McCain, Obama camps clash over Palin’s experience

Democrats are taking aim at McCain’s selection of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin for the VP slot on the ticket, with a number of leaders questioning her readiness for office.

Statement by Obama spokesman Bill Burton:

“Today, John McCain put the former mayor of a town of 9,000 with zero foreign policy experience a heartbeat away from the presidency. Governor Palin shares John McCain’s commitment to overturning Roe v. Wade, the agenda of Big Oil and continuing George Bush’s failed economic policies — that’s not the change we need, it’s just more of the same.”

Statement by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi:

“John McCain’s selection of Sarah Palin raises serious questions about his judgment. Why, when the country is fighting two wars, facing an uncertain economy and an energy crisis, did Senator McCain make the choice that he did? Why, with so many other qualified women and men in his party, did John McCain choose Sarah Palin? Sarah Palin is not the right choice.”

Statement Sen. Chuck Schumer:

“After the great success of the Democratic convention, the choice of Sarah Palin is surely a Hail Mary pass. It is a real role of the dice and shows how John McCain, Karl Rove et al realize what a strong position the Obama-Biden team and Democrats in general are in in this election. Certainly the choice of Palin puts to rest any argument about inexperience on the Democratic team and while Palin is a fine person, her lack of experience makes the thought of her assuming the presidency troubling. I particularly look forward to the Biden-Palin debate in Missouri.”

However, the McCain campaign is responding by not only by arguing that Palin is more qualified for the Oval Office than Barack Obama but that the Democrat’s campaign is looking down on small town voters by discounting her mayoral experience.

Campaign spokesman Jill Hazelbaker: “It is pretty audacious for the Obama campaign to say that Governor Palin is not qualified to be Vice President. She has a record of accomplishment that Senator Obama simply cannot match. Governor Palin has spent her time in office shaking up government in Alaska and actually achieving results — whether it’s taking on corruption, passing ethics reform or stopping wasteful spending and the ‘bridge to nowhere.’ Senator Obama has spent his time in office running for President.”

The campaign’s Michael Goldfarb adds: “She’s the Governor of Alaska and was the mayor of a small town, meaning she has more executive experience than Barack Obama and Joe Biden put together. But more than that, given Barack Obama’s comments earlier this year that small-town Americans “cling” to guns, religion, and xenophobia out of economic anxiety, it’s troubling that Obama’s campaign has now attacked Governor Palin for having been the mayor of a small-town, as if that wouldn’t qualify her to carry Senator Obama’s bags.”

The Democrats have a great argument. President Palin or President Biden. Use that argument and ask President Oboma or President McCain.

I think she does have more experience at management than Biden or Obama.

Hello, that means she has more experience than Johm McCain as well, by that idiotic definition.

But, she might be able to teach him how to use the internet. You think?

I am an Obama supporter and grinned all the way to work today. What an insult to women to compare this mayor of 8,000 to a Hillary Clinton. Women who loved Hillary will go in droves to the Obama camp. Wow. The Democrats have just won this election.

Comment by Ross

It takes a lot of nerve for the party of the most unqualified presidential candidate in history to play the experience card. I guess Obama wants to pit his experience as a community organizer against a former Mayor and a sitting Governor. Wow.

Comment by Don

Sarah is someone out of the Washington loop, Biden has about 36 years inside Washington.
If we want reform in our politics, seems like the Republicans have someone who will fight their own party to fight corruption!! Character does matter and Sarah didnt get rid of her downs syndrome baby because it was going to be more difficult to raise. Pageantry over substance doesnt hold up in Presidential politics…

If the Republicans win the election… I’m moving to Canada.

Nancy Pelosi’s comment is amazing & shows just how out of touch she is. She is the least popular person in government & worried about Palin? Palin is clearly a woman of courage and character & could handle whatever comes to her. She does not depend just on herself & has proven that she is a leader. The Dems are just scared that the McCain/Palin ticket is just that! It’s the best ticket!

Comment by FlaLady

Okay, this is really pi*sing me off! The Dems, in all of their wisdom, decry this selection as pandering when they all but cheated their own female candidate out of the nomination. And stop lumping all women together with a list of women’s issues we all have to support! Men don’t have to put up with this garbage!
Finally, Obama supporters trumpeting the ‘inexperience’ call are showing their ignorance. Who is at the top of their ticket??? Give me a break!

