After Promising A Day Without Politics, Biden Gets Political
SCRANTON, PA — With Hurrican Gustav bearing down on Louisiana, Joe Biden canceled a Labor Day parade in Pittsburgh and told supporters gathered in his boyhood backyard for an economic roundtable that today wasn’t a day for national politics. But that didn’t stop him from ripping John McCain on everything from energy to foreign policy.
After some waxing poetic about his childhood in Scranton, Biden said he and his running mate had decided to curtail the more blatantly political events of the day to focus on the storm buffeting the Gulf Coast. “I decided it just wasn’t right for me, on a national campaign, to be marching down the street with people carrying Biden for Vice President signs and Obama signs,” he said. “I didn’t think it was appropriate for us to do the political things we normally do.”
Biden promised that his praise of Barack Obama would be the only political speech of the day. “I promise you, my word as a Biden. If Barack grew up in our neighborhood like he did in Kansas being raised by his grandparents, if he grew up here being raised by his grandparents, he’d have been our friend. He’d cover your back,” Biden said. Obama was actually raised in Hawaii, but his mother was born in Kansas.
“If I come back up here after this election and find you didn’t vote for him, you’re gonna have me to answer to on Demick Avenue, OK?” Biden joked.
But after issuing his mock threats of attacks on political dissenters, Biden’s actual political attacks on the GOP began.
On Iraq: “This administration, the Iraqis, NATO, the Europeans, our friends around the world, the vast majority of the American people, the Democratic-controlled Congress, Republicans in Congress - they all agree. Barack Obama was right, and John McCain was wrong.”
On Health Care Taxes: “What’s the answer the other team’s talking about? Making sure the employees who get health care are going to be taxed.”
On the oil companies: “They made $600 billion in profits since 2000. $600 billion! And John wants to give them another $5 billion because they don’t have the money to explore? C’Mon, give me a break!”
The McCain campaign contrasted Biden’s remarks with the GOP candidate’s behavior today — asking whether Obama’s able to keep his VP candidate in check. “While John McCain has called upon Americans to serve and assist our fellow citizens in the gulf states, Barack Obama’s own running mate, Joe Biden, clearly has no limits when it comes to political attacks,” said spokesman Ben Porritt. “Either Barack Obama’s claims of bipartisanship are empty or he is unable to control his running mate.”

nobama could’nt have picked a worse veep–he really shot himself in the foot this time—what with his preacher, his crooked freinds, this is the best for our country.
Shameful! Can’t believe that Obama and Biden said they would be respectful today, and neither one could help themselves.
Here is another example of how the Dems, say one thing and do something else. I want to know if they will ever follow through with what they say?
The “change” ticket huh? Biden is as old time washington as it gets….He chose to be petty and predictable today…seeing how the two parties have handled this day… is enough said….I’ll give you something that is new and exciting… its the introduction of some amazing, real women, with real families and who are determined and stubborn enough to fight for and get what they believe in….Men all over the world should be shaking in their boots…Laura Bush, Cindy McCain, and Sarah Palin are intelligent, compassionate, classy women…we should vote them all in office and really shake things up….
Perhaps Bidens wife should gently remind him that manners are called for on certain occasions…today was one of them! Classless choice…but definately NOT SHOCKING!
I used to like Biden, what a disappointment. No class, this man is only a heartbeat away from President and he doesn’t know when to shut his mouth. This was a day for the unfortunate people in the Gulf. He just has no compassion, which is very surprising considering what has happened to him in his life. What a sad and unfortunate choice for a Vice Presidential candidate.
Biden was right on
1) Obama not being ready to be president
Now lets see, Biden was wrong on
1)Iraq. He wanted tp partition the country
2) on the surge
3) plagarism, or would that be considered right?
Is that all you can come up with? Where’s the story?
I think you are all just trying real hard to cover up the story about Palin’s daughter being several months pregnant! Oops, did she forget to tell them about that?
The Obama campaign asked all of us contributers to go out and contribute to the Red Cross.
“”o’bIDEN” their word means NOTHING !”"
