Personalities v. Issues

Ever since McCain campaign manager Rick Davis told the Washington Post that the election was not about issues, but a “a composite view of what people take away from these candidates” - Barack Obama has incorporated it into his stump speech. Today at a town hall event in Duryea, PA, Obama used the material three times.

“John McCain’s campaign manager said just two days ago, said this campaign is not going to be about the issues, it’s going to be about personalities,” he said to workers at a glass factory in northeast Pennsylvania.

“I think I’ve got a pretty good personality, but that’s not why I am running for president. I’m running for president to put people back to work, to give them health care, to make them have college that’s affordable. This is not a personality contest!” he exclaimed.

Thirteen minutes later, in case anyone forgot, he brought it up again. “This is not about personalities. If want it to be about personalities, you know, we’ll go out for a beer sometime and we’ll talk,” he joked, saying Americans would rather have a president who fights for them.

As the Republicans have emphasized McCain’s biography during the Republican convention, Obama has been trying to focus the debate on issues. “When they say this isn’t about issues, it’s about personalities, what they’re really saying is we’re going to try to scare people about Barack,” he said at the end of his town hall. “So we’re going to say, ‘You know, maybe he’s got Muslim connections,’ or, we’re going to say that, ‘You know, he hangs out with radicals or he’s not patriotic.’  Just making stuff up.”

But even Obama has acknowledged that Republicans have used that strategy successfully in the past.

Who would you rather spend your leisure time with? Barack’s ideas do scare me. No, personality and issues are both important. Birds of a feather flock together.

All this Obama can do is tell lies. He can find nothing else to bolster his shaky campaign - the campaign that bid over $10,000,000 in an effort to beat the McCain/Palin force after her speech. Boy, those old rich guys are neeeeervous!!!! Let’em squirm!!!!

Comment by Jane Palmer

I think I would consider myself “hanging out with radicals” if I had been associated with them for over twenty years the Obama has. He is a bald-faced liar to say that others are “making up stuff.” A real, genuine liar.

I THINK IT IS A DISGRACE THE WAY THE NEWS MEDIA IS RUNNING FAKE PHOTOS AND THE RUNNING DOWN OF GOV. PALIN. WHY DIDN’T THE MEDIA GO AFTER OBAMA THE SAME WAY. THE NEWS MEDIA IS NOT TREATING THE CANDIDATES EQUAL.

Bonney Kapp what Rick Davis said is important. If the republicans don’t understand the issues of today they have a problem. If this election is about personalities I quest Obama will win.

I think Obama is all confused. He talks as if he is sitting in a court room, in front of a judge. He lacks flow of thoughts, words and its fluidity. He looks, his facial expressions and even the way he talk since winning the nomination is display of his arrogance. He definitely wants to say more but he has NO grasp of things; like “I understand that”.
I have a nephew; who can talk non stop for hours and in the end it is all about him and his family, and children. Obama reminds me of this guy.
I don’t think Americans can be that stupid and gullible to fall for his rhetoric approach and vote for him or for his party. He has not said much so far. He will increase the taxes for corporations who create the employment, and give to the workers who would have No jobs.
There is No denial that Bush went into war to protect American because of 9/11. But attackers had planned and exercised the whole affair several moths ago. Planning and the execution did not happen overnight. It was in the making for years.
He has to change his attitude and get the hold on the things.
Americans need security and then jobs. Who needs jobs when you are NO more, anddead already.

Obama’s campaign has routinely tried to link McCain to Bush. How is linking McCain to Bush an issues oriented campain. Maybe Obama should alter his “issue oriented campaign slogan. “Instead of “change you can believer in,” Obama can try “things I will do”. Don’t expect to ever find out what his changes will be though, also, the “things” he will improve resemble a balsa wood race car, just remeber to avoid opening the hood, I’ve heard that the engine is missing.

I canno’t believe what this world has come tooo, and we go around saying we are civalized lol how can we when we cannot see what is in front of noses. People need to wake up!!! realize that Enough is Enough and it is Time for a CHANGE!! issues are what matters!!! presonality and charm is great thing to have but it cannot be about that… I am a middle classs citizen, working and going to school. I am a woman !!! I dont want to hurt no more when i see Immagrants suffering, living in places of one bedroom with a family of six!! paying so much Taxes just making the rich richer. Job oppurtunites are dissapearing becuase we are so used to haveing other countries doing things for for cheaper. Health care is not even an opption because i have to make electricity bill and untilities let alone single mother with young children!!! I see older people the need to go back to work becuase their social cannot be enough to pay the rent !!!!

Anyone who understands the English language and listened to the speeches, heard the issues and how they would be addressed. I guess Obama is not a good listener, he is just a talker.