I love it. I guess we’ll see what America thinks is more important…blacks or females.

Okay so the Republicans are dumber than I thought. First, you decide to choose an old war hero which is about all he’s done, who is lost with the true American people. John McCain is an old American who believes in all the contradictions of the Republican party full out. I understand the passion they have about what they call faith, but the faith is not true. These ANTI CHRISTIANS judge people which is a sin, then turn around praise God after its all said and done. That doesn’t qualify you as a Christian. Your personal relationship with God qualifies you as a Christian. Just because you say Obama isn’t a Christian doesn’t mean it isn’t so. I think the lady at the Democratic Convention said it best she looked up the information and found it was all lies. Lying won’t help you win another election. Secondly, McCain STILL HASN’T SAID WHAT HE WILL DO TO HELP THE AMERICAN PEOPLE. The republicans are up to the old tactics of making everyone “afraid” of Obama and really the American people should be scared of THEM. There is nothing they have done that impresses me and the mocking of Obama makes me even less fond of them. Please grow up and get some class. Also adding Pulin to your campaign won’t get the “Hillary” votes because most of those women don’t believe in “old” America. They believe in the “new” America. The women who believe in equal pay for equal work will not receive that voting Republican. The gay person who wants to walk down the street and not be “picked” on won’t vote for the “old America.” I was fooled by Bush once and for some odd reason the American people voted him in again. But look at what he has done to our country. Leading a false war is not impressive, driving up gas prices is not impressive, and not taking care of Katrina victims is not impressive. Anyone who is impressed by these policies are witless and simple minded and obviously easily pleased. Also I saw some lame from my state VA (which McCain will not win I promise you) stating these problems began in the Clinton era. The representative that told that lie is the reason he will not win VA as I am assuming he thinks he is because the people of VA are tired of these biased republicans running the nation. It a reason why we have a Democratic gov. and will have a Democratic president. If McCain really wants to help himself, he should focus on the issue and stop being the “5th grade bully” he has become. I’m not looking for a bully I’m looking for a leader and McCain doesn’t say “leader” to me. It doesn’t matter he was a POW, he’s a politician now with his own political agenda and I’m not buying what he’s selling.

Comment by Aaron from Colorado Springs

Say what you may, Palin has executive experience and Obama does NOT… neither does Joe Biden for that matter. There is a reason that Govenors find the Presidential race easier than Senators, they have executive experience and can prove that they can get things done. Obama can prove nothing except that he can give good speeches about how America should be a socialist nation. The campaign is between Obama and McCain and I find it hilarious that Obama feels the question of experience is now over. It’s like the fight is suddenly between Obama and Palin. Hey Obama, Palin is running for VICE president, so stop comparing yourself to her… you are running against McCain.

Comment by Mike Walker

Hmmmm Nancy Pelosi sounds like she is jealous of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin for being chosen as a VP cadidate by McCain. I guess Nancy needs to take lessons from the Govenor on how to get things done and not go home on vacation to avoid the coming loss by her party in the offshore drilling debacle. Mrs. Pelosi should be thrown out of office for her lack of concern over such an issue. Good job John McCain. As a Vietnam Vet, I say that we are not all old and screwed up. Thank you America!!!!

Michael Goldfarb, that is a great comeback. And for Pelosi, the last time I checked her approval rating, it was at single digit. And fit doesn’t matter who McCain whould have picked, they still would have criticized that person. Pelosi is just jealous that a woman 10 time prettier than her is going to be in the oval office.

Comment by P!NG

Agreed, Palin does have more experience running government than Obama, also as far as the foreign policy goes Obama has none to speak of to start off with.

Also the more trash the Democratic (LIBS) talk about Palin with such harsh tones of criticism, it goes more and more to prove that they are not interested in the rights of free women!!!

So let the libs be libs, and start the bashing of this talented REAL WORLD example of a real woman.

I don’t need to talk any more trash about the libs… they can dig their own hole, why should I do it for them.

Comment by Jean Calkins

I live in that small town where Sarah was Mayor. God help us if she gets into office. We are in for a bumpy ride. Check into the ongoing investigations on her. You may not like what you see. She is NOT a conservative as she claims.

She calls into the local radio stations that kiss her behind. She has been urged by other stations to call in, but she never will as they will put her feet to the fire. Take heed, America.

