FOX NEWS POLL: OBAMA 46, McCAIN 39

From our Polls Dept:

10/10/08 FOX News Poll: Obama Maintains Lead Over McCain

Barack Obama leads John McCain by 46 percent to 39 percent, according to a FOX News national registered voter poll released Friday. Two weeks ago Obama led by 45 percent to 39 percent (September 22-23).

Obama’s advantage comes mainly from doing better among women, blacks, young voters, those with a college degree, and unmarried voters. He has increased his edge over McCain among women to 16 percentage points, up from a 4-point edge last month (September 8-9).

Obama has also improved his standing with his party faithful. A month ago, 79 percent of Democrats were backing Obama. Today it is 86 percent. McCain has consistently received the backing of over 80 percent of Republicans and is backed by 83 percent today.

Independents split their vote 34 percent Obama and 32 percent McCain, with 24 percent unsure. That’s little changed from two weeks ago when Obama was up by 36 percent to 31 percent and 29 percent undecided.

A 61 percent majority of voters believes Obama is going to win the election — more than three times as many as believe McCain will (18 percent). A month ago it was evenly divided: 41 percent Obama and 40 percent McCain (September 8-9). This summer, voters were more likely to say Obama would win: 51 percent Obama and 27 percent McCain (July 22-23).

All of the interviews for the poll were conducted after the town-hall style presidential debate held on Tuesday, October 7. Opinion Dynamics Corp. conducted the national telephone poll of 900 registered voters for FOX News from October 8 to October 9. The poll has a 3-point error margin.

There is no doubt the economy remains the single most important issue to voters this election. It is picked by 49 percent, which is more than all the other issues combined.

By 50 percent to 35 percent, Obama tops McCain as the candidate voters trust to handle the economy. Obama has the edge on all other issues tested save two — on handling the war on terrorism McCain is preferred by 14 points and on Iraq by 5 points.

The Obama-Biden ticket has a clear advantage on “having better judgment” (+ 7 points), “bringing the right change to Washington” (+ 15 points), “better understands American families and their problems” (+ 24 points). By a slim margin the Democratic ticket is also seen as better understanding “America’s importance in the world” (+ 3 points).

The McCain-Palin ticket has a significant edge on “having more experience” (+ 28 points).

What about the gut check question? If you had to make the toughest decision of your life, which candidate would you go to for advice? 42 percent say Obama and 41 percent McCain. That’s a significant shift from a month ago when 50 percent said they would go to McCain and 34 percent Obama (September 8-9).

Among independent voters: 37 percent say they would go to McCain for advice and 32 percent Obama and 22 percent say neither.

Interest in the Election and Enthusiasm for Voting

Identical majorities — 58 percent — of Democrats and Republicans say they are “extremely” interested in the presidential election. And roughly equal numbers of Obama supporters (86 percent) and McCain supporters (83 percent) say the outcome of the election matters “a great deal” to them.

Almost all of each candidate’s backers say they are certain of their support. Fully 89 percent of Obama’s supporters say they are certain to vote for him, up from 85 percent in August. There is matching conviction for the Republican candidate: 91 percent of McCain’s supporters describe their vote as certain, up from 86 percent in August.

In addition, a higher number of Democrats (62 percent) than Republicans (52 percent) say it is “extremely” important to them that their candidate wins. Similarly, Obama supporters (61 percent) are more likely to say it is “extremely” important to them that their candidate wins than McCain backers (49 percent).

Majorities of Obama supporters and McCain supporters say their vote is more a vote for their candidate than against the other candidate. Seventy-seven percent of Obama backers say they are voting for him rather than against McCain. Among McCain supporters, 65 percent say their vote is more for him than against Obama.

On the flip side, 28 percent of McCain backers describe their vote as being more against Obama. For Obama supporters, 17 percent say their vote is against McCain.

Importance of the Race and Age of the Candidates

Although many voters say race will not play a factor in their presidential vote decision, 45 percent say it will. Some 5 percent say the race of the candidates will be the “single most important factor” in deciding their vote, while 19 percent say it will be “one of several important factors” and another 21 percent say “a minor factor.”

A 52 percent majority says the race of the candidates will not be a factor “at all.”

Forty-seven percent of Obama supporters and 45 percent of McCain supporters say race will be a factor in their vote.

About 4 in 10 blacks (42 percent) and 4 in 10 whites (46 percent) say race will be a factor in deciding their vote. Among white voters who consider race a factor, 45 percent back McCain and 41 percent Obama. Almost all of the blacks who consider race a factor back Obama.

Six of 10 voters say the age of the candidates will play a factor in their vote. Here’s how it breaks down: 5 percent say age will be the “single most important factor,” 23 percent say “one of several important factors” and 32 percent say “a minor factor.”

Some 39 percent say the age of the candidates will not be a factor in choosing a candidate.

Bush and Congress Approval Hit New Lows

Most Americans give negative ratings to George W. Bush: 69 percent disapprove — nearly three times as many as the 25 percent who approve of the job he is doing as president. That’s the lowest approval rating Bush has received during his presidency.

