Obama Camp Calls Palin’s Attack “Desperate”

ASHEVILLE, NC - Today’s New York Times ran a front page story on Obama’s “crossed paths” with William Ayers, a 1960s radical who used to detonate bombs to protest Vietnam, clearly catching the attention of the GOP ticket.

Although the Times couldn’t come up with much linking Obama and Ayers, it didn’t stop John McCain’s “pit bull” from dropping a bomb of an attack today - exactly one month before the election.

Down in the polls, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin told donors in Colorado that Obama “is someone who sees America it seems as being so imperfect, imperfect enough that he’s palling around with terrorists who would target their own country.”

As Obama was in an airplane heading to Asheville, NC, for debate preparations, his campaign responded forcefully with a statement, calling Palin’s shot “desperate,” “false,” and a distraction from the nation’s economic ills.

Governor Palin’s comments, while offensive, are not surprising, given the McCain campaign’s statement this morning that they would be launching Swiftboat-like attacks in hopes of deflecting attention from the nation’s economic ills. In fact, the very newspaper story Governor Palin cited in hurling her shameless attack made clear that Senator Obama is not close to Bill Ayers, much less ‘pals,’ and that he has strongly condemned the despicable acts Ayers committed 40 years ago, when Obama was eight. What’s clear is that John McCain and Sarah Palin would rather spend their time tearing down Barack Obama than laying out a plan to build up our economy.

The campaign pointed to this morning’s Washington Post, which reported that the GOP was about to adopt a “fiercer” strategy against a surging Barack Obama as evidence of their assertion that the McCain camp was willing to use Swiftboat techniques to change the subject from the economy.

Read the full Obama - Biden campaign response below the jump.

Please see our reaction, below, to the desperate and false attacks made by Governor Palin in Colorado earlier today in an attempt, as her own campaign admits, to avoid talking about the economic challenges facing American families:

“Governor Palin’s comments, while offensive, are not surprising, given the McCain campaign’s statement this morning that they would be launching Swiftboat-like attacks in hopes of deflecting attention from the nation’s economic ills. In fact, the very newspaper story Governor Palin cited in hurling her shameless attack made clear that Senator Obama is not close to Bill Ayers, much less ‘pals,’ and that he has strongly condemned the despicable acts Ayers committed 40 years ago, when Obama was eight. What’s clear is that John McCain and Sarah Palin would rather spend their time tearing down Barack Obama than laying out a plan to build up our economy,” said Obama-Biden spokesman Hari Sevugan.

McCain Campaign Announced Today that They Would Take This Campaign into the Gutter. “We are looking for a very aggressive last 30 days,” said Greg Strimple, one of McCain’s top advisers. “We are looking forward to turning a page on this financial crisis and getting back to discussing Mr. Obama’s aggressively liberal record and how he will be too risky for Americans.” “We’re going to get a little tougher,” a senior Republican operative said, indicating that a fresh batch of television ads is coming. “We’ve got to question this guy’s associations. Very soon. There’s no question that we have to change the subject here,” said the operative, who was not authorized to discuss strategy and spoke on the condition of anonymity. [Washington Post, 10/04/08]

OBAMA AND AYERS RELATIONSHIP: “TENUOUS” “ABSURD” “PHONY” AND LACKING “EVIDENCE”

New York Times: A Review Of Records And Interviews Shows That Obama And Ayers “Do Not Appear To Have Been Close” And Obama Has Never Expressed Sympathy For The Radical Views Or Actions Of Ayers. A review of records of the schools project and interviews with a dozen people who know both men, suggest that Mr. Obama, 47, has played down his contacts with Mr. Ayers, 63. But the two men do not appear to have been close. Nor has Mr. Obama ever expressed sympathy for the radical views and actions of Mr. Ayers, whom he has called “somebody who engaged in detestable acts 40 years ago, when I was 8.” [New York Times, 10/3/08 <http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/04/us/politics/04ayers.html?_r=2&hp&oref=slogin&oref=slogin> ]

Time: Making An Issue Of Obama’s Relationship With Ayers And Dohrn Is “Absurd.” “Those have been the options in the debate. But the truth is a third option: Ayers and Dohrn are despicable, and yet making an issue of Obama’s relationship with them is absurd.” [Time, 5/29/08 <http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1810338,00.html> ]