Shame on you John McCain for not doing your homework. Sadly, I will now have to vote for Obama.

Comment by Paul

I am completely baffled by these 2 comments from the Dems:

Barack Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton: “Today, John McCain put the former mayor of a town of 9,000 with zero foreign policy experience a heartbeat away from the presidency…”

New York Democratic Sen. Charles Schumer: “While Palin is a fine person, her lack of experience makes the thought of her assuming the presidency troubling…”

Now, correct me if I am wrong, but this only adds to the fire that Barack Obama doesn’t have experience either…and one can argue that Palin actually has more experience in that she IS actaully running something…the state of Alaska. Moreover, wasn’t it Bill Clinton who, 2 nights ago, said in his speech at the convention that people labelled him as inexperienced when he ran for the Presidency? As he put it: “Does this sound familiar?” So come on Dems…either you are saying that experience counts or not! What are the talking points on this one?

Finally, how amazing that this is a woman who seems to have gotten through all of her accomplishments on her own merit! Now you tell me if Hillary Clinton would have been elected to the US Senate had Bill not cheated on her.

Comment by Nancy Fox

McCain made the perfect choice. She is a class act, Very qualifed,. Very experienced. One that you can depend upon to make the right choice for America. I was so proud of her as she was speaking and accepting McCain ’s decision to have her for his vice president. No attacks, just facts. She definately knows what to say and when to say it. The world would be a much better place if all leaders and politicians were like her. Good luck to her and McCain, we so need them to keep America safe and number one .

Alaska? Alaska? Are you for real? What issues could she have encountered in this no mans land that would make her ready for the presidency. I applaud McSame for selecting a woman, too bad only reason for doing so was to generate a media buzz. There are plenty of other woman that are more qualified if he really wanted to be a “Maverick”. its so obvious this is just a ploy to win the election at any cost necessary. how could such an obvious patriot be so careless in the selection of the 2nd most powerful person in our country. i only pray the rest of our country see’s this for what it is, the last ditch effort of a desperate man and a desperate party!

Comment by S Byers

Did the Democrats worry about lack of foreign policy experience when Bill Clinton was first nominated? Hopefully, Palin will learn from McCain’s years of experience in this area. I can’t see Obama willing to play diligent student for his “underling”, a VP Biden.

THE DEMOCRATS ARE RUNNING SCARED …
Sarah Palin having been a mayor, and a governor with an 80% approval rating, while raising 5 children, is more experienced and more qualified to manage this country than Barack Obama … who was a community organizer, and spent half of his short time in the senate campaigning for President. Democrats brag about the success of their convention, when the only thing notable about it was the size of the crowd, and the fireworks. Obama’s speech was the same old platitudes and grand promises, with broad generalities on how how he would deliver. Elect McCain/Palin in November !!!

The comments by speaker Pelosi show just how shallow her thinking is. She is unable to recognize positive change when its right in front of her. Typical democrat “you need to change but don’t tell me how to live”

Comment by Joan C.

I didn’t think I would be this excited about a candidate for VP on the McCain ticket, but after hearing Sara Palin speak, I am convinced it was the right choice. Of course, Obama’s people came out and attacked her because she was a mayor of a “small” town before becoming Governor, a position they also dismiss. I’m sure that gave Obama support across America. I sometimes think the Dems are oblivious to the feelings of Americans, and how they feel about their lives. Above all of the problems we face, there is still a pride in ourselves, our country and our roots. I think the Dems have not figured that out yet.

Comment by Edward

McCain has pulled my vote off the fence. I suspect we’ll come to learn a great deal about Gov. Palin’s track record of smashing a mallet in the guts of waste, corruption and the good ole’boy network. I too am looking forward to the Palin Biden debate. Beyond a shadow of a doubt, she’ll be ready, will hand him his business as usual, arragont, Washington Insider head on a platter. Believe it. She is “tough as nails” and her job will be easy, point out that neither Biden or Obama have any experience at all running government.

Really though, I shouldn’t focus on Biden. Obama is actually the one running for President on the basis of a term in a state legislature ( I suspect most of that time was spent day dreaming of last night ), a month or two - on the job in the U.S. Senate; a book and some good speeches. Zero, none, zip, nada executive experience. Again, Obama has absolutely no experience for the office he seeks. The President of the United States is an executive position, not legislative. Indeed Gov. Palin has more experience then the entire Democratic ticket. And we’ll be learning how successful she has been in that capacity. I can’t be any happier. Youth, integrity, experience, common sense and a track record, yes, an actual track record of changing that which is broken. Now that is change I can believe in.