Similarly, Congress gets its lowest rating ever, with just 13 percent assigning positive job marks, and 77 percent giving negative ratings.

I was undecided until the McCain campaign turned so nasty. Those folks are crazy — can’t imagine them in a position of power.

Comment by James McConnell

What I really want answers to is why no news service (especially Fox) is not reporting on this case in the “United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, BERG v. OBAMA Civil Action No: 08-cv-04083″, where Obama and the DNC keep stonewalling a ruling reguarding Obama’s status to Run for or hold office? US Citizenship is a question that must be answered before election time, whats everyone waiting for here?
Whats the deal, are all Fox News reporters afraid of this one, or has it just been swept aside, force the issue , make it public, put it in the faces of everyone and force a descision before its too late to matter.

Comment by Bryan

I don’t think that McCain people understand that nobody cares about these attack ads or swiftboat style politics. What people really care about is their 401K’s and other investments. With another Great Depression looming, the fact that someone hung out with a 70’s radical (which there were a lot of them) or if some radical guy calls him a Messiah (Obama didn’t call anyone or himself the Messiah)doesn’t matter to many people. Many people around the world are worried about their jobs, their money, and their financial security, not these personal attacks on someone. I think that if McCain progressively goes after the economy half as much as he’s gone after the character of Obama, then he might see a different sort of spike in numbers. People vote on their pocketbooks and that’s the brass tax of it all. The more personal attacks that McCain supplies the more people associate him with Bush…and that’s just the facts. I wonder now if he is hoping that he picked Romney, since his number have been decreasing with the economy as the main focus.

Comment by Liana Conlan

I am so mad that Americans can’t see through this communist Obama. His whole campaign crew and adivisors are thugs, cronies, thieves and radicals of all types. I have never seen such an underhanded campaign as that of Barack Obama. They all need to go to jail. I can’t believe is can even qualify for the presidency. I want to see a live Birth Certificate on him too. He is the only person who is supposedly born as a citizen that can’t seem to produce anything more than a digital copy on the internet. I can make one of those up. I want to see the real thing. He is the Anti-Christ we have been warned of in the bible if you ask me, and he is going to ruin our country if we let him. Please bring it to him on all levels and make him answer up to everything or step out of the race.

We’re on a train headed towards the Great Depression Part II and all I’m hearing from them is Ayers and Wright. Give me a break. This is the absolute worst ticket that has ever been trotted out there. I’m embarrassed. Really, I’m absolutely embarrassed.

Comment by Lisa

Can you hear it, listen closely. Its the sigh of relief for all true Americans that the followers of Bush, Lamebaugh, and the rest of the narrowminded backwoods puppets will not get another 4 years to completely bankrupt and destroy our America.

Comment by AG

We are screwed either way we vote. Each are promising things that will mostly likely NEVER happen. How can they keep promising these changes for the economy when the GREEDY US Government has put us Trillions of Dollars in debt. It’s time for us as the people to take a stand for ourselves and our country and not let ONE person makes choices for us. People need to take responsibilites for their actions.. and stop relying on the government to bail them out.

“Liberal Media Bias”????

This is a FOX NEWS POLL ! Fox conducted the Poll.

Stop the delusional ranting.

Comment by Mark

McCain is not Bush. Why would people rather elect a friend to terror who went to the ‘I hate the USA’ church and helped lead the charge into bankruptcy while taking cash himself candidate is beyond reason. Because of their blind hate for Bush? Media bias? What reason could there be in higher taxation in times like these? It’s just not logical.

Comment by Louise

It’s just as well - the GOP needs to do some serious house cleaning to rebuild itself.

Let the dems try to muddle their way through the next four years - at least if McCain loses they can’t blame the hellstorm that’s coming on us.

Comment by Fair and Biased

Fox keeps this type of reporting up and I may just be convinced they are fair and balanced. Wow, its refreshing and would be a great fulfillment if they did.

Comment by Kathy

Are you kidding me!!!! relief from the dems, lol they are the ones in charge right now , not Bush or your so called narrow minded backwoods puppets, so get a grip the election has not happened yet polls mean nothing , have you been polled yet????????????hope not.Put blame were it belongs with the very very liberal congress and house of reps, they have had 2 years now to ruin this country and it looks as if they have ( like they care they want to be a socialist country)

For undecideds 08

Comment by Mark

Why Obama? How’s about Barney Frank? Now there’s someone we could all follow. How about Bill Maher? He could lead us down faster, isn’t that the goal now, to sink America as fast as possible? How can you justify that the Republicans have sunk the economy when they were waving red flags the Democrats fought? Obama should be in front of the parole board, not the nation running for president, by popular vote!? Where are your minds?

