Palin Explains SCOTUS Answer

ST. LOUIS –-

Sarah Palin came under severe criticism after her interview with CBS News’ Katie Couric when the GOP Vice-Presidential candidate could not name a Supreme Court decision she opposed or even newspapers and magazines she reads. Her circular avoidance to the Supreme Court answer especially worried conservatives.

However, today in an interview with FNC’s Carl Cameron, Palin aimed to clear up that worry and said she was “flippant” during the previous interview because she was “annoyed” at the line of questioning. She did apologize several times during the interview and said that she should have named what Supreme Court decisions she disagrees with because it was an “important” question. She named three Supreme Court verdicts she does oppose:

“Kennedy versus Louisiana, where the Supreme Court will tell a state that they can’t impose the death penalty, even on heinous crime of repeat child rapists. That a state, its rights are taken away by the Supreme Court and we would not be able to decide for ourselves whether the death penalty in a case like that should be implemented or not.” Palin said, “The Kelo case also, with eminent domain. That affects me, as a governor. It affected me as a mayor, also. Part that property rights are so precious in this nation and for the Supreme Court to have sided with government, instead of the people, the property owners on that. That was frustrating. And then another one personally affected me, also. The Exxon Valdez oil spill. Siding with the oil company, as they decimated Alaska’s coastline and much of our fisheries and much of our coastal communities livelihoods — the people who live there. And they sided with Exxon on the punishment, the punitive damage that was to be awarded.”

She also said that she “reads the same things that other people across the country read” including the Wall Street Journal, the Economist, and the New York Times—despite it often being bashed by the McCain campaign.

She said she didn’t answer what periodicals she reads because she was “taken aback” by the question and saw it as Couric accusing Alaskans of not being “in tune with the rest of the world.”

Mainstreet America found Couric’s questions condescending as well. I longed for Palin to answer Couric’s question about reading material with “I always buy the magazines with the most coupons, Katy. Next question?”.

Comment by rfx

Well, I’m sure she has had plenty of time now to look up some Supreme Court cases that she would have disagreed with. It was pretty clear at the time of the Katie Couric interview that Sarah Palin just didn’t know of any Supreme Court decisions.

Sarah Palin as Vice President - what a scary thought.

Comment by aida

I wonder why Katie Couric did not ask the same questions of Obama, or Biden. Does she think alaskans are ignorant or from another country, or are they the poor relations of the US. Shame on her.

I saw the interview. I was appalled by Katie Curics questioning and her facial expressions. Like she was the boss. She did not do justice to ABC.

Comment by Bob

WHatever, like most of America she reads no newspapers or magazines. Other than rowe v wade, she did not know any Supreme court decisions, and she simply is an uninterested and uninformed individual.

Did anyone else notice that her commentary today about Michigen and other aspectws of the campaign show her tendency to want full control? I suspect she is planning her 2012 run for the presidency.

She is bright, but someone who is bright without a curiosity for the more prominant global questions or even national ones, is more dangerous than just about any other possible leader.

Your buying this?

Wow

Ignorance must really be bliss

Comment by Nelson

so sarah palin was annoyed with the questions that were asked her by everyone accept FOX NEWS!

She and McCain and FOX NEWS might as well get a hotel room together, because everyone seems to be in bed together!

The world has seen Sarah Palin for what she is and is giving her a pitty party for now!

Comment by Nelson

It has been hours now since this was posted and no comment postings!

Fox must be screening this comment post very tight!

They are so bias and partisan!

Comment by Jack

It’s only taken her three or four days to go to the library and look up names of different papers and Supreme Court decisions so she could finally give us an answer. She is pathatic.

Comment by Hillarious

Does anyone out there seriously buy that this woman knew a single court case prior to being schooled by everyone in the McCain camp after this schirade? What a joke. She’s a great performer, I’ll give her that. But you right wingers are really as out of touch as you appear to be if you actually think that Sarah Palin was “coerced” into giving the second grade level answers that she gave in 3 separate interviews. She is clueless beyond repeating standard rhetoric.

Comment by Katie Dee

What other Presidential or Vice-Presidential candidate has been asked what newspapers and magazines he/she reads? I think Katie Couric expected her to say something like, ” I read the local Wasilla newspaper and oh yeah, I LOVE People magazine and TV Guide!!”
SO UNFAIR!!!

