McCain-Palin Camp Respond to Alaska Panel Finding

The McCain-Palin Campaign have just released a response to the Alaska ethics panel finding.

ARLINGTON, VA — McCain-Palin 2008 spokeswoman Meg Stapleton issued the following statement on today’s release of Stephen Branchflower’s report:

“Today’s report shows that the Governor acted within her proper and lawful authority in the reassignment of Walt Monegan. The report also illustrates what we’ve known all along: this was a partisan led inquiry run by Obama supporters and the Palins were completely justified in their concern regarding Trooper Wooten given his violent and rogue behavior. Lacking evidence to support the original Monegan allegation, the Legislative Council seriously overreached, making a tortured argument to find fault without basis in law or fact. The Governor is looking forward to cooperating with the Personnel Board and continuing her conversation with the American people regarding the important issues facing the country.”

There are two interesting statements in this quote:
1. While the Palin did have the right to fire Wooten, she did not have the right to allow her husband access to the Governor’s office and its records in order to get information to contact officials in order to pursuade them to fire Wooten. She knew this went on and did not stop it.
2. This was a bi-partisan group of Alaskan legislaters with Republicans and Democrats that both signed off. So, the McCain campaing is directly lying when it says that it was that the inquiry was partisan and lead by Obama supporters.

Palin is as bad of a pick for VP as Obama is for PRES!!! Both are related to radical, extremist, dishonest groups of people and have shown that they have poor judgment. I think that everyone on both tickets stink except for Joe Biden. Lets start over and choose the BEST candidates, not the most popular. Remember, they are NOT the same thing.

This ruling does surprise me…it has trashed the Mccain/palin ticket, and i am sure that partisan politics did play a role in this…its almost undeniable. Doesn’t mean she isn’t somewhat guilty. The problem is she will be ripped apart for this, and Obama will sit on a throne in Washington not having to face the consequences for associating with domestic terrorists because Americans are failing to properly vet him. We want a savior so bad that we make people into something they are not to make ourselves feel better. In the end it is all an illusion.

10 republicans on the panel 4 democrats this started long before we heard of lipstick palin or the inquiry and its obamas fault oh and his fault that some crazies were running around in the sixties when he was at his grandmas house now can i be a republican i think i got it

Comment by Winston Smith

As a Democrat, I’d just like to thank the short-sighted neo-conservative wing of the Republican Party. Without you, none of this would be possible. The un-vetted, in-experienced moose hunter from Alaska, the Republican party’s best and brightest shining star, has delivered the knock-out blow to her own party.

It was brilliant, I must admit when Karl Rove vetoed John McCain’s wishes for his Vice Presidential pick. Rove knew that American’s wanted a fire-breathing divider, a lipsticked PIG to smear the good names of patriotic Americans. Rove knew that what this country needed most was DIVISION. Forget about healing and bringing the country together! In tough times we need a VP who will question the patriotism of a brilliant US senator! We need to divide the country and continue the immoral policies of the neo-conservative (National Socialist) criminals who have all but destroyed this country. We need a VP who will give unlimited interviews to FOXNews and stir up the flames of racism, fear, and doubt. Karl Rove knew what was best, but he didn’t count on millions of patriotic Americans who stand up to lies, see through slander, and care enough about this country to reject the entire flawed and illogical philosophies of today’s Republican Party.

In closing, I’d just like to quote something from the bi-partisan report issued this evening:

“Sarah Palin unlawfully abused her power as governor… Palin in violation of a state ethics law.”

A political motivated investigation. No sanctions or criminal charges tells me they did not have a case. Democrats will stoop to anything

Comment by Jerry Ranson

I disagree that Palin is a bad pick for VP. I’m more concerned with Obama’s ties to radical groups and possible voter registration fraud than whether or not Gov. Palin wanted a bad apple fired.

Comment by Brickhouse

Mountain out of a mole hill. Since Governor Palin appointed Wooten to the position, she was/is totally within her right to ask him to serve in a new position, which he refused. There IS evidence that Wooten was insubordinate and purposely disobeyed the Governor behind her back. He deserved to be fired, but instead she cut him a break and wanted to reassign him.

GOV Palin did the RIGHT thing - this cop is bad - and needs to go! If anything, GOV Palin is more credible - and voters will Rally to her. There is NO crime here!
The real DISGRACE is Voter FRAUD - ALL Americans should be outraged with ACORN.
What is obama’s connection to this corrupt gang??????