Shamefull Mr Biden …too bad you cant take the hint from the Republicans and leave politics out of today…when the country is waiting …. can we say Jesse James sorta like a shot in the back unarmed…

McCain selected so unqulified Palin as VP. Shame on you, McCain. McCain/Palin are just words not actions. I am not going to vote for them.
Obama is far more better choice for our presidency as he has clear plan and vision to lead this great country in terms of tax, foreign policy, healthcare, energy, education etc etc.
John McCain has no plans whatsoever. He has no vision.
Obama Republican
The McCain camp and you folks on this website are A JOKE. Please, what Biden said was campaigning? Have you watched TV today and seen all the RNC folks milking the tragedy in the Gulf for their own political gains. Why is Senator McCain leading the so called ‘relief efforts’ in the Gulf? Is he the FEMA leader? Or is he leading a senate panel? He has the right to be there but please let everyone explain to me why the extended coverage of everything Senator McCain does or does not do for the Gulf coast in his capacity as a private citizen.
Instead of focusing on moving the country forward, you have the RNC that has its head up its you know what and a whimpering DNC that is so scared to call them out.
We are all saddened by the tragedy in the Gulf and doing all we can to help- please hold your convention or cancel it. The RNC is not FEMA, they need to stop acting as if they are.
Bob Barr 08
Where’s the story? They promised one thing and did another! Get used to it, it’s what Dems do.
These are weak comments. Wow Biden opened his mouth… big deal…
How about Palin and her abstinance education over sex education, .. hows that one working out for you Mrs. Palin?
Now your daughter is getting married at 17? But let me guess it shows shes a normal family. Ok well I have 2 daughters they both made it through college without getting pregnant… I must be abnormal.
She has bad ideas and poor judgement just like McCain. Not afraid to cover things up either, she pulled her daughter out of school for ‘Mono’ when really she was knocked up. Just what we need a person who covers things up instead of the truth.. same with her trying to get the ex brother in-law fire.
The R. ticket is a joke.
That’s Biden’s perogative. Obama and Biden are the best pick for America. McCain did not vet Palin and her secrets are coming out of the closet. I am embarassed for the Republicans.
Obama/Biden - Yes We Can
Yeah - you guys might want to look at your VP. She was a member of a fringe party that wanted Alaska to leave the union. Their motto was “Alaska First”.
Kinda puts McCain’s “Country First” motto at risk, don’t it?
You people at fox are getting very desperate. I suggest you ask your boy Karl Rove about political statements made today. While you’re at it, ask McCain about why he and his were jumping over themselves for photo-ops from the hurricane zone.
Laughable. It’s time you people step aside and let adults run this country for a while. I, for one, have had enough of the GOP and its minions using spin and contorting facts all day to win elections, then doing an utterly miserable job of actually running the country.
This isn’t about liberals or conservatives, it IS about the issues. I know the hurricane is going on, but there is also an election for POTUS going on. So I think it’s perfectly OK for a politician to talk policy, what else is he going to do, sit around and feign concern like McCain (even my 5 year old son thought he was transparent as hell)?
Btw, turn on ABC, they are running a story about all the partying going on at the supposedly “somber” RNC convention.
Hypocrisy, you are spelled G-O-P.
Donna Hughes: There are two things you can count on with Democrats, one do not bring up their families even when one makes public statements that are an insult to Americans, and two bring up anything on the republicans families and children that you can. First of all teen pregnancy is no big shock, it happens all the time, then next, SO WHAT? Are you just ignorant or have you no mercy for children? Is it just too much for you to understand that hundreds of families are going threw the same thing and you can’t be with your children 7/24. Are you perfect and never made a mistake in your life? Children make bad choices everyday and then have to deal with the results of their choice. So now you want to hurt that child? Why? Did she try to harm you? Did she do something to make you act so poorly? Shame on you.
Why are we even still bothering to have an election, when McCain & Palin are so obviously unqualified to even run. FundaMENTAList right-wingers are willing to take the country down to keep gays and abortion in control, they would rather continue with deficit spending and war-mongering with no basis in reality or fact all in the name of morals. Remember, the moral majority is neither.