Comment by Karin

She still demonstrates an amazing inability to form complete sentences but at least we didn’t have to hear her mispronounce “nuclear” again.

Comment by GOP4LIFE

Wow… It is really easy to answer the question when you have a week to think about it, I mean wait for someone to give her the answer.

Comment by kingsley

You’re just plain stupid if you can’t figure out the real reason why she wouldn’t explain any SCOTUS decisions she disagrees with to Couric. IT’S BECAUSE SHE WASN’T FAMILIAR WITH ANY AT THE TIME! I assure you that the first thing she did after her embarrassing interview with Couric was study up with her advisors on what B.S. answer to give another interviewer if the same questions arise again. This woman will keep feeding us lies and the Run-Around Talk Express until November 4.

Sorry John McCain. You would’ve definitely had my vote if you had chosen a competent person for VP like Jindal, Romney, or Cantor. Instead you give us this “hottie” with no national or international experience. What a lack of judgment and slap to the faces of Americans.

Comment by MYS19

Fair and balanced….right.

Giving Mrs. Palin a forum to provide rehearsed answers– to somehow give the impression that she DID know a few Supreme Court cases (not to mention giving her an outlet to bash Katie Couric for asking very basic questions) is irresponsible journalism.

I wish Fox News would come out and just say what it is — completely biased and in the tank for McCain and Palin.

If you think any intelligent voter out there is taken in by Mrs. Palin’s garbage, Fox is sorely mistaken.

In fact, your “hard hitting” interviews are doing more to motivate Obama supporters like myself–I now, more than ever, know that we can never let someone like this ANYWHERE NEAR the White House - let alone in it.

Thanks, Fox “News”!

Comment by chuck

Katie Couric is in bed with the Democrats.

Comment by jp

Couric and Gibson should be the ones apologizing to Gov. Palen.
Wonder how they would have come across if Sarah was to ask them questions and see how they would perform under the stress of having just been picked to run for VP. Those two liberals would have flunked so badly they wouldn’t even have
played the interview. They truly suck!!! They are shameful. Once liked Katie, but that was when she was doing what she should be doing…working the Today show. Now she is a NOTHING!!! and the proof of that shows. I quit watching her a year ago. They played the interview so many times of Palen and Couric it is truly sickening. Give it up CBS….CNN….you are truly BIAS liberal stations. Thank goodness for FOX!!!!!!!!

Comment by Don

I dont understand why Palin could not answer a simple question such as what papers she reads… Why would she not say any paper and then challenge Katie on why she was asking such a silly question.
On the Supreme court question thier is no excuse that she could not name the Exxon ruling wich she said “Affected me personally”….
It takes over 3 days for her to come out and answer the question’s…. I was a supporter of the republican ticket but when the vice presidential canadite cannot think on her feet quick enough to answer 2 questions and put the pressure back on the reporter for asking a nonsense question I have to wonder how is this person going to represent us on a world stage or god forbid take over for Mc Cain?????.
3 days to formulate an answer is unacceptable… what happens when it hits the fan and she has to deal with a foriegn leader does she say ” I’ll get back to ya on that”
Come on we demand and expect more from our leaders and she just does instill the slightest bit of confidence in her knowledge or ability to think on her feet….

You must think we’re the dumbest bunch of sob’s on the planet. Hahahahahaha, Kelo! Yeah, I’m

sure you were just about to bring up the Kelo case, Sarah. Hahahahahaha! And you were so

shocked by the question, “what do you read?,” you acted like you didn’t even know HOW to read!!!

Hahahahahaha! Thank you Fox. Who says your not as funny as The Daily Show?!?! Hahahahahaha!

Comment by ScaredVoter

Yeah right….it’s so easy to go back after the fact and say coulda, shoulda, woulda.

Comment by lisalisa182

Isn’t this unbelievably obvious? She couldn’t name any cases in the first interview and then in a later one, says she was just annoyed and then names three? Puhleeze, it’s getting old, her covering her lack of knowledge. People have been focusing on her experience or lack thereof, but it’s really not about her experience, it’s about her lack of knowledge and understanding of world events… How can she make good decisions if she doesn’t understand the issues, or even know what they are???

Comment by Johnathan Glen

Palin and McCain Must win this. Our Country will be all kinds of crazy if Obama wins. We will be focused on the Left wing agendas instead of working on real problems. Check out PitbullPalin.org
for some “show your vote”.

