McCain declares “I am not President Bush”
by Mosheh Oinounou
HEMPSTEAD, NY — Memorable moment at the top of the debate tonight at Hofstra University. Senator McCain made his most explicit statement to date distancing himself President Bush declaring:
“Senator Obama, I am not President Bush, if you wanted to run against President Bush you should have run four years ago. I will take this country in a new direction.”
McCain usually mentions differences he has had with the President on Iraq and torture but has never gone this far before.

I clapped when John McCain found his backbone,,,Obama has been running over him an his party.Glad to see McCain is as tuff as i have heard .Good debate with the spark of truth an a buzz saw….this sure wasn’t a tea party ,Thank goodness .truth of character is American all the way .
My comment on “I am not president Bush” FANTASTIC come back ,,,and it’s about TIME…..
Bottom line: Sarah Palin can never be president.
EXCELLENT comment! Finally McCain shows he is not going to put up with this hack Obama. McCain did a GREAT JOB! Obama kept making that stupid face and taking drinks of water to hold back his anger…HAHAHAHA Go get him McCAin!! Loved it! However I am sure all the pundits will say Obama won … as usual and Frank Luntz will have all his Obama supporters “claim” to be undecideds that have switched to obama….but we all know the truth. And YES we do care about Ayers!
Brett Hume and his panel are absolutely wrong in downplaying McCain’s superb performance in tonight’s debate in which he kept B. H. Obama on the defensive–people: ignore the panelists and think for yourselves! We who do not drink the liberal cool aid have no problem in objectively discerning the superior (Republican) candidate who is the only one qualified for the Presidency. Also, ignore Frank Luntz who is obviously in the tank for Obama (Fox News, you should know better…).
Poor McCain…. but we love Bush
That got a high mark! Obama needs to get off that, it isn’t working for him. I am voting for you. The speech is’nt as smooth as the big talker, but there is substance so you’re our guy! McCain/Palin
McCain wins hands down! And Frank luntz always has the so-called “undecided” voters who are sooo obviously obama supporters. Obama LOST that debate and no one can say he didn’t. Any undecided voter who watched this debate is now voting McCain!
But your party follows the same policies and we’re all tired of both the party and the policies. We want our country back!
McCain’s declaration that he’s not President Bush was right on. He’s not and your account that McCain didn’t win the debate is beginning to get as boreing as watching CBS or NBC.
McCain’s comment that he’s not President Bush was right on, it was the line of the night. Your commentary that he didn’t win the debate is getting as boreing as watching CBS or NBC.
McCain is definitely not President Bush. He is only 90% Bush and 10% right.
Please! We can’t take four more years of Bush.
At a boy McCain! Take this guy to the Cleaners. Get fired up and show the American Public in a fiery voice that your vision is drastically better than Senator Government!
you may not be the same person, but you have agreed with his policies 90% of the time McCain! you can’t lie about that!
te polls are not correct……what is there every demo out there voting for obama on every website? when I tried to get into the different wbsites to vote it said to vote for anothe candidate.
you tell me this is correct. WATCH OUT AMERICA THE POLLS ARE FIXED BY ALL OF THE DEMOS
McCain finally put Obama’s “Your just like George Bush” line to rest. Way to go John!!!!
I’ve been waiting to hear McCain say this for months. It is about time!
McCain is wrong. He may not be President Bush, but he might as well be President Bush. The differences between McCain and Bush are indistinguishable.
Slamma lamma ding dong! Obama just got smoked! McCann is going to take that socialist down!
Yow we can’t beliee you did not get my message.
MC cain won******** Obama proved himself as a socialest. I am a 60 yr old lady who wants
to see our country prosper. Not to distibute the wealth. Please alow folks to make money be suggcessfull and keep their money. Obama is a socialest and would love to ssee this country
fail. He and his welare program will break this country by it’s back. Who is this man.??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
I think McCain won the debate he really hit Obama hard and Obama was not able to hit back as hard on McCain. Who are these retarded commentators with Brit Hume and were they watching the same debate I was watching? These commentators all agreed that McCain lost the debate and they were all wrong too. So Obama is calm during a debate big deal he still hasn’t got even five minutes of experience.
Perhaps McCain should have let Obama know that the America people can help educate him on the differences. If Obama would just get to know some of them. Really, if McCain created a program that allowed U.S. citizens to trade their citizenship for $20,000 in cash, today, many Obama’s supporters would be on their way to a militant socialist worker’s paradise, like Cuba, Iran, or Burma.
JOHN MCCAIN IS RIGHT HE ISN’T GEORGE BUSH . IF THIS IS ALL THAT OBAMA CAN TALK ABOUT IS BUSH WERE SICK OF CLINTON MESS HE MADE IN THE WHITE HOUSE THAT PRESIDENT BUSH HAD TO CLEAN UP AFTER. BELIEVE ME IF OBAMA GET IN THE WHITE HOUSE WE WILL BE CLEANING UP AFTER HIM EVEN MORE . MCCAIN AN PLAIN IS THE ONLY ONE WHO CAN TURN THIS MESS AROUND JUDY
Right. McCain is not Pres. Bush. And Richard Nixon was not a crook.