The Democratic Party has been using personality as their campaign center since the start of the primaries. I have followed closely both Dem and Rep races. I watched and listened to the many presidental hopefuls. Obama was hand picked by the Dem Party from the beginning; grooming him for this role since 2006. If it were not for Obama’s personality, looks, and ability to speech eloquently, Hillary would be the Dem Presidental pick. What I have learned is Obama is nothing but a typical Chicago political machine style politician. Thus the slogan he offers change is a lie. Obama is a good old boy like most of the other politicains in DC. Based upon what I have heard and read to date, from and about Obama and McCain, McCain and the Republican Party have earned my independent voter vote…the Democratic Party does not represent what America needs or wants. If it were not for Obama’s personality and his party connections, he would still be associating and working with his questionable Maxist friends and mentors and be a member of his leftist church. For 2008 Obama and the Democratic Party are not good for America.

I’m afraid it is about way more than the issues for a lot of people. It’s about trust, character, resolve, decision making, intelligence, and the all of those things play into a candidate’s perceived ability to “fix” the issues. A composite of ideals. A composite of personalities.

For the most part, both candidates have a host of things they promise to “fix”. If you listen closely, the list is exactly same. The only thing that differentiates them is “how” they might go about doing it. But neither will just magically make it happen by themselves.

Just like the way the government works. No one person is going to fix everything to my satisfaction. It’s impossible. I don’t expect it. And we also can’t predict what will happen tomorrow to change our course. (Think 9-11) I’m looking for a leader who will pull government together to do everything within their power to make this a better country, and to give citizens better opportunities. Who can get the job done? That is the question.

For the past 8 years, and even moreso in the last 2 since the sour grapes Dems got back in control in Congress, and were determined not to agree on anything with the Republicans, the parties and Congress have accomplished absolutely nothing but work against each other. Like children at opposite ends of the playground. We all fundamentally wanted the same thing. Hope, prosperity, etc. No one WANTED to be at war. No one WANTED our economy to falter or our citizens to suffer. But that is what happened, clear and simple. Our woes can not only be blamed on the Republican Party. It is a ludicrous and insulting idea to offer half the American people who voted for that administration.

It’s not so much about how one candidate is going to do it, just my belief that an effort will be put forth to “fix” it to the best of their ability and that it is something they are passionate about. Both candidates want it - but who has the determination and more importantly the ability, to get it done?

Barack, I know you mean well and I know you love this country, but I do not believe you have what it’s going to take.

OBAMA IS RUNNING SCARED RIGNT NOW BECAUSE McCAIN/PALIN HAVE WALKED THE WALK AND CAN TALK THE TALK REGARDING CHANGE AND REFORM FOR THE PEOPLE OF THIS COUNTRY THAT THEY HAVE SERVED. OBAMA CAN NOT GIVE ONE EXAMPLE OF SOMEONE WITHIN HIS PARTY THAT HE HAS STOOD UP TO OR A CHANGE FOR THE PEOPLE THAT HE HAS SET FORTH. OBAMA IS FULL OF “GLAMOR” AND HAS NO “GRIT”!! I AM NOT VOTING ON WHO I FEEL CAN PUT ON THE BEST SHOW….I AM VOTING FOR WHO I FEEL CAN DO THE MOST FOR THIS COUNTRY AND FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MY LIFE I AM TRULY EXCITED ABOUT THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION. SO WATCH OUT OBAMA …..McCAIN AND PALIN ARE MOVING UP FAST; WITH SUBSTANCE AND GRIT, THEY ARE GONNA RUN YOU OVER!!

Did Obama honestly just pull the race card again??? Hasn’t he learned his lesson yet? You can’t use the race card until someone actually uses race against you. Just claiming someone is going to do it does not mean they have yet or are actually going to. I think it’s Obama trying to scare people…

john mccain made a right choice. and obama just hand over the victory over to mccain by choosing biden. if obama choose clinton the game is over right after he puts her on the ticket but bad choice cause his future.

Obama is a Chicago Thug. I do not trust him. I do not trust the people that have influenced him. He has no personality other than that of a narcissist.

Watching a clip of him at the glass factory, it looked as if it was an inconvenience to be there and he hoped the photo op would end soon.

Obama says this; McCain replies and says that;Obama responds…

My answer: Who cares? Both parties gave their credentials; both gave their history; both make good points; but is anyone addressing the real issues? CORPORATE GREED!

My questions are not about taxes (that seems to be a government word). I want to know about the things that really drive a person to foreclose on their home or make it difficult or impossible to make ends meet… corporate greed in business.

Granted there are times I make purchases I shouldn’t make with my credit card. But, if I get a Discover Card or a card from Chase or Citibank… and the interest rate is at 12% and I rack up the card with both necessity and stupidity… still I think my payment is going to be $100 a month. That may stop me from buying hamberger and spending a month and buy Spam; that is my fault, but I still am not worrying about the end of the month when my bills are due, and I can still make my bills. But the card companies now look at my debt to income, change the card from %12 to 29% and attach fees, and my payment is now $250 or more depending on the fees they attach. Why? If you want me to spend, why is it constitional for companies making it harder to pay my bills? Just cut me off, I can adjust to that, not to compiled bills that may make me miss a mortgage payment. Those things strain more than income tax becuse it’s weekly, not once a year in April. Fix that.

