Obama Slams McCain for Being Out of Touch
Barack Obama and his campaign went on the offensive today, gleefully seizing upon John McCain’s comments to Politico, where the Republican senator couldn’t remember exactly how many homes he and his very wealthy wife Cindy own. “I think — I’ll have my staff get to you,” McCain said when asked.
Cue the Obama campaign, which has been attempting to paint the Republican as out of touch with regular Americans. After McCain told Pastor Rick Warren at a forum in California last weekend that his definition of rich was those making $5 million, Obama has mentioned it at nearly every event, joking that if you’re pulling in $3 million, you must be middle class.
At a town hall outside of Richmond, Virginia, the Democrat was sure to point out the gaffe. “Somebody asked John McCain, ‘How many houses do you have?’ and he said, ‘I’m not sure - I’ll have to check with my staff.’ True quote! ‘I’m not sure, I’ll have to check with my staff.’ So they asked his staff and he said, ‘At least four.’ ‘At least four.’ Now think about that – I guess if you think that being rich means you gotta make five million dollars, and if you don’t’ know how many houses you have, then it’s not surprising that you might think the economy is fundamentally strong!” he said incredulously.
And while he may have pulled in $4.2 million last year himself (not quite rich according to John McCain), Obama the every man continued, “But if you’re like me and you’ve got one house, or you were like the millions of people who are struggling right now to keep up with their mortgage so that they don’t lose their home, you might have a different perspective.”
Obama Most Americans, however, have the perception that the Democrat is “an elitist” - partly because both former rival Hillary Clinton and the GOP have used some of Obama’s less than eloquent statements. Remember arugula? Or bitter?
In case you forgot, the McCain camp quickly responded to Obama’s comments with a statement to remind voters. “Does a guy who made more than $4 million last year, just got back from vacation on a private beach in Hawaii and bought his own million-dollar mansion with the help of a convicted felon really want to get into a debate about houses? Does a guy who worries about the price of arugula and thinks regular people “cling” to guns and religion in the face of economic hardship really want to have a debate about who’s in touch with regular Americans?” a McCain spokesman said.
It is true that Obama leads a privileged life today with his large home in Chicago and having the resources to send his children to a private school, but the candidate comes from a modest background - something he’s had to inform voters along the campaign trail.
Back in April when his “bitter” remarks were at their peak in the news cycle, Obama was asked about the elitist description at a town hall. “I am amused about this notion,” he began, describing being raised by a single mom who relied on food stamps, only recently paying off student loans. “When somebody makes that argument, particularly given that I spent my entire life working with workers, low income communities to try to make people’s lives a little bit better, then that’s when you know we’re in political silly season,” he said.
While the war between the two candidates as to who is more in our out of touch with regular Americans is likely to continue through the election, Obama happily pointed out today that McCain owns seven homes and his campaign put out an ad called “Seven.”

Seems to me that Obama has his head in the sand…..sure hard to understand why “the number of houses one owns/manages” has anything to do with “being out of touch” with the voters. If this is all the dems/Obama/Soros operatives see as an issue then THEY have real problems!!!! That McCain has used his money to purchase homes legally and operates them as rentals or for any reason that is legal just what does that show???…his ability to purchase homes and make it profitable….and that is acceptable in america. Is Obama wondering why McCain has not given any to charity or poor people or does he not rent to certain groups????…NO! Obama should stop knit picking McCain. But since Obama keeps attacking McCain, it’s becoming apparent Obama has nothing to say that is constructive or worthwhile. Obama is all gloss on the outside and nothing special on the inside. Obama has not revealed an economic plan to get us on the road to recovery. Obama has not talked about anything substantial; he vacillates on many, many issues. He’s a fence sitter, teetering one way or the other depending on which way the wind is blowing. I did not realize that all the people living in Hawaii were rich people on holidys; I always assumed it was another state and how terrible of Obama to go home for his holidays instead of going to Dubai or Bermuda. 1) comparing the Obamas’ wealth to the McCains’ is ludicrous. Despite a good year in book sales, the Obama’s are not in the same league financially. Obama came from extremely humble roots and is a self-made man. Calling him an elitist is a flat out lie.
2) I believe that all beaches in the state of Hawaii are public (feel free to check the facts) making it impossible to vacation on a private beach in Hawaii. He went HOME for vacation - how is that elitist?

This is all rediculous. Wealth does not equate to being out of touch. They both need to move on. Look at their comments about the middle class, how they treat them, and how they want to help them. I think obama is fortunate to have paid his loans off, I will likely be paying mine until I am approximately 57 (and he probably had much more than I did).
Obama is misleadng the public that investing in real estate is a bad thing - the economy could use more real estate investors right now.