That’s the whiole clip? Ok, I understand that one-liners are useful… but is that all I get to hear? Ok, so John McCain isn’t President Bush, but his campaign is definitely President Bush’s campaign. Just saying… if McCain isn’t President Bush, that can only lead me to believe that Sarah Palin must be. This was a one-liner that should’ve been used a long time ago if he really thought that he was THAT different from Bush.
I think that finally Mc Cain showed who Obama really is he is a Big lier. What he mentioned about Colombia and why he does not back the treaty, is a big lie. He has never seen or even know where Colombia is, and he dares to talk so badly about us If this is is the way he talks about the allies, what can we expect of him? We know that Castro backs him, the same as Chavez; I guess everyboby can imagine in which directionhe would love to take our country……
this is a moment when we cannot have someone learn what it means to be in charge for the first time. If in charge, he cannot vote present as he is used to, but he will have to make decissions. i don’t want someone guessing what he should do, but one that will have the knowledge and experience to be our leadre.
You voted with George Bush 90% of the time. You may not be George Bush, but you sure went along with his stupid and immoral leadership pretty frequently.
Your stupid choice of a running mate strikes me as being very George Bush-like. Did Jesus speak to you as well as George about making important decisions?
You can put lipstick on a pig, it’s still a pig. Your policies match Bush’s.
It was about time McCain stood up and said “I’m not Bush.” I love it, I love what McCain did tonight, and I hope that people start opening their eyes.
You missed McCain’s best comment to Obama policy. He went on the attack at Obama’s lack of support to drilling offshore for oil. This is absolutely a necessity to Americans and McCain is the candidate who will deliver. The comment separating him from George W. Bush was not important. What Americans need is a president who is willing to get us away from the dependence on foreign oil. That grinning, smirking fool won’t do it. Coupled with the Democratic Congress, he’ll put us into a total economic depression.
Fair and Balanced, I don’t think so!
Go Johnny Go!!!!!!!!!! He flew into “the danger zone” tonight…..he needs to bring out the inner
fighter pilot! The POW who refused freedom when offered it by our enemies….because it was
the right thing to do….that’s called CHARACTER my friends and McCain has it in spades!!! Vote
McCain to protect the USA
Someone must explain where Obama is getting all these numbers…is he just making them up…He keeps saying things like, 25 million households will be hurt..How can he possibly know that?
I think McCain is far more respected around the world the Obama will ever be…
I can not trust anyone who will hang with those shady figures.
Sure Obama is smooth, but that is a learned reaction and when there is a serious conflict with another country, all his slick talk will not help us…
Why can’t any of you reporters see Obama for what he is……a man with no record and a very suspect background, that he will not explain…he just glosses over it.
Obama is a slick Con-artist and is playing a lot of people for fools.
He has done nothing to earn the highest office in our country.
Give me McCain who understands the world and its problems and not a slick talker like Obama.
If you all want to have Rev. Wright, Ayers, Russo and all the creeps that Obama knows coming to the White House and taking over, then god help us all…..
LOL! He took this line straight out from an article that was published a couple days ago ….. advice from people on what each candidate should say or do. This really tickles me. Oh McCain! Yer funnay!
Love McCain’s response. How appropriate
MIGHT NOT BE GEORGE BUSH ,BUT HE WANTS TO RUN THE COUNTRY LIKE HIM.
Love the response. How clever!
I think this should help all the Bush derangement democrats and undecided voters understand that John McCain is not George Bush. Although this troubles me, the company that I work for are all kool-aid drinking obama supporters. Their company has grown and prospered unlike any time in their 34 year existence. The Bush tax cuts helped them more than even the Reagan tax cuts. And yet they are still democrats and don’t understand what will happen to the their company (my employer) if this MARXIST obama is the next leader of the free world. I’ll weep for my country if this happens.
I’d rather live one day as a Lion than 1000 years as a sheep.
Jerry
He is right, he isn’t Pres. Bush. THANK GOD. Imagine having Bush in office to dig the hole even deeper than it already is.
As an inde, and after seeing the debate and listening to the Fox News reporters, I must say that I am now leaning towards Obama. Reason… you make me feel like I did see or hear the debate. Obama specifically stated on many issues his plan however, you contradicts everything Obama said. I am now for Obama, not just because McCain did express this plan, but Fox News has turned me off and mis-stating the facts.
