Obama Gives McCain a Pass on Gustav Trip

Yesterday Barack Obama told reporters that he would not go to the hurricane zone to avoid taking away resources needed to evacuate the region facing Gustav’s threat. “I think you all are aware of now that we have a very big, uh, tail,” Obama said, referring to the large entourage of press, staff, Secret Service, and local law enforcement that creates the “Obama bubble.” He continued, “Sometimes we can be a distraction in these kinds of situations…I will do whatever is required that is useful, but right now the main thing that’s useful us letting everyone evacuate out there now.”

This morning John McCain traveled to Mississippi - with his own “tail,” while Obama campaigned in Ohio - far from Gustav’s destination.

When asked if he thought the trip was appropriate, Obama gave him the benefit of the doubt. “A big storm like this raises bipartisan concerns and I think for John to want to find out what is going on is fine. The thing that I always is concerned about in the middle of the storm is whether we are drawing resources away from folks on the ground, because the Secret Service and various security requirements sometimes it pulls police and fire and other departments away from concentrating on the job. I am assuming that where he went that wasn’t an issue and we are going to try to stay clear of the area until things have settled down and then we will probably try to figure out how we can be as helpful as possible,” Obama told reporters in Lima.

Guess, the 2 Democrats are afraid of the storm !

McCain traveled to a partisan photo op with Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, the former Republican National Convention chair and a longtime Bush-Cheney lap-dog.

That Obama wasn’t invited to the GOP-lovefest in Mississippi does not mean Obama does not care about the Gustav situation. McCain and Barbour simply choose to exploit the situation by having a photo-op and making some news.

Oh, and Barbour’s race relations show he’s a great guy personally, too.

Finally, a fair and balanced article about both sides!

McCain simply sucks for trying to score political points on this tragedy.

Who in God’s great country of the USA wants to hear what Obama thinks of McCain traveling to Mississippi. Obama is not The Chosen One; he is just the One We Do Not Know. Let him keep campaigning for votes while the Gulf Coast area, which is basically McCain territory, suffers great lose of property and lives.

Comment by ICEMAN25

Obama is such a wind bag its pathetic.

Comment by KC

Obama continues to show good judgement time and time again, and he’s a class act! He could have gone out there to draw attention to his campaign but he chooses not to out of concerns for the people who may potentially get affected by the storm. Does anyone not see why McCain went to Mississippi in the middle of an impending storm? Votes! Yes, anything to get votes! McCain is a classless, selfish and reckless politician, and that’s why he should not be our next president.

Comment by Jerry

Obama is such a clear thinker. McCain almost HAS to show up down there, because if he didn’t he’d be leaving himself open to Bush comparisons. McCain’s entourage will obviously be in the way, but oh well, he won’t stay long. I’m beginning to wonder if Gustav is a bit of divine payback for all those conservanuts who prayed for the Democratic Convention to be rained out?

Comment by Bill

Who cares what Obama thinks about McCain going to Mississippi?? He has no say in the matter and
the headline shows what the liberal media is thinking. Obama gives him a pass! Really?

And the “tail” that Obama brags about is getting shorter as we speak.

Funny that McCain is leading Obama by 7 points in today’s polls.

Comment by Russell

The RNC gets Hurricane Gustav just as the DNC gets Hurricane Palin. I wonder which one will do more damage? Hopefully Palin.

Comment by Mary Lou Luther

First reaction is: why is Obama being asked his opinion on whether or not it’s ok for McCain to go to the gulf? Why is there not an opinion piece from McCains point of view on whether or not it is ok for a potential president not to be in the center of what concerns America?

Second reaction: Of course Obama is being asked. Because he is all talk and no action. McCain acts. After all the security tail follows him around wherever he goes, so local security detail is not the real issue. It appears that the potential storm devastation just doesn’t fit into his plans right now. I wonder what other devastating things that will happen in the future just will not fit into his agenda to deal with?

I wonder if America really wants a president that can’t be bothered with its problems?

Comment by Lambanlaa

Sounds like an executive decision to me…

Comment by Brady Vitrano

This is Obama’s true colors. He is only interested in his campaign. McCain is a true leader. He has the RNC coming up plus he has to campaign more than Obama. McCain is the underdog yet he is going to Mississippi because he really cares about the people of the United States. I am disappointed in Obama for using such a lame excuse for not going see what the situation is on the coast line. If he believes our current government lacks good judgement, he would be actively involved/ overseeing the planning and steps our government is taking to manage another natural disaster. In my point of view, McCain is right. Obama is a celebrity and not fit to run our country.

