Obama Camp: What About the Economy?

Responding to speeches given by President Bush, Fred Thompson, and Joe Lieberman, the Obama camp released the following statement:

“At a time when millions of Americans are struggling like never before to pay their mortgage, their medical bills, and their gas bills, tonight’s speakers at John McCain’s Republican convention proved how out of touch their candidate is by saying not one word about his plans to put our economy back on track and provide real relief to middle-class families. Apparently, John McCain’s belief that we’ve made ‘great progress’ economically over the last eight years means he doesn’t have to offer any plans at all to fix our ailing economy,” said Obama campaign spokesman Tommy Vietor.

If there was a presidential race between Palin and Obama, i’d vote for Palin!!!! I believe she has done more with her state “Alaska” than Obama has in his term as Senator to her 2 years as Governor. I’d like to say that i am of male preference and really did not believe female’s are not really to carry the title “Commander in Chief”, but i do believe this woman would do a better job if needed than Obama when it come’s to the specific job. I think she is very outspoken and a go getter and not hooked on politic’s like the rest are.

Obama is just confused. Since he hasn’t done anything significant in his life they skipped over the biography night in the Democratic convention. Hopefully he learned something tonight about what service is all about hearing about John McCain’s service to this nation.

Comment by other Bill C

Hey, (Obama) Campers, John McCain didn’t “offer any plans” about the economy because…..John McCain wasn’t speaking that night. Did your candidate open his convention? The aforementioned speakers were probably going to let McCain have something to talk about, so they didn’t preview his acceptance speech. But I don’t blame you for wanting to distract everyone away from people who can admire his character and abilities. He was a thorn in the side of Republicans when he disagreed with them. Two of the three speakers alluded to times they’ve found him to be difficult. Yet, they all admire his independence in not riding the party bandwagon if the issue in question went against his better judgement. Most Republican voters only heard about McCain when he disagreed with another Republican. But unlike other Senators - Hagel - he didn’t do it for the attention.

Every four years, both parties talk about how this is the most important election ever and how their candidate is the Candidate Of Change. John McCain will fix what’s broken. Campers, wait a little while longer.

Why is it that the left and their candidates never seem to hear the plans to: drill for oil, lessen taxes, cut spending, rely less on government, invest in technology, as a way to spur the economy. Every time that has happened the economy has benefitted. This was a very poor and weak reaction to the evening in my humble opinion.

When Senator McCain chose Governor Palin, he obviously thought that she would be suitable as President of the United States of America should his ill health do him in. Are you kidding me? President Palin? On the other hand, President Biden isn’t such a stretch. The Republicans are in trouble with the choice of Gov. Palin. And speaking of experience, one of the cornerstones of the Republican campaign strategies is to berate Senator Obama’s lack of experience to be commander in chief. Hey, at least he’s been in the Senate. Think back to 2000 when the current big-oil imbecile was elected: his experience to be commander in chief consisted of his daddy getting him out of serving in Viet Nam. He was a lousy governor and a failed businessman (see: Texas Rangers baseball) with no experience in Washington whatsoever. The only thing he was qualified for, based upon experience, was to be the nation’s drug czar, if y’all catch my drift.

I think that Obama is going to be horrible if he becomes president. Hes to lienant on everything. He thinks he can make America better. He needs to prove it. He talks about how Bush and McCain are going to or is making it worst. I dont think so I think he needs to get his head out of the clouds for once and look at reality. He needs to prove himself. McCain has a lot more experince and has been in the government thing a lot longer than he has.

Comment by Rudy NYC

Sen. Thompson stopped short of saying that the economy was in good shape, but strong implications were there. He is as out of touch as they come. I remember watching him forget questions during debates last year.

Sen. Lieberman is an American dedicated to the preservation of Israel. I’m not knocking Israel, but I am knocking a guy who puts Israel first, not America. It is the common thread behind all he has said and done over the past 8 years. “Bomb, bomb, Iran.” See what I mean.

