Obama Describes his Ideal VP

Barack Obama let slip a small detail about his yet-to-be-named running mate at his Raleigh town hall today when he referred to the veep as a “he.”

The candidate and his staff have not given any hints as to who he will name - or even who he is considering and the timing of the announcement, which many believe will occur in the coming days. So when Obama said “he” instead of the less revealing “he or she,” eyebrows rose in the press file as reporters wondered what that comment meant for Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius and former rival Senator Hillary Clinton’s chances to fill the bottom of the ticket.

“By the way, my VP also will be a member of the Executive Branch — he won’t be one of these 4th branches of government where he thinks he’s above the law,” Obama said after saying he would not hand over policy to the veep.

The tight-lipped campaign wouldn’t confirm or deny that Obama’s choice is male.

See if you think one of the top three contenders - Joe Biden, Evan Bayh, or Tim Kaine - fits the bill.

I want somebody who has integrity, who’s in politics for the right reasons, I want somebody who is independent. Somebody who is able to say to me, ‘You know what, Mr. President, I think you’re wrong on this and here’s why,’ and who will help me think through major issues and consult with me, would be a key advisor. I want somebody who is capable of being president and who I would trust to be president. That’s the first criteria for VP.  And the final thing is, I want a president (SIC) who shares with me a passion to make the lives of the American people better than they are right now.  I want someone who is not in it just because they want to have their name up in lights or end up being president. I want somebody who is mad right now that people are losing their jobs. And is mad right now that people have seen their incomes decline, and wants to rebuild the middle class in this country. That’s the kind of person that I want; somebody who in their gut knows where they came from and believes that we have to grow this country from the bottom up.

Will the Democrats in Congress have the USA buying oil from Russia?

Comment by Raymond Hudgins, Jr.

His ideals of what a Prsident’s job is are misconstrued. The President is not involved in domestic affairs and was never meant to. I would advise Mr. Obama to go back to his High School civics course and learn what a president actually has the power to do, and what they don’t.

Interesting that Obama’s qualifications for VP concentrate on helping US citizens to get through their current economic woes: protecting middle class citizens who are suffering from inflation plus the loss of homes and jobs. But expertize in foreign policy, health issues, protecting the environment, and security are not mentionned.

Obama forgot to add EXPERIENCE, as Obama has none. As he said in 1996, he” will NOT run in 2008″ as he “does NOT have the experience.” It may be one of the only truthful comments from him to date.

Who knows. To be honest I rarely use “he or she”, I find it unnecessary to do that. Anyway, I believe he is picking a male and I don’t see that it would be a problem. I also believe McCain will pick a male. I’m a bit surprised his choice hasn’t been made yet since he was the presumptive nominee long before Obama.

Hmmm that new Obomanation book is a number one best seller so we’ll see how many more copies are sold to tell the people about this pretender. If the democrats have been in charge of the senate for the last two years….what have they done except help to bankrupt the country? Two years ago we were just fine.

I really couldn’t care if Obama selected a monkey for his vice president; let’s just focus on cycling out the most selfish and indulged generation in history out of political power. I can only hope that history gives the boomers their just deserts once social security collapses and we really get to take a good strong look at what our parents and grandparents have really done for us and this country because they didn’t want to pay a -little- more taxes.

Obama/Bubbles 08!

Comment by Susan

Obama has more experience then both Ronald Reagan, and Eisenhower had before they were elected. If Reagan and Eisenhower had enough experience then Obama sure does considering the fact that he has more then them.

Response to “Craig”
The housing market falling apart and the financial crises started before the 2006 election. Wages were pretty much stagnant before 2006. So how about you check your facts before you spew total nonsense.

Obama doesn’t really need a economic expert as VP because compared to McCain Obama’s economic policies triumph. NAFTA for example, McCain is content with keeping the status quo, while Obama will renegotiate NAFTA in order to make the conditions more beneficial for America. McCain won’t even try to help our economy… Maybe because McCain says the economy is perfectly fine, that we are better off then 8 years ago and that we are all just whiners. I’ll tell you something McCain you were the one whining and being childish about Obama’s popularity, not Americans.
Then Obama’s health care plan actually improves health care unlike the McCain-Bush plan that just increases prices, taxes and decreases quality. Obama unlike Bush and McCain isn’t bought by Drug special interests; Obama will fight to negotiate Medicare Drug costs saving us 30 Billion a year. Obama’s plan also moves us to electronic record keeping saving us around 70 Billion a year. All the Bush-McCain plan does is remove more efficient cheaper group health plans in order to remove the non tax on it.

I think Obama having someone who is strong on the economic would highlight his qualities rather well. Obama’s economic policies are great; removing taxes for small business that account for the majority of employment and economic growth, increase business incubators which are proven ways to expand small business and economic growth. Obama’s tax simplification plan would be amazing it would save the government 10 Billion a year and save tax payers millions in man hours. McCain has no such plan and just wants to waste your billions of dollars and all your hours. Obama would cut taxes for companines not shipping jobs over seas, and for the Middle Class, while McCain will give hundreds of Billions to companines sending your jobs to China.

To Everett:

“Baby boomer” is a term used to describe a person who was born during the Post-World War II baby boom between 1946 and the early 1960s.

Obama was born in 1961. So, like George W. B. and Bill C., Barack O. is a boomer.

Advice to those who say the Senate was responsible for the recession: track the news well and learn economics. You don’t know what you’re talking about.

Comment by ckuhn

FoxNews, your forgot to add what Obama Really said…be fair and balance
Obama went on to describe what he was NOT looking for in a running mate, painting a stark contrast with Cheney, who spearheaded President George W. Bush’s energy task force, influences White House foreign policy, including the Iraq war, and has claimed to be a member of the legislative branch because of his tie-breaking role in the U.S. Senate.

