The RNC Meets to Draft Their Platform: Sparks Fly on the Issue of Illegal Immigration

Minneapolis–

All eyes may be on Denver this week, but the Republican National Committee began their meetings to draft an election platform today ahead of next week’s convention. Sparks flew when delegates got into debate over illegal immigration, which reflected where John McCain originally stood on the issue, but has now taken a more conservative stance.

Delegates were split into different subcommittees and it was in the national security meeting where members got into heated discussion surrounding the issues of amnesty and English as the official language of the United States.

Two delegates wanted to harden the language surrounding the issue of amnesty. The draft read, “We oppose amnesty.” But, delegates from North Carolina and Colorado wanted to include opposition to “comprehensive immigration reform” because they believe it is a code word for amnesty. This sparked a heated discussion between members with a delegate from Washington DC who said that the Republican Party is a “not a xenophobic party, not an intolerant party. We are a compassionate party that insists on the rule of law and endorses federal law,” said Bud McFarlane. Kendal Unruh from Colorado, who wanted to include “opposition to comprehensive immigration reform” to the draft, seemed to take offense to that statement citing her missionary work and saying that she would “never have the label” of xenophobic “slapped on me.” She continued to press that the committee add the tougher language to stop “behind the door tactics” to prevent “amnesty” of illegal aliens.

McFarlane was joined by several other members including from borders states such as New Mexico that said if the amendment was added it would give the impression that the Republican Party was not interested in fixing the immigration problems facing the country and the Republicans had “historically welcomed immigrants.”

Unruh cited McCain’s departure from his original immigration legislation as a reason for adding the opposition to comprehensive immigration reform, “Our nominee has tried to use this language and he has now backed away, Unruh said. “If he has backed away from it then I think it is OK to put it in writing.” Unruh was referring to McCain’s original immigration legislation last year that called for reforming the immigration system by tightening the U.S. borders, while providing a path to citizenship for twelve million illegal immigratns. The legislation did not not pass and McCain now rejects that stance. After much debate the amendment was not adopted and the language will remain as, “We oppose amnesty” without a mention of comprehensive immigration reform.

The immigration debate continued when the topic of English being the “accepted” language of the country opposed to the “official” language of the United States. The draft stated that English is the “common” and “accepted” language. The delegates from North Carolina and Colorado again wanted stronger language to make English the “official” language of the country.

Sam Winder from New Mexico wanted to add language that welcomed other languages, but did state that English was the official language of the country. Disagreement between the two sides continued, but a compromise was agreed on and put into the draft.

The debate was filled with words such as a “friendly debate” and “respectful disagreement” but it was clear that behind the friendly terminology there was real dispute among the members, especially with the thorny issue of illegal immigration.

Another topic under national security was how strong the language in the platform should be concerning Iran. The delegate from Illinois, Rich Williamson took a swipe at Barack Obama with an amendment to pledge that there be no discussions with Iran until they suspend uranium enrichment and end their support of terrorism. He said this is one of the “clear contrasts” with Obama and John McCain and it shows the “substantial experience” that McCain has on the issue of national security.

One change from the 2004 Republican platform is there is no mention of President Bush in the document after the preamble. In the 2004 platform document Bush was mentioned over 200 times. The committee says this is not to distance itself from President Bush and his low approval ratings, but rather that the document was more of a “state of the union” that praised and approved the first term of President Bush. The committee also wanted a shorter document than the last platform draft–it is half the size of the last document.

The RNC calls this platform drafting process the most transparent and open in their history. They received over 12,000 submissions from the public via YouTube addressing concerns people wanted to see in the platform. Over the next two days the blueprint will be written and they hope to finish the document tomorrow night before it is voted on the convention floor Monday.

The Democrats met in the beginning of August in Cleveland to draft their platform ahead of this week’s convention. Their platform was adopted on the convention floor yesterday.