This is politics as usual from Obama. Obama knows that conventions don’t get into specific economic policy. And if anyone will get into specifics it will be the candidate at the head of the ticket. Obama only offered a glimpse of his economic plan at his own convention. Obama’s plan of going after the “top 5%” of personal income as well as raising taxes on big corporations appeals to many people. The main problem I have with Obama’s tax plan is that I get the impression he wants to increase tax revenues to lower the deficit. We don’t have a deficit because of Bush’s tax cuts we have a deficit because of Washington’s spending. The tax cuts actually increased tax revenues. Any increase on taxes especially for top earners and corporations will certainly decrease tax revenues for Washington. If Obama just wants to shift the tax burden and has plans for scaling back spending then I have no problem with his plan but I don’t get the impression or at least he hasn’t talked about the programs he will cut or scale back. The debates hopefully will clear alot of this up for the people who are not waving pom poms for either candidate.

Comment by JD

I agree Economy is the #1 issue. It should have been addressed more than Thompson covered. I wonder about Thompson’s words though. Corporate america doesnt pay taxes anyway. They manage down their bottom line…to avoid paying any tax at all.. I see it everyday…whats furthur or continuing cuts going to benefit?

I dont know I think the middle class should get some attention and relief or its doomsday for the GOP. We at least get to choose what groceries we buy and how much gas we use. If the prices rise becasue of no corporate tax cuts I’d be happier with green in my pocket.

Comment by Joe

What do you expect? A circus!!! We had that already with the Democrat convention, a group of people trying to entertain the public with the misconception that good talk will help the economy. I say, show me something positive that Obama has done other than say that he can do the job… He’s been saying that he can make a difference and all we know is that he’s been saying that for the past two years instead of working as a Senator where we still don’t know what he has done… By the way, instead of trying to keep your kids awake on what you say is a boring convention you should be teaching them about humanity. Our brothers to the south just had a major storm and what the Republicans did Monday and Tuesday was to put the needs of human being on top of their agenda, this is not a time to play clown in a three ring circus but to help our fellow Americans.

“Apparently, John McCain’s belief that we’ve made ‘great progress’ economically over the last eight years means he doesn’t have to offer any plans at all to fix our ailing economy,”
Apparently democrats didn’t watch the convention because John McCain wasn’t the one speaking last night!
I didn’t hear Obama say much about the economy other than he’s going to give everyone money and the way he plans to do that is by taking money away from rich people and businesses and giving it to the government. Hmmmmm???? That’s been tried before in the Soviet Union…. I didn’t work. If we tax businesses then that will hurt profits which will hurt paychecks of the people employed EVERYDAY AMERICANS! Sorry Obama, YOU don’t get it.

Comment by chuck

If you want higher taxes, no constitutional rights, no freedom and no national security, vote Obama/Biden.

Comment by VoR

Nothing like a good response from the Obama camp halfway through the convention. This is like saying it doesnt matter how many home runs Barry Bonds hit, how many touchdowns did he score? Just completely off base and not relavent. So far it has been about getting to know the candidate, which the democrats dont want you to know anything more about Obama (rev. Wright, Bill Ayers, Johnny Rezko, etc. - you can only cover up so much)
Sounds to me like the democrats want to continue to “dumb down” America, lets make the conventions about big stage shows to get people to watch, as there is no need to have any real substance. they remind me of Milli Vanilli - nice stage show, but in the end, just lip service.

Comment by chuck

Obama camp is running scared. Can’t think of anything truthful that would disqualify McCain or Palin as leaders of our country so they must resort to fabrications.

Lets go positive in campaigning. This will be quite a challenge for Obama we know. How about if Obama/Biden list (honestly) their qualifications and the dem platform and McCain/Palin do the same. Will there even be a contest? I think not.

Lets do the same with supporters. Let Obama/Biden supporters list what they think their candidates qualifications are and what they say they will do for the people and our country and McCain/Palin supporters list their candidates qualifications what they know they will do for the country and people.

We know this will extremely one-sided; the direction to be defined as to whether one is patriot or traitor.