Oh by the way, the red cross does not take the money donated to them and use it just for what you may want them to. It may not even reach the hurrican victims. The Red Cross is a great Org. but they use their donations for as many projects as they can. If you really want to help give to a fund that goes dirrectly there, donate time to help clean up, donate supplies or go help rebuild. If you want to give to the Red Cross do so but not thinking it will go to just the hurrican victims.
The GOP response to Biden is itself a political comment. Thus, both parties are guilty. Of course, FOX news, always pandering blindly to conservatives, fails to mention this contradiction.
So disagreeing with an opposing candidate at an economic roundtable is “ripping John McCain on everything from energy to foreign policy”. What else would be discussed here? The point was not to blatantly campaign in a Labor Day Parade. Perhaps they should have held hands and prayed that another Katrina tradegy wouldn’t happen in New Orleans — something even Mr. Bush didn’t successfully do last time.
Please, if you’re going to rag on Bidon, get something real to complain about.
Is John McCain already President? His usurpation of our current President George Bush is shameless!
Funny, the Republicans had no problem politicizing Gustav:
Texas Governor Rick Perry: “You’re seeing Republican governors and… uh… I think in Republican states, taking care of the citizens. That’s what… That’s what we do.”
Alabama Governor Bob Riley: “I want to personally thank President Bush for his leadership.”
It’s funny that the McCain campaign is so comfortable playing the victim role. Reminds me of Hillary’s campaign.
Another politician who can’t shut up even for one day. This is another reason why I am not voting in November. Whoever wins will not be my president.
John McCain has not been campaigning? Come on!! Every time you turn around there he is. Where was he three years ago?
The sanctimonious behavior of McCain et al re: Gustav is tiresome. Are we seriously to believe that politicis has been suspended by the Republicans because of the possible disaster Gustav presents? This GOP behavior IS political and allows them to pretend to be the saviors of the southern portion of the country. This is not 9/11 for heaven’s sake. It also permitted them to keep Bush and Cheney away from the convention, a plus for them and a double plus for the rest of us.
McCain knows he’s going to lose and just wants to spend the next few months with a cute running mate. He has ZERO thought about what’s good for the country, at 72 he is still thinking with his crotch.
Give me a break, Biden has no class????? Yes this was a terrible day for the unfortunate people of the Gulf but so was 3 years ago when our President who promised when we voted him in office TWICE to protect the people of the USA. Did anyone see that happen when Katrina hit New Orleans?? Did those poor people feel protected. My goodness, 3 years later and thousands are still misplaced with no homes. Dems say one thing and do something else, excuse me, the President of this great country said one thing (a few times) and did nothing else.
????
I heard several Republican comemtators bashing Obama today on TV. It didn’t bother me and I’m sure the people evacuating NO didn’t care either. Lets get outraged over more important things.
This is absurd. Your reporters followed him to a picnic, this was not a political event. If he discusses politics at his home, with his family, the Fox propaganda machine would be spinning it. Why do you guy’s call yourselves a news station anymore?
This article makes complete sense. Biden is correct that oil companies don’t need tax cuts and McSame is wrong on Iraq.
wow you guys are morons
Yes, the Repugnuticans would love to have a day without political comments about their insane beliefs.
We wouldn’t want to stir up anything that might bring attention to the fact that an ailing presidential candidate has picked a soccer mom with strong PTA experience behind her to lead our troops in times like these when McCane keels over from a heart attack caused by the stress he would surely encounter if America is stupid enough to vote for him into office.
Pathetic. Biden is speaking the truth. The republicans have an empty cupboard. What did Mccain do during Katrina? Nothing. He is trying to fix the biggest GOP mistake of 2005. It won’t sell. The republicans left Louisiana to rot after katrina. They are desperately now trying to make us forget that they blew it 3 years ago.
Palin is the story that keeps on giving. The governor of Alaska can’t even run her own family. Lets see what else comes up in the days. She is an insult to women who are really qualified to be President or VP of our country. Surely there are women in the GOP that exceed her record and qualifications. Why would you pick a unknown, when you are trying to prove your judgement in managing the USA?
