RNC: Ridge will not be VP

FNC’s Carl Cameron reports:

As speculation grows around who Sen. McCain will select as his runningmate, Republican National Committee officials told Fox today that the presumptive GOP nominee is no longer considering former Pennsylvania Governor Tom Ridge.

Several sources at the RNC told FOX News that in the last 36 hours, senior McCain advisers and aides have told GOP officials that McCain “got the message” last week that choosing a running mate who supports abortion rights would not be helpful.

McCain initially floated the idea of nominating the pro-choice Ridge to the Weekly Standard last week, arguing his abortion views should not preclude as a runningmate.

The former Keystone State Governor and DHS Secretary also tried to soothe naysayers by telling Fox News Sunday last weekend that, “the vice president is not an independent voice. He echoes the position of the president of the United States.” But it appears uproar from conservative leaders and activists have popped the trial balloon and McCain may be forced to consider a more traditional Republican (e.g. Mitt Romney or Tim Pawlenty).

Though by floating the possibility of a pro-choice VP, it appears McCain has sent a message to independents and women that he intends to maintain his maverick ways in the Oval Office. Additionally, if he ends up choosing a pro-lifer after listening to conservative criticism this past week, McCain shows the right that he is attentive to their concerns. A win-win for McCain going into the convention.

McCain, who has an established reputation as a maverick centrist, is not going to pick a running mate that will antagonize the conservative base of the Republican Party. The suggestions of Lieberman or Bloomberg or Ridge as potential McCain running mates are just public relations outreach to centrist Democrats and Independents.

Of the names being touted in the media, Governors Pawlenty, Romney or Sanford make much more sense as potential McCain running mates. Governors Jindal and Palin are probably too new on the scene to be seriously considered at this time. Ruling out Governor Palin leaves Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas as the only possible woman in the running, but her position on abortion is somewhat murky.

From a purely electoral standpoint, former three-term Michigan Governor John Engler makes the most sense. He would help more than Romney in the toss-up state of Michigan, which polls indicate as being more likely within McCain’s reach than Ridge’s Pennsylvania. Engler is 60 years old, pro-life, Catholic, and currently serves as President and CEO of the National Association of Manufacturers.

I like Tom Ridge but we must win, Obuma is a disaster waiting to happen. Pawlenty is not strong in my mind, Eric Cantor of VA is better, Mitt is probably logical, especially to counteract Obuma’s “economic plan” ha ha. He is also pretty clean (background, not underwear). I would not mind at Mitt for the next few years.

John McCain gets his marching orders from GWB, through Karl Rove. Maverick…yeah right.

I dont understand McCain’s decision making process. He supposely is pro-life, but it doesn’t matter if his closest adviser/possible president is pro-choice …. he says this publicly. But then rules him out because the negative reaction to his inconsistecy.
I think I figured his thought process out!! So if someone, (doesn’t matter who) brings him the most votes ..that who he wants. Other issues are not important. Just what will make his likable to the most amount of people is the goal.

The smartest person needs advisors, people that have differnt perspectives, to help with immensley important decisions. We need a president that wants to help this country , and that is his whole reason for being president. Not just to inflate his ego.

I just see time and time again and underlying phoniness, inethical, egotistical character in this man. I hope to God he is not elected.

We are at such an important crossroads. We need a strong leader, with character. I see that in Obama. I dont agree 100% with him on ever issue … but I have a lot more faith in his intellect, decision making processes, and character than I do in McCain’s.

Please dont just listen to the pundits and their spins!! Think out your choice. Our future depends on it.

I personally do not care who McCain picks for VP. I just went to web site Republicans for Obama, and found people who understand my point. This year I will vote for Obama. I do not trust McCain, he is just another Bush. This country does not need this. Mccain has no experience with economic issues and at the moment we need someone to help us out. We shouls not have gone to a war just to fight, we go to war to protect our country and people. Bush and McCain are pro war. this time around I WILL VOTE WITH REPUBLICANS FOR OBAMA 08!!!!!!

McCain, McCain, McCain………is this what it’s going to be like having you for a president for the next four years? Will we need to constantly be on your back to do the right thing? What kind of a leader is that?