Just what I expected from the GOP. More of the same old garbage! Of course the reason the RNC won’t remove so called “Comprehensive Immigration Reform”(Amnesty) is because it is defacto AMNESTY for foreign nationals! Then these fumbling idiots can’t figure out why America is becoming more and more socialist in nature??? It’s because we are importing poverty from abroad and steadily increasing the size and scope of government programs! It will reach the point when more people are on government social programs than are actually working a job!! Then what?? Our country goes bust and the economy and our government collapse because it’s no longer possible to maintain all of the wasteful bloated social services programs being lavished upon illegal aliens who shouldn’t even be here in the first place! I guess it’s okay to wreck the entire nation just so our two political parties can fight over votes, money and power!!! These people are wrecking our country and they are either too stupid or too out of touch to get it!!

The Food Network Interviews John McCain;

Interviewer: Presidential campaigning is a lot of long hours on the road. Are you able to make time for breakfast while on the campaign trail?

McCain: As a POW in Vietnam, I wasn’t served breakfast. Sometimes, I was lucky enough to find a bug. But, that was hardly a meal and less nutritious than what’s in a small bowl of fruit loops.

Interviewer: What’s your favorite ice cream?

McCain: There were no fridges or freezers anywhere to be found in jungles of Vietnam during the war. So, no, no ice cream.

Interviewer: How do you like your steak?

McCain: I was once tied to a stake while being held prisoner during the Vietnam war…

Interviewer: Let’s move on…Which do you prefer, beer or wine?

McCain: People may think I whine too much about my Vietnam POW experience, but it is uniquely part of who I am.

I am suprised John McCain did not ask Juan Hernandez to draft the RNC’s platform on illegal immigration. He already appointed him to be his hispanic outreach director, eventhough he openly supports open borders and is an advocate with La Raza in promoting this idea. Wake up you so called Republicans and realize what these leaders on both sides are doing to this country in regards to illegal immigration.

AAron is a foolish liberal. Keep up the good work DNC your making it easier and easier to state the case that the left are a bunch of loons.

I am glad McCain is not going to go for amnisty for illegals as that was the one issue I had a problem with. If he sticks to tightening the borders and freeing our nation of illegals I’ll be pleased with his policies so far. Go McCain. Better than Open boarders and so forth like some candidates want.

How about just get back to the basics and call illegal immigrants what they are - ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS- keep it simple. ENFORCE THE LAWS WE ALREADY HAVE - WE DON’T NEED NEW LAWS. When the current laws were written we were told that, the problems we are now facing, we wouldn’t be facing- that’s what Ted Kennedy said back on the 70’s and again in the 80’s when questions were asked about HIS immigration bills.
Re: English as the OFFICIAL language- again - keep it simple. Yes, other languages can and will be spoken - that’s a given -BUT ENGLISH is the official language.
Don’t get into the “It all depends on what is is” mentality.
KEEP IT SIMPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I support very strong language on immigration. Many of the illiegals children are being tought that the south west was stolen from Mexico. They know nothing about how the Mexican American war began or that many mexicans supported the war on the side of America or Texas and California. They don’t even know what was decided in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. They don’t even know anything about the Mexican revolution of 1910. They dont’t believe anything about the Gadston Purchase. We need to have very strong language on immigration, NO AMNESTY, ENGLISH AS OFFICIAL LANGUAGE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA AND CHILDREN IF BORN FROM ILLIEGAL ALIENS THE CHILDREN DO NOT GET AMERICAN CITIZENSHIP OR IF BORN TO PARENTS THAT HAVE NOT BECOME LEGAL CITIZENS THROUGH LEGAL MEANS DO NOT GET CITIZENSHIP UNTIL PARENTS BECOME LEGAL CITIZENS. ALL LEGAL IMMIGRINTS MUST ALSO PASS A PHYSICAL AND HEALTH EXAM. In addition we should have a better workers program so that those who wish may come and work, but must return to country of origin each year. Something like the Pesero program from the 50’s and 60’s. But every detail needs to be stated so that there is no question on what is expected.