Why does a house have about $9,000 in closing cost? I know there are title searches and this and that, but if the lender is going to make 300 thousand on a 100 thousand dolloar purchase, is not getting an additional 9 thousand going to make them go under? Find a way to fix this.

I read some place, an I apologize I don’t remember the source, that inspite of all these home foreclosures, home sales are up. Is the number affected by those who do have income to purchase those foreclosures?

Why is a bank allowed to charge me a dollar for an ATM withdrawl (which I am ok with that) 1 place, $2.00 at the store, $3.50 at a vacation spot? Fix that.

I agree, that I should feel a supporting hand from the government on my shoulder, and I agree it is my responsibility for me to achieve my own American dream;but, my fellow American is jabbing me in the ribs.

I amasking either candidate to address those issues

Obama had planned to win this election on his personality because he knows nothing about the issues and thought he could snooker McCain. But Sarah Palin shot those plans to hell. Now he can’t win on personality or issues. He can’t compete on qualifications.

You know what is crazy as all get out: Obama and his Camp are getting a taste of their own medicine! Hmmmm, when this whole process started, Obama busted onto to the scene, no-one knew him, he handed out a bunch of distorted truths, then when called on it he claimed a brain fart a.k.a the more popular catch phrase of 2008, he “misspoke”. He never answered a single question without some sort of pseudo riddle, (for those who aren’t following me: he answered “that’s not the issue”a.k.a the other 2008 catch phrase “no substance”. His groupies still can’t answer a single media question on how he PLANS to actually follow through with his “Change”, and talk about someone stealing campaign slogans, how about Obama’s little back-door theft on the popular “Got Milk” slogan, or for those who don’t drink milk, let me explain “Got Hope”! GEt it??? ALL, meaning BOTH sides are full of poo-poo! And we are all in for a world of change, but not in the way either side is promising it!!! Well, at least, if not anything else….proof that Karma is alive and obviously not a myth!

We need to hear about issues because we’re dying out here. We’ve been told there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, so we went to fight a war that broke the bank. We’re still trying to put the pieces together in postwar Iraq, with a surge in spending, so we can call that a victory. The rest of the world, who had UN inspectors tell us there were no weapons in Iraq, think we’re out of our minds. We have truly lost our position as leader of the free world. The dollar is in the dump because we keep spending money on the war that shouldn’t have been. The so-called “wealth” we had developed in our homes was all a dream as real value in real estate has settled in.
I am very tired of the lies, the smirks, and the destruction of the middle class. This is a pivotal time in the history of the USA. Our foreign policy for at least the past 50 years has been based on the need to secure oil for maintaining our lifestyle. We can’t afford that anymore, and foreign policy needs a complete overhaul if we are to have any future. This isn’t about them and their personalities, it’s about us and the US.

Comment by John Bloom

This is in response to Senator Barack Obama being upset at the McCain Campaign’s charge that this race will be decided not about the issues but about HIM. This is so true, because it is HIS inexperience in BOTH EXECUTIVE and FOREIGN Policy that makes this election about him. Consider these two examples of Senator Obama’s ARROGANCE and IGNORANACE: Senator Obama made a statement and admission that the Troop Surge did WORK beyond anybody’s wildest dreams, maybe his dreams, but certainly NOT Senator John McCain’s dreams. Then while Senator McCain is strongly condemning Russia’s aggression toward the country of Georgia, he make the suggestion to take it to the United Nations Security Council, which even I know has VETO authority.
There has never been a man or woman so UNQUALIFIED for President of the United States than Barack Obama. Senator Hillary Clinton’s biggest error was not taking the fight to Senator Barack Obama and focusing on HIM and NOT the issues. Senator McCain will not repeat the mistakes of the past (Hillary’s campaign) HIS POOR judgment, his lack of both EXECUTIVE(Community Organizer, State Senator (8 years) and Senator (< 4 years and of that spent 18 months running his campaign for President) and Foreign Policy experience (Governor Sarah Palin visited Alaska’s National Guard Troops in Kuwait, not because she NEEDED to visit them but because she considered it part of her job as Governor, and she did NOT make any Campaign trips – it was all business). Senator John McCain’s core supporters, such as myself, support his HONESTY, his JUDGMENT, his EXPERIENCE (as a PROVEN Leader) and his Policies in THAT ORDER. Others I hope and pray will also place more importance on the HONESTY, JUDGMENT and EXPERIENCE than they do about Policies. Yes, Barack this campaign is about YOU and YOUR RECORD, YOUR HONESTY, YOUR JUDGMENT, YOUR EXPERIENCE and lack thereof in all of these Character Traits.

Comment by philip chan

I enjoyed Rudy Guiliani’s talk about 2 persons applying for the Job (forgetting the label R or D.).

At the interview, person A has experience and records. Person B has no experience and no records. Person B knows that person A is also applying. Since person B also knows Person A has good records, he tries to say something bad about person A’s family. Even though person A knows the bad records of person B’s family he chooses not to say bad things about them. Instead person A just focus on mentioning the facts about person B that is person B’s experience is not enough and his policies is lacking.

