Delegate Diaries: Democratic Convention

Reporter’s Notebook: The Clinton ‘Catharsis?’

On the eve of the Democratic convention, FOXNews.com held a “meet and greet” with a group of delegates who have come to Denver to unite with fellow Democrats and cement their party’s nominee.  But out of the 20 delegates who attended the gathering, 15 were pledged to Hillary Clinton rather than expected nominee Barack Obama.

The delegates, many of whom expressed dissatisfaction over Obama’s decision to reject Clinton as his running mate, gathered at the Wynkoop Brewery to volunteer as writers for FOXNews.com’s “Delegate Diaries” - a blog consisting of delegates’ first hand accounts at the conventions.

“When I initially got the news that Biden was the VP choice, I had mixed emotions,” said Nikema Williams, Public Policy Manager for Planned Parenthood of Georgia and a pledged Clinton delegate.

Williams said she was “a little discouraged” to hear that Clinton had been overlooked but has come around to some extent. She said Biden is a “great nominee” because he filled perceived holes in Obama’s resume, especially in regard to foreign policy experience, though she noted that Clinton was equally qualified for the position.

“This convention, I hope, will bring out Hillary and appreciate her for all of the work she’s done, especially for putting health care at the forefront,” she said.

Colton Crawford - an 18-year-old Washington delegate and staunch Clinton supporter - said he was overjoyed when he learned that the New York senator’s name would be placed into the roll call.

“It validates the delegates that were elected for her,” he said. “I feel that without her being on the ballot, the delegates she has would be disenfranchised.

“She was the best candidate, but the delegate count does not agree with that.  However, she’s still my favorite.”

Both Williams and Crawford did not indicate whom they would cast their vote for during the nominating process, but Virginia delegate John Flannery did not hesitate to say “Clinton.”

“I’m going to vote for Hillary Clinton on the vote on the floor as provided by Barack Obama’s agreement with Senator Clinton and then I’m going to support the Democratic ticket with enthusiasm,” Flannery said.

“I thought she’d be a great leader for America at a time when we sorely need one,” he added.

Flannery and others say they have no intention of protesting Obama’s nomination - or voting for McCain in November, as some Clinton supporters have indicated they would do.

“Politics is the art of the possible, and flexibility is something that’s absolutely necessary to bring people together,” Flannery said.

Lon Seidman - an Obama delegate who first backed Biden during the primary campaign - said he was angered at the prospect of Clinton supporters backing McCain.

“We’re the Democratic Party. We conducted a democratic process.  The person with the most delegates at the end of the day is the winner and I hope people will recognize that,” Seidman said, noting that his wife is a Clinton delegate.

“There will be people, I’m sure, who are not satisfied with the outcome of the election, but look at the numbers.  Barack Obama is the winner.”