Comment by Lazar Trubman

I remember when Curis became news ancor - what a sorry disgrace she was! She mimbles, stumbled like a second grader! And now she is suddenly the smart one? She is smart as Goldberg whose stupidity is amazing - especially when she was bashing McCain! All these %^%$%$# women on View! They couldn’t even respect McCain as a much older man who actually fought for them and went through hell so they can sit at their %^%$^^% View doing nothing and making pretty good money. What a sorry bunch! And now Curic-shmuric is asking Palin what is she reading down in Alaska! It is annoying! I wouldn’t put you, Curic-shmuric in the same room with Palin! You’re nothing. You can’t create one good thought, one good idea about anything - all you do is just read someone else’s thoughts. You shouldn’t even be allowed to talk to Palin - she is in a lot higher league!

Comment by Brian Kunzi

We are suppose to believe Palin’s comments on her earlier blunders were the result of her just being flippant with what she believes was an inappropriate question. No suprise, she still does not get it right. She claims she disagrees with the Kelo decision and states this decision affected her as mayor. She was mayor until 2002. The Kelo decision was handed down in June of 2005. I would like to hear her “you betcha” argument for how a 2005 Supreme Court decision affected her as mayor in 2002.

Comment by Wooooow

Im glad Palin had a chance to hop on wikipedia before she showed up to Fox News. I love a prepared VP.

And really, The Economist? She could at least have been realistic and said The Reading Rainbow.

Comment by Doug

Now she comes back with answers and excuses? Pathetic. The woman is pathetic. The Republican Party counts amongst it’s members the best America has to offer. The party can do so much better than Palin.

Comment by tehevo

This lady is dangerous, and carl “entertainment tonight caliber journalist” cameron is an idiot. he had to ask her old questions she has already failed on……Fox news pays this guy? I cant imagine what for…….

Comment by Martha

Let’s assume for one minute that she would ever get to NATO or G8 meetings. Which tactic would she choose : 1) your questions annoy me therefore I will not respond, 2) I will drown you in inconsistent, irrelevant folksy blabber, 3) which of my prerecorded tapes will I play to you, 4) I give you my most cute winks.
The meetings she had last week with some foreign politicians showed already that they were not too impressed with her. She was treated in a very patronizing, downtalking way which had nothing to do with sexism as none of the qualified female professionals were ever handled that way : Rice, Albright, Tatcher, Merkel were all considered to be one of the boys and treated with respect.
She, same as my Joe Sixpack neighbor, who I connect with great and by-the-way earns a lot less, will not be able to tacke the huge mess this country is in.

Comment by Luis

Backpedaling on her ignorance. Can’t even answer a simple question? Republicans are done. Thank GOD for picking Palin, so we don’t have to live with the Republican Party for 4 more years.

Comment by Jim in Bisbee

I think Gov. Palin has been sufficiently coached now. I’m pleased that one of her handlers has given her a list of Supreme Court rulings to be opposed to. It would be interesting to see if she can discuss them.

Regarding Troopergate, I’m concerned about the delaying tactics concerning the investigation. If she is innocent, then just let the investigation go. However, it does look bad, and it is better for them to have whispers about her actions rather than actual facts about her actions.

Comment by Mike

Wow, how long did it take Sarah to google Supreme Court decisions and have it ready when asked again. To claim she didn’t answer the questions because she was annoyed is utterly ridiculous.

Comment by Jeff

Wow a lot of education was going on at the McCain compound in Arizona. She is able to answer simple questions about magazines, newspapers and supreme court cases a mere 96hrs after they were asked.

Comment by joannegreco

She clearly won the debate and will make a fantastic Vice President!!

Comment by Jim

Go Palin.

Best Administration would be McCain/Biden.
Bipartisan and experienced.

Whatever happens, we cannot elect Barrack Obama.

Comment by Ya Heyder

No do overs
even in this interview she doesn’t look like she knows what she’s even repeating
loser lady
go north eh
its too late you have been qualyed

Comment by Palin 2012

She should just have used the line, the campaign will get back to you on that one..