Comment by keith

Obama will show up on his white carpet and promise the world. Gee can’t he wave his magic wond and part Gustav. I leave in south florida and we deal with this all the time.
It’s easy don’t build homes that are not made to with stand most storms like we do in florida and put familys in danager. If you live below sea level build them high off the ground like they do in the keys. I am so tierd of of Obama telling us of all these great things he’s going to do for us. Americans need to grow up and start taking care of there famialy. The past has shown the the bigger the goverment get’s the less they get done. Promise less and do more…….kc

Bull, why was he so eager to help out with the floods for publicity? Oh thats right it was before he was the nominee.

Comment by Francis

I’m not and Obama supporter but have to hand it to him; he seems to have pretty good, if not great judgement.

May the best win.

Comment by NoObama08

how big of our democratic “nominee” to give a Pass, as if he is already President. and of course the press, or MSM, feel he already is, so thumbs down to them for elevating him to this very Presidential level and making America feel as if McCain needs his approval. How “bipartisan” of all of you.

I am ashamed to be a Democrat, and will no longer support its partisan efforts to elect someone not qualified to run this country in any way, fashion, or form. Doesnt mean I will vote McCain, but Palin sure is looking alot better to me than Obama. She has done more for her country, and state, in less than 2 years than he is done in his entire life. And its actions, not words, that decide my vote.

Obama is such a self made celebrity, at least he think he is.

I just heard John McCain speak on the news about the RNC plans, and how things will be curtailed
in light of Gustav bearing down on the Gulf Coast. His remarks were straightforward and genuine, and if you can believe a guy like Obama, who thus far has done nothing to speak of in his
political career save for appropriating gobs of money for his former church, and funnelling money
to the folks in Chicago who don’t work, why can’t you believe a man like McCain, who has
served his country in both the military and the government, is sincere in his concern for the
citizens of America? If you think for one minute you will benefit from Obams’s tax cuts to “95%’
of the working americans, guess again. When he slams big business with higher taxes, guess
who will be punished for it…yes, that’s right, the american worker. Job cuts, lower pay, lower
standard of living. Good luck to all the lambs being led to the slaughter…at least when the
Republicans are in office, I can pay my bills and take a vacation. God Bless John McCain and
Sarah Palin. And to Michael Moore…why don’t you go live in Russia, and see if Putin and his
puppet president put up with your big mouth…like we have to here.

Comment by Ira

What a non-story this is! One candidate goes, one stays away, and each has an acceptable reason. Neither candidate criticizes the other, and no one makes a big deal of it EXCEPT for all of US.

Does this story have anything to do with the election? NO. Does it reflect well or poorly on either candidate? NO.

We should be concerned with the people of the Gulf Coast today, not who is going for a look-see and who is staying out of the way.

This is not a campaign issue.

Comment by JOYCE

I JUST SAW JOHN MCCAIN SPEAK ON THE NEWS, AND HE OUTLINED THE RNC PLANS AND HOW
THEY WERE BEING CURTAILED IN LIGHT OF GUSTAV BEARING DOWN ON THE GULF COAST. HIS COMMENTS WERE MOVING AND HE GAVE A CALL TO ACTION ON THE PART OF ALL AMERICANS,
NOT JUST REPUBLICANS, TO HELP THOSE MOST AFFECTED BY THIS IMPENDING DISASTER. IF ONE CAN BELIEVE SOMEONE LIKE OBAMA, WHO HAS DONE NOTHING IN HIS CAREER SAVE FOR
GETTING GOBS OF MONEY FOR HIS FORMER CHURCH, AND LOADS OF PORK FOR PEOPLE IN
HIS END OF CHICAGO WHO DON’T WANT TO WORK, THEN WHY CAN’T ONE BELIEVE THAT A MAN
LIKE MCCAIN, WHO SERVED HIS COUNTRY IN THE MILITARY AND THE GOVERNMENT, IS A
SINCERE INDIVIDUAL WHO CARES ABOUT THE AMERICAN PEOPLE? IF YOU THINK THAT YOU WILL BENEFIT FROM OBAMA’S “TAX CUT FOR 95%” OF WORKING AMERICANS, GUESS AGAIN…
WHEN HE TAXES BIG BUSINESS, WHO DO YOU THINK WILL SUFFER???..THAT’S RIGHT, THE
AMERICAN WORKER, IN THE FORM OF JUB CUTS, LOWER PAY, AND LOWER STANDARD OF LIVING. AT LEAST WHEN THE REPUBLICANS ARE IN OFFICE, I CAN PAY BILLS AND GO ON VACATION, AND SAVE FOR RETIREMENT.