I thought this was a great comment. I am sort of sick of Obama acting as though McCain is a George Bush clone. If he would just actually look at McCains’ record he could see that there have been many times McCain has disagreed with Bush. I am glad that McCain finally set the record straight.
gee glad McCain finally told him he isn’t bush and if he wanted to run against bush he should have 4 years ago.
I think it was awesome that Senator McCain said that. Good for him.
Wow, that WAS the moment he needed. I have the utmost respect for “W,” but that fact is, THEY ARE NOT THE SAME PEOPLE, and are in fact quite different. I think a more appropriate connection would be Obama with the Left wing nutt jobs like Reid and Pelosi.
McCain nailed this debate
Well timed and well spoken. I also liked him picking apart the”eloquence” of the fluff that comes out of Obama`s mouth. Obama, to me looked smug and like the elitist he was labeled last year by ….. Hillary supporters!
Well done Mccain!
GOD BLESS YOU MCCAIN—-OUR HERO TO LEAD THIS GREAT NATION——-NO HARM WILL COME TO OUR GREAT NATION UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!!!!!!!
NOT ON MCCAIN AND PALIN WATCH
I didn’t get to see the whole debate, but I did get to hear how he made the statement he was not President Bush. I know he has spent his career fighting the status quo regarding pork barrel spending, and every other issue which seemed to be unreasonable. The thing I am concerned about is that Obama is a very polished speaker, and he can make people believe anything he says. I believe he will win the election because we have too many people who are impressed with his “flash” and the promises he makes, but they don’t take the time to research and find out that he promises the moon, but doesn’t tell how he is going to pay for it. Just like everybody else, he makes promises, then when he gets the job, he fails to deliver. It will be interesting to see how our country will suffer if he is elected and can’t deliver on all the promises he makes so well.
Nice sound bite…but we all knew that from South Carolina in 2000, right? We should have.
I hate that Senator McCain had to “play nice” for the last 8 years. What happended to this fine America hero (who like any Greek tragedy hero, has made his share of mistakes…but later paid their penance)…was an American tragedy.
I would have loved if he would have selected either one of the “Joes” as his running mate - either Liberman, the “Plumber” or even Biden. I did and still do have serious doubts about whether Palin is ready. However, if I use history as a guide, there once was a Democrat from Missouri who was selected as FDR’s running mate during WWII. Many considered him a “country bumpkin” and Harry S. Truman did just fine - came as a relief pitcher and got the “save” for World War II, and lead the way for the reconstruction of Europe and Japan. I guess we should never underestimate the power of the Rural America.
In 2000, my dream team would have been a Powell/McCain or McCain/Powell ticket…but that’s probably why I’m now a Floridia Independent - a recoverying Mississippi Republican since 1999. But as my Dad would always say, “No use crying over ’spoiled’ milk.” (Whatever that means?)
Wow no liberal comments on here. Guess McCain shut them up. Good grief…finally!
Obama was amazing. I think this final debate really showed the difference between ignorance and intelligence. I’ve read the other posts on this site and find them patently small-minded and the same sort of feeble, fearful sentiments that have always held back truth and justice. If Jesus came back today the Republicans would crucify him twice.
I live in a house divided and I thought this remark was the defining moment for our household. My husband, a small business owner, beaten down by the economy and so anti Bush that for the first time in 25 years we are at odds at who should be in the White House. Hearing John McCain call Obama out on “you should have been running against Bush” was perfect for all of those people associating McCain with Bush out of lack of effort on really addressing the details of the issues….my hubby included. I’m can’t understand why anyone would even consider Obama when all he can do is speak like a lawyer…seriously..that is ALL he has and can do! Go McCain..and by the way Go JOE PLUMBER!!!!!
Mccain is a wise man.
Obama better not raise taxes on anyone or
we will end up in a depression.
Rick Shepard. You say “it will be interesting to see how our country will suffer if he (Obama) is elected and can’t deliver on all the promises he makes so well”. Why do you find a suffering America interesting? Fox News wants to know.
I am so glad Senator McCain said that - I am sick and tired of hearing Obama and the dems running against President Bush. NEWS FLASH - PRESIDENT BUSH LEAVES OFFICE IN JANUARY 09 - HE IS NOT RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT!!!!
Good night republicans…….it’s been a fantastic 8 years (pun intended)……hello Obama 08!
Fox News is a joke. Post debate analysis - how many Obama supporters (prior to the debate) are in the focus group? zero! Neither fair nor balanced. Text poll - 87% say McCain won debate (same as in previous two debates), yet flip to any other network - polls say Obama won debate by wide margin. Either Fox News has the best polling in the country or its a total distortion of the truth. I bet the latter.
All you rightwing nut jobs fretting about the demise of the country if Obama wins are getting a taste of what 51% of Americans thought about W in ‘00 and ‘04. Enjoy them apples. Country already went to hell in a handbasket thanks to W and neocon’s failed philosophy.