Half the problem with the economy is the mainstream media talking it down. Ain’t it funny that any problem is a crisis if a Republican is in the white house. These same clowns were praising the economy under clinton. “The envy of the world… a juggernaut” they said when in fact it was a house of cards. Bush recognized the problem prior to taking office and was immediately attacked by the media for say so. We went through 9/11, media-fueled mortgage problems and oil price hikes and we’re still holding our own. Things could be better, sure but not if the nay-sayers in the mainstream media and the tax-loving socialists in BO’s party have their way.

Comment by Jeff

What about the economy BO? Do you plan on taxing us into prosperity? Idiot!

Comment by Tom Kaye

Service to the country was the theme.

However, Ms. Palin and her husband have been members or at least had ties to an Alaska Indepence Party that wants to secede from the United States.

PS: She also tried to intimidate an Alaskan Librarian to remove books that she felt were not appropriate!

How un-American can that be!

Comment by Voting for Change

Here is some Republican laughter. I believe that the McCain/Palin’s strategy for our future should come from THEM. Hello? Did Hillary and Bill talk about the BO strategy? Of course not. They could barely get over their own hurt feelings to even talk about BO. Thompson and Liebermann were there to fire up the crowd and set the stage for Palin and McCain.

Tried to get the young kids to watch and it was boring? Are you voting for someone to get an Academy Award? A Grammy? This is the vote for the PRESIDENT of the UNITED STATES. Have you ever thought about the fact that OB needs to host a rock concert with lots of Hollywood stars in order to get people fired up? How shallow is our country? I am tired of the flash and distract tactics of the OB camp. I am voting for the candidates that are “boring” and have proven they can get the job done.

I am 26, own my own home, have a nice car, good job, great education, and guess what, NO DEBT!!! It’s called being responsible America, we should all try it. Yes that means not buying something with plastic that your going to ignore in three days. Don’t by a 7000 sq foot house when you can only afford 3000, really is it that tough of a choice to make? Its called living within our means until we can figure out this energy crisis. Obama wants to hand us money and have us rely on the feds for help, well no thanks, they called that the Soviet Union buddy. I am not interested in giving my hard earned tax dollars to some fool who won’t get a job, and his excuse is “the economy is bad”. START A BUSINESS!!!

Comment by james

I guess the fact that the theme was SERVICE means nothing to the liberal democrats posting on this site who wouldn’t know anything about serving our country. They are too busy being a part of the me, me, me generation. Stop whining! You couldn’t appreciate what heroism is because you support a candidate who all of a sudden became patriotic when his true colors were exposed during the primary. Give me break! Obama’s 143 days in the senate and according to him,”running a campaign” is all the experience he has. When has Obama ever worked with the Republicans on anything? More division is what will happen. At least McCain has a record of working with Democrats. Obama is not the savior, the “one we have all been waiting for” or anything like that. He is arrogant just like his running mate. But I guess the unpopular democratic Congress (more unpopular than Bush by the way) has a true leader in Obama. What a joke. I for one, can make up my own mind rather than have the media do it for me.

Comment by surfklutz

If democrats are worried about jobs they need to listen very carefully to what Obama is saying. Every ecomonic plan he has dared bared will be bad for the economy - and bad for jobs. You can not tax corporations more and expect job growth. You can’t tax gas companies more and expect them not to pass the price on to consumers. You can’t tax the weathly more unless you want them to cut back on jobs they may offer.

A massive announcement that we are going to drill everywhere we can will immediately make high paying jobs - You want jobs - you better not look to Obama.

McCain didn’t talk about economy because duh…he has had his speech yet…last night was to enforce McCain’s strengths by people who know him!!!!! It is a shame people didn’t feel inspired by the patriotic nature and service to our country…shame on those who say it doesn’t apply to young people just old????? Our country cannot survive unless the young people start to feel more “country first” and ready to serve like so many “all volunteer” service members of all ages do now.
I’m hoping Palin hits one out of the convention center to shut up all the obnoxious articles the media is overreacting to her home life. They never seem to remember she has a husband who is a partner and supporter so therefore her children are part of a FAMILY!!!! You never hear about the male politicians not being a parent because of their job….this is ridiculous and is not appropriate..let us move on to the issues. The debates will show who is ready to be “commander in Chief”.
Maybe Obama can tell us how he is going to pay for all these new freebies????? Seems to me if he is worried about the economy he wouldn’t be raising taxes??? It is evident that tax cuts work and help stimulate the economy. People need to learn to live within their means!!!

