McCain poised for a comeback

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA — John McCain says he is down in the polls but told more than 16,000 supporters today that they have the Democrats “just where we want them.”

“Let me give you the state of the race today and some straight talk. We have 22 days to go. We’re six points down. The national media has written us off,” McCain said to cheers in a packed convention center in Virginia Tidewater country.  “Senator Obama is measuring the drapes, and planning with Speaker Pelosi and Senator Reid to raise taxes, increase spending, take away your right to vote by secret ballot in labor elections…and concede defeat in Iraq.”

McCain was joined by running mate Sarah Palin for the rally as the GOP ticket is being forced to play defense in the historically Republican state (a Democrat hasn’t won since 1964) in the closing weeks of the election. The rally took place in Virginia Beach, among the places McCain will have to win big in in order to keep the state in his column.

“You know what they forgot? They forgot to let you decide,” he said to cheers. “My friends, we’ve got them just where we want them. What America needs in this hour is a fighter.”

McCain introduced the slightly retooled stump describing the sorry state of economic affairs and offered an issues-based contrast with Obama on the economy–removing his harsh indictment of the Democrat’s character which were central to his speeches last week. He warned that given the current state of affairs, there will be no time for a president to get on on-the-job training as “our enemies watch.”

McCain also compared Obama to Herbert Hoover, the Republican president who presided over the start of the Great Depression, chiding him for his opposition to the Bush tax cuts and a number of free trade agreements.

“The last President to raise taxes and restrict trade in a bad economy as Senator Obama proposes was Herbert Hoover,” he said to boos. “That didn’t turn out too well. They say those who don’t learn the lessons of history are doomed to repeat them. Well, my friends, I know my history lessons, and I sure won’t make the mistakes that Senator Obama will.”

He also took a shot at President Bush’s tenure at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, noting that, “we cannot spend the next four years as we have spent much of the last eight: waiting for our luck to change…we have to act immediately. We have to change.”

McCain concluded with his final crescendo from his convention speech, calling on his supporters to fight in the closing days of the election.

“I’m an American and I choose to fight. Don’t give up hope. Be strong. Have courage and fight,” he said. “Stand up, stand up, stand up and fight. America is worth fighting for. Nothing is inevitable here. We never give up. We never quit. We never hide from history. We make history. Now, let’s go win this election and get this country moving again.”

Mccain is losing because of his own slef inflicted bad choices and negative politics. He lost in our high school vote by a 4-1 margin. We are regionalizing the vote to see if we are alone in our findings. As the youth of the country vote prior to the election of the adults, it will by quite revealing. So far, McCain has no trust, no plan and no future in the eyes of our youth.
Palen is percieved as a power hungry unprepaired barbie. This was McCaine’s
most serious blunder. How can he be so slef deluded to put such an uinprepaired dimwit in the vp slot. Obama has no need to threaten to kick anyone’s but in the final debate, He already has based on his plan for America. McCain represents the old guard who are responsible for the the econimic and foriegn policy mess we’re today. Obama will BIG TIME!!

thinking people…NOT those centered in emotions and bias, know that McCain has the necessary experience and fortitude. This man — to the chagrin of some, isn’t ‘far right’ but sufficiently ‘centrist conservative’ to protect our union and right the ‘entitlement laden’ economy!

John McCain may be correct - maybe he will end up winning - what a shame if that happens. The poor ole GOP, everyone picking on them. The operative word in GOP is “old” - old ideas, old lines, old strategies - just old.

I have to say… As a former hillary supporter during the primary, I noticed media bias for Obama… And now its happening again with mccain…. And now the argument that if people who are not black who will not vote for Obama are now considered racists? Well as a latino I am not a racist… I think obama is… how can U sit in a racist church for 20 yrs? I am shocked to see how alot of americans are so blinded by this and duped… Its like if soemthing negative is said about obama then U are considered a racist… This is crazy…. Well I`m voting mccain… I just can`t stomach voting for someone who is so arrogant and I believe stole the nomination from hillary… As far as the media making a bigf deal about usiung his middle name… Jesus is U don`t feel comfortable sayin your middle name…. Then why do U want to be my president? U shouldn`t run for the presidency if your middle name offends yourself… Its just so sickening seeing this going on…. In fional I think mccain/palin should give obama a taste of his own medicine… look at this ad against hillary… If mccain was smart he would use this against obama… have obamas face on that screen talkin to zombie like people and have the mccain girl snap the crowd out of it… Its nopthing racail… hey if this overnight sensation can dish it out then he should take it as well….