It is obvious McCain doesn’t know what it’s like to struggle–to wonder whether the car will break down before the next paycheck, whether the child/grandchild (for those taking care of their grandkids) is going to need medical attention or medications you can’t afford, worrying about whether to pay the bills or buy food. He doesn’t know what it’s like to worry everyday of what will happen if you health fails and you can’t work–knowing that no income means no home, no car, no hope. He doesn’t understand that the increase in gas means an increase EVERY week in money paid to gas which boils down to less money for food, bills, and other necessities. In the past year I have seen my gas costs triple, and there’s nothing I can do about that. My rent has gone up, and there’s nothing I can do about that. My electric bill doubled, even though my usage has gone down, and there’s nothing I can do about that. I drive less but pay more in gas. I don’t buy clothes for me so that my family can have clothes. My health is failing, but I have no options but to continue as I have for almost 30 years. And I have no choice there. To own numerous homes and say he understands what the American people are going through doesn’t even make sense.
This is the second time McCain has recently made a comment about wealth that really surprises me. Why does he have the need to make a joking comment about everything, when he know there are people out there in states like Ohio and Michigan that he needs having a really bad time. I don’t get it

Geraldine Ferraro, who campaigned as “the housewife from Queens”,
owned four homes at the time. She recently mentioned on Fox, that her husband was a small-time business man (in response to the vetting process which was new when she ran and now standard procedure).
Many New Yorkers have a home or apartment in NYC, a weekend place in the Hamptons…and perhaps a ski house.
The Clintons (I heard somewhere) did not own a home until after they left the White House and then needed friends to contribute to the purchase and furnishing of their home. Eight years or so after leaving the White House they have a place outside NY, probably an apartment in NYC, a house in DC, a place in Dominican Republic, no doubt one for Chelsea, and the apartment in Arkansas on the grounds of the Presidential Library. Not bad in eight years.
Most of our congressional people seem to have some type of living quarters in DC as well as a home in the State they represent. Except for Wexler who represents Florida and lives in the DC area.
Seems the list might well go on.

COME ON Barack wake up and smell the coffee, and realize that you will NOT win because everyday YOU are LOSING VOTERS. The only thing keeping you ahead in CERTAIN POLLS is the YOUNG people. Most YOUNG people don’t watch much TV about this Election, they just go after a GUY who calls for CHANGE and is good speaker. When they have DEBATES, John Mccain will beat him hands down, just like John did when they had that thing on FOX NEWS at that CHURCH. Barack studdered and couldn’t give a Good answer when he was asked IMPORTANT questions. I can’t wait for the Debates, because I am afraid that Barack Obama will get beat in those DEBATES. By the way, I am a BIG TIME DEMOCRAT, and I plan to vote for John Mccain in November. The reason I plan to vote for John Mccain is that Barack Obama has NO EXPERIENCE, I don’t trust him, and He will RUIN this country by raing MORE taxes and Throwing away MORE money on things that don’t need it. If YOU people out there haven’t watched TV, then YOU haven’t heard the LATEST news. Barack Obama WANTS to TAKE AWAY HALF OF YOUR RETIREMENT MONEY. So ALL YOU PEOPLE who want to retire in a year or two, YOU CAN BYE-BYE to HALF OF YOUR RETIREMENT MONEY IF U VOTE FOR OBAMA. SO, PLEASE VOTE FOR JOHN MCCAIN and THIS COUNTRY WILL BE BETTER OFF WITH HIM. Also, IF BARACK OBMA GETS IN< there WILL BE ANOTHER ATTACK LIKE 9/11. I beleive it will happen if Obama gets to be president. Another THNG is that he wants to MEET withe ENEMIES of this COUNTRY. That is ANOTHER BIG MISTAKE he wil make if he gets in. So, when you go vote in November, please vote John MCCAIN especially YOU IMPORTANT PEOPLE in VIRGINIA, OHIO, and CALIFORNIA. But unfortunately, the people will probably vote for Obama.. If Mccain wins OHIO, Florida, Texas, New York, and most of the southern states, Mccain will win the election. What does number of homes have to do with anything? I can relate to McCain more who has several homes. I as a working man have bought homes as investments and work 6 12 hour+ day a week to keep them. However i did not attend a hate filled racist church for twenty years, nor did I break bread with terrorist and crooks! Obama has about as much in common with me as a Martian. Even though I disagree with McCain on some issues, I do know he loves this country and shares many of the same value and sees this country as blessed and a blessing unlike Obama. Mr McCain you can have as many or as few as life, liberty, pursuit of happiness and your own ambition allow and thats just alright by this working man….
evey american would want to own a house, it is just so happen that mccain has own more than one or two or six. if you compare mccain, and obama may we discuss it this way. obama is only 47 years old now, own a 1.5 million mansion, only few months in the senate running for president. then mccain is 70 years old, came from middle class family, work hard for a living, and so happen to have a wife that is rich. he is 70 years old man, he bought these houses for investments. so what’s wrong with that. what is gonna happen to obama when he is that age. and if he will be in the white house. ask yourself. now, obama has the guts to questions his properties, and he called mccain out of touch. does obama knew that mccain has an adopted child fro a third world country. and now obama called him out of touch. i tought obama you are clever? just asking. now you started it, the republicans will finish it. good riddance!