Comment by Glen

This is such a poor response. Either they can’t read English, or the didn’t expect this to happen. Palin will cost McCain any chance at this presidency.

Comment by Kris

More SMEAR for GOV Palin! Who Cares??? - the cop is bad - get rid of him!
I am very concerned about obama’s radical associates - who are these corrupt guys - WHY does he even know these types. ACORN - Voter FRAUD, Ayres, Rezko, Raines - ALL corrupt Chicago sleeze. Is this really the BEST guy the DEMS could select????
Where is HILLARY???

Comment by Brickhouse

And in my humble opinion, I think Sarah Palin is a great choice for VP. Can’t wait for the 2012 election!

Comment by Not surprised

Saw it coming.

What a genius.

She abused power, she DID violate laws.

Maybe THIS is the October Surprise

I bet the Republicans aren’t snickering and laughing now, especially with John McCain saying he respects Obama.

Sorry, pugs.

Comment by Larry, Retired Air Force

As a life-long Democrat, I have always respectfully disagreed with many conservative philosophies. Yet, I have always admired the great intellect of some of them like William Buckley for example. If I were a republican, i would look at this turbulent elction year as a time to began to cleanse my party of the rift-raft people, who neither share or even understand the true conceptualization that define conservative politics. Their “base” has served them well for some time, but I just don’t see how a true educated conservative can be proud of someone like Sarah as their flag-bearer.

Comment by Jeff

This doesn’t surprise me in the least. I also believe that the ethics commitee was comprised of 10 Republicans and 4 Democrats, so I’m not sure why the McCaine spokeswoman is calling it biased.

This is big trouble for McCaine. I was personally considering voting for him until he picked Palin as his running mate. For someone who puts “country first”, I think he showed very poor judgement and very dissapointed in him.

Comment by irongrumma

if the cop is bad there was a right way doing this. they could him to court.call the cop went this happy. get a court order to stay from them.she did use her power.

THIS WAS NOT OBAMA SUPPORTERS…..10 REPUBLICANS AND ONLY 4 DEMOCRATS WERE IN THE PANEL>
WHAT IS HAPPENING TO OUR PARTY

Comment by Alan Blue

Why would this shock anyone. There was no real thought process put into the Repub VP pick. They grabbed someone in a skirt thinking it would grab the Hillary vote. Next time, think about someone worth backing for the second highest position in the world. Palin is a whack job that is a scary literal heartbeat away from having the codes for our nukes. Anyone that really thinks the Earth is only 6,000 years old and believes man walked along dinosaurs (yep, its true, look it up), scares the hell outta me. McCain’s decision process was horribly screwed up with this pick.

My favorite president was Reagan. My next favorite president will be Obama.

Comment by atlgirl

So that is news? Palin was within her legal authority. No doubt MSM will try to make that THE headline.

But MSM refuses to investigate and educate public on
a)Obama and his unseemly connections (spiritual advisor Wright, finance guy Rezko, mentor Ayers)
b)Obama/ACORN widespread voter fraud and the role played in Subprime mortgages that have led to global market meltdown
c)Obama/Iraqi discussions attempting to undermine a sitting President in a time of war (can you say treason?)
d)Obama illegal campaign donations from overseas

I heard tonight if Obama was applying for any Federal Government job with the above issues, he would not clear security clearance.
nice

Comment by Teddy

The people supporting Palin are completely blinded by partisanism. They are more concerned about the “associations” of Obama which every reputable news outlet have describes as tenuous at best. Yet when a bipartisan council made of more republicans than democrats find that Palin violated ethics laws, they don’t seem to care! Why do you hate Obama so much? Did he spit in your mother’s face or something?

Comment by dave

To Larry, How could you be proud of your flagbearer whose friend and associate stomped on it.

Comment by Josh

The problem here is that it has nothing to do with the Obama campaign attacking the GOP ticket, the legislative board is made up of ten republicans and only four democrats. The investigation was actually initiated by republicans. So I think we need to leave the finger pointing out of this. This has nothing to do with Obama. The question that is always raised is, “Who is the real Barack Obama?” Well who is the real Sarah Palin. When the GOP attacks Obama, and he responds in a like fashion thats one thing. But to blame Obama for something that he did not even have a part in is ridiculous and I am tired of the childishness. It’s time to grow up people. Start talking about how you are going to fix an economy that is responsible for people losing thousands in their investments. If the head of McCain’s campaign is going to make the statement that Palin is going to continue talking to Americans about the important issues than they must think that we are all stupid. Sharing character jabs back and forth between candidates is nothing new and it is nothing as important as our failing economy. One of many important issues. Don’t let McCain and Palin in office!!!!