Washington Post: Obama-Ayers Link “Is A Tenuous One.” The Washington Post reported in a fact check that “the Obama-Ayers link is a tenuous one.” [Washington Post <http://blog.washingtonpost.com/fact-checker/2008/02/obamas_weatherman_connection.html#more> , 2/18/08]

Chicago Sun Times: Obama’s Connection To Ayers Is A “Phony Flap”. The Chicago Sun-Times wrote in an editorial, “But Ayers, it is also true to say, has since followed in the footsteps of the great Chicago social worker Jane Addams, crusading for education and juvenile justice reform. His 1997 book, A Kind and Just Parent: The Children of Juvenile Court, has been praised for exposing how Cook County’s juvenile justice system all but eliminates a child’s chance for redemption. Is Barack Obama consorting with a radical? Hardly. Ayers is nothing more than an aging lefty with a foolish past who is doing good. And while, yes, Obama is friendly with Ayers, it appears to be only in the way of two community activists whose circles overlap. Obama’s middle name is Hussein. That doesn’t make him an Islamic terrorist. He stopped wearing a flag pin. That doesn’t make him unpatriotic. And he’s friendly with UIC Professor William Ayers. That doesn’t make him a bomb thrower. Time to move on to Phony Flap 6,537,204.” [Chicago Sun-Times <http://www.suntimes.com/news/commentary/822560,CST-EDT-edit03a.article> , 3/3/08]

Noam Scheiber Of TNR: “I Don’t See Evidence Of Any Relationship” Between Obama And Ayers. Noam Scheiber of The New Republic wrote, “Ben says Ayers and Obama were, at best, casual friends. Even that seems to overstate things, though. I don’t see evidence of any relationship. The only concrete connection we know of is the meeting, which was attended by a number of local liberals; their contemporaneous membership on the board of a local organization; and a $200-donation by Ayers to one of Obama’s state senate campaigns. (Obama also once praised something Ayers had written about the juvenile justice system.) I’m not saying they couldn’t have been casual friends; just that there isn’t much evidence for that at this point.” [The New Republic, 2/22/08 <http://blogs.tnr.com/tnr/blogs/the_stump/archive/2008/02/22/parsing-the-ayers-allegation.aspx> ]

George Packer: The Obama-Ayers “Media Flap Is An Absurd And Opportunistic Piece Of Guilt By Association” That “Deserves To Die A Swift And Ignominious Death.” “Now George Stephanopoulos, Hillary Clinton, and a legion of Republican strategists are tying Bill to Obama because they sat on the board of a foundation together. What if they did? And what if they’re friendly neighbors in Hyde Park? Bill and Bernardine are also friends with an old friend of mine who has a sterling reputation as a juvenile-court judge. Does that prove anything, other than that they’ve had successful careers in education and law, respectively? This latest media flap is an absurd and opportunistic piece of guilt by association. Unlike Obama’s membership for many years in the church of Reverend Jeremiah Wright, or his comments <http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/georgepacker/2008/04/in-november-200.html> last week in San Francisco, it raises no questions about his beliefs, only about our trivial political culture. It deserves to die a swift and ignominious death.” [New Yorker, 4/18/08 <http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/georgepacker/2008/04/strange-when-so.html> ]

In spite of what the polls are indicating, I feel that the McCain and Palin should be more concerned with a plan of action on the economic status of the middle class than telling me about Obama’s relations with other people. I’m more concerned about jobs, keeping a home, paying bills, and paying for my child to go to college so if McCain and Palin can’t relate to that then they need not tell me about whats going on in the Jones’ household.

Comment by Rcf

It is eay for liberal friends to suggest that there is nothing to this relationship, but there are others that have investigated this matter more thoroughly and have come to different opinion.

Comment by Brad Meador

They’re not false; I wish the Obama camp and Obama himself will stop LYING to the American People. Another thing that you people need to know about Obama. He is NOT a natural Born citizen according to the Framers of the the Constitution. He may have been born in HI, but he also had citizenship in Kenya and Indonesia. Therefore he CAN NOT run for President. If he was NOT a citizen of those other countries he could but you can’t run for President if you have dual citizenship. It’s all mentioned in the Constitution. In other words we’re on the midst of a Constitutional Crisis.

