McCain drops Ayers bomb

MILWAUKEE, WI — The McCain campaign is not putting a new hard-hitting 90-second web ad slamming Obama for his relationship with former domestic terrorist Bill Ayers up on TV yet but that probably doesn’t make a difference. The video is sure to be the political topic du jour on Thursday and is already heating up the morning shows.

The spot introduces Ayers’ past as a member of the Weather Underground and his interactions with Obama but says the bigger issue is the Democratic nominee’s candor.

“We know Bill Ayers ran the “violent left wing activist group” called Weather Underground. We know Ayers’ wife was on the FBI’s 10 Most Wanted list. We know they bombed the Capitol. The Pentagon. A judge’s home. We know Ayers said, ‘I don’t regret setting bombs. …. I feel we didn’t do enough,’” a narrator intones. “But Obama’s friendship with terrorist Ayers isn’t the issue. The issue is Barack Obama’s judgment and candor. When Obama just says, ‘This is a guy who lives in my neighborhood.’ Americans say, ‘Where’s the truth, Barack?’ Barack Obama. Too risky for America.”

McCain campaign adviser Nicolle Wallace appeared on a number of morning shows today to argue that Obama’s lack of openness on Ayers raises questions about his veracity on other policy issues, acknowledging that Americans “don’t care about a washed-up terrorist.”

“The point of this ad is that Barack Obama, when asked about his association with Mr. Ayers, was less then truthful. He called him a guy in his neighborhood. Now the truth is he is somebody who Barack Obama launched his political career with at a coffee in his living room,” Wallace said on Fox and Friends this morning. “The point here is if you don’t tell the truth about your associations, how can you be trusted to tell the truth to the American people about your plan for raising taxes, about your plans for ending the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, about your plans for health insurance? How can we trust you if you don’t tell a simple truth about who the guy in your neighborhood really is?”

She added, “I think John McCain is someone who always tells the truth and lets the chips fall where they may. Barack Obama always polishes the truth puts the best spin on the facts and hopes that it will serve his political ambitions.”

It’s not about candor, it’s about how the McCain camp uses guilt by association to avoid any real issues. It’s the same B.S. Bush used in 2004, 2000. Aren’t people tired of this yet?

Comment by Scott

It’s disingenuous of you to not note the connection between the McCain campaign and the Annenbergs. ‘Radical’, indeed.
Please change your tenor sir - this is not how you want to be remembered, Senator McCain.

I’m grateful when any of the “mysteries” about Barak Obama are repeatedly brought to the awareness of all of us. Unfortunately not everyone is able to get Fox News. Is there someway that you guys can help correct this?

I don’t understand how a person with the unbridled ambition exhibited by Obama can not be seen as the dangerous OPPORTUNIST he is. He has not “payed his dues” and therefore not gained the wisdom that comes from experience and adversity that is so necessary for leadership; both McCain and Palin have. Being “charming” has served Obama well politically, but “charm” is no teacher of wisdom. I cannot help but wonder that if he assumes a position of power (i.e. President) his leadership will be “opportunistic” also…and that coupled with his “entitlement” attitude could lead our nation down a dangerous path (nationally and internationally) that would take years to correct…….which we would because the heart of this Nation knows what it is about…….it’s “stinky-thinkin” that gets us in trouble.

Is the McCain campaign now taking cues from the Huckabee campaign? “I was going to run this ad, but I decided against it. However, let me show you what you won’t see.”

bama rose too fast and when one views all his past associations, one begins to wonder whether Obama has a hidden agenda for America. Maybe, The United Socialists States of America?

McCain telling the truth……ughhhh! Don’t think so. When will they loose the Ayers mantra - it is not working - hasn’t worked in the past….which is what it is…..long gone past. Instead of talking about the economy and their plan to get US out of our mess - they talk about Ayers. There are many skeletons in both closets - politicans don’t get to where they are by being squeaky clean and any politican that tries to claim that is the one that is untrustworthy. And any politican that has to reach back more than 20 years to find “associations” is sinking pretty low.

Let’s talk about real issues not “associations” - Obama is taking the high road and sticking to the issues - only defending himself when the McCain campaign continues to focus on the past instead of on the future.

Bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb McCain.

Comment by mike

how long will McCain camp continue to bring up points that have been proven false. Yes there is an association, but the details in this are VERY misleading. I belies that McCain and palin are trying a whole new type of scare tactics this year. Typically it’s used in a way to make people believe that they are strong and can protect. This time they are using it very dangerously and trying to scare people not about being protected but to be fearful of Barack himself. Their language is very strong and all but accusing Obama of being a terrorists himself. Not to mention the two do not correct their followers when it is clear that thy are yelling out horrible things about Obama when these issues come up.

Disgusting!! Playing on fears just like George Bush. Now tell me, how is McCain different than Karl rove/George Bush. The Maverick is dead–John McSame is born!!

LOL-Nice WMD(Weapon of Mass Distraction)

but the wind get’s knocked out of it when people find out Obama was 7 years old when that happened.

Next WMD-”Why didn’t 7 year old Obama defuse the Bomb?”

Comment by Saxxon Domela

It is sad to see John resort to this type of tactic. We’re real people, with real problems, and we need to have someone who is engaged in finding real solutions. This garbage about something that happened when Obama was nine years old is stupid. John, tell us solutions, not recycled smear.

Comment by Sandy

It is attacks like this that turn Americans off.
We just will not vote for people that frankly we wouldn’t want as friends because they are so negative and full of “got cha” moments.

McCain needs to take a few lessons from Bill Clinton.

Comment by Brad

Fair game. Too many of the young voters especially are getting their news from sources like MTV and other blatantly left leaning sources who have downplayed this friendship. There is nothing to downplay. Barack Obama is friends with at least one terrorist, and that is a major cause for concern.

Comment by Early Man

If this is a bomb (relative to our economy that is cratering), then I have serious doubts about Admiral McCain’s expertise on munitions.

Comment by Katie

As an educated person, I’m wondering to myself, “If the McCain campaign has the truth about Obama’s and Ayers’ relationship, why aren’t they airing it?” IT IS BECAUSE OBAMA HAS TOLD US THE TRUTH….he has been open and honest with this since day one of his campaign. There isn’t anything else to tell. I am amazed that the McCain campaign is spending donated money to run these stupid ads that will only appeal to and be believed by stupid people.

Obama/Biden!!!!!

Comment by Elizabeth Jurenovich

McCain didn’t “drop Ayers bomb”, he is bombing his own credibility and demonstrating his desperation in making these senseless political attacks. Obama was 8 when Ayers made his youthful mistakes; to make terrorist-by-association allegations is Republican terrorism at its most shameful depth! And for Fox News to apply a sensationalistic headine to this story in order to pimp it for maximum exposure is likewise nauseating.

Comment by NK

The McCain campaign has become a national joke. In the midst of the largest economic crisis since 1932, Sarah Palin, Cindy McCain and John McCain have decided to spend their campaign finances on attack ads and vitriol. It’s pathetic and exactly how George Bush divided the country (and unfairly destroyed McCain) in 2000 and 2004.

Comment by amelia

She added, “I think John McCain is someone who always tells the truth and lets the chips fall where they may.

“She” is Michelle Wallace, another campaign advisor for John McCain, didn’t mention that the number one reason they’re not airing that ad is because Leonora Annenberg (a long time McCain supporter) is on that same board as Obama and Ayers. People could argue that even McCain himself has associations with Ayers because of his long term support from Annenberg. So I guess, McCain is sorta letting the chips fall where they may because he’s truly throwing the Honorable Leonara Annenberg under the bus in this as well. He just doesn’t care who he runs over for the race to the White House just as long as he gets there.

Comment by hap

When will the nonsense stop…..judge these men by who they are not by who they know…better yet, how about judging then by their actions - or perhaps not judging them at all.

Comment by Mary

Please. If we’re going to talk about being a liar, John McCain takes the cake. It’s amazing how you republicans always project your crimes outward onto others. The American people, finally, aren’t buying it.

thank you john mccain for telling us the truth. It takes a man of honor and dignity to admit that you’ll give $70K additional in tax cuts to the richest so my $50K a year family can save less than $100 during an economic crisis. I can’t wait to apply for that $20K job he’ll create as a result.