I guess the Republican Party is held hostage by the threats of the Huckabee bigots. In other words, non Protestants need not apply. No Jews, no Catholics and especially no Mormons. Hence, behold, the Protestant presidency.
Mitt Romney has the experience, brains, and ability to work with both sides of the aisle with Reps and Dems to bring our economy out of the doldrums. But noooooooooo, we have to pick someone else.
The blame for this faltering economy, dollar, pensions and 401Ks, of these coming years, will be place directly on the shoulders of the anti-Mormon base of Huckabites.
Romney in 2012.

Romney seems more than ever to be the one that allows McCain pull the upset in November.

Please let it be Romney!!! So many of us are waiting for the ideal ticket– a marriage between foreign policy and economic expertise. We need Romney. Be smart, McCain!

Kathy -
Please tell me what Obama knows about ecomonics? Everything he has peddled as a solution for American would be disasterous to Americans. If you know something he isn’t vocalizing, tell us all!

I disagree. I liked him originally but I think he is a bit of a sleez now that I look at him again.
Whoever McCain chooses needs to be a conservative with a good economic background but not Romney, and because I know you in perticular will start calling me a “huckabeeite” or w/e it was, katkiss, let me point out that I am jewish.

As for republicans for obama, they are all middle of the road republicans who aren’t TRUE republicans in its real definition. They are the equivilant to democrats for mccain, but notice that you don’t see “liberals for mccain” or “conservatives for obama”
It’s the moderates that are crossing party lines, so be sure to make that clear when saying you are voting for obama.

McCain another neocon puppet like Bush cna’t even make his own VP Choice. It is time for change.

I will not vote if Romney is on the ticket. Educate yourselves on the Mormon religion…they are NOT Christians, but a cult. Only a moron could follow these beliefs.

Romney never holds to a position, and CANNOT be trusted.

Just because someone is good with money does not mean he has the qualifications needed.

We need a well rounded package…and Romney is definitely NOT it!

I don’t know who is, but not him.

Comment by Michael from Atlanta

Mitt Romney is the John Kerry of the Republican party. He has flip flopped on more issues that John McCain.

The endorsement of Romney by conservatives makes me laugh. They want to make out like Romney is a long time conservative. Truth be Known, Romney is no more a conservative than McCain is.

They both cave to the conservatives because they think they can get their votes. But neither have a history of voting in the interst of conservative values.

Comment by Michael from Atlanta

Romney was for abortion before he was against it.

What McCain’s problem is with a VP choice, I believe, is findng someone who may want to run in 2012? Who do we want as republicans, not whinney Huckabee who has turned into a two legged walking manure pile with his face everywhere. I think evangelicals are sick of him too.

Is Sen. McCain Rush Limbaugh’s pearls of wisdom by not selection Ridge for his VP. Maybe he runs the RNC

Comment by Dr. RosenRosen

Ridge would be the Dan Quayle of 2008 if he were McCain’s VP. Stupid is as stupid does.

Come on - McCain/Romney in ‘08! Let’s make this an exciting ticket! YES!!!

I would put my money on Guiliani……

He defended McCain during and after the debates. Shows big in Florida, NewYork, and California.
Helps McCain in ways that Romney,Huckabee and Ridge cannot.

Comment by Charles

Mike Huckabee is the man for the job! Thank heavens McCain came to his senses and decided not to choose Ridge. However, choosing Pawlenty, Porter, Palin, Chris will have the same affect of a let down feeling among conservatives. We want a name we recognize. Mike Huckabee brings blue collar, social conservatives, and the South. Mitt Romney should defintely be given an appointment in McCain’s cabinet but not VP.

If and when Mike Huckabee is chosen, McCain will get my vote, my money and my time as a volunteer. Wake up McCain - Rasmussen national poll showed Mike Huckabee was the favorite. Romney came in third.

Comment by CGB in Delaware

Getting back to Ridge, it’s too bad because Ridge has much going for him. If I were his advisor I’d suggest he make the following argument,

“I wish we never aborted another child, but there are reasons why abortions in the first trimester are needed. However, I strongly oppose late term abortions. I also strongly oppose judges making law. The original Roe v. Wade decision was a terrible one. It needs to be overturned. I pledge to support judicial nominees who will uphold the constitution, not make law. The people, through the various states, need to decide this issue. And I will abide the people’s decision.”

This way he doesn’t flip-flop, but might persuade a conservatives that he isn’t so bad. At the same time, he might attract some moderates. If he could get past this, he’d make an excellent choice.