I would employ person A (John Mccain) anytime!

John Mccain has both personality plus good solutions for issues.
Obama is lacking in both.

What a shame….All I’m reading is nothing but pure hate and hypocrisy from some people in this blog. Disagreeing is ok. Some of you all truly hate OBAMA-that’s ignorance. There’s no rationalizing racism. Too bad people would never say the things they are saying here to people in public or for that matter, to another black person. COWARDS. There’s a lot of racism here, and many are too blind to see it. CAN SOMEONE LOOK UP THE DEFINITION OF INSANITY??? I BELIEVE IT’S DOING THE SAME THING OVER AND OVER EXPECTING TO GET A DIFFERENT RESULT.

Also hypocrisy.. This is exactly what’s happening now. Let’s focus on the ACTUAL POLICY HERE, and not make this a race about PERSONALITY as McCain’s own camp self-admittedly wants you to do? MCPAIN when first running for president in 2000, said the Bush round of tax cuts would empower the rich, hurt the middle class, and balloon the federal deficit. He was exactly right! now to pander to get elected is being the hypocrite. The fact is McCain is the one who has to raise the taxes to cut the deficit. Now McCain is only talking about raising taxes for the wealthy and rich. Be careful of a straightalking politician who tells you what you want to hear instead of the truth. REMEMBER THE LINE…READ MY LIPS, NO MORE TAXES…WHAT FOLLOWED SHORTLY AFTER???

Obama is telling you the truth, it’s just the hate and ignorance that’s is blocking your ability to open your eyes and ears. Obama is telling you that he wants to lower most Americans taxes, but there are some that will have to contribute. That’s the truth. He’s not lying to you to tell you what you want to hear. But you want lies. REMEMBER THE FIRST STRAIGHTALKING WAR LOVING PRESIDENT-BUSH? McCain is an American and wraps himself around the flag as though he’s the messiah. McCain pointing out Obama’s popularity is jealousy. Don’t fall for it again. McCain voting against the troops and he supposedly loves them? How ironic! And this Palin chick. Don’t get me started…she’s under investigation for allegedly doing the same thing she was known for doing. I’m sick of these politicians calling the kettle black.

McCain will do exactly what he’s been doing for 27 years. McCain will Bomb Russia, Iran, and Packistan all in his first four years.. Just watch. Oh, and his answer for energy is just to DRILL, DRILL, BABY, DRILL??? That’s not change. WE’ve been drilling since we discovered oil. Can’t teach a old dog new tricks. The only thing AMERICA HASN”T DONE IS RENEWABLE AND ALTERNATIVE ENERGY. SO AGAIN, I SAY, WE ARE DOING THE SAME THING OVER AND OVER AGAIN, EXPECTING TO GET A DIFFERENT RESULT. THATS NOT THE ANSWER! IF WE DON’T CHANGE WE ARE IN TROUBLE.

I hate to break the news to “y’all” — but Southerners believe Biden should be the Democratc Presidential nominee (not the VP). Sorry to break the news.

Biden on Obama: “I think he can be ready, but right now I don’t believe he is. The presidency is not something that lends itself to on-the-job training.”

OBAMA WAS NOT VETTED — THE DNC AND BIASED MEDIA HID HIS SORDID PAST UNTIL OVER HALF OF AMERICA HAD VOTED. HE HIRED ATTORNEYS TO STOP THE VOTES FROM COUNTING IN FLORIDA AND MICHIGAN. THEY STABBED HILLARY IN THE BACK. HE HAS WRITTEN TWO BOOKS — ABOUT “HIMSELF”! DID HE TAKE HIS GREEK TEMPLE HOME WITH HIM?

NOW — THEY’RE AFTER SARAH PALIN. IT WON’T WORK. SHE IS GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF ALASKA — TALK ABOUT LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE! THE HEARTLAND OF AMERICA WON’T LET THEM BASH HER. WE LOVE HER. SHE IS A BREATH OF FRESH AIR. SHE REPRESENTS TRUTH AND CHANGE WE CAN BELIEVE IN. SHE UNDERSTANDS THE REAL WORLD.

McCAIN HAS WORKED FOR AMERICANS ALL OF HIS ADULT LIFE. HE HAS MORE EXPERIENCE AS WELL AS GOOD JUDGMENT. McCAIN MADE THE RIGHT CHOICE IN SARAH PALIN FOR VP.

I’M VOTING FOR McCAIN / PALIN IN 2008.

As a doc, my federal + state taxes will increase from 40.3% (2007 actual) to 55% under Obama.

Mr. Obama, I have a modest proposal for you. Take the top 5% of workers, round them up in a pen, and harvest all of their organs - pancreas, kidneys, liver, corneas, lungs, etc - for distribution to the lower 95% of wage-earners. This will tremendously alleviate a huge amount of suffering of people waiting for organ transplants. Moreover, any leftover organs can be sold on international markets to help fund free health care for the 95% of lower wage-earners. It is clearly the greatest good for the greatest number of people and highly utilitarian. A sacrifice by the top 5% will result in a tremendous amount of good for the remaining 95%.