Thank you.

How about discussing McCain’s temper—why is McCain called “Senator Hothead?”
How about finding out why McCain graduated at the BOTTOM of his class?

Comment by David

Their point is dead on. How can this guy be trusted. Now Obama’s campaign is coming out saying that Obama didn’t know his past when he first started dealing with Ayers. Which is a downright lie. And if it wasn’t, that implies to me he’s too stupid to know or just plainly doesn’t care to know who he’s dealing with.

I for one am hoping Rezko cracks and gives the Feds the real deal on Obama’s dealing with him.

this is stupid. all mccain has left are ads like these because hes getting smoked when it boils down to real issues. mccain is desperate, and the polls show that the rest of america can see that too..

Does John McCain tell the truth about his personally shutting down the congressional inquiry into missing American POW’s in Viet Nam?

Does John McCain tell the truth about his personally giving his North Vietnamese captors the flight vectors and coordinates for U.S. bombing runs?

Is it riskier to have a president who briefly associated with a one-time violent social activist or one who does not come clean about his traitorous conduct?

Swift boat ads times 10 , desperate times 10!!!! Cheap shot & even Republicans can see through this weak association with domestic terrorist from 1970 . No Credibillity at all

Comment by Marlon Tidwell

You know this getting ridiculous, So obama has an association with a domestic terriost, what about McCain serving and working alongside people with virulent bigoted pasts like Sens. Jesse Helms, Strom Thurmond and Robert Byrd?
Thurmond ran for president as a Dixiecrat in 1948 with a platform of maintaining segregation. Based on Helms’ policies, he didn’t see blacks as full Americans. Bombing the Pentagon is horrible and indefensible. But declaring yourself a patriot while you speak such hateful and venomous words against your own countrymen, who just happen to be black, and then trying to oppress them, is just as indefensible So, did McCain work with them? Did he not speak with them? Should McCain have declared that he would not work alongside these men because of their past? Should the self-described maverick who believes in integrity and character have taken the honorable stance of resigning from the Senate to protest these hateful characters serving in the U.S. Senate?
No. And this is why this association argument is so weak and impotent. Byrd was once a member of the Ku Klux Klan, a domestic terrorist organization Most of this is quoted from Roland Martin and it is the truth so let that go lets get to the issue.

Comment by Chris Troy

Sleazy, McCain. Guess you must have been having a senior moment when you approved this “twist” on facts.

Comment by Rebecca Ratliff

Obama claims that he had no idea who Ayers was, meaning his past terrorist activities. He worked with Ayers for years, he had a formal political party with Ayers, he traded ideas and funding for those ideas for years with Ayers, his children went to school with the children of Ayers, he lives in the same neighborhood with Ayers. And still, he had no idea who Ayers was in terms of his gruesome and historic past.

Since Ayers’ horrific activities has been televised, in magazines, in the newspapers etc. and Obama had no idea who he was, how in the world can we trust him to recognize terrorists in other countries and deal with them?

Even now that the entire nation is pointing and telling him that “your buddy is a terrorist” he still is as unrepenting as Ayers is in regards to their relationship.

And one more thought, if I ever had the chance to ask Obama one question, I would ask “what is the motivation behind making and keeping all of these relationships with some of the most unsavory people in this nation?”

Even a racist should stop and think; do you really want a president that violated the military Code of Conduct? I know I don’t. That is why I’ll be voting for Obama.

Comment by Martin McCormick

Obama has been through over 20 months of intense scrutiny during a primary–isn’t it a little weird that now–all of a sudden–he’s “pallin’ around” with terrorists?

The sad thing is that some people won’t even investigate the claim.

FOX should be ashamed for even repeating this McCain campaign garbage. This is just sad.