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6h3G-lMZxjo

P.S : I never thought in my life I would vote republican but just to see my party hijacked by obama leaves me no choice… Plus I like sarah Palin… Good choice mccain

I’m not sure how he will fight for me. I believe no one has been president before they are 1st elected and McCain’s comment about on the job training would apply to such presidents as well, some who’ve done well. I feel like he wants me to be scared of Obama, but doesn’t really tell me why except for an overreaching comment about Hebert Hoover. I get that comment, but I don’t believe they are the same at all. The “just where we want them” comment was out there too. Is he joking? Or is he just saving face? I have no idea with this guy and that is scarier than a Harvard grad./Senator who’s ideals match my own. McCain is not far off, but Palin is so different from I that she worries me the most. I’m not a joe six pack hockey mom, and I consider myself a regular American mother. I’m glad McCain stopped the hate mongering, because I was feeling totally ignored in a great economic crisis.

Comment by Lady Hawk

“Re-tooled” does not address the FACT that McCain’s speech is CONSISTENT. He is ONCE AGAIN highlighting the message of fighting corruption, standing up against the corrupt, helping to rebuild the economy, and he has the experience to be ready on day one.

Despite the overwhelming criticism of McCain’s campaign strategies, the one thing that is being overlooked is that it is indeed a strategy; one planned out well before the economic crisis.

McCain’s economic plans were what the American people needed before the economic crisis, and he has been very specific about what changes he will make in light of the economic crisis.

Obama needs a major overhaul of his plan, which was never designed to promote economic growth in the first place but merely targeted at changing government into a socialistic regime.

McCain-Palin have put the truth before the American public. Obama is hiding behind a cloud of lies, corruption and cover-ups.

Now is not the time for the American people to put a rookie in the White House. Even Palin is more qualified and experienced to be president on day 1 than Obama, and she has a record to prove it.

Wake up America!

It will be interesting to watch how many more changes there will be in the McCain approach before election day as they try to find the one that will work. It changes every few days lately.

It has been interesting to watch how the McCain campaign has been trying to do what the pundits have told them to do in their “What do you think McCain needs to do to turn this around?” political team discussions. Several said he needed to bring up Ayers and Wright. (He knew Wright wouldn’t work because of Palin’s radical religious background, so didn’t go there). So, they went with Ayers, but they took it too far and got people too worked up. The pundits also said that the McCain campaign needed to come up with a unique, workable economic plan. So, they came up with the $300 billlion home mortage plan. That didn’t work either. Then they suggested that the McCain campaign should come up a solid economic plan that would resonate with the people. They came up with a 401k plan to allow those over 70 to hold onto their 401k longer. I don’t know if that is sticking or not. Then the pundits said they needed to get tougher. Today they are trying another attempt at an economic plan. They are trying to sound tough with words like ” I’m going to kick Obama’s…..”, “I’m the comeback kid,” or “I’m going to fight, fight, fight.”
I think I will just sick back and watch.

To the folks who think Sen Obama is about change should look at CNN. THey are giving examples of where Sen Obama on 20 seperate items is just like President Bush, so I guess we will be getting four more years of Bush what ever way we go McCain or Obama.
The primary voting point for McCain is the fact that he has less fine print that does Obama.
Look at the fine print and you will see the costs rising for this and for that. They might not be called
taxes but they will cost you just like the State of Massechusets (Dont raise taxes just raise fees).

Any one who would vote for Obama is just plain stupid unless ofcourse the want a
Socialist Country and that’s exactly what we will have is a very short time. Obama has
went to the Center for this election but everyone knows how liberal he is. With Nancy,
Reid, Dodd and the likes and then Obama as President this country will slide so far
to the left that we won’t know it as the same Country.
I for one love my Country and so I will be voting for John McCain.

Also I have lived in Illinois all my life and if I have learned anything its is the motto of Illinois politics is (if you can’t buy the election, steal it or if you can’t steal it, buy it.)

Comment by Campbell

Comeback? From what?

I think the American people need to prepare themselves to live in a socialist society. If Obama is elected, that is exactly what will happen. Democrats will have total control including the filibuster. Pelosi is licking her lips to end the Republic and she just might get her wish. You can’t go for eight years with a corrupt president who passed himself off as a conservative, for Bush will go down in history not only as the worst president in American history but the president who led us into socialism. If you think PC is correct now, just wait.

Comment by Connie Behrens

I would like for someone to ask McCain why in 2001 and 2005 he was against the Bush tax cuts for the rich. He stated that more than once, but now he is for keeping them. Just don’t understand why no one asks that question when they interview him.

Comment by GrammieJ

McCain and Palin did more damage on the campaign trail last week than is possible to make up for the next 100 years, about the time McCain thinks we get out of IRAQ.