Obama is a hypocrite. Here is what he quoted in a speech:
“I think I’ve got a pretty good personality, but that’s not why I am running for president. I’m running for president to put people back to work, to give them health care, to make them have college that’s affordable. This is not a personality contest!” he exclaimed.

IF that were the case then why was he pursuing his “parting of the sea” tour. He was elected to his position of presidential candidate ONLY on his personality. Whenever John McCain wanted to debate any issues with him he wouldn’t commit to not even ONE,,,only the amount of debates that are mandatory. To say that McCain is avoiding the “issues” is two faced of him, he is definitely afraid of facing a debate with a real politician. It takes more than a “pretty good personality” to run a country. Where is his experience? Easily answered by saying “there is none”.

Yep, it was pretty apparent from Palin’s convention speech which was long on smug, sarcastic self-indulgence and short on substance. McCain/Palin HAS to be all about personalities, because they know that if the election is decided based on what each candidate stands for, the vast majority of the American public will want no part of the GOP platform.

Einstein said that insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. McCain’s economic policy is a virtual copy of the Bush administration’s policies of the past 8 years. But then, McCain has already acknowledged that he doesn’t know anything about economics…

Gosh why should we worry about Barack’s American hating “friends”? Or the fact that he refuses to put his hand on his heart while the Nat’l Anthem is being played? Is this who you really want running our country???? Can you imagine who might show up at the White House if he ever, God forbid, gets elected?

Barack and Michelle must go to sleep every night laughing about how dumb every Democrat is who just listen to his “change” speeches and actually think he will make their lives better. Wake up Democrats! You think like a bunch of hypnotized lemmings when it comes to politics. Every Democrat I know refuses to even watch the RNC or any of the Republican speeches. My husband and I watch all of it because, if we actually thought the Dems offered the truth, we might consider voting for them. So far, no truth; just hot air about how bad the U.S. is and how they are going to be “God” and fix everything. At what price?

McCain-Palin in 2009!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Let’s vote for some real people!

I can’t believe you right wingers. Gov.Palin is a whinner. The right wingers quickly started talking up the sexism card. What a bunch of hypocrite all of you have turned out to be. Check out this video with your own correspondence talking about the sexism issue and the GENDER CARD. Here is Cindy McCain talking about the media and sexism.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NXP91AuJekU

She calls Gov. Palin a babe. Yea, that the way to correct the issue. Now who is talking sexism. This is how you combat the sexism issue by calling her a babe? Now how about the fact that several Republican Congresswoman and female politicians ran to Gov. Palin’s defense talking about the sexism. Yet the Governor stated that woman shouldn’t complain about being confronted by the media regarding the issue. Also check out what Karl Rove and Bill O’Reilly say in this next clip

I enjoyed seeing some intellingence on here pointing the finger at the candidate that is less qualified to be president, congradulations there for ya. Now for September 6th, Real Talk,,,you must be insane. McCain is not talking about raising taxes but NOT raising taxes at all. It is your buddy Obama who is planning on raising the taxes for the rich and businesses. Obama also changes his mind so much it is hard to know what his “truth” is. Oh and Obama is the messiah not McCain. Your jealousy over Palen is obvious also. After all she has taken way some of the “star” quality from Obama. As for drilling for oil, tell me why Pelosi (a real unpopular democrat right now) is NOW telling the oil companies to “resume” drilling where they started and quit. And lastly McCain has NEVER voted against the troops and never will. Now for labman 57, at least Palen (along with McCain) are not arrogent like your good buddy Obama.

I hope Americans, particullarly republicans, look at the issues instead of getting caught up in personality or lack thereof. The bottom line is the republican party has been running this country for the past 8 years - now all of a sudden - Mccain feels he is different from Bush. He has all of the same theories about the ecomony, abortion, health insurance, war, etc.. Republicans don’t want to discuss the fact that this war was a mistake - they only want to talk about the surge and how Barack voted against it. So what if he voted against it - if he was president we wouldn’t be in this senseless war in the first place. Secondly, Mccain is a womanizer and it is known by his friends and foes that he has a temper and a bad decision maker. Noone wants to talk about the way he left his first wife when she was critically injured and disfigured in an accident. When he returned home from the military he cheated on her while she was fighting for life. Not only did he cheat on her, he left her for Cindy Mccain! Why is noone talking about this?
If he likes women so much why did he treat his first wife so bad and why is he known by his closest friends as being a “lady’s man”? I think it’s insulting how some women are supporting him because he picked a woman and not because they agree with what he stands for - which is Nothing.
Bottom Line - he wants to cut taxes for companies not the average american in hopes that it will create jobs. News Flash - this won’t work. When the middle class is in economic crisis they do not consume goods/services. Put the money in the hands of the people directly and they’ll spend it. Just like Barack proposes to do by giving tax cuts to 95% of Americans.
PEOPLE WAKE UP!!!!!