Comment by Jeff Jones

Fox News is a surrogate for the Republicans. McCain is clearly desperate and has stooped to new lows. Go back and see what he said about negative campaigns early on. Well now that he can’t win on issues he figures maybe I can win if I can scare people away from Obama. McCain is a flip flopper of the grandest proportions. If you want more of what we’ve seen over the last eight years “My friends” vote 10 times for McCain. I am a conservative but I’m not a fool. The republican party is a failed party with nothing left in their bag of tricks but the politics of fear. Really it’s no different than other governments we criticize. They give their masses something to be frightful of to keep them distracted, focused on the wrong thing and meanwhile they’re living high off the hog selling off the middle class and the American dream. They tell you to be afraid of everything and meanwhile we’ll continue sucking the life out of America’s middle class. America is a capitalistic society and the consumer drives our economy. No matter how many widgets we make without consumers to buy them we’re done. Wake up Americans. Say “Enough!” as loud as you can!

What about John McCain’s first wife and family he dumped for Cindy McCain after his first wife stood by him when he was a POW. In fact when John first met Cindy he was 42 and she was 24 and lied about his age to make himself -which John laughs about now. That is a story about the candidate himself not people he met - why dont you follow up on that!

I from a personal standpoint, since I was in the Pentagon when the explosion took place would like

John McCain is somebody who always tells the truth….EXCEPT FOR WHEN HE LIES.
First to his wife then over many years to the American people. He wants regulation except for the fact that he has spent his life fighting regulation, his health plan will help Americans except for the fact that more people than ever before will be without health insurance; he doesn’t like to talk about his time as a POW, except for the fact that he or Palin bring it up at every rally and public appearance as if that gives him the right to be president; he and his campaign say BO voted against giving military equipment they need, he fails to mention he also voted against a similar bill (dishonest); he continues to make statements at his rallies and debates that have proven over and over again to be lies by factcheck.org; he suspended his campaign EXCEPT that he didn’t; he says he will fight against special favors to people in government EXCEPT for the fact that his own campaign is filled with lobbyists and his top finance person was receiving 15000 a month until the take over to perform NO service…hmm sounds like a bribe to get close to McCain.
Oh wait I get it, by calling the other candidate a liar, he hopes the people of this great country don’t see his lies, his incompetence and his poor judgement. He lies, his wife lies, his vp pick lies.
In her short time in office, his vp pick is already under investigation. Honesty is not a word McCain should utter. At his rallies, he now has people shout out ugly scary comments as he stands on stage smiling. HONESTY, SOMETHING MCCAIN KNOWS NOTHING ABOUT!

Comment by JennyO

What is the point of this story? That Obama has attended meetings with someone who acted dumb in his youth? Who now is trying to serve the people and children of Chicago? Where’s the news here? And why can’t McCain spend any time talking about why I should vote FOR him? Instead of just against Obama? What a loser McCain has turned out to be…

Comment by Martin, GA

Don’t vote for McCain, he has the same flawed character as John Edwards He is egocentric man who cheated on his disabled wife to divorce her for a wealthy woman. He even lied to his wife about his age and that he is separated while he was still living with his wife. And there were rumors he even cheated on her with a lobbyist Vicki Iseman. Once a cheater always a cheater so not surprisingly he was involved in the Keating Five scandal.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obama%E2%80%93Ayers_controversy has actual facts about this story. Given that Obama was 8 years old at the time of Weathermen bombings, and that he has condemned such bombings, I don’t see what relevance it has that he has worked with Bill Ayers 40 years later.

television is a wonderful tool for manipulating public opinion. it is our duty, as citizens of this great (but ailing) country to think clearly and judge fairly. i remember when it was america’s destiny to lead the world as a shining beacon of hope. what do we do nowadays? run roughshod over every little guy, both here and abroad. the middle class is in danger. i fear that a few very rich people, seeking their own self-interest, have hijacked the country. i know gwb thinks that to make an omelette you gotta break eggs, but sometimes, you just get a bunch of broken eggs. are you and i simply eggs, to be gathered and consumed like so many statistical objects? personally, i say vote them all out and let the local governments take care of it. but i’m just one old conservative. everybody wants to be rich. what if we’re just gambling the future and gobbling up the earth? if these thieves are what the republican party has turned into, i fear for all of us. god bless our children, they’ll need a miracle.