Senators Biden and Obama, what have you changed in your combined time in Washington?

Comment by OldRuss

I find the Democrat response to Governor Palin to be haughty and arrogant. It is most unfortunate that Barack Obama’s surrogates have chosen to respond in this manner.

Comment by Dan O'Friel, Oxnard, CA

The Democrats are just glad, and probably a little shocked, that they are finally able to find someone prominent who “appears” to have less experience than Senator Obama. They shouldn’t bang on it too hard though since Senator Obama himself has strongly downplayed the need for experience.

Comment by OldRuss

I find the Democrat response to Governor Palin to be haughty and arrogant. It is most unfortunate that Barack Obama’s surrogates found it necessary to resond in this manner.

Comment by Tom Roesch

If someone questions whether Obama has sufficient experience to be president, he attributes it to racism. When Obama questions Governor Palin’s experience, isn’t it fair to suggest he might be sexist?

Look at the evidence: Obama selected a man as his vice presidential candidate over Hillary Clinton, who was clearly the preferred choice of his own party. Perhaps he felt threatened by a strong woman who might take away some of his spotlight. Isn’t that a pretty good litmus test of a sexist?

Comment by Gary Garloch

McCain should have listened to Paris Hilton explaining issues as a good looking female and the Democrats chose Biden. Sarah Paline not as hot babe addresses Alaska issues, how many dollars do residents get back from the State each year.

Comment by Dave Tanner

Re Sarah Palin - a real breath of fresh air. The Democrats screamed immediately that she was too young and too inexperienced, yet Kennedy was younger and less experienced and they had no problem with him in 1960. What that says to me is that the Democrats think a man of Kennedy’s age and experience can be president but that an older woman with more experience can not be vice presidend.

No wonder Hillary missed out with this attitude towards women.
Dave Tanner

Comment by Jerome Mayle

Can anyone say landslide? This truly put McCain in on heck of an awful position. EXTREAMLY poor judgment if you ask me. I agree this also make’s it hard to argue on the grounds that Obama is not ready because of his inexperience. WTF….this is a truly disgusting slap in the face to the men who actually ran for president along side McCain and are a million times more qualified than her.

Comment by Lynn

Obama came is scared. Look at Nancy Peloci’s statement - it is void of any sensible objection to Sarah Palin. And…if you turn it around…you can ask that ask the same question of the Democrats….Why, when the country is fighting two wars, facing an uncertain economy and an energy crisis, did The Democrats make the choice that they did?

If Obama is considered a “breath of fresh air” for the Democrats, then certainly Sarah Palin is that and more for the Republicans - a “breath of fresh air” with lots of CHUTZPAH to boot. Yet when I look at the differences between Obama’s professional resume and Sarah’s - she beats him hands down!!!! No question!!! How big of a budget has he managed? I believe that Sarah has managed a $6.6 BILLION dollar budget. How many “good old boys” has he taken on in government? I believe Sarah has taken on an entire state and cleaned up the dishonesty - and that bridge to no where along the way….WOW!! Her approval rating is 80% in her state. They love her.

I believe that past performance is the predictor of future performance. If Americans want someone who is going to “clean up” our government - and if we are looking for someone who has a PROVEN track record - Sarah Palin certainly has that.

Comment by Nick

The hypocrisy of the GOP strikes again.

This is no more than a strategic gimmick to attract disaffected Hillary voters, with McCain attempting to put himself and his ability to get elected ahead of the safety and security of our country. If he is so adament about the White House being occupied by someone with years of talent and experience, why would McCain choose a running mate who is far from qualified to take the reigns of this country should something happen to him?

Country first? More like McCain first.

Palin’s comments about her child born with down syndrome are both wonderful and endearing (”I’m looking at him right now, and I see perfection. Yeah, he has an extra chromosome. I keep thinking, in our world, what is normal and what is perfect?”). And yet with a flair of hypocrisy she opposes equal rights for homosexuals. Gov. Palin, if your son or daughter were born a homosexual or became a homosexual, would you want to deny him or her the same rights as his or her fellow Americans? After all, “what is normal and what is perfect?”

