McCain considers convention changes as Gustav approaches
PITTSBURGH, PA - As Hurricane Gustav barrels in on New Orleans, Sen. McCain and the RNC said today that they are closely monitoring the storm and open to suspending or canceling portions of the upcoming convention.
McCain told Fox News Sunday’s Chris Wallace in an interview set to air tomorrow that he is concerned about the storm, which is on a path to hit New Orleans late Monday or early Tuesday–one day into the convention.
“I’m afraid Chris that we may have to look at that situation and we’ll try to monitor it. I’ve been talking to governors Jindal, Barbour, Reilly, Crist, I’ve been talking to all of them, but you know it just wouldn’t be appropriate to have a festive occasion while a near tragedy or a terrible challenge is presented in the form of a natural disaster. So we’re monitoring it from day to day and I’m saying a few prayers too,” McCain said during a pretaped interview in Pittsburgh today.
The presumptive GOP nominee has sought to distinguish himself from President Bush on the campaign trail and has been extremely critical of the government’s response to Hurricane Katrina, which hit three years ago this week.
During a conference call with reporters today RNC Deputy Chairman Frank Donatelli said the GOP is “very, very aware of the situation” and will take “appropriate programmatic action to recognize that potential situation.”
Though Donatelli said postponing the RNC is not in the cards.
“I don’t think that is a possibility. To postpone a convention is much more difficult than you might think,” he said. “I am not sure that would be the preferred method. I do believe there are other methods to deal with that potential situation so that we recognize and show the gravity of the situation and still do our business.”

I want to post a couple of things because there needs to be some balance and “reality” involved in a conversation like this. I am not an Obama supporter, but facts are facts and we can’t keep ignoring the facts and make-up things as we go to try to make something look better or worse than what it is.
The fact is, Obama had 8 years at state level government service and now 3 years in the Senate. This brings it to a total of 11 years. As you can see “below” he has been involved for years writing, sponsoring and getting bills past at a state and federal level.
Palis, was on the PTA, than to city counsel, than to Mayor of a very small town, than to elected Governor of Alaska for 2 years. She has passed 1 bill to stop a major mistake in the “bridge to no-where”, which was already in progress when she took office and she has co-sponsored a few other bills that have passed. It is insane to compare the Leadership abilities and experience of her and Obama. I give her credit for what she has done in her small town as Mayor of 250 people and her 2 years as Governor of Alaska which is the size ”population” of Louisville, KY and her 85% approval rating taken in a poll of 3000 people but now we are talking about leading the United States of America. Just because a great High School coach goes 10-0 and has a perfect season, that does not mean he is ready to go coach the New York Yankees. In November I look for an absolute slaughter.
I actually believe, because the “Bush” 8 years has been so horrible, I think the Republican Party thought they didn’t have a chance. But I think they thought it would be Edwards and Clinton and Obama came from nowhere and was a total shock. McCain could have had a shot and knowing this now I would say the Republican party now wishes that they would have put their best out there instead of letting McCain go thru the motions so they could focus on 2012. I feel they went into this election with 2012 in their sites, and they probably still do.
Senator Obama has sponsored or co-sponsored 570 bills in the 109th and 110th Congress.
Senator Obama has sponsored or co-sponsored 15 bills that have become LAW since he joined the Senate in 2005.
Senator Obama has also introduced amendments to 50 bills, of which 16 were adopted by the Senate.
Most of his legislative effort has been in the areas of:
Energy Efficiency and Climate Change (25 bills)
Health care (21 bills) and public health (20 bills)
Consumer protection/labor (14 bills)
The needs of Veterans and the Armed Forces (13 bills)
Congressional Ethics and Accountability (12 bills)
Foreign Policy (10 bills)
Voting and Elections (9 bills)
Education (7 bills)
Hurricane Katrina Relief (6)
The Environment (5 bills)
Homeland Security (4 bills)
Discrimination (4 bills)

A republican service convention to aid storm victims would demonstrate stewardship and servant leadership with humility and heart.
Former democrat and Hillary supporter for McCain/Palin 08!
As always Mccain always concerned about the American people. Lets remember Obama did not even show to New Orleans and tried to send his wife Michelle since he was busy.