I am a resident of Wasilla, Alaska. I have known Sarah since 1992. Everyone here knows Sarah, so it is nothing special to say we are on a first-name basis. Our children have attended the same schools. Her father was my child’s favorite substitute teacher. I also am on a first name basis with her parents and mother-in-law. I attended more City Council meetings during her administration than about 99% of the residents of the city.

She is enormously popular; in every way she’s like the most popular girl in middle school. Even men who think she is a poor choice and won’t vote for her can’t quit smiling when talking about her because she is a “babe”.

It is astonishing and almost scary how well she can keep a secret. She kept her most recent pregnancy a secret from her children and parents for seven months.

She is “pro-life”. She recently gave birth to a Down’s syndrome baby. There is no cover-up involved, here; Trig is her baby.

She is energetic and hardworking. She regularly worked out at the gym.

She is savvy. She doesn’t take positions; she just “puts things out there” and if they prove to be popular, then she takes credit.

Her husband works a union job on the North Slope for BP and is a champion snowmobile racer. Todd Palin’s kind of job is highly sought-after because of the schedule and high pay. He arranges his work schedule so he can fish for salmon in Bristol Bay for a month or so in summer, but by no stretch of the imagination is fishing their major source of income. Nor has her life-style ever been anything like that of native Alaskans.

Sarah and her whole family are avid hunters.

She’s smart.

Her experience is as mayor of a city with a population of about 5,000 (at the time), and less than 2 years as governor of a state with about 670,000 residents.

During her mayoral administration most of the actual work of running this small city was turned over to an administrator. She had been pushed to hire this administrator by party power-brokers after she had gotten herself into some trouble over precipitous firings which had given rise to a recall campaign.

Sarah campaigned in Wasilla as a “fiscal conservative”. During her 6 years as Mayor, she increased general government expenditures by over 33%. During those same 6 years the amount of taxes collected by the City increased by 38%. This was during a period of low inflation (1996-2002). She reduced progressive property taxes and increased a regressive sales tax which taxed even food. The tax cuts that she promoted benefited large corporate property owners way more than they benefited residents.

The huge increases in tax revenues during her mayoral administration weren’t enough to fund everything on her wish list though, borrowed money was needed, too. She inherited a city with zero debt, but left it with indebtedness of over $22 million. What did Mayor Palin encourage the voters to borrow money for? Was it the infrastructure that she said she supported? The sewage treatment plant that the city lacked? or a new library? No. $1m for a park. $15m-plus for construction of a multi-use sports complex which she rushed through to build on a piece of property that the City didn’t even have clear title to, that was still in litigation 7 yrs later–to the delight of the lawyers involved! The sports complex itself is a nice addition to the community but a huge money pit, not the profit-generator she claimed it would be. She also supported bonds for $5.5m for road projects that could have been done in 5-7 yrs without any borrowing.

While Mayor, City Hall was extensively remodeled and her office redecorated more than once.

These are small numbers, but Wasilla is a very small city.

As an oil producer, the high price of oil has created a budget surplus in Alaska. Rather than invest this surplus in technology that will make us energy independent and increase efficiency, as Governor she proposed distribution of this surplus to every individual in the state.

In this time of record state revenues and budget surpluses, she recommended that the state borrow/bond for road projects, even while she proposed distribution of surplus state revenues: spend today’s surplus, borrow for needs.

She’s not very tolerant of divergent opinions or open to outside ideas or compromise. As Mayor, she fought ideas that weren’t generated by her or her staff. Ideas weren’t evaluated on their merits, but on the basis of who proposed them.

While Sarah was Mayor of Wasilla she tried to fire our highly respected City Librarian because the Librarian refused to consider removing from the library some books that Sarah wanted removed. City residents rallied to the defense of the City Librarian and against Palin’s attempt at out-and-out censorship, so Palin backed down and withdrew her termination letter. People who fought her attempt to oust the Librarian are on her enemies list to this day.

Sarah complained about the “old boy’s club” when she first ran for Mayor, so what did she bring Wasilla? A new set of “old boys”. Palin fired most of the experienced staff she inherited. At the City and as Governor she hired or elevated new, inexperienced, obscure people, creating a staff totally dependent on her for their jobs and eternally grateful and fiercely loyal–loyal to the point of abusing their power to further her personal agenda, as she has acknowledged happened in the case of pressuring the State’s top cop (see below).

As Mayor, Sarah fired Wasilla’s Police Chief because he “intimidated” her, she told the press. As Governor, her recent firing of Alaska’s top cop has the ring of familiarity about it. He served at her pleasure and she had every legal right to fire him, but it’s pretty clear that an important factor in her decision to fire him was because he wouldn’t fire her sister’s ex-husband, a State Trooper. Under investigation for abuse of power, she has had to admit that more than 2 dozen contacts were made between her staff and family to the person that she later fired, pressuring him to fire her ex-brother-in-law. She tried to replace the man she fired with a man who she knew had been reprimanded for sexual harassment; when this caused a public furor, she withdrew her support.