Comment by Mike Saint-Amour

This choice is brilliant!! What can the democrats say? They can not make one criticism without questioning their own choice. At least as much experience as Barack, and a woman. The Democratss picked the status quo but the Republicans did the maverick/change thing. This is going to be one interesting election!!

The Obamaniacs and liberal leftist Demos campaign is based as usual on lies, innuendoes and distortion of the facts. Spreading the false news by the official Obama’s mouthpiece: Bill Burton, that she is mayor of a small town while ignoring the fact that she is a Governor shows clearly their Machiavelli type of tactics. Nancy Pelosi should limit herself to her new area of expertise: Catholic Theologian instead of criticizing Governor Palin. Schumer is showing his old boys club mentality that apparently has not evolved in the Demo party. Apparently the party of “change that we cannot believe” is gingerly going back to its old tricks

IT’S ABOUT TIME, AMERICA, THAT CONGRESS WORKED FOR THE PEOPLE AND PASSED LAWS AND W O R K E D INSTEAD OF ACTING LIKE A 3RD GRADE SCHOOL CLASS WANTING THEIR OWN WAY ALL THE TIME. It is hard for me to believe that John McCain would chose out of all those qualified candidates that have had state, national, local, and foreign affairs experience to announce to fellow Repulicans that he has chosen a person who was a Mayor of a town of 9,000, a Governor of just two years with the only reputation she had was stopping the funding of the bridge to nowhere. This hardly qualifies this person as an individual who could one day be the next commmander in chief if John McCain is unable to be President due to health or mental reasons.

Not only that, McCain only met this person once and that was in Februrary of 2008. If McCain really wanted to pick a dark horse why didn’t he chose someone from the Midwest or the East Coast? Or even better yet, chose someone with some company or corporation experience such as the CEO of FEDEX Coporation.

It bloggles the mind why McCain would chose such a dismal prospect for a running mate of the Republican Party.

Comment by Deborah Dirk-Halley

It is really amazing how John McCain can chose a person with little or no experience in foreign affairs, military, economics, healthcare, education, national security, emergency management experience, and still nominate someone unknown out of the norm and expect the Republican Party to accept it.

I’ve been a strong McCain supporter since 2000 but he lost me today. His campaign has been hijacked by the religious right. I can’t imagine a worse choice, she has virtually no education, no experience, and worst of all she’s a creationist. Alaska is in the middle of nowhere, it has no connection to the rest of the US both litterly and figuratively. It’s economy is based on fishing and oil, it’s not like any other state in the union. How can someone who’s only experience is two years as governor of our most isolated state run the country. She’s a cuter version of Dan Quayle, I’m not voting for a QILF.

I have one question. Has anyone seen a post by an Obama supporter that didn’t call anybody a name that did not agree with them. I have never seen such disgusting people.

Reply to David’s comment:

“I love it. I guess we’ll see what America thinks is more important…blacks or females.”

What an ignorant comment. You know, there are millions of us in America that are BLACK and FEMALE. I’m voting for the candidate that most accurately represents my ideals; and that just happens to be Obama. You must be the one voting according to race/gender since that it how you judge other people’s choices.

Despite all this talk about “historic” elections, there’s 3/4 people on the ballot are still white.

To all those out there who are posting that Palin’s “executive” experience as a mayor and governor (of a state with more reindeer than people) somehow makes her more qualified to run the country than a senator, all I have to say is this…

John Kennedy was a senator… George Bush was a governor… End of story..

Comment by McCain / Palin

B.O. thinks he deserves this, and is owed it…due to what ?

Don’t worry America, it will end all right_ with McCain / Palin in the White house.

As a Hillary supporter, I am voting for John McCain and Govenor Sarah Palin. I am so happy that he picked a woman of her stature. I and many women I know cannot vote for Obama. He is inexperienced with radical connections. I am shocked that the Democratic Party and the press would rather have him than an experienced woman. We all feel that something is terribly wrong with this thinking and it’s scaring many people.. Think about it. Mr. Obama with the resume of a social worker running for President. THAT IS SCARY. Also since when does the press take sides in politics. I thought they were to report the news, not make the news. I have never seen anything like this press coverage. It was a disgrace how they treated Hillary. THIS IS SCARY.