John McCain is not someone who can lead America, let alone the GOP. The GOP base does not understand his true views on many issues–he is feeding lines to those who WANT to believe he’s conservative but look at HIS choices–Pro-choice VP? pro-illegal immigration; pro-gay rights. Beyond this, there is the psychology of bringing up his torture every time he faces tough questions–he just did it again on Jay Leno when Leno kept ribbing him about his enormous wealth/houses. Pat Buchanan commented on MSNBC that who can knock a guy who married a wealthy heiress–that’s an American success story. But people with true family values know that leaving your wife and kids to jet around with a hot young thing is not the way to behave. I’m concerned that when the heat is on in the kitchen, McCain is going to crack.

John McCain thinks it’s a good idea to supplement the fallout of Mexico’s socialism and corruption by taking most of its impoverished population and putting them on the back of American tax payers. If we could put extra tax burden on just the liberals and pc do-gooders who are trying to buy their votes then I’d be fine with it but I find myself with out a votable candidate this time around.

NO AMNESTY EVER!

Any party that would reward lawlessness is no party at all.

Ronald Reagan called the 1986 amnesty the “biggest mistake” of his presidency.

Why would we repeat it?

I WILL NOT VOTE FOR ANY CANDIDATE WHO SUPPORTS LEGALIZATION OF ILLEGAL ALIENS!

It’s bad for the working class, it’s bad for the middle class, it’s bad for the rule of law, it’s bad for sovereignty, it’s bad for law enforcement, it’s bad for crime rates, it’s bad for assimilation, it’s bad for America!

This is GREAT news that the Republicans want to stop the ILLEGAL INVASION——-not reward/accommodate the illegals!!!

NO AMNESTY!!

CLOSE/SECURE THE BORDERS!!!

ENGLISH IS OUR ONE AND ONLY LANGUAGE OF BUSINESS, GOVERNMENT, EDUCATION, ETC.

E-VERIFY SO THAT ILLEGALS CANNOT GET JOBS!!

ILLEGALS DO NOT GET WELFARE, WIC, FOODSTAMPS, EDUCATION BENEFITS, NON-EMERGENCY MEDICAL, ETC.

NO SANCTUARY CITIES!!

ALL POLICE ARE TRAINED/CERTIFIED THROUGH THE FEDERAL 287G PROGRAM—-SO THAT THEY CAN ASSIST ICE WITH ARRESTS/DEPORTATIONS ANYTIME THAT THEY COME INTO CONTACT WITH ILLEGALS.

THIS IS WHAT THE REPUBLICANS WANT TO DO!!!

What is Obama and the Democrats promising??? Obama has promised them amnesty, jobs, welfare, wic, foodstamps, education benefits, health care, drivers’ licenses, etc.—–and he said that YOUR children should learn to speak Spanish!!!

SAY NO TO OBAMA—–VOTE FOR MCCAIN!!

Otherwise, your children and grandchildren will have NO rights/opportunities in this country!!!

I guess this is a code phrase for Flip-Flop. For some reason Fox News will not call it what it is. Must be all that “fair and Balanced” Reporting.
And to Rusty maybe you should look at the most important symbol of OUR great County the Statue of liberty. On which is inscribed:
“Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
The greatest phrase that explains the Heart upon which this country was founded. So before you open your ignorant mouth (or type with your ignorant fingers) maybe you should learn a little bit of U.S. History. Because without those foreign Nationals, You would not be here. Period.

They just want what they want and our govt. gives it to them!! They aren’t here to do the jobs Americans won’t do…..there are here to do the jobs at half the price; putting Americans out of work and making businessmen wealthy in the process. GOP get it right. Settle the issue of illegal immigration and the deate as english as the official national language once and for all. Be firm. When we make this subject a real issue instead of just giving lip service this will lock the election for us if we get it right and get the message out to the voting people.