Hello dumb foxxies This is certainly a placxe where you can beleive nothing thgat is officially posted on the page. It stinks like sulfur in here geee whizz.THE Alaskan prosecutor Branchflower says; “I conclude that such claims of fear were not bona fide and were offered to provide cover for the Palins’ real motivation: to get Trooper Wooten fired for personal family reasons,” Now if she would do this in a scarcley popoulated state what would she do if in higher office. Palin terrorized the tropper’s family and life by targeting his livelyhood, exactly what the 9/11 terrorist tried to do to all of us. PALIN IS A DOMESTIC TERRORIST !!!!!

Comment by Barbara

How can the McCain / Palin spokesperson say that the issue is driven by “Obama supporters” when the investigation began many months ago (before Palin was chosen as VP)? How can Ms. Stapelton make statements that are entirely false and guaranteed to ignite blame? I just got done watching the actual video of the announcement from the Alaskan Ethics Panel and the Panel spokesman clearly states the investigative group is objective and nonpartisan with both republicans and democrats in concensus…..

Comment by NorAnder238

This politically charged probe has been a media frenzy circus from the beginning. When Hollis French stated and published his “October surprise” comment, he tainted this whole process with his twisted version of revenge and partisan politics. It is about time this small, insignificant issue is swept aside for more important matters. If someone like Sarah Palin has the guts to seek the removal of corruption from their administration, then more power to them. This does not diminish Sarah Palin, in the least, but shows she has the concern and human a decency to stand up against corrupt practices and this only increases her stature in the eyes of her supporters. She is certainly qualified to serve as Vice President, if this small issue is the only thing her political enemies can find to throw at her.

You might want to check your facts on the land purchase.

“At the request of the Obamas, who were seeking a bit more space for their yard, she later sold them a 10-foot wide strip, or about one-sixth, of her land. The Obamas paid $104,500 for it, or about one-sixth of what Mrs. Rezko had paid for the entire property.”

Looks like this IS the October surprise.

So……..Obama fans, keep donating to the Obama defense fund.

All of this on top of shady associations (read as radicals and terrorists) and friends.

Well folks the Palin hate party is over. The “ethics” ruling was based on an assumption by
Branchflower and not based on fact. So the ruling was bogus. Palin on the other hand had every
right to fire Walt Monegan. So screw the media and the Acorn it rolled in on.

Comment by critical view

The release of Branchflower’s report shows how the Obama machine has operated, even in Alaska. One needs to know that Obama’s partisan has exerted dominant influence on this case. The investigation was not at all independent. Investigator Steven Branchflower admitted he had ceded control of his subpoena list to Sen. Hollis French (D.), who is a strong Obama supporter. It is really fearful that Obama’s dark current would soon sweep the whole US, just like the Red Guards terrorizing China during the Great Cultural Revolution.

Gov. Palin may have been within her legal rights to fire a subordinate, but abuse of power should concern everyone considering voting for the McCain/Palin ticket. I’m an Independent, but have finally had enough of Sarah Palin. She’s been touted as a maverick that cleaned up Alaska, and wants to clean up Washington. That just doesn’t wash for someone who committed ethical offenses on behalf of herself and her family. Nor does it make sense to try to brush it under the rug or blame it on bipartisan politics when the investigation started before she was picked as running mate, and when the commission is made up of significantly more Republicans than Democrats.

Are some of you folks reading the report or just the headlines? (1). She is not found of any criminal wrongdoing at all. (2). Please check into the record of the trooper in question. I have several friends who are ALaska State troopers and NONE of them would ever have such a record. In fact the AST is a very proud organization, with Honesty, Integrity, and Courage as their motto, above their shield. The men and women and I know, wear it with pride, and they live it in and out of uniform. The trooper in question has major issues, and his record bears that out. It is certainly true that Todd was given more leeway than he should have had, but for those of you who doin’t understand Alaska i can see that. It is important to remember the underlying cause of this dispute and ask yourself what would you be doing? Oh sure we can always be ant-Palin and say “string her up” but then there is Obama and Ayers, OBama and Wright, Obama and ACORN, and so it goes. Just remember in the Palin case there was a violent individual involved and he was representing the state. He needs to be gone!!!