Comment by AJ

What exactly is McCain hoping to accomplish by going to Mississippi when there’s an impending tragedy? Perhaps to deliver food, water, medicine, or supply relief? Or is he pandering to the voters? If he had a slight good judgement in him, he would have thought of the fact that by him going there at this moment will produce no benefit but instead become an impediment to the evacuation effort. This man has crude judgement and not fit to our country. Can’t everyone see that McCain’s presidency will be another disaster in itself. Has America not had enough of these clueless pepple we elect to the presidency.

Comment by John from Texas

Obama isn’t giving Mccain “permission” to go to Mississippi, he’s giving him a pass by not taking the media bait to criticize him for making the trip. For your information, many times politicians are asked by the local authorities to not go into these areas because it pulls enormous resources away from the serious work that needs to be done. Politicians usually ignore these requests if they need the exposure. Obama was just giving Mccain the benefit of the doubt that where he was going wouldn’t interfere with their efforts.

Comment by Former Democrat

I am completely insulted and disgusted that Obama isn’t going to the area to assess what could be one of the biggest disasters in a long time. He may run this country, and he should be where he is needed the most. Instead, he makes a self-serving move- staying out of harm’s way and campaigning for President, all the while neglecting his responsibilities, just like he did in the Senate.

I don’t buy his excuse about being a distraction for one second. Why? Because if the thought he was such a distraction, then why did he go visit Iraq? I suspect that he isn’t going because he didn’t come up with the idea first. McCain shows brave judgement, and he now has my vote.

Comment by Cheryll

Oh, wasn’t that sweet of Messiah Obama to say it’s OK for McCain to go. Hey Obama why don’t you show us your real powers and go negotiate with Gustav to spare the people of New Orleans? PUTZ!!

Comment by Ricky from Carolina

Well, if you don’t like hearing about Obama, I suggest you start getting used to it because he’s going to be our next president…

I’m continually amazed at how unflappable, thoughtful, and humane Obama always seems–especially in light of McCain’s well established anger management issues and the vitriol of much that is written about him on the web.

Comment by acarponzo

Well he has decided to ask all “HIS” on-line supporters through “HIS” email list to donate. Maybe this is how he could run his tax increases? Of course, he could have sent Joe like he did with Georgia. Palin is going to clean Joe’s clock in the debates. Have you heard her talk energy? No pie in the sky “NEW” tech talk there. Drill…Drill…Drill.

Comment by jimmy

John McCain, why ad to the confusion. Your trip down there will not make up for your non-support previously shown when Katrina came through. Good political stunt. Now take off your jacket and do so real work and help the victims rebuild after the storm is over.

Comment by steve

I can just imagine how the Obama socialists, followed by the sheep of the media would have reacted if McCain didn’t go to check out the south. They would have hollered long and lasting, accusing the Republicans that they were responsible for the hurricane even to occur! I can still hear how the media and socialist went wild over Bush when Katrina went through Mississippi/Louisiana….by-the-way, why didn’t the people of Mississippi get the attention of Louisiana and they got the brunt of the storm! Remember, the local govt should have more responsibility for their area than the feds. Go ahead McCain, play it safe and put on your show! Maybe the media will have less to cry about!

Comment by quintin

HATERS!!!!! OBAMA HATERS!!!!! McNOT is going to do what to help out with the storm? Nothing but canpaign for votes. Just like the Russian situation, Palin and now this. He uses everything. Way to go. Country First!!!!! What a joke.

Comment by Nick

Hey Bill,

What polls are you imagining that have McCain up by seven points? Todays daily Gallup and Rasmussen poll have Obama up by a statistically significant margin. I think it was very gracious of Obama to give McCain the nod to go ahead and visit the gulf. It is a good example of Barack’s ability to reach across the isle to delegate responsibility on the other side.

Comment by Fenton Hardy

Isn’t this exactly why Bush didn’t land to inspect the damage from Katrina? Is Obama channeling GW?

Comment by Cindy

This is just one more example of McCain’s desperation and poor judgement.

Comment by ohiogal

Come on - Obama, you are so full of yourself and with thugs like Michael Moore claiming “there must be a God” (at the expense of our Gulf friends) makes me know for sure that a “a thug begots a thug afterall.” We need to be focused on our fellow Americans. I know most Democrats are putting tongue in cheek right now with the cancellation or delay of the GOP National Convention. Be careful though, you may swallow the tongue after choking on pride and plain evilness. Thank you very much and Have a nice Labor Day. Pray for our troops and those in need. Politics has no place for pride right now.