Comment by deanna Bennett

Palin may have been annoyed be Katies questions, but Palin owned the american people an answer to the question at the time it was asked of her and she let her personal feelings get in the way of doing that. I was so excited about McCain choice for VP, but now I have a different view of her (she get’s mad when people ask her a simple question, why?) If she’s going to be VP there are going to be a great deal of “on the spot” or “Gotta” questions she’s going to be faced with. Bottomline, she can’t handle the job. I would like my leaders to have self control under presure, and she clearly not up to the job. Obama/Biden have my vote now and so that I couldn’t change my mine, I registered to vote early.

Comment by Dave Jones

I agree with Palin, Katie was trying to push her to give a bogus answer. Palin did very well considering the enviroment

Comment by Jojo

That’s good Palin. Go back home, do some research, then answer the interview questions. Sorry, that’s not the way it works. If you’re ever VP or president you won’t get several days to stop the world and make your decisions or develop a reply. Your response is clearly a poor attempt at trying to gain some face from debacle of an interview. Too little, too late.

Comment by Pat

Katie Couric showed what kind of a woman she is. Katie, you don’t deserve the 15 million salary you get. We know Katie is just another funny democrat.

Comment by Brian Kunzi

Palin wants to convince everyone her recent interview blunders were her attempts to be flippant. After several days of being prepped at the McCain ranch in Sedona she trys to bring specificity to questions she previously could not answer. Unfourtnately she won’t have the benefit of a few days of reflection and “education” if presented with a national crisis. But even after days of prepping and study she still cannot get it right. One of the Supreme Court decisions she cites is the Kelo decision limiting the use of eminent domain, a decision Palin indicates affected her as mayor. I would like to know her “you betcha” argument to explain how a decision handed down in June of 2005 affected her as mayor in 2002. Maybe math is also a weak point.

Give me a F*#@ing break. Fox News is going to re-write Sarah Palin’s brain-farts?

For a while it seemed Fox News was going to go beyond being a propoganda outlet… this is a giant step backwards.

Just report the facts, you butt heads.

Comment by j poozler

not “in tune” with the rest of the world? just because you got asked what magazines you read? you sound kind of paranoid, if you ask me.

Comment by Debater

Couric — “America’s Sweetheart” - - was unfair to Palin? Gimme a break. Every politician is asked what he reads for heavens sake. And it’s a perfectly legit question.

Thanks FOX for letting Palin have a do over - that was mighty decent of ya. But this Joe Six Pack ain’t buying it. Anyone can pass a test when yiou know the questions in advance.

Palin ain’t ready to be VP and has no business being anywhere near the presidency. I’m voting for Obama.

Comment by B OF DETROIT

COME ON!! ALREADY I CAN’T BELIVE SO- CALLED INTELLIGENT PEOPLE (S. PALIN, SPECIFICALLY) WOULD TRIED TO REBUKE THEIR CLEARLY APPARENT LACK OF BASIC PROFESSINAL KNOWLEDGE (IN THIS CASE, LAW) WITH SUCH NON SENSICAL AND NON- CONVINCING RETORT.

IT WOULD BE BETTER JUST TO LET THOSE FOLLIES TO DISIPIATE INTO THE PAST INSTEAD OF STIRRING UP ON GOING CONFRONTATIONS.

Comment by WillT

this is so phony.

She could not answer the question because she did not know an answer at the time.

Now, she has been told what cases she SHOULD have answered with.

She has been in bootcamp for the last two weeks. They have drilled into her head what to say, when to say it and how to say it.

Whether Rep or Dem, is America so dumb to fall for this?

McCain should have picked someone with the knowledge to be VP or President….not someone with a blank slate image he could paint.

I am so disgusted with how the Rep party is turning its back on our basic tenets and doing/saying anything to get a few yards at a t time.

Comment by LasVegasScott

This is the best candadate we could come up with. We are so screwed if she has to be coached in order to be able to name a newspaper or two. And her voice is enough to make me vote against her. What a nagging hen…

Comment by Its About time!

She’s a phony! How hard is it to name a few newspapers or magazines you read? People don’t know her and that question was fair, the public wants to know what she reads, and all of a sudden she can recall what she reads in the comforting hands of Fox News? is there something wrong with this picture. If she can’t be transparent on small questions like that, just imagine what she’ll hold back from the public once she’s in office, if that ever happens. The American people deserve better than “flippant” answers. Isnt that what Bush has been doing for eight years?
