Day Two: GOP Drafts Platform and Divisions Between the Party and John McCain Appear
MINNEAPOLIS–
Republicans met to draft their platform again today and divisions were visible between the Party and their candidate, John McCain. Delegates were split on the issue of whether to add drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, ANWR, to their platform. The committee was split almost entirely in half with half wanting to add it, but the other delegates not wanting to include such a departure from McCain’s stance in the election platform. McCain is against drilling in ANWR saying that it is called a refuge “for a reason.”
A delegate from Alaska, David Boyle, proposed the amendment to the offshore drilling section of the platform. He wanted to include language that left no doubt to the Party’s stance in support of drilling in ANWR.
The amendment failed with many members citing the need to keep the language general so not to create conflict between the “platform and the candidate.” But, there was heated debate between the delegates. Sandra McDade from Louisiana said that she does want to elect a Republican president, but that she didn’t believe the Party did that by “giving into things that let the nominee know how strong the sentiment is.” Delegates cited the overwhelming support with their home base for drilling in ANWR as a reason to include it, but the desire to not embrace such a rift with the candidate won over. However, many members who opposed the amendment did cite their personal agreement with drilling in ANWR.
The debate on ANWR continued and another amendment passed the committee. They decided to add language that would “oppose any efforts and action to permanently block access to the coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.” This was also proposed by a delegate from Alaska, Kim Skipper, and now keeps the issue of drilling open to further debate.
The issue of climate change was not debated whatsoever by the committee. The platform, for the first time, links climate change to human activity, but there was no discussion with the full committee and the language will remain. It reads, “The same human economic activity that has brought freedom and opportunity to billions has also increased the amount of carbon in the atmosphere.”
The platform also has a more hard line stance than John McCain when it comes to the controversial issues of abortion and gay marriage. The platform calls for constitutional bans on both issues something John McCain is against– more clear divisions between the Party platform and the candidate.

Spineless wimps.
“The same human economic activity that has brought freedom and opportunity to billions has also increased the amount of carbon in the atmosphere.”
Suckers.
The Stupid Party hard at work.
McCain is an “embarrassment to the Republican Party”, ” he is anti-conservative”, “hypocrite”, “vicious”, “reckless”, “arrogant”, ‘trigger happy”,”a risk for our international affairs”, just to quote some of McCains personality descriptions made by fellow Republicans. This are more than enough reasons to not vote for McCain. REPUBLICANS FOR OBAMA 08. We need to change Bush’s and McCain’s way to run the Nation.

It is one thing that there is a dispute with the Dems and which candidate they wanted more. But here is proof that the Reps don’t even agree with their Candidate. I just love when one of the advisors for the Republican Party stated that McCain’s statements do not represent those of the Republican Party. THEY CHOSE HIM TO REPRESENT THEM.
UNTERESTING, TAKE A VACATION! YOU HAVE EARNED IT
This is why you do not nominate a liberal for the Republican ticket. I am so glad there is such division. Because we are going to see if Republicanism represents true conservatism or if Republicanism represents watered down liberalism. This is huge to see how the platform is written up.
What, a negative article about the GOP on FOX? And you all said it couldn’t happen.
I see no issues with Senator McCain not being in lock step with this delegation. They are not even in lock step with each other. Just like I don’t agree with everything that McCain stands for I am not going to agree with everything this delegation writes. If I expect the to agree with the President 100% of the time, I better run for President!
Remeber, everyone is welcome to be and vote Republician. It is the true part of inclusion. You don’t have to agree with us 100% on everything. For me I like the party because it is pro-business, pro-captialism and doesn’t look to the government to provide me everything from cradle to grave. It’s the party that wants and encourages me to take oppourtunities that are presented to me, make oppourtunities that are not and, as I am more successful, provide opportunities to others.
Democrats want the governement to provide for you. Your healthcare, your higher education, your employment, your housing and your retirement. To me this is socialism and it is not what America was founded on or where I want to see America go. That’s not the kind of change I think we need. The opportunities are out there, it is up to the individual to work and take advantage of them.
I will tell you right now! If John McCain and his GOP croonies think they can brow beat the conservative movement and win this election then they’d may as well go ahead and cancel the RNC convention for next week! If McCain and the GOP party leaders keep this up then I along with many conservatives will revolt from the party and either vote for Obama or some other candidate such as Ron Paul or Bob Barr. I would rather see anyone else win besides McCain if this is how he is going to lead the Republican Party! McCain is showing his true colors and so are these big government liberal Republicrats who are drafting the party platform.
I’d like to know how any republican could ever vote for Obama and still call themselves a republican!!! By the way. John Mccain is a federalist. He’s not going
be all over any constitutional bans. Let the states handle what the states are supposed to handle!
Hope Mccain Takes Cantor for VP!

I don’t see the significance of the disagreement between McCain and the rest of The GOP (including his running mate) regarding drilling in ANWR. If Bush couldn’t get drilling in ANWR approved in 6 years with a Republican Congress, it won’t get approved by a Democratic Congress. Offshore drilling, which Democrats are starting to consider, and development of alternative energy sources will reduce the demand for ANWR drilling in the long run.
When there is no chance of something happening, a disagreement about it is not significant to the voters.