You liberals and socialist democrats are nothing but a pack of jackals. Your media elevates Obama as your god and you all demonize anything conservative, Christian, Republican, sensible, moral, right, and ethical. You exist to elevate ungodly “rock stars” (Obama, your god without leadership or experience). Homosexuals, illegal aliens, terrorists, and welfare recipients love the promise Obama brings in defeating the right. Young historically and politically ignorant people (17-25) love Obama because he epitomizes rebellion against everything necessary. Many (not most) uneducated black Americans are only motivated by racism, proven in such remarks as “It’s our turn” or “It’s time for a black president”. You people (liberals/democrats) might succeed in sending our country to Hell (your final destination) through your propagandist media (which does NOT report news, but biased garbage). If this false prophet (your god Obama) somehow makes it as president, he will NOT do anything good for our country - NOTHING! Yet, you lying demons and your excremental media will continue to blame Republicans four or more years for your incompetence, immorality, and complete absence of leadership.

Fox is the just about only news service that doesn’t clearly state the key conclusion of the AK report: “Palin Abused Power.” Check the hundreds of articles on Google news “http://news.google.com/nwshp?hl=en&tab=wn&ncl=1255826864&topic=h”, which almost all include this phrase or a close subsitute. Instead the headline to this article is vacuous, a smokescreen: “McCain-Palin Camp Respond to Alaska Panel Finding.” Will the readers of this news service continue to blind themselves with willful self-deception. The truth is this news is _not_ good for Palin, and the fault is hers alone. Not the panel of 10 republicans and 4 democrats that voted unanimously to release the report. Not Obama’s.

Same Old Republican Dirty Tricks - One difference this time is that independent 3rd party finds them GUILTY.

Comment by eyesopen

Meg Stapleton must have been smoking crack when she read the report. I’ve just finishing reading every page and it clearly states Gov. Palin violated Alaska state law, both in her attempts at pressuring Monegan, and by her failure to prevent Todd Palin from his continous and never-ending pressuring of Monegan and other subordinates in her administration. And while it does say the Gov. “acted within her proper and lawful authority in the reassignment of Walt Monegan” is also says that Monegan’s failure to act they way they wanted, while not the sole factor in his firing, certainly contributed to his removal.

To her statement “Lacking evidence to support the original Monegan allegation, the Legislative Council seriously overreached, making a tortured argument to find fault without basis in law or fact”, the report is all about the evidence–at least the evidence available at the time as the interrogitories from the Gov. staff and Todd Palin weren’t provided until a few days before the report was due. Even without those statements, it’s pretty clear to see the pattern of undue influence for personal gain, which is a violation of Alaskan law for government employees.

As for Stapleton’s continued assertion “the report also illustrates what we’ve known all along: this was a partisan led inquiry run by Obama supporters” not only is this false, it’s shameful. Not one member of the Republican majority of the Legislative Council has indicted he or she feels this process was run by so-called “Obama supporters”. Not even the Republican gentleman from Wasilla, who flew in from his moose hunting trip and voted to issue the subpenoas, cast doubt on the legitimacy of the Legislature’s action.

Ms. Stapleton, the Gov., Todd Palin, the McCain campagin–you should all be ashamed at your blatent attempts to obsure, bend or outright break, the truth.

Please set me straight!

I know that this is a Conservative slanted base here so please enlighten me. I am very open minded and usually can see both sides of every issue. I dont consider myself Democratic but this time around I am leaning heavily towards Obama. Please note that Im not swayed by the negative personal attacks on either candidate since I believe both candidates as well as most polititians period can be linked to questionable behavior and that goes foe Obama, Biden, McCain and Palin. So in laymens terms and without getting personal or negative will one of you PLEASE tell me why I should cast my vote for McCain. Note that I’m not one of these that will benefit from tax cuts for the wealthy, in fact I like the idea that they should pay more and the middle class should get a break. Please give me the reason to be Consevative and is it based on race?

Ok, for the reading impaired:

There were TWO laws involved.

She WAS cleared of any wrong-doing in actually firing Monegan, since the Governor
has virtually unlimited authority to fire people. The press release above talks at great length about this, and many commenters here think this was the only law in question.

But she was NOT cleared with respect to the ethics violation that prohibits any government official from using their office for personal gain, and the press release does NOT refute the following legal finding, approved UNANIMOUSLY by the REPUBLICAN dominated legislative council:

Unfortunately for Sarah, being innocent of one charge is not an excuse for being guilty of the other. (”But officer, I was completely innocent of speeding before I ran over that hydrant!”) It’s over. She broke the law (surprise!). Get used to it.
