe me, my family needed it, but were disqualified because we had a JOB.

Comment by Christina

This is just BEYOND ridiculous. Leave it to this campaign to throw around terms like “socialist” and “liberal” in an attempt to scare people who are ignorant of their real meaning and how Obama’s plan actually works. If this ploy doesn’t pan out, I’m sure “communist” won’t be too far away. There is a reason George Washington warned against political factions in his farewell address and he would be disheartened to see his worse fears come to reality. This type of rhetoric only serves to polarize this nation even further and misrepresent the truth. Maybe McCain is trying to ironic with his slogan “Country First” because his behavior is FAR FROM IT!

Oh and btw McCain, Obama CLEARLY states that 95 percent of WORKING families will receive a tax cut. If you don’t work or pay income taxes, you aren’t included in the tax break. It helps if you actually READ your opponents plan.. but I guess only elitists read?

THIS IS AWFUL!! We need all the current taxes to make sure that Israel doesn’t lose any of the over $5billion in loans, economic & military aid that it receives per year! We need to help our friends in the mideast against those bad Palestinians.

McCain knows this. We should step up the name calling of Nobama and include Terrorist, Communist, Racist, and any other ist we can come up with in the next coming weeks. We should have another plumber ask if he wants to cut aid to Israel & if so, call him a Nazist too! Like Sarah says this should all be in a non-negative, non-malicious way. You go girl!

If people get paid more NOT to work than they get paid to work - why should they work??

Obama wants to give people on welfare a raise while working Americans can’t pay to put gas in their car to go back and forth to work AND buy groceries and pay their bills??

But people who don’t work he wants to give more money?? That’s not fair.

Lower taxes for working Americans. Do NOT give a “pay raise” to people who do not pay taxes!!

Let working people, true taxpayers, keep more of their own hardearned money!!

Spreading the wealth is socialism.

That Obama wants to hand people who DON’T EVEN PAY TAXES a CHECK, is spreading the wealth and socialism.

I am willing to INVEST in people to give them opportunities. I am not working my ass off to give them CASH. An investment implies a return on that investment. Yes, I expect people who get an opportunity courtesy of my hard work, to give something back ~ to society at least.

Anyone who gets a federal handout owes all the taxpayers some kind of public service.

As a Canadian, I find it somewhat stupid that Americans label Canada as Socialist so frequently, but after following this election, you know I just don’t care anymore. I see the USA rapidly deteriorating because the government is terrified to invest in its own people. Your public school system rates alongside countries like Mexico and Panama. You are the only wealthy country in the world that does not provide health care to every citizen. Your economy keeps tanking due to mismanagement.

I have spent a lot of time in the USA (probably a total of 5-6 years a few months at a time) and I have many Americans come and stay with me. Once we begin discussing health care and other issues, they are always shocked to hear that I can just go visit any doctor I like. That my doctor can order ANY tests and treatment that he/she thinks is needed (no approval from any insurance agency needed). That when an emergency occurs (my mother had a brain aneurism and needed brain surgery and 14 months of post surgery recovery and rehabilitation) nobody even thinks about money or finances. My mother’s surgery and treatment would have cost us about $800,000 in the USA, but here we never even had to think about it. When I watch American news I hear these stories about how horrible socialized medicine is, but they are simply lies. Check out world rankings on heart surgery success rates, on infant mortality, on wait times for surgery, on just about any statistic and you will see that Canada rates very close to the USA, above on some things below on others.

Now, keep in mind that our average income in Canada (for the middle class) is about the same as in the USA and that our total tax burden is about 2% higher than the USA. In fact, governments in the USA pay more per capita for health care than governments in Canada. How is this possible? The profit motive and corruption in your system makes your system about 2x as expensive as ours for every incident. The result is that those things in the USA that are covered by govt (such as Medicare and military coverage) is so expensive that your total bill per capita is greater than here. Anyway, I am sure many of you love your system and think its the best thing ever. Its simply not true, but you are welcome to your delusions.

I could talk about public education, but there is no sense my ranting on the pathetic state of your system, I am pretty sure you all know about that. I also will not mention infrastructure.

I will also mention that we have a market economy and our government is not really much more involved than yours (with the exception of health care, education, and banking management). Also, we have guns for hunting and all of the freedoms that you do (we even have laws against government wiretapping).

Anyway, maybe we are socialist (we do pay 2% higher taxes), but I am telling you, the quality of life for the average Canadian is MUCH MUCH better than for the average American. Its because our banking system is sound (we have regulations to prevent the greedy people from messing it up), because our public education system is good (these people grow up and run our factories, offices, schools, and everything else), and simply because we balance the need for economic growth with the need for long term investment in ourselves and our country.