Hey Bill–
get your facts straight–it’s OBAMA leading McCain by 7 points

Comment by Jingo

If Obama cared about New Orleans, he would stage a coup, take over the government now and oversee the entire response to the hurricane. But noooo. He just keeps campaigning and monitoring the storm from afar. Now John McCain… he immediately went straight to New Or…uhhh Jackson Mississippi, which I guess is kinda near New Orleans but far enough inland that it’s probably safe. Anyway… just look at the storm’s path. It’s moving further and further away from Mississippi, OBVIOUSLY because it fears John McCain…. as do foreign people and small children.

Comment by JereBear

It’s okay for Obama to not go to the potential storm area out of concern for the area and the “citizens of the United States” because he thinks his entourage “of the liberal media” might get in the way, and draw resources away from their task. Why was it not okay that Bush was not there? Would he not have had a larger entourage of Secret Service and such since he is the “Our President”?
Obama is an overrated P$&$*&^*k, if his head swells any more it won’t fit on my bit screen TV

Comment by ksalahbin@gmail.com

Whoever said McCain was leading by Seven points is the most ignorant comment I’ve ever heard. If you look at all the POLL’s which are all BS anyway, they all show Obama leading. Not everyone votes on polls plus people always like to trick the media. You have any idea how many times i’ve voted for McCain on these stupid polls to trick the numbers, Hahaha. In the end, Obama has my vote because this guy McCain is so old and the older you get the smaller you brain gets “FACT”. Older people god bless them have much smaller brains and are not sharp at all.

Obama has been right about everything and opposed more negativity from our government which gives him more credibility then McCain, Bush, and Cheney, 3 of the most corrupt people in congress. I wonder how much money those guys have pocketed from this war and Cheney’s backend KBR and Haliburton deals.

Comment by ksalahbin@gmail.com

I bet you wouldn’t think that if you weren’t so brain washed by all those add’s. Be a little bit more original, we know you don’t like him cause he’s black. Better yet, why don’t you go to Iraq since you’re so pro McCain. Lets see how tough you are if you’re pro McCain.

That’s what I thought.

:)

Comment by JonesH

So let me get this straight. Most people on this board feel that if a deadly national disaster is coming, our president should be at ground zero. As in, “It’s prudent for the president to put himself in deadly situations.” I don’t follow the logic. Simple question to all you nuts out there: should our next potential president be heading straight towards what will quite possibly be the most devastating natural disaster in our country’s history? I think Obama made the more “presidential” decision.

Comment by Kristy

All we’ve been hearing from the democrats is how this storm is a blessing from God to help their cause from being overshadowed by the RNC. I am an independent voter and frankly am very disgusted by anyone who makes light of families lives and homes being destroyed. We are Americans first and foremost. Shame on anyone who says this storm is a blessing. I personally think McCain traveling to the Gulf shows that he actually cares about people. How is one pitching in to help those in need ever a bad idea? It’s only a bad idea to those who are not part of the solution. To everyone who said Obama showed more leadership by avoiding the area let me ask you something… Who would you rather be in charge during a crisis, a man who runs towards the trouble to give a helping hand or someone who stands back as a spectator and signs autographs? I don’t need or ever want to follow a celebrity. I want someone who is willing to give up the spot light, sacrifice themselves and their own agenda to do what’s best for his neighbor. I don’t want a politician. I want more than words. I want results. I want action. I want a real role model.

Words are meaningless without the follow through. I don’t want pretty speeches. I want a change I can believe in now. I want progress.

I agree with Obama. Why create distraction from the needs of the people by going there now. I thought evacuation meant evacuation. Not “come on in”. If John goes I hope he takes Palin with him.

I got news for you, the average of all the polls showed McCain leading by seven points day before yesterday. I do not post false info like most libs. Before you call anyone ignorant, you had better re-read your own posts.

BTW, I remember the photo of President Harry Truman holding the newspaper with the giant headline “Dewey Wins”. So don’t count on anything.

Quote: “most devastating natural disaster in our country’s history? I think Obama made the more “presidential” decision.”

What a joke, you believe everything that you hear, like all libs. I’m right in the path of the “storm” as we speak, and we have had no wind, and one brief shower. We were forecast to get inches of rain and high wind.
The evacuees in my town, are wondering why they took buses out of New Orleans. BTW at tax payer expense.