I just wanted to comment and ask about the fact that as I was surfing the channels during a football game this Pm I stopped at Fox as there were discussing the DNC and upcomiing RNC.. I am Not familiar with the reporters. But this occurred on Aug.30th between 5pm and 7pm. Anyway, the folks were dissatisfied with the media coverage at the DNC making comments like CNN got better seating, which may be but then I heard this gentleman say that a reporter from a different network was So worked up over Sen Obama’s speech and I quote “I think he wanted to have sex with him” something to that effect. Surely, you do Not want this type of language on your network during peak hrs. Thankyou for your time, Kathryn Wilson, Ohio
McCain will do the right thing. Not like the obama DNC gang - with their staged event - just like a movie set - all FAKE. How much did this cost the American tax payer??????
Obama has turned this election into a circus - or American Idol show - disgrace!
Did he “buy” - a big bump - or stay about 5 pts ahead?????? Was it worth it??
republicans just got pwnt by God.
Here’s something I thought would be HUGE for Mr. McCain!
IF he would stop the convention Monday as it is set to be and have all the speakers at some other safe location just to be on TV and give Louisiana and those states in harms way the money that would be spent on the convention…….it would make believers out of people wanting to see this maverick Senator making REAL change……therefore winner over more votes with the gesture. Of course there would be some cost related to all the vendors involved to not supply but it save money that could go to help. This jesture could not be topped by Obama!
It would be in the best interest of the country & RNC to postpone the convention in the wake of Hurricane Gustov. I’m a registered independant voter who will be very disappointed in the RNC to put the convention agenda ahead of a natural disaster. I along with others will have to re-evaluate my opinion of this decision by the RNC should they convene for this convention. “COUNTRY FIRST”
“What they never understood is that this election was never about me——-it’s about YOU!” Barack Obama
” my counterpart would rather lose a war than lose an election.” John McCain
So please expalin why Sarah Palin is the best choice for the GOP #2. If her selection means that she could court the embittered fraction on Clinton supporters; what does that say about McCain’s “lose an election statement? Does McCain care what he proposes to leave us with if he doesn’t live to become 76? No!
Palin ADMITTED that 2 weeks ago she didn’t know what the Vice-Presidents duties entailed. She may be a fast learner; but dizzamm….how much of a price would WE pay for her on the job training if the Senile Senator doesn’t live thru the first term? Harp on Obama’s experience if you will; but understand that he has read the decsription of the job he is running for.
I’m sure the GOP is full of people who share the views of Sarah Palin that KNOW what a Vice-President does. I’m not sure that they happen to be young females. This is PANDERING to the highest degree. Dan Quayle would have been a better choice. At least he knew what the job entailed.
You Go McCain. At least you seem genuinely concerned for the people in the path of Gustav. I hope we keep in mind all the people who are once again displaced due to this storm.
“I’ve been talking to governors Jindal, Barbour, Reilly, Crist, I’ve been talking to all of them,” is McCain stance while Obama had his “staff” informing him so now Obama had to make calls himself what a hypocrite Obama is….He goes on n on about how he values the people more than McCain but didn’t bother until he seen/was told about negative blogs to remember the people in the path of this storm.
I think the people of the Gulf coast would rather the GOP cancel its convention(Gustav) than cancel it’s response.(Katrina)
John McCain’s decision to Put hurricane Gustav before the
RNC convention, is just another example of how McCain
puts country above politics. America should elect
McCain & Palin to the Whitehouse in November,
for a return to character and integrity, instead of
showmanship and grandstanding.
No Wright, no Farrakahn, no Ayers, no Rezko,
no mean Michelle, NOBAMA
May God of Heaven protect you New Orleans from this tragic Hurricane. May the God of Abraham averts the projected tragedy, let it turn out insignificant if not entirely “toothless and harmless”.
In the meantime, let make record straight. McCain not forced to make changes to the RNC convention events because of generosity to the tax payers or love to the victims of the Hurricane. Not at all, he harvests “the Curse” the Obama’s haters prayed for to disrupt the Democrats’ Convention. The Hurricane is disrupting the Convention, that is all. McCain has no choice but a face-saving and crafty idea that he wants the convention to be service-oriented as a show of love. He should not receive a slight praise for an answered prayer to the Obama’s haters, a lesson to those who mention God’s name in prayer for ill-motives.
God protect the New Orleans.
I think McCain should post pone the conventon to a later date. The news reporters will not cover it because of the storm. Of course all news net works will not cover the conventon like they did the Demcrats It is all one sided towards the Dem.