She has bitten the hand of every person who extended theirs to her in help. The City Council person who personally escorted her around town introducing her to voters when she first ran for Wasilla City Council became one of her first targets when she was later elected Mayor. She abruptly fired her loyal City Administrator; even people who didn’t like the guy were stunned by this ruthlessness.

Fear of retribution has kept all of these people from saying anything publicly about her.

When then-Governor Murkowski was handing out political plums, Sarah got the best, Chair of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission: one of the few jobs not in Juneau and one of the best paid. She had no background in oil & gas issues. Within months of scoring this great job which paid $122,400/yr, she was complaining in the press about the high salary. I was told that she hated that job: the commute, the structured hours, the work. Sarah became aware that a member of this Commission (who was also the State Chair of the Republican Party) engaged in unethical behavior on the job. In a gutsy move which some undoubtedly cautioned her could be political suicide, Sarah solved all her problems in one fell swoop: got out of the job she hated and garnered gobs of media attention as the patron saint of ethics and as a gutsy fighter against the “old boys’ club” when she dramatically quit, exposing this man’s ethics violations (for which he was fined).

As Mayor, she had her hand stuck out as far as anyone for pork from Senator Ted Stevens. Lately, she has castigated his pork-barrel politics and publicly humiliated him. She only opposed the “bridge to nowhere” after it became clear that it would be unwise not to.

As Governor, she gave the Legislature no direction and budget guidelines, then made a big grandstand display of line-item vetoing projects, calling them pork. Public outcry and further legislative action restored most of these projects — which had been vetoed simply because she was not aware of their importance — but with the unobservant she had gained a reputation as “anti-pork”.

She is solidly Republican: no political maverick. The State party leaders hate her because she has bit them in the back and humiliated them. Other members of the party object to her self-description as a fiscal conservative.

Around Wasilla there are people who went to high school with Sarah. They call her “Sarah Barracuda” because of her unbridled ambition and predatory ruthlessness. Before she became so powerful, very ugly stories circulated around town about shenanigans she pulled to be made point guard on the high school basketball team. When Sarah’s mother-in-law, a highly respected member of the community and experienced manager, ran for Mayor, Sarah refused to endorse her.

As Governor, she stepped outside of the box and put together of package of legislation known as “AGIA” that forced the oil companies to march to the beat of her drum.

Like most Alaskans, she favors drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. She has questioned if the loss of sea ice is linked to global warming. She campaigned “as a private citizen” against a state initiative that would have either a) protected salmon streams from pollution from mines, or b) tied up in the courts all mining in the state (depending on who you listen to). She has pushed the State’s lawsuit against the Dept. of the Interior’s decision to list polar bears as threatened species.

McCain is the oldest person to ever run for President; Sarah will be a heartbeat away from being President.

There has to be literally millions of Americans who are more knowledgeable and experienced than she.

However, there’s a lot of people who have underestimated her and are regretting it.

CLAIM vs. FACT:

Hockey mom: True for a few years.
PTA mom: True years ago when her first-born was in elementary school, not since.
NRA supporter: Absolutely true.
Social conservative: Mixed. Opposes gay marriage, BUT vetoed a bill that would have denied benefits to employees in same-sex relationships (said she did this because it was unconstitutional).
Pro-creationism: Mixed. Supports it, BUT did nothing as Governor to promote it.
Pro-life: Mixed. Knowingly gave birth to a Down’s syndrome baby BUT declined to call a special legislative session on some pro-life legislation.
Experienced: Some high schools have more students than Wasilla has residents. Many cities have more residents than the state of Alaska. No legislative experience other than City Council. Little hands-on supervisory or managerial experience; needed help of a city administrator to run town of about 5,000
Political maverick: Not at all.
Gutsy: Absolutely!
Open & transparent: ??? Good at keeping secrets. Not good at explaining actions.
Has a developed philosophy of public policy: No.
A “Greenie”: No. Turned Wasilla into a wasteland of big box stores and disconnected parking lots. Is pro-drilling off-shore and in ANWR.
Fiscal conservative: Not by my definition!
Pro-infrastructure: No. Promoted a sports complex and park in a city without a sewage treatment plant or storm drainage system. Built streets to early 20th century standards.
Pro-tax relief: Lowered taxes for businesses, increased tax burden on residents.
Pro-small government: No. Oversaw greatest expansion of city government in Wasilla’s history.
Pro-labor/pro-union: No. Just because her husband works union doesn’t make her pro-labor. I have seen nothing to support any claim that she is pro-labor/pro-union.

WHY AM I WRITING THIS?

First, I have long believed in the importance of being an informed voter. I am a voter registrar. For 10 years I put on student voting programs in the schools. If you google my name (Anne Kilkenny + Alaska), you will find references to my participation in local government, education, and PTA/parent organizations.

Secondly, I’ve always operated in the belief that “Bad things happen when good people stay silent”. Few people know as much as I do because few have gone to as many City Council meetings.