A campaign based on fear of “others” in a time of global economic crisis. An appeal to blatant and unquestioning patriotism. An over emphasis on the role of the miliatary in a civil society. Brought by a military man (an unsuccessful one at that) from a previous war. Sound like 1930’s Nazi Germany. You betcha!

God help us.

There is a lot of under the surface anger in the white community. As the obama administration goes forward I’m sure it will insite a large violent reaction from that group of people. He is a very dangerous choice at this time in our nations history. Why don’t someone at FOX do a story on the under the surface anger, and you’ll see I’m right about this. People are at the breaking point. I’m telling you something is going to get broken. Washington is a den of vipers and thieves. We need to clear Washington, and move the nations capital to a small town in middle America. We can use all the monuments as a museum of how not to do things anymore.

Americans have had enough. Obama will push this anger over the edge. He’s not going to like the result.

He’s not even American.

Who really cares about what Obama did 20 years ago? Isn’t it McCain who says that Obama “looks to the past” too much … when Obama refers the past 8 years? Rather hypocritical, isn’t it?
This is more of the diversionary, ‘red herring’ politics that has made America, Inc look like dumb & drunk on the world stage for the past 8 years.
We’re lucky that an intelligent, impassioned younger man like Obama even wants the job of President — given the mess that Congress & Bush have made of the federal budget & tattered U.S. legacy. Obama lies less than Bush, Cheney, & Rumsfeld and will probably spend less federal money and ring up fewer deficits because he’s not an adrenaline-seeking, military buff bent on carving his mark in Military History by using the US Taxpayer as his blank check.
Obama is best positioned to restore some dignity to the American mission. He’s not trigger-happy and erratic like McCain, who is a walking Adult ADHD case if ever I’ve seen one.
Granted that McCain is sincere in many ways … but … McCain exhibits all the self-discipline and executive direction of a “Drunk Driver”. This is more scary than a man who rubbed shoulders with a radical decades ago. Come on. Let’s get real. Stop making up issues when we’ve got the real to deal with.

How many living rooms, offices or clubs did McCain have meetings with Charles Keating in?
McCain got off light on that one because the nation viewed him as a war hero. McCain is tarnishing his image with these attacks. He has become a “desperate husband” and desperate candidate who is completely out of credibility. He certainly does not look like a hero now.

Comment by Big John

Bad judgment for Obama to know somebody who attacked the government 40 years ago? Probably. Bad judgment for McCain to choose a running mate who recently gave welcoming speeches to a political party seeking to have Alaska secede from the United States, and whose own husband belonged to that party from 1995-2002? Far, far worse.

Comment by Deb Bruce

Tell the truth, Senator Obama. Here’s what we need to know in “four point” debate style:

First, who is William Ayers to you?

Second, what is your relationship with William Ayers wife who was on the FBI’s 10 Most Wanted List? We’ve never had a president who was FRIENDS with people on the FBI’s 10 Most Wanted List–not in my lifetime.

Third, when’s the last time you spoke with William Ayers? Can we see your cell phone records to prove it?

Lastly, we’re nervous. How can we trust you on anything –healthcare, the economy, international relations and policies –with all the new and disturbing information forthcoming on your friendships and dealings with Ayers and other terrorist-type individuals? We are very nervous.

I think that the American people need to really examine the charter of Mr. Obama. If he tries to hide his past associations by not being truthful about them how can we trust his campaign promises. If you look into Obama’s past there are times in his life for which there is very little information available. Contrast that to Mr. McCain’s past that reads like an open book. I think we need honest truthful candidates. With the unsettled world condition and our nation’s financial mess we need a president that we can trust to be honest and strait forward.

mccain should do the simplest way. put all these radicals in one video. identify each one of them.
ayers - obama funded his radical teachings for 50 millions taxpayers money. rezko - helped obama to purchase his house. pastor wright and father phleger - a radical pastor who hates america, and served as the mentor of obama throughtout his chicago politics. acorn - an organization that obama has defended on the illegal activities of election frauds. obama is a very intelligent man, got a degree in harvard. now pretends he is stupid not to know the activities of all these people. mccain, should say “what role, and influence these people to obama’s presidency”. america will decide.