There was going to be a case against that but the Obama camp delayed it so they could hide the truth from the American People (they’ve been pretty good at that). All that had to happen during the court case is Obama would have to prove he had a birth certificate from HI. Showing that he delayed the trial just proves that there’s a possibility the BC from HI does NOT exist.

Regardless of what people think, I’m not making this up. If you’re curious I’ll give you the site where I got the information from.

Comment by Steven

Hey, Obama’s friends and associates help define him. Too bad for him that he didn’t have the common sense to pick his friends more wisely. Sarah Palin clearly surpasses him in experience and common sense.

Comment by Myles

I don’t see how they could dispute this known thruth… Their response is week… Why not just say something like he has several friends and doesn’t background check everyone… anyway…I know this is slightly off topic. But I couldn’t find where else to submit this question… is Barack for or against paying reparations for slavery? And why his he considered “black” if he half white? My friend says he is for reparations and has made statements early in his career as a community organizer that called for them to be paid. I think this is important to the election because it shows his stance on race issues. Just because he is half black doesn’t mean he shouldn’t be asked anything about his views on race relations. And since I’m 1/64th black would I qualify?

Comment by Ken

The whole Ayers/Obama guilt by association and the way Sarah Palin discussed it, as if she had inside knowledge, rather than just a script, really makes me wonder if they could possibly have anything on Sen. Obama, they are clearly just making stuff up out of any meager straw they can grasp. It’s pathetic.

Comment by Chris

The New York Times also happen to be in the tank for Obama…didn’t FoxNews also factcheck http://www.factcheck.org the other day on the NRA comments? So why do I care what factcheck.org says?

Comment by Pinehurst NC Golfer

I just don’t like Obama. When it comes down to voting. People just can’t vote for someone they don’t like. Obama seems militant when he speaks. I just don’t trust him to be our President. He’s OK as senator or community organizer leader, but not as President. McCain is likable and Palin is very likable. So I will vote for those I like…McCain and Palin. Obama will have problems “erasing” his past with the public (people like me). It shows his bad dangerous character.

Comment by Laraine Yoss

The Obama camp wishes it were desperate. Why is it that when someone brings attention to everything about this man’s past….it’s somehow a desperate attempt to swift boat him. He has a past and from where I and many other millions of Americans sit…it’s pretty shady.

Comment by keplin

I am a Republican but this stupid wave of unintelligent campaign strategy will fail. If Mr McCain will not put his energy on issues that bothers on the welfare of the ordinary American citizen, I will cast my vote for Obama and I will convince my friends alike (Republicans and Independents) to do same. I am really beginning to realize how foolish was John McCain decision on choosing Palin as VP

Comment by msamhunter

Goes to show when any opponent is losing to go revert to mudslinging. This will backfire in John McCain’s face especially since his VP nominee is under an ethics investigation herself and who has a husband who was also a little radical himself in his younger days. Alaska succeed from the Union. Doesn’t sound too patriotic to me.

Comment by Mike

This will come back and bite McCain in the rear end. When all else fails, revert to mudslinging. Not a good thing to do when your VP nominee is already under an ethics investigation and whose husband once advocated AK succeeding from the union. Doesn’t sound all that patriotic to me. Be careful of what you do because it can come back and bite you.

Comment by Nat Wasilla Alaska

Desperate is right, especially since Palin is under investigation here at home for abuse of power. She is a rag liar!

Comment by Bradley

You know am thinking that Obama didn’t really have any friends before he started his run for the White House. I’ve been to his home, we have had coffee together, but we never talked and Rev Wright I never heard him say any of this so called thoughts on American. I think that Sen. Obama had to get into politics to find friends and people to share his beliefs and that only took 19 months to learn to run for president and hear the needs of all people. Where did all that knowledge come from? I wonder, isn’t it amazing for guy with no friends til now.

Comment by Jean-Jeannie CA

So Elly May Clampett Palin thinks she’s going to slime her way to the Whitehouse, huh? This is a classic, nasty Republician right-wing tactic. They all should be thrown out of office so we can start again clean.