Third, I am just a housewife. I don’t have a job she can bump me out of. I don’t belong to any organization that she can hurt. But, I am no fool; she is immensely popular here, and it is likely that this will cost me somehow in the future: that’s life.

Fourth, she has hated me since back in 1996, when I was one of the 100 or so people who rallied to support the City Librarian against Sarah’s attempt at censorship.

Fifth, I looked around and realized that everybody else was afraid to say anything because they were somehow vulnerable.

CAVEATS:

I am not a statistician. I developed the numbers for the increase in spending & taxation 2 years ago (when Palin was running for Governor) from information supplied to me by the Finance Director of the City of Wasilla, and I can’t recall exactly what I adjusted for: did I adjust for inflation? for population increases? Right now, it is impossible for a private person to get any info out of City Hall–they are swamped. So I can’t verify my numbers.

You may have noticed that there are various numbers circulating for the population of Wasilla, ranging from my “about 5,000″, up to 9,000. The day Palin’s selection was announced a city official told me that the current population is about 7,000. The official 2000 census count was 5,460. I have used about 5,000 because Palin was Mayor from 1996 to 2002, and the city was growing rapidly in the mid-90’s.

I will add I doubt if this will be printed in the comment section of Fox News. I don’t consider you to be as fair and balanced as you say.

The Republicans can’t run on the issues and expect to win this election. I watched the Republican Convention and they focused all of their attention on slamming Obama. Where was the substance? This is so typical of the Republicans….its all about fear and smear tactics. I guess when you have nothing good to say about your own policies just attack your opponents character. How classy.

I agree, this has been about personality or Obama would not be where he is. How many capable people pointed out his inexperience including his running mate? I have said all along that majority of Obama supporters treat the presidential election like it is American Idol. What are they gonna do if Obama is elected and the country is in dire crisis because by electing Obama you can guarantee it will be. I guess Obama will play a game of “horse” with a leader of one of these small “not a threat” countries like Iran to settle the nuclear threat! I guess America is so wraped up in “superstars” it was only a matter of time before this would happen.

Lets talk about judgement! Wright,Soros,Farrakhan, Ayres,???? BAD judgement!!!! And this is supposed to be a smart, college graduate?? If he cant pick a decent church,or business accociates, how can he expect us to trust his judgements when it comes to running our country?
He might be book smart, he may be a great speaker, but at the very least,,you should be able to have enough common sense about the people in your personal life. This isn’t Hollywood, or a fairy tale,,where you can TALK a happy ending. I’m voting McCain/Palin, because they have good judgement, can make a decision and stick to it, BELIEVES what they say and not worried what the media or anyone else thinks. They ARE true leaders!

The entire population of America should rejoice and welcome, instead of condemn John McCain’s pick Sarah Palin for Vice President of United States of America, and I’ll tell you why…

The Autism Society also states that one to 1.5 million Americans have autism, a number derived by applying the CDC range of prevalence among children to an estimate of the general U.S. population of 300 million (and then applying some major rounding). Other

Groups, cite a prevalence of 1.7 million, which is based on the most recent decennial census’s estimate of 280 million Americans.

Given the recent mushrooming numbers of children being diagnosed with Autism in the United States, it would truly be to our advantage to have both Sarah Palin and Cindy McCain as advocates in the White House. Their personal life experiences as mothers to developmentally disabled children would be an asset to the 1.5 to 1.7 autistic American children and parents alone, who daily need compassion and resources to cope with the challenges of every-day life. Factor in the millions of handicapped and chronically ill children and understand that it will take these two women, these two mothers.

Working on Sarah Palin’s gubernatorial campaign, I am as proud now as I was then to see the first female Governor for Alaska and the first female Vice President nominated by the Republican Party. I now live in Wyoming, moving here from Alaska in May 2008. I have seen the Alaskan politics up close and personal, now I watch from afar, ever proud in the changes that Sarah Palin made in the state and local politics arena, given this, the Vice President office will prove to be a well fit stiletto for Governor Palin to march on Washington.

The Republicans know they cannot win the election on issues. They want to distract voters with McCain’s Military career, Palin’s gender and Obama’s associations.

Chris Cillizza, in his Washington Post blog writes, “ In reaction to Rick Davis’ comments about the election not being about issues.” He also wrote “Rick Davis, campaign manager for John McCain’s presidential bid, insisted that the presidential race will be decided more over personalities than issues during an interview with Post editors this morning.

Watch the video of the discussion yourself.
Rick Davis said “This election is not about issues,” “This election is about a composite view of what people take away from these candidates.” He describes a composite view as being the candidate’s values, character, opinions and principles. Mr. Davis also says that obviously issues have a big bearing on your discussion for a president.
The word personalities is Cillizza’s and Obama’s’, not Davis’s.
A composite view is not ones personality. It is ones center, the place where decisions emanate
If Chris Cillizza and Obama think values, character, opinions and principles are your personality, they really are very hollow individuals.