Their message was so bad, so unbelievable, they helped Obama every time they opened their mouth to speak a word.

Also, Palin was “stinky” and has no right to criticize anyone when the troopergate found that she abused her authority and violated ethics. What a joke she is.

Comment by willie whyte

McCain sounds like an empty barrel. Now what do we do?
I just listened to Obama’s speech which was filled with detail about improving the middle classes lives almost starting from now!
All we reps do is slam Obama which we all seem to agree does nothing to change the 10%-12% voter margin.
I need something more concrete from McCain.
OR ELSE!!!

Go John McCain! First year I ever voted. First year I’ve ever blogged. I’ve been following this race and I know very well the political angles that and round-abouts-of-truth. This race has become more and more like the O.J. Simpson trial. It’s not about right or wrong or voicing differences but about a look-alike contest. It’s simply not OK. You people need to really check the facts and know why your voting and not doing it for some cheap thrill and a bottle of alcohol. John McCain and Sara Palin are the right choices. I’ve put links from McCain and Obama - of course I chose, but there’s a lot of things that you should know about both!

You know your political campaign is in trouble when you are more popular with late night comics instead of the national news media. This has been the case ever since McCain pulled a political stunt by picking a clueless Sarah Palin as his VP running mate. Palin had the pretty lipstick to juice up the campaign but unfortunately was as clueless as a pig on subjects that mattered to voters. The McCain/Palin ticket is toast and the best thing McCain can do in the next three weeks is to “play nice” and try to help the GOP retain seats in closely contested congressional races. Anyway you look at it, Nov. 4 is going to be “ugly” for Republican politicians.

Subject: Barack Obama’s mother– Stanley Ann Dunham (1942-1995) - ‘Genealogy’ website

Unless my math is wrong, this page on S. Ann Dunham, Barack Obama’s mother’s time-line shows some discrepancies. Or does it? See below:

http://genealogy.wikia.com/wiki/Stanley_Ann_Dunham_(1942-1995)

Stanley Ann Dunham was born: 11/27/1942
She graduated H.S. at 16?– Summer 1959
She turned 18: NOV 1960
Barack born: 4/8/1961

Back-track from Barack’s birth on 4/’61 to when he was conceived, ostensibly July of 1960– and Ann would be only 17 years old at his conception. This means Ann was pregnant and under-age for several months until she turned 18 in November of 1960.

Back then, parents had their daughter marry the guy who got her pregnant. That may be the real reason she was ‘married,’ soon ’separated,’ returned back to WA state without her ‘husband’ (who was headed back home to Kenya), and then later ‘divorced him.’

There’s an un-told story here! Who’s going to get the rest of the details– and let the public know the truth?!!! I wonder if B. Obama Jr. was really even born when they said he was born? And whether his parents were ever really married!

Comment by RIP_RNC

One of the only constants in life is change. You can either embrace change or hide from it. That is the choice, bottom line, in this Presidential election. Do we want another 4 years of the same failed policies? Do we hide from the changes in the rest of the world and our own domestic issues or do we embrace the changes, understand them, master them, and excel above the rest of the world again? That is what we are choosing between.

The single biggest issue facing our country is our energy dependence. It effects every aspect of our current problems in terms of domestic policy, economically, and in respect to foreign policy.
Because we produce 25% of our country’s need for oil, we import the rest. We are borrowing massive amounts of money from the Chinese, right now estimated at over $500 billion, to give $1 trillion to the oil exporters of the Middle East. Another 5 years of that and our standing as the world’s greatest economy is over. As it is, our national debt is over $11 trillion dollars.
In regard to foreign policy, our dependence on foreign oil handcuffs our ability to display strength and will internationally. Why were we unable to bring significant pressure on Russia to leave Georgia? Russia exports 30% of the world’s oil. Why haven’t we threatened and been more aggresive with Iran with their nuclear threat? They are the 2nd largest exporter in OPEC. Our foreign policy is being dictated by our energy dependence.
An investment now in renewable energies will accomplish multiple objectives. First, it allows us to regain our international standing, for example, “don’t push us, or you’ll be sorry, we don’t need you anymore.” Second, a significant investment in renewables will yield up to an estimated 5 million new jobs in the next 10 years. These jobs cannot be outsourced. The 5 million people will buy things. Homes, cars, stuff to put in their homes, clothes, etc. They will pay income tax, they will pay into the Social Security system and help ease the burden on current taxpayers. They will pay property taxes to the state on their homes which will generate additional revenue and pull the states out of their considerable financial distress.
Barak Obama is the candidate who has expressed the most comprehensive plan regarding the energy changes we need to make in order to realize the goals I’ve discussed above. He agrees with the need for increased domestic capacity for oil, but will invest heavily in eliminating our country’s dependence on foreign oil bought from countries that could be considered hostile. McCain’s only solution is to drill offshore which in reality won’t yield a drop of oil for 10 years. We don’t have 10 years to change our dependence. It has to be attacked NOW.