Comment by Angela

I can’t believe that Fox reported this. I was expected to see headlines such as “Palin: Obama ya betch “don’t” get it” ~~ McCain: Obama Not Ready to Lead” ~~ “Obama: Ayers is my BBF” ~~

Comment by Wright

The Sun Times today gave a major clue that Barack Obama will indeed go down with Tony Rezko, sooner rather than later. It looks as though Rezko is about to turn on Alexi Giannoulias, the 30-year old State Treasurer of Illinois (who was elected only because Obama backed him). Here’s where all the clues are…and then we’ll walk you through the local Chicago politics on how today’s hint by the Sun Times has us convinced, for the first time ever, that prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald could indeed send Barack Obama to jail.We need to repeat that: we never believed, until now, that Obama would go to jail for anything related to Rezko. Today, this breaking news about what Rezko is singing to the Feds about makes us reconsider all of that.Barack Obama will serve a prison sentence in the next few years — because knowing Fitzgerald, there is no reason he would be going through all of this if that was not the targeted goal in the long term.

Comment by john

All these polls are great! I hope the polls make the pro-obama people think that they don’t need to vote as their candidate is winning and sit at home on election day because the real americans will go out and make sure the white house does not become the black’s house.

Comment by Ojamas

PLEASE, take a breath and look at the kind of people that are showing up a rallies and supporting these candidates. It’s plain what kind of people they attract. Leaders attract like-minded individuals. Do we want to continue a national climate of hate and fear or one of hope and unity? The choice is clear. Ojamas

It is absolutely amazing to me that there are so many people unable to think for themselves. If there is one thing that I have learned over the years it is that there is no such thing as coincidence. If it looks, walks, and quacks like a duck it is probably a duck.

As an ardent patriot I was encouraged when I first heard Sen. Obama speak but as the months have ticked away he has proven to be no different than the rest. As a successful business owner and having worked in DC, I can tell you that the last thing we need is to give the government more money so that it can increase its size to “solve America’s problems.” If American’s really knew how inept the federal government truly is when it comes to managing the various departments let alone its finances, the cries for revolution would be heard from coast to coast.

If Sen. Obama was truly interested in change he would start by proposing sweeping reforms across all departments in the federal government; reforms that include metrics for measuring both the efficiency and effectiveness of every government program, and thus holding directors accountable for their performance. The United States can no longer afford government employees placed into positions of responsibility that did not have the proper qualifications or experience in the first place, nor should government workers be allowed to simply move from one position to another due to failures in performance. Accountability starts at the top, and the election of Sen. Obama as President would both perpetuate and accentuate the plague of incompetence that oozes from every crack in the federal government.

Stop drinking the Kool Aid and think for yourselves. Change is no longer some political buzz word that can be thrown around like an old shoe.

The Obama-Biden campaign blames the falling stock market and frozen credit system on the Republican philosophy of deregulation. Are the Republicans responsible for the other world markets tanking as well? All the world markets have lost historic amounts this past week and the best the Democrats can come up with is “the Republicans did this”?

Comment by CM

The only thing I am embarrassed about is that people, some of them smart people, are willing to trust a man who knows what to say but has never done anything to prove he can actually do what he says, and whose promises are not feasible, especially with the financial situation of our country, to save our economy. A man whose political career started at the house of one of the worst domestic terrorists in history, and whose views have not changed of his acts. A man whose spiritual adviser says Israel should be destroyed, supports Palestine, and preaches for genocide of the white race, and who hates the USA. A man whose major supporters are some of the worst people, not only in this country, but in the world. While he spoon feeds you a bunch of promises he can’t keep (and probably wouldn’t even know how if he could), our foundations erode. What kind of example are we setting when we elect a two-faced, disloyal (he turned his back at everyone that ever made him who he is today), incompetent (is the South-side of Chicago that much better?), inexperienced (has he ever held ANY administrative position?), populist as the president of the greatest nation on earth? Well, I guess we just don’t check the voting records, that show when he did vote, what he says is not what he does. Or we say that his alliances (because they are not just mere associations) to the wost people in our country are not important. Or we just like being led on and used as tools simply because he is a Democrat and it was during a Republican government that the economy failed (yes, Bush sucked, but it was mostly the Democratic legislature that caused this mess, and that is a fact) we feel we need change. We should be careful with what we wish for. We may get it. Change isn’t always for the better. For the better is McCain. Acorn Obama should not even be allowed to run! He is simply NOT the change we need. He CANNOT and WILL NOT be able to fulfill his promises, and he LIES a LOT! But maybe all of you who say what you say about the McCain/Palin ticket deserve an Obamanation. It is you, the middle class and the lower class, who will suffer the most with his government. 95% tax cut for the middle-class…HA! Only if he borrows money from China with all the extra money he plans on spending.

For the love of the United States of America and the security of the nation, I would like America to ask OBAMA this simple question:
If the war between the United States of America and Kenya is inevitable, is OBAMA willing to bomb Kenya, where his uncle and relatives live in, like he said without hesitation to bomb Pakistan?

Obama said we deserve the same insurance coverage as John McCain and he have enjoyed in the Senate I agree we as the American taxpayers have paid for their coverage we should have the same benefits with out worry about the profits of the insurance companies and the insurance companies making your medical decisions based on the bottom line not on the medical outcome of your life.