So, I am not certain of why I wrote this, but many of you seem to be afraid of something without really knowing what it is. Maybe you should fear poverty, government mismanagement, a generation of undereducated youth, a failing infrastructure, and other things as much as you fear the big bad ’socialism’.

In response to Florance from France who indicated that France’s problems are due to Socialism.

France has amazingly adopted terrible policy after terrible policy. Unlike Canada (with universal public health care and good public schools), France is laden with laws regarding employement and every other aspect of economic behaviour (its impossible to fire anyone). That is simply stupid and is the reason why France is in such a poor state.

Yet, it is possible to have some wealth redistribution, some good social programs, and some other things without abandoning the free market.

We need to get beyond this right/left thinking (look at south America for an example of a place where there is no miiddle ground) and move towards accepting good social policies and good market policies.

I am so tired of these comments that 40 percent of Americans pay not taxes so lets use some real examples. Last year I PAID through payroll deduction abou $7,500 in federal taxes. McCains tax plan would decrease MY tax’s about $300 and Obama’s about $900 as I figure it. In addition McCains health plan would raise my taxable income about $7,000 because the health care insurance paid by my employer would now be considered part of my taxable income. Sounds like more of the old “trickle down” to me. That why I already voted for Obama.

McCain’s tactic of calling Obama’s policy socialist worked well in the 1950’s when Joe McCarthy called others communists. Today, given the fact that there are two weeks left before the election, the McCain comment comes across as phoney and political - a somewhat desperate attempt to create more fear about Obama. Whomever wins the election is going to have a heck of a time trying to straighten out the economy.

The Washington Post endorsed Obama yesterday - recognizing that both candidates have strengths and weaknesses. The article is worth reading and summarizes some of the key issues effectively.

I love this country…I truly do…but the clueless masses that continue to flock in droves to the Obama campaign just make me shake my head in disgust. It is not that McCain is the second coming or the absolute answer to all that ails us as a nation but he at least is a start. Call a spade a spade…Obama is a SOCIALIST. Believe this for the truth that is. If you are going to vote for him know that you are voting against capitalism and all that this great nation was built on. People please realize that we all need to take responsibility for our actions. The economy is in dire straits not just because of the greed on Wall Street as is so en vogue to say, but the equal greed that was it’s mirror on Main Street. Yes, average citizens did have a part in this. Banks were not forcing these loans on anyone, people made the decision to take the loan. That’s it. It’s really that simple. But no we don’t want to take responsibility for our actions. We would rather blame others. And now here comes Barak Obama telling everyone, he is going to fix it all and make everything better. WAKE UP! He cannot do this. Do you want someone to make your decisions for you? Are you truly that scared that you are willing to hand your life and livelihood over to the state? Do you have so little confidence in your own ability to survive and thrive? Life is not fair, and no one person, including Barak Obama can make it so. Take responsibility and pull yourself up. This country cannot afford to become the welfare state that Obama would create. Think twice vote once and make it count. McCain…the first step in the right direction.

if you vote for this want to be good luck..Obama is so far left wow i think he needs to run for office in the ussr

Look…Democrats simply want people to pay their fair share of taxes based on their income. If you make more, you can afford to pay more taxes and you’re still very well off after the fact. Right now the Dems feel the middle class is paying too much and upper income people are getting too much of a break. Like all Dems, Obama wants to correct this. That doesn’t make him Robin Hood or a socialist.

How disgusting. I am actually afraid now if McCain gets elected. This is such a show of desparation that it is pitiful. If he acts like this now, how would he govern the country?
BTW, Joann, McCain’s tax plan gives those making $226,919 to $603,402 an extra $8,159 tax break. If you make more than $603,403, you get a $48,862 tax reduction. I assume you are in that income bracket. I’m not. In Obama’s plan, those making $226,919 to $603,402 are taxed an extra $121. But those making $603,403 and up are taxed $93,709. That sounds a little more fair to me. If you make less than $18,981, McCain will tax you $21 less. (You read that correctly.) Obama will reduce your taxes by $567. There is obviously a fundamental difference in their economic approaches. It all depends on how much you want to pay the rich.
The November 2008 Money magazine has the entire chart of how the tax plans compare.

When is the media going to report on his affair with his former Finance Director Vera Baker who Michelle banished to the Caribbean.

Obama is a left-wing Liberal, racist and the left wing news media have not vetted him since Day One. He has had a free pass.

Thank you Fox News for reporting fairly.