Comment by stanford

I think Fred said it best. If You think things cost a lot now Just see what change can do when you tax corp. and oil companies. When people see what happens when small business has to pay for health care and pay higher wages then they go out of business. Look at our new and changed congress that this country put in to place. If you look at what has happened to our country and see that we were not that bad off considering what had happened. I think we should blame our congress for some of what has happened in the last few years. Look at history and see what the real truth is and tell me who we need to blame. I guess as long as people that are not educated and have there left wing views we will always need change I hope the change is not for the worst.

Comment by Kim

I have to agree with Obama’s comment on 60 minutes the republicans may not be good at running the government but they are good politicians. The fact that they can stand there with a straigt face in front of the republican supporters, the rest of America, and the world and act like this country is better off after 8 years of Bush/Cheney is amazing. The fact that if as John McCain says he knew about the young girls pregnancy, they would still throw that family in the spotlight to create a diversion to further divide this country at its most critical time in years. When we are on the brink of a recession and young men and women are losing their lives over a war that was started based on a lie, should really scare the American people. When we should really be taking a serious look at the tough issues that are facing this country instead the media’s attention has been diverted to a young girls pregnancy when all over this country twelve-eighteen year old girls are having babies every day. Only the republican party could and would stoop that low. If they win sure they will be admired for their great politcal feat but it is the American people that will suffer the consequences.

Comment by Michael from Atlanta

The economy is one of the issues of this election and the McCain campaign has acknowledged that they cannot win the election on the issues. The convention so far is all about John McCain’s character. I guess they think that is going to win him votes.

Unfortunately, we all know the story of McCain. We all know how honorable he is. But his campaign has been hijacked by conservative strategist who forced him to select a VP, that has a limited resume’ and was selected only because she might attract some of the Hillary supporters.

Again the McCain campaign forgets about issues, thinking that just because she is female, she will get Hillary supporters. Palin and Hillary are on the opposite side on many issues.

Comment by Noah

I am thoroughly frustrated at Obama for this ridiculous comment. During the entire DNC, no one said one word about the economy until he got up and spoke, and all that was was a group of talking points and soundbytes. Obama needs to get a real argument and stop playing the “John McCain is old and out of touch” card. Tonight was a night of background of John McCain’s life, not talking about his policies in the future. The RNC is about true patriotism and service to our country, not petty mudslinging and name-calling.

We all care about the economy Republicans and Democrats alike. We just have different ideas about how to fix it. Stability in the Middle East will be a great start. Freedom has never been cheap. Leadership of John McCain and Sarah Palin will be right on target. Mr. McCain will be a great teacher for the few areas that Ms. Palin may be slightly behind in. But she is so far ahead of Mr. Obama in all areas that its no contest. The funny thing is she is running for co-pilot and Mr. Obama wants to be the pilot and fly the plane. Um! I will be put my trust in the McCain Camp. They seem to be the only ones who are offering real “Change”. I am a registered Democrat that will volunteer for the McCain-Palin ticket at their local headquarters. My father just rolled over in his grave - but as a veteran he would be appalled at how low the country has sunk.

Comment by Davis

Gee, Barack. My family is a middle-class family. I’m having no problem paying my mortgage, my medical bills and my gas bills. In fact, I’m making more disposable income now then ever before. I have been able to pay off the majority of my debts. Why? Because I made responsible choices in my life. The liberals want everyone to believe that they can have more than they can afford, then swoop in as the saviors. Barack wants to make sure that every child has the opportunity to go to college and be successful, and then in the next breath says that we are going to tax all those who are successful and make over $250,000. Isn’t that counterintuitive? You say you’re not going to raise taxes on the middle-class, but you’ll tax the businesses instead. Well, guess what? I buy products from businesses, and when they’re overhead goes up, guess what? Yep. Prices go up. And when they can no longer afford the overhead, yep, you guessed it, jobs get cut.