I keep hearing the talking heads telling me what the average American People want but for some reason no one will touch the immigration and language issues with a 10 foot poll. If the talking heads and members of the deligation would just talk to average Americans they will see that the issue of immigration is at the top of a vast majority of citizens in this country.

Stand up, grow a set, and show some real leadereship. Illegal Immigration should be moved to the top of the agenda if we want to win this election.

While many will agree McCain was not the Republican 1st choice, everyone can agree he is better than the current alternative. That is, unless you want a neo-socialist running this country.

Obama has has learned from the past, unlike John Kerry, he does not want to be singled out for flip-flopping on the issues. His plan is to make sure that NO ONE knows what he stands for…. oh ya, he stands for change. I bet he can’t wait to get into oval office and surrender to Russia. This way he and his comrades can truly do what is best for the people of this country. How can anyone vote Democrat, when the best they can come up with is this anti-American, socialist, Kennedy puppet!

The problem today is that we have immigrants coming into this country who have no idea why America has become the greatest country in the world. And of course that wouldn’t be a real problem in and of itself if half the legal citizens weren’t as clueless they. Freedom carries with it a great responsibility for its citizens not to abuse or use the government to enhance their own welfare. That’s where our citizens have failed. We are rapidly becoming a “cradle to grave” socialist state and the drain on our economy is becoming overwhelming. We have remained free, up to this point, because men of vision realized the importance of maintaning a stong military defense. But it has become apparent that Democrats, like the Clintons, don’t mind cutting defense in order to satisfy their constituent’s socialistic demands. We have protected Europe and the rest of the free world with our military for over 100 years and they have invested next to nothing to help. They have instead sunk their capital into socialism and are barely able to remain solvent. We can’t have socialism and maintain the ability to protect ourselves and the rest of the world. Something’s got to give. Socialism will destroy us sooner or later.

We are sick of the abortion debate, and the religous nuts controlling the party. They have endgaged in fraud with the Democrats on “Immigration Reform” to include amnesty for illegal aliens and ingnored fiscal responsibility on their watch.

They consistently betray conservative principles and have made themselves obsolete to the restrained government principles of their own party.

What is lacking today is personal courage. People do not want to be labeled xenophobic. Why not? It is not xenophobic to want to protected your country from the ocean of illegal aliens crossing our border.

What we need are people who will stand up for this country with pride and protect what we have left.

Two years ago the government changed the number of illegals in the country to 12 million, using a different formula for counting them. In truth is is closer to 20 million, if not more. And every day I personnally see more coming over the border. The Pew Institute used numbers from the census to come to the 12 million figure. I am sure all illegal aliens did not respond to the census.

The fence does not work, we need troops on the border. That is a fact.

Until Mexico, the sixth richest country in the world, steps up and helps their own, we will continue to see illegal aliens sneaking through our backyards on their way to your community.

Where has common sense gone? We need to obviously get active in the party and replace these loons at the top.

I couldn’t agree more with Eric from CA. There is not a dimes worth of difference between the Democrats and Republicans on the way to handle the illegal immigration issue. Simply put, the Democratic and Republican leadership want the American citizenry to foot the bill for the illegal entry and residence of tens of millions of Mexico’s citizens and their children, and this at a time that the two party system has almost brought the nation to utter ruin, with outsourcing, insourcing, and foreign wars. Wow! So the vast infrastructure of schools, government programs, welfare, and all the rest, that was created for Americans at a time of prosperity is to be kept up and even expanded (think of all the schools being built) by the citizenry’s taxes. Where else do people think the money is going to come from. It is surreal. Schools were closing in the eighties and tax burdens on the citizenry were going down. Now schools can be built fast enough, all at the citizenry’s expense, and no end is in sight to the massive, unrelenting illegal immigration. Americans must not get it. It’s a recipe for middle class poverty, if ever there was one.