Biden voted against the alaskan oil pipeline years ago. Since its completion in 1977, the pipeline has transported over 15 billion barrels (2.4 Tl) of oil. Now thats change and experience we need.
What a bonehead.
Nice to see some unbiased reporting. Thank you Fox News!
I guess you can’t even talk politics in your own (boyhood) backyard? Nothing about Obama and the RNC asking supporters to support the ARC today in THIS story.
Proving once again that Fox News is capable of pandering to the lowest denominator they can, and stirring these poorly educated malcontents into a frothing fury. I wonder when their “ardent fans” will realize Fox is just manipulating them like they claim the horrible liberal media does to everyone else?
It was McCain’s decision to not campaign today, get real with your drivel! This aint news..
Oh, for heaven’s sake - EVERYTHING the GOP does, says, thinks or prints is political, whenever, wherever, and it’s all manipulation and meanness. Truth is not in their vocabulary. They distort and demean and fool all their people all the time.
They’ve stooped really low with this v.p. deal, insulting women with this really frightening choice of Palin. And by accepting the nomination, Palin has turned away from her own family’s needs and jeopardized their right to privacy, all in the name of promoting her own ambitions. This is not exactly “mother of the year” behavior. Who could trust this woman to make really, really good judgments in our country’s interests - Sarah should be reminded that this is the BIG-TIME and she hasn’t done very well at the small-time stuff.
Just being shorter than McCain is not a qualification to be v.p.
Joe Biden was speaking the truth but Republican surrogate Karl Rove called Biden “big blowhard doofus” today. So I guess we’re even.
“On hearing the news, Biden grinned and said “he’s a great American.”
See Biden reacts to Rove insult on CNN Political Ticker.
It’s a campaign. You whine and argue for bi-partisanship in a campaign from the Democrats? Talk about myopia. Have the Republicans acted bi-partisan when running their “Obama, be scared” ads? I realize your article was cut short, and you could have ranted on for pages. But choose a little more bi-partisanship in your own headline if you think it’s that important.
You Republican fools amuse me with your hateful and ill-informed rhetoric. Perhaps you should consider trying to get your news from a more unbiased site, amd try to think for yourselves for a change. Just a thought, although I am sure it is wasted on the likes of you…
The more the democratic crazies sense their impending doom, the more vicious and mean-spirited they become.
Gotta love their frenzied, rabid foam-at-the-mouth behavior. Next thing we’ll be hearing about them after ‘the one’ has lost will be reports of a whole lot of televisions and other electronic gadgets which will have “left the shelves” along with lot of broken glass in places like LA & Chicago.
Two words…..Hillary Clinton! Hillary should have been on the ticket!!! I guess we’ll lose yet another chance at the White House.
I forget, do you have to fail a blood test, an IQ test, a polygraph — or all 3 — to join the GOP in subverting the US Constitution?
Joe Biden needs to make a lot of comments on why he gave the U.S. The Violence Against Women Act. This law provides no support for abused men and fathers. Perhpas this is why Obama believes fathers do not rise to the occasion when it is the gov that destroys fathers.
(Michael) Palin for President!!!
Now THAT is change I can believe in.
I come from a long line of dems. but what has happened these last 8yrs is unbelievale. I never thought that the party of john kennedy would try to put this country down every chance they could, just because they could is shocking . What has happened to politics stops at the watersedge.I can’t believe these people cant see though that women in congress as a fony all this party cares about is for them to get back the power they lose maybe the people who voted them out saw what we cant or dont want to!
No way, NO How, NO MCCAIN!! It’s about time the DEMS point the rifle, hoorah I want more, more fire. No lip biting, just trash talk and party platforms. More about Sarah Palins pregnant 17 yr old daughter, for good old times.
Typical Obama - Biden actions. Say what sounds right and go ahead and do the wrong thing. Empty promises are all Obama has and as vice president Biden will not do any better than he or the majority of Democrats in congress, wether in majority or not.
Oh leave it alone. I bet there is at least one unmarried young girl in everyone’s family or
extended family. By the way getting a DUI when you are 22 does not make you a drunk.
You libs make me sick
Apparently, Fox news missed the GOP governors get political on Hurrican Gustov.