How this is going to help the economy is beyond me. It’s time for America to stop buying into this elitist bull, and start looking at the world through rational eyes…

By the way, if Obama was so worried about the average person hit hard by the economy, perhaps he should have decided to donate the millions and millions it cost to erect a Greek Temple to their God (Obama) just so that he can preach to his minions! What a joke!

Comment by Mike

2 years ago the economy was doing very good and the price of gas was $1.75. What happened between then and now? Democrats took complete control of congress, and the price of gas doubled, the housing maket fell apart and the economy crumbled. Nobama did not say one word of his plans for anything in his speech, and none of the others that spoke for him said anything about his “plan”. Why is this? Because he has no plan to help this country on any level.

It sounds like the Democrates are upset that the RNC did not consult with them as to what should be on the program. The arrogance is stunning. It’s only the first night. Remember that this is the Republican (not Demoractic) National Convention. Tell the donkeys to shut up, they had thier turn.

Comment by Don

As usual, the democrats don’t listen because their blind ideology gets in the way of any common sense penetrating their ears and brains. They are quick to criticize and slow to reason. It was clear from Thompson’t speech that he was going to leave the discussion of all the details up to McCain when he gives his speech. Thompson admitted there are challenges and problems we face. There always has been and always will be. The democrats have a gloom and doom perception of the economy. Unlike the Dems, Republicans are optimistic about the future of our economy. Remember when the gloom and doom democrats, including Obama, said the war was lost and we needed to cut and run. Good thing we didn’t listen to the gloom and doomers at that time. We don’t need to follow the gloom and doom Dems now when it comes to the economy and the choice for our next president.

It’s kind of funny that Obama is bashing the Republicans for this when I didn’t hear any of that from them. All Obama and the liberals like to do is bash the conservatives ideas, but not come up with any of their own. That’s easy to do, any joe on the street can do that. The liberals sure don’t put there money where there mouth is. All the liberals want to talk about is how bad things are and how terrible we are. Gets kind of old pretty quick. If anybody listened to Obama’s speech the other night, his answer to economic woes is to creat money out of thin air. Cut taxes for 95% of people, yet institute all of these new governement programs and expand government care? Kind of scary. I wonder if he even took an economic 101 class.

Comment by Catherine

Listen Obama and your minions, people who go out and run up their credit cards, buy houses they cannot afford, take out mortagages they cannot pay, and sit on their butts waiting for you to
‘rescue” them from their fiduciary responsibilities, need to put on their big boy/girl pants and deal with their “self-imposed” problems.

This country does not need a wet nurse for a president.

There are many people in this country who understand living on a budget, many of them are senior citizens who faced far greater challenges in their younger years than people today.

People who live outside their income and expect others to “rescue” them are going to do the same over and over again expecting someone to “rescue” them because they learned nothing from their previous mistakes.

Not only was the theme about service, BUT, its not the place of guest speakers to speak about Mccains plan for the economy, ITS John Mccains place

Comment by Twylla

Yes, what about the economy! Since Democrates took over Congress in 2006: 1. gas prices increased by $1.50-$2.25 now @$3.67. 2. unemployment is up from 4.5% to 5.7%. 3. Congress gets a pay raise for deciding who will cater their food. 4. housing market almost collapses. 5. Banks are collapsing. 6. The dollar is weak. 7. bankruptcy rates up. When will Americans wake up and see that the economy has failed under Congressional Democratic leadership. President Bush is not at fault but Congress. For Obama and the rest of the Dems to admit Congress has failed will never happen, because then they would have to admit that the “Time for a change,” slogan was a lie from the beginning and since they are still running on that platform, failure to change America has to stay at …For the worst, not for the better!