So lets think about it…if the government bought the banks and managed mortgage lending THAT WOULD BE SOCIALISM!
Wake up folks Bush is leading the NATIONAL SOCIALIST PARTY. Obama is trying to make sure that the American taxpayer retains ownership and that the $700B doesn’t go to bailout corporations and overpaid executives.
REAGANOMICS is OVER! It is the reason for the crash. Get over it. Read how to save our economy by the Nobel laureate Yale professor Paul Krugman.

Obama doesn’t like to be called a socialist. He would rather have the socialists referred to as Obamaists instead.

It is what it is. If it looks and acts like a socialist it is a socialist. Bye the way socialist is just another softer name for communist. Barrack Hussain Obama is a Socialist and has told us so.
He told Joe the plummer that “we have to spread the wealth around”. What is that? IF not a bold face admission of a socialist paln to re-distribute the wealth of hard working Americans. Our fore Fathers went to war with England over a 2 cent hike in tea tax. What would they do today? Maybe that is why Obama wants to take away our guns and our god given right to defend ourselves from an ever more oppressive government. Taxes are not patriotic, they are slavery!
Don’t Tread on Me.

We are so quick to call the democrats socialist, but when the tax breaks [ wellfare checks] was being sent to the rich ,you all thought that was ok,that was no different than giving the rich tax breaks . How stuipid are you republicans, it seems to be ok for the republicans to do as they want, but if a democrat does it, oh no the republicans act like little girls and cry. In the general election of the past the republicans have out spent the democrats 2 - 1 and sometimes more. finaly the democrats get a candidate that america help fund , we have finaly got more money to run our ads to block the lies of the republicans, by the way the lies always come out near the time of the election. I was a supporter of mccain not after i finaly woke up to all the lies the republicans have been spreading wake up america stop voting for lies. The republican party show a lot of signs of being communist. VOTE DEMOCRAT

Look at Obama’s relationship with Frank Marshall Davis and Odinga(his cousin according to Odinga) from Kenya. Both are Marxist and one has committed to force Sharia on the country when in power.

The press is our chief ideological weapon.

I once said, “We will bury you,” and I got into trouble with it. Of course we will not bury you with a shovel. Your own working class will bury you.

Christina:
You swallowed nobama’s load hook, line & sinker. As for the tax break, McCain is correct 40% do not pay any tax, even if they have a job, so the 95% figure is a lie. If you don’t work or pay taxes you won’t get a tax break but you will get a free handout, me thinks that does reek of Socialism.

Comment by Sally Mae

Unfortunately both candidates are leaning towards socialism. I am very sorry my fellow republicans, but it is the truth. For this reason McCain is losing the support of libertarians and capitalists. Between the proposal to buy bad mortgages, pushing for the bailout (when the majority of the republicans did NOT want it) and now sending checks for families so they can buy health care he is losing the support. And talking about health, why don’t we stop charging income tax on health care professionals? This will increase the interest of citizens to study these carriers thus increasing the supply of the service and lowering its cost. This is a real capitalist solution!

It might be a good idea to know what socialism is. Obama is not re-distributing wealth. He knows, and all of America knows that there have been tax loopholes and tax breaks put in place for those that make a lot of money. All he is doing is making a more fair and balanced tax system. Like he said, trickle down doesn’t work. Tax loopholes and tax breaks have only resulted in greed. Seems like when corporate profits rise CEO’s take home more money, but neglect to invest in the employees who helped the company earn those profits. Geesh, I know I can hear and I know what he said, American’s are not stupid. Perhaps if people who worked and could actually earn a living wage, they could pay the bills and still have money left over to purchase goods and maybe, just maybe that would put more money into the economy. Now stop acting like you know. I would just like to add a little side note here. It seems the Republicans want to make a stake that they are the party of Christian values. Just so you know, and I even went back and double checked my very own Bible(yes us liberals do own them, we actually read them too), but you are not even remotely close to the way of living that Jesus taught. I won’t go into detail, read the book yourself, especially those words in red. And if you even think that Sarah Palin represents women, pleassssssssssssssssssse. And BTW, ok so I may be rambling, but since when did serving in the military make anyone better than someone who has not. People do many things to contribute to society. I, myself am trying my best to raise one responsible child who will understand the we are all our brothers keeper, and that when Jesus’ disciples asked him, when did we see you hungry and not feed you, when did we see you naked and not clothe you, when were you in prison and we did not visit you, Jesus told them, whenever you did this to the least of those, you did it to me. Also pay close attention to the beatitudes. Now just stop all the attacks on Obama, unless you actually have some facts. Or are you just so afraid that you just might not have all those little treasures that you are storing up on earth where rust and moths will destroy them anyway. See, us liberal Democrats know exactly what Christianity is all about.