I’m happy that Rove, W, Cheney, Rummy and Wolfie final put an end to the notion of a permanent Republican majority. Its been great watching the country come to the realization that the ultra-conservative movement was so flawed. Now we can all move on.
For all of you who voted for W in ‘04 (I can excuse ‘00 - so you didn’t see the obvious), you are not qualified to pick a president, so I suggest you sit this one out.
Regime change - 11/4/08.
I loved when McCain stood up to Obama and told him that he wasn’t Bush. I think he hounding on bush because he couldn’t find anything that bad on McCain. The only thing that troubles me is how so many people can be swayed by a debate. I keep thinking people READ THE FACTS. Stop letting what you hear them say alone be a deciding factor.
[...] was ook dat Republikeinen erg te spreken waren over dit moment: WPvideo [...]
Just because McSame says he is not Bush does not make it so. A 90% pro-Bush record tells me he would be more of the same. This was McCain’s chance to say WHY he isn’t Bush but yet he didn’t. This debate helped me solidify my pick for Obama. While he was busy showing he knew the issues and that he actually understood them, McCain only glanced over the issues and gave his normal stump-like responses.
You don’t have to be President Bush to advocate his political philosophy (or lack there of.)
I definitely agree with Rick Shepard. McCain is definitely a less “pleasing” speaker to listen to and watch. It’s frustrating to see Obama MORE calm and collected than McCain and regrettably, (and this is obviously only my opinion) a little less direct (??).
McCain needed to do one thing:
Articulate.
What he did:
Attack attack attack. Not a bad choice, if IN ADDITION you just keep it SIMPLE and explain to the sizable part of America that doesn’t actually research their candidates, what you will do as President.
How to do it….
Example:
One sentence: “I will not raise taxes.” BAM. Why? Because blah blah blah. But here’s what’s key: you’ve already said what matters most. And now, it’s what people are thinking about and remembering, even if what you say after is just noise to them.
Honestly, we GET IT that Obama has less experience and unfortunate connections to some questionable people. Now tell us what we already know but need to hear from you. What all the gray areas on the states in question need to understand. It definitely takes one sentence for each topic. So give the headline, then details after. K.I.S.S. principle: “Keep it simple stupid.” SO FRUSTRATING MCCAIN.
Quite frankly I agree with Mr. Shepard when he says that Obama may win the presidency simply because he came across much better than McCain. And I hope with alot of hope that I am wrong.
DUH… well of course you are NOT George Bush… BUT… you are the Dummy that sits in Bushs’ lap while he pushes and operates your Republican buttons from your back…. and when you open your mouth, Bush operates that too and we hear HIS voice.
The USA needs to throw away this ventriloquist act… get rid of the bad performer and his dummy… ( where are the Gong Show Judges when you need them ??? )
John McCain won this debaate…hand down . I am so sick of both sides declaring victory. It waas obvious to everyone I watched with that McCain was forceful land direct, honest, and feisty. I liked it! By the way, we are all liberal minded, but not this year, we are all voting McCain/Palin!
McCain’s right…… The Republicans actually supported Bush, and we don’t support McCain lol.
Hey Jerry,
You’re already a sheep!
Sen. McCain, you may not be G.W. Bush in the flesh, but your difference with him on political philosophy and policies are a nuance at best. You may have the Kool-aid republicans fooled, like Obama has his kool-aid democrats, but you don’t fool me.
Hey Folks I have one question for all of you OBAMA/BIDEN supporters and that is
What is one half of one percent of the total United States of America budget?
This is the pork that is being wasted by the congress. In just one bill alone to give you an example
the congress just spent $110Billion dollars for wasteful items. That is just one bill passed now multiply that by the rest that congress and the president signs into law and you will get a better
idea of what that one half of one percent that Obama keeps mentioning.
Are too.
If you wanted to run against President Bush you should have run four years ago. What is so funny about this is; Obama isn’t qualified now, let alone four years ago.
Is anyone else finding themselves yelling at the T.V.; Obama read a script six months ago and he sticks to it. He sounds like a broken record, this is his way of sounding intelligent when he doesn’t know what the hect he is talking about.
Blah, blah, blah..
VOTED WITH BUSH 95% of the time! And look where our country is!! Thanks, grandpa!
McCain will take 1.3 TRILLION out of Medicare and Medicaid…
From the Wall Street Journal:
“John McCain would pay for his health plan with major reductions to Medicare and Medicaid, a top aide said, in a move that independent analysts estimate could result in cuts of $1.3 trillion over 10 years to the government programs.”

Deal breaker, McCain!!
Obama 08
The American people won last night’s debate. The 2nd debate was a joke. Here is what we got out of it. Obama want to redistrubute our wealth and take care of all of us just like in socialist countries and other countries leaning towards communism. He talks great (most great rulers do with big amount of followers) but his brief record in the Senate and current policies are the radical left wing of the Democratic party.