Comment by SpookyX

McCain/Palin are liars over and over again. Remember it was a lie that got us into Iraq in the first place. We need honesty in the White House for a change. Obama/Biden 08

Comment by Gregory Gray

Check out Media Matters to see McCain’s own link to G. Gordon Liddy. Sara Palin and the McCain campaign need to look into their own hearts before they start casting stones.

Comment by Rich

The NY Times is worthless. “Do Not Appear To Have Been Close”?!? Are they kidding me? Didn’t Obama buy property from Ayers? Didn’t he work with him on some sort of charity in Chicago? Didn’t he call him a “friend”? What does it take for the NY Times to consider them close a gay marriage between them? Matching T-Shirts?

Comment by k murray

obama how long does a dog get kick before he bites back it time to stop turning the other cheek

Comment by Jackie Yates

Does anyone really expect the NY Times, Washington Post, or Chicago Sun Times to
report anything that would upset their applecart? This looks like preemptive reporting
in order to deflect the McCain/Palin vetting-something these liberal papers have refused
to do!

mccain is so despereate and palin is so stupid…. go away both of you to ur 7 houses… pick one we dont care just go away and leave the future president alone

Comment by frank

The McCain camp has stooped to a new low.

He should be ashamed.

Comment by m

What a moron… She was 5 years old when the “terrorist” actions occurred, and charges against Ayers were dropped. In today’s world Ayers is an exemplary citizen. Palin, on the other hand, has direct ties with associates of CONVICTED CRIMINALS like Jack Abramoff and one’s under investigation like Ted Stevens and, oh yeah, HERSELF.

Comment by Lola Sanderman

McCain campaign’s Steve Schmidt, about two weeks ago: “Whatever the New York Times once was, it is today not by an standard a journalistic organization.”

Sarah Palin today: “…according to the New York Times, and they are hardly ever wrong…”

The campaign is looking very desperate. Why not work on some REAL plans for how you are going to run this country. Some real solutions that will help us out? Please?

Comment by becki

Arent these the people who are “looking to the future” not
stuck in the past? And the “folks” who said its not time to point fingers??? Why are we not talking issues instead of destructive, time wasting garbage. Palin should be brushing up on issues so that she can actually do an interview as well as a scripted debate.
Honestly, the republicans are shameless. Maybe we should be talking about McCains association with the Keating 5 and Palin’s relationship with her witchcraft protector.

Comment by JohnP

We knew this was coming. McCain / Palin- get back to the issues and stay away from the cynical personal attacks.

Comment by Martin, GA

C’mon Obama was given from the CIA top clearance and was totally screened ! This was a stupid and absurd comment!

Comment by Paulette

Palin is right, Obama has very close ties to very strange and dangerous people.

Comment by serena

DO NOT BELIEVE WHAT MOST LEFT WING LIBERAL NEWSPAPERS SAY ABOUT OBAMA. The Obama camp also denies Stanley Kurtz has much to say about Ayres and Obama. The Obama camp tried to have him thrown off of the radio because he tells the truth. And Obama was on the Board of Elects in Ayres, “community organizations”. Also Obama has donated $800,000.00 to the Ayres foundation in which turn Ayres has donated money to the Obama campaign.

Comment by thomas

What is most disturbing is that Sarah Palin claims to be a Christian, if so, we have another hypocritical Christian politician in the making. God help us and Sarah too.

Comment by Norris Tyler

i hope that people dont fall for this garbage from palin and mccain. hopefully people are smarter than that but i dont think so… my god, obama was 8 years ond and does not associate with this man. i am tired of the scare tactics that republicans use to control people that cannot think on their own. it’s also racism.

To many wrong associations. The pastor, Fredi mac guy who stole the money, realestate jailbird wh sold him the house, hamas and now Ayes. What is he running for? A candidate for president or a candidate for jail?

Desperate - HARDLY!!!! Thank GOD GOV Palin & the media are reporting the FACTS - what the hell took so long??? The American people want & need the TRUTH about this Fraud.

Ayres, Rezko, Wright, Raines, ACORN - how many other criminals are his friends??????

Obama is far too Radical with a very questionable background to ever be elected!

McCain/Palin - a Team we can TRUST!

Have Republicans noticed above that the New York Times, Washington Post, and Time magazine call the allegations about Ayers phony and lacking evidence? Do the facts still matter to conservatives?