I’m an Independent in Northern Virginia, 41, white.

Let me give you some straight talk. Your campaign focus switches up every week. You’re playing nothing but defense in once reliable red states. You encourage suspicious hate rhetoric speeches then have to put out your own fire. You choose a very unqualified VP who’s only experience is running the 3rd least populated state for 2 years. Also who has been an embarrassment representative to the GOP. I’m all for the idea of a woman but Kailey Bae Hutchinson would have been a much better respected choice. I have voted for Bush the last couple cycles but I’m done drinking this kool-aid. If running a campaign is any meter of how to run a country then “my friends” the choice is clear Barack Obama. I hope the GOP learns from this disaster and brings a much more formidable nominee next time.

You need to do your homework! I sat down and really looked at Obama’s tax plan. He is not exactly telling the truth. He is proposing tax credits not a tax cut. With all of his options for credits like day care, college, etc. there are people who will receive a check for as much as $10,000 and without paying a penny of tax. I am an empty nester who is barely over his limit because I own two small businesses and I will be paying for alot of people to get a lot of welfare which is what his tax cuts amount two. There is no incentive for me to increase my businesses which are franchises because it will cost me a fortune in taxes. He still hasn’t said how his health plan will impact Medicaid and that is a concern for me with elderly parents.

I don’t really think people understand how LIBERAL Mr. Obama is.
They portray “centeredness” in order to get votes. It is the same
thing they did with the Clintons (ie, hey let’s make them look more
moderate and cover up how LEFTIST they really are).

If there is one thing the Dems have learned: Liberalism s_cks and
the American people won’t support it. Mondale, Dukakis and
Kerry were expensive lessons.

My parting comment: the media bias in favor of Obama is deplorable.
MSDNC and the others should be ashamed.

Everybody makes mistakes including McCain but I know for an absolute fact that when I VOTE FOR McCAIN I am voting for someone, without question, who loves and is highly commitment to AMERICA. McCain has shown time after time he puts AMERICA FIRST in everything he does. He always puts AMERICA’S best interest first. Whereas look at obama’s record. ???? Are the Republican’s just that good at making this stuff up? Probably so but we don’t have to because obama continues to make bad decisions that make you question his love for America and just where he wants to take us. So why does he do it? I would truly like to think it’s his inexperience and/or poor judgment as opposed to something else that may be hidden, but not too deep, inside him. Look all you obamao-zoms a true leader doesn’t like to make the hard decisions but they make them anyway. Look how many times obama voted present or didn’t vote at all as a Senator. This is no leader, you’ve got to make a stand. It’s funny but many times when obama did make a stand, he seemed to change his mind when it became a negative for his career advancement. That’s just sad.

Well sorry McSame there’s no restart button, Get real….reality versus fiction. McSame is too old school.
Reminds me of some mean ole man that shouts out his door and says get off my lawn!
I bet both McSame and McFailin if they were on the TV show “Are you Smarter than a 5th Grader”
They would both lose that one lol
Interesting the rest of the world supports Obama very highly!
Sorry can’t vote Republican this time—-they can run a good campaign but can’t run countries.
All mouth, and they don’t put their money where their mouth is?
Uh the last 8 yrs were well what do you think just pure incompetence! Thanks Bush and your clowns who ruined this nation

OK Fox fans. There’s a liberal-conservative continuum in government and a good-bad continuum. What we’ve had for the last 8 years is a bad conservative government and we are now trillions poorer because of it. I think we’re choosing between good liberal government in Obama and bad conservative government in McCain, based on how they’ve run their campaigns and the intellect and temperament of the candidates. I’ll choose Obama any day.

Don’t come back to Virginia Beach, VA McCain & Palin. We don’t want you here. You will do nothing but keep us at war and in financial trouble. We are tried of your kind of low class politics. Stay away from Virginia. We belong to the Barrack Obama Campaign, not yours.”

LOL, but they ARE going to Virginia beach! Probably two more rallies. And the last rally in Newport News was PACKED!
Nice try tho, but out of reality.
It’s called LaLaLand in case you are missing the point.

McCain can keep shifting in his seat and saying different things, but the fact is he represents old, jingoistic, regressive ideas in a country that needs someone who is really ready to deal with problems on a global scale by becoming part of the global community.

This is where Obama stands out.

Palin? You have got to be kidding…