Comment by Grown up

I am sure that John McCain will address the issue of the economy in HIS speech. He is the one running after all. Last night was the first full night of the convention and was intended to show people who John McCain is and what he has done for our country. The liberals are so fired up and scared that they can’t even wait for the actual nominee to speak before bashing him. LOL! It is embarrasing to watch the liberal media make such fools of themselves. They should be ashamed! They will lose this nomination for Obama just by being such a total turn off to Americans.

I am positively believe that Obama knows how to accurately spell the word of “ECONOMY”!
The bottom line is that how much he really knows about it without having the teleprompter when he talks about this subject.
The answer is NONE!
His knowledge on both domestic/foreign affairs and executive experiences are completely hollow and shallow in all it’s aspects!
I haven’t seen any factual records of the “triple A” elements during his career, those three A’s are “A”ccountability, “A”chievement and “A”ccomplishment, which are vitally important to be considered as the core of the experiences. Once again,
he has NONE of any of the said elements but talks, talks and talks giving those illusive speeches to fool the general public.
It’s still enough time for those “O”riginal “B”elief “A”gainst “M”ajor “A’”mericans’ followers to scrutinize their “idol” in depth, and they will consciously realize that he is definitely NOT THE ONE, whom they have been blindly adoring to it’s delusive image during past mouths…..
Wake up, all Obana’s followers, don’t let this guy creates a political Pandora’s box to this greatest country on earth!

I agree with Obama with regard to the economic issue. I also understand that each party must put its best dancing monkeys on display for their conventions.

As a fiscal conservative I am extremely interested to see if anyone of presidential nominees are going to bring up how we are going to pay our way out of the debt the current president has gotten us into.

As long as our greatest interest is a pregnant kid, we will not get many answers for the difficult questions.

The economy will be just fine. But not if Obama is elected, and everyone’s taxes go up. I don’t know about others, but I can’t afford any more taxes.

Sarah Palin will be a breath of fresh air to the Republican party. John McCain definitely made the right choice. Together, they will fight corruption in Washington.

AMEN!

Same old comments from the Obama campaign, I am so sick and tired of the phrase, McCain represents a third Bush term. They always refer to the war in Iraqi as the Bush war but I believe that tonight the dems will hear in their own words that is was just as much their war, why didn’t the dems do their jobs in the Senate? I am sick of hearing that McCain voted 90%of the time with Bush, well what about Obama, he voted 97% of the time with the Dems and their rating is worse than Bush’s rating. There was a lot of videos last night and I am betting there will be a lot more tonight and they will all be Dems in their own words.

Concerning the economy…Fred Thompson said it well. Obama is going to make it worse. He is going to tax all businesses more so that the products and services we all use will cost us more money. What a plan!!! I want to pay $5.00 for a gallon of milk. He wants to create jobs. Well taxing businesses more will urge them to move across the boarder. This will eliminate more jobs. Obama is a Socialist!!

Obama is scared and using anything to attack the republicans, last night was about service , tonight and tomorrow night will get more in depth to other issues like the economy.

Sounds like the Obama camp is talking out of both sides of their mouth. If they were so concerned about poverty and helping out the poor, maybe they should have cut back on their extravagance as shown on the last night of their convention. How much did they spend on that night, when they could have continued the convention at the hall instead of renting the stadium and building that big set. Must have cost hundreds of thousands at least. Maybe he should have given some of that to his half-brother.

Your coverage is outstanding and the only coverage that seems to tell both sides of issues. Fair and balanced has made you a target for the other networks as well as the Democratic “press” who feed the public a spin. Sad when our citizens blindly follow a spin and believe the sales job that only leads to the slaughter. I am reminded of the Twilight Zone wherein aliens landed and everyone wanted to get on board their ship after decoding the title of their “bible”…”To Serve Man”. They were being sold that these aliens were the “good guys” until a few decoded the rest of the book and realized it was a cook book… Obama is full of pretty words and he has an incredible gift for public speaking. He is like a great Rock Star that can work up a crowd, however, it is only entertainment and they become “Fans” that won’t listen to reason about their idol and where he will lead them.
Like English, politics should be a mandatory course in high School.