Let’s not forget the last time John Mccain sent the campaign into the gutter. The media was so critical of that decision that the campaign had to change their tactic. Seems history will repeat itself.

Desperate indeed. This time, the voters are much wiser. We all see the results to ur economy for allowing the swiftboaters to influence us in giving George Bush another term. This Republican thinks our trickling down economic policy has to change and will use his only vote, time and money to ensure that happens.

Never again.

Comment by john

At this point, Ms. Palin strikes me as a ventriloquist’s dummy. This line was fed thru her by the McCain handlers.

What a shame. in previous campaigns, McCain himself was “swift boated” as the father of a illegitimate child and collaborator while a prisoner in Vietnam. How can he condone this type of thing.

As for Ms. Palin, she is shameless.

Comment by Doreen

Obama and his cronies (the pro-Obama media) should quit trying to intimidate the McCain camp from letting the public know the truth about Obama and his shady associations and friendships. The fact is that Obama associates with people that are anti-American (for example, Ayers and Rev. Wright). Quit trying to intimidate the McCain camp from letting the American public know the truth about Obama.

Comment by jack kimberly

Obama’s relationship with aires & rezko shows us the kind of man obama realy is, his wife hates America. There is a question of obama’s origination, obama’s mother moved to Kenya when she was 7 months pregnant and it is quiet possible that obama was born in Kenya.

The aforementioned article, by Scott Shane, delved into the relationship between Mr. Ayers and Mr. Obama, who together served on education boards in Chicago years ago. Mr. Shane wrote:

But the two men do not appear to have been close. Nor has Mr. Obama ever expressed sympathy for the radical views and actions of Mr. Ayers, whom he has called “somebody who engaged in detestable acts 40 years ago, when I was 8.”

Taken from the New York Times today. Straight talk America

Comment by anna jones

It’s about time someone started bringing out all of the radical associations that Obama has. I welcome Obama to explain why it seems that everyone that Obama knows have some kind of radical association. Palin had every right to bring it to the forefront again because it has never been addressed only swept under the rug like everything that Obama has to answer to. Plus are we to believe that the New York times is really writing the truth, please!! Not everyone has drunk the kool aid. It’s about time that the people find out what this guy is really about. LIES and DECEIT!!!!

Comment by Jerome Thomas

John McCain’s campaign perfectly illustrates the adage “pride goes before a fall.” McCain seems to feel that the electorate is as shallow as he, and will swallow any absurd lie and spin put to them. He is in for a rude surprise. Barack Obama has John McCain outclassed in every category. The very idea of electing a tired and desperate old curmudgeon like John McCain is as revolting as insulting. The only thing capable of defeating Barack Obama now is the very real and very deep vein of racism that pervades America. If racism wins, this country will deserve the lawless and corrupt administration it will get.

Comment by Max E Raydon

The fact that Obama has had a relationship with far left idiots should be made very public.

I am so tired of the lies and the propaganda spewing from the McCain campaign! John McCain promised to run a clean campaign. He is just a cranky tired old man with no gas in the tank along with his brain dead side kick Sarah Palin. They have no new idea’s so they resort to the only thing they have left, that is to run negative ads and personal attacks….. 30 days and no more John Cain and a one way ticket back to Alaska for golly gee Sarah Palin!

it’s about time someone goes after him since barack has been playing the race card and class warfare the whole campaign both general and primaries.

Desperate fear-mongering.
McCain camp. now saying, “F***! We’re losing big. Let’s call the opponent a terrorist!”

Attacks worse than this failed to stop Obama in the primaries. Now, out of sheer idiocy and unoriginality the McCain camp. is resorting to this.

Comment by Kanyagia

Obama has always flirted with undesirables. The recent election debacle in Kenya is a case in point. He clearly dispalyed a lack of judgement by watching from the sidelines as chaos degenerated into loss of human life yet he mentions the country when he wants to get an identity advantage. His association with the opposition and their contribution to the violence is well known.

Go Sarah. Go John McCain. It is always helpful to state the truth. Evil will not prevail. Maybe some of those who have been deceived by Obama will have their eyes opened and choose a different path.

Obama may win (through treachery) the upcoming battle (election) but he will not win a more important future battle. He and those who knowingly follow him into perdition will ultimately be crushed by a much more powerful force.

Amazing that Palin can misrepresent and we are supposed to swallow this!! I have a feeling that these negative attacks will backfire on her and the American people will instead appreciate the positive proposala coming from Obama.

Anyone who allows McCain and Palins lies to go unchallenged is at best unpatriotic. America deserves better than this for a President and Vice President. We’ve had eight years of lies, distortion and distraction. We need intelligent people for a change who care more about enacting policy that will help Americans, not more character assassination and cheap shots by a campaign who would rather win an election based on lies than sound, thoughful policy.

Comment by MARTY X

THE REPULICAN MCCAIN/PALIN CANDIATES ARE USING NEGATIVE TACTICS TO DISCREDIT OBAMA/BIDEN, BECAUSE THEY ARE UP IN THE POLLS. AMERICAN’S WHO REALLY LOOK FOR CHANGE AND LEADERSHIP TO TURN THIS ECONOMANY AROUND, THEN VOTE FOR OBAMA/BIDEN TICKET. THEY ARE FOR THE REAL CHANGE THAT THE AMERICAN PEOPLE NEED AND DESERVE. LOOK FOR THE FACTS, AND TRUE ISSUES, NOT THE NEGATIVE ATTACKS THAT THE MCCAIN/PALIN TICKET IS USING. PALIN NEEDS TO LOOK AT HER OWN CORRUPTION OF TROOPER GATE PROBE BEFORE SHE JUDGES SOMEONE ELSE’S BACK GROUND. SARAH GAVE A GREAT SPEECH, BUT IF YOU READ OFF CUE CARDS TO DEBATE, THEN IT SHOWS SHE ISN’T EXPERIENCE FOR THE VP OR PRESIDENT.

They forget to mention the fact that Obama launched one of his political campaigns at a reception on Ayers’ home. That seems like more than a casual friendship to me. Seems like the New York Crimes is forgetting a few things.

DESPERATE? It’s information that needs to come out about Obama, that should have come out from McCain long ago.

Obama has more than just Ayers to worry about. He’s got so many shady characters in his life for a long time..which forms a person’s belief system; I think we all should be concerned.

Comment by Mac

America was only a force for good when we didn’t invade other countries based on lies and deregulate important
Palin is resorting to making up slurs to avoid the real issues that McCain is going to be the same — OR WORSE — than Bush and that she herself tried to get a librarian fired because the librarian stood up for real American principals like free speech, and wouldn’t ban books.

I’m going with Obama. He’s a realist not a delusionist.

Forgive us messiah obama if we are worried that you spent most of your life working with and supporting sleaze like ayers, wright, and rezko. this is only a few! This is a completely legitamate issue. What kind of fool goes to a church for 20 years and doesn’t hear what the pastor is preaching? Do you think Americans are that stupid? I have no respect for obama or biden who apparently hates obama one minute then loves him another. See the light before it is to late. obamas wife is a racist anti american that would sonner have europeans love us than do what is right for our country. The McCain campaign is cratering. Palin is hopeless without a script. (Don’t think her “doggone its” would translate well with Vladimir Putin.) The Republican ticket can’t win on policy, so it must resort to the only thing that it has left, an attenuated connection to someone no one knows or cares about. Good luck with public financing, Johnny.

I smell desperate times for Mccain camp. People have made their minds the only polls that will change this false accusation is Mccain’s even lower. This will eventually bring down Palin’s numbers and the whole ticket as whole.

McCAIN and Palin are desperate, now she is in trouble in Alaska they want her e-mails. What else has she been up to? What did McCain see in her? They are both liers. But we American’s can see how desperate they are running scared.

Funny, ISN’T Senator Obama the man that said he barely knew Ayers?

You Don’t serve as Chairman of the Board of CAC without the FOUNDER William Ayers attending Board Meetings! AND 500 Million dollars is a lot of money to control. 5 Years+3 years….

But then again, Senator Obama is the one who said “I only worked for 5 hours on one case as an Associate Attorney (Rezko)”. Failing of course, to mention the 17 year friendship, buying the house, writing a letter supporting another Rezko building while the Rezko buildings in his district had NO HEAT…and the one I love?
Rezko on Senator Obama 2004 US Senate Campaign Finance Committee.

Me thinks Obama is a Liar.