“I won’t hand over my energy policy to my vice president,” Obama said. “I won’t have my vice president engineering my foreign policy for me.”

Moving on to the qualities he did want, Obama said, “I want somebody who has integrity, who’s in politics for the right reasons. I want somebody who is … independent, somebody who is able to say to me, ‘You know what, Mr. President? I think you’re wrong on this and here’s why.’”

Comment by William

Biden is a foreign policy man. Although he may fit Obi’s criteria, it would be strange for him not to allude to this man’s primary strength. Both Bayh and Kaine appeal to his alleged desire for an independent thinker: Kaine’s social views are vastly different from those of Barrack Obama, and Bayh was an important supporter of HRC. However, Obi did not mention what I believe to be Kaine’s primary strength as a potential VP: Kaine has stated repeatedly that he would be reluctant to leave his job as governor of Virginia, and this kind of loyalty would make Kaine very desirable as a potential running mate. In spite of some of Kaine’s attractive qualities, I consider Bayh a strong contender, largely due to his apparently proactive support of rebuilding the middle-class.

Comment by Marirose

It will be Biden for sure! He’s mad as hell, articulate, cares deeply and passionately about so many issues, is incredibly intelligent and well-spoken, and won’t hold back if he disagrees with Barack. It’s our time and it’s Joe’s time too! Anyone else would be a disappointment to me, I have to say.

Still, I trust my guy and he’s got my vote. Barack is the total package; what he doesn’t know, he has the forethought and wisdom to gather together the smartest, most experienced people to assist and support him in his leadership role and policy-building. Yes, we are the people we’ve been waiting for and it’s all coming together quite nicely. I am so proud to be part of this period in history.

As for experience, remember Barack’s quote of MLK. Unlike Hillary who waited out a run when she should not have in 2004 (to save us from a second term of Bush and all his demented ignorance), Barack is running now b/c of what MLK called, “The fierce urgency of now!” I totally admire him for knowing that we need strong leadership and someone who will listen to the people so that the govt is for the people, by the people, and of the people. Barack knows we need leadership now, that we can’t wait. He’s ignited a movement that is greater than all of us and we are finally going to get on the right track, save our country, but more importantly save our planet.

Let’s get to work folks!

Comment by Marirose

Good lord, Suzy! The only reason the Corsi “Unfit for Publication” (as Obama’s rebuttal booklet calls it) book is on the bestseller list is b/c right wing groups are buying it up in bulk. This has been proven. If you look at the NYTimes Bestseller list, you’ll see a check mark or little flag beside the book (can’t recall right now -sorry), that identifies it as a book that is being bought up in bulk, not by individuals. It’s chock full of lies and half truths and Obama has rebutted in a 40+ page booklet. Do you only watch Fox?? Oh, how sad.

Obama is the best thing to come along to change the direction our country is going in and create working, enduring, and peaceful relationships with other countries. No it won’t be easy, not if we all decide to believe the lies about him and vote in McCain, an old, ignorant, desperate man who is being led by the likes of Karl Rove and others. Enough already. Go to msnbc.com and catch some of Countdown with Keith Olbermann. Educate yourself, I beg you!

Two years ago we were just fine? Hmmm, why do you suppose the republican mascot is an elephant, you know, that creature that is supposed to have a long memory?

Just as a reminder:

By the end of bush’s first term discretionary spending rose a whopping 48.5 percent. While there was a net job loss in the U.S. with numbers in the millions making him the only commander-in-chief since Depression-era President Herbert Hoover to earn such a distinction. Indeed by then the economy had been hemorrhaging an average of 93,000 jobs monthly between March 2001 and March 2003

By 2003 Inflation-adjusted median household income had been flat while the nation’s poverty rate increased.

By 2004, under the Bush Administration, real GDP had grown at an average annual rate of 2.5 percent, considerably below the average for business cycles from 1949 to 2000.

On January 15th 2004, the Outstanding Public Debt jumped $13 billion to $7,001,852,607,623.35. This was the first time in history the U.S. National Debt surpassed the $7 trillion mark and came less than two years after the Debt first passed $6 trillion.

The national debt was raised in May 2003 by a record $984 billion. Since Bush entered office in January 2001, the debt limit has been increased by more than $1.4 trillion.

Not to mention we were, and are still throwing billions away every month in an entirely unnecessary military occupation in Iraq. And folks, this is just the tip of the iceberg that has been threatening to sink us ever since.

He wants someone who is mad at what America is today? He is going to have a hard time finding that person within the Washington circle or his own circle of associates. It is a heyday for the politician - either side. No one is in touch with what the average American faces.

Obama has no solutions. What is he going to do to increase jobs? What is he going to do to control the cost of fuel, which in turn will control the cost of foods and products? What is he going to do about the chain the middle east has around our necks in regard to oil? $1000 tax credit coming from the profits of the wealthy who provide jobs to the poor and the middle class is so far off base - it’s not going to do a thing to ease the burden of high oil prices - and it will almost immediately increase unemployment because it will decrease the profits of those who can employ people. Windfall Profits Tax = a disaster. Corporations don’t pay taxes, people do. If the price of producing oil goes up, we pay more at the pump.

Obama needs to select someone who can explain economic, foreign affairs, the true blight of the middle class family to him so he understands.

Comment by Mariann Pepitone

Obama could be saying “he” to throw the people off track. Biden with his big mouth would be the wrong choice. Bayh, Kathleen, Kaine, Nunn, Richardson, Kerry would not make the best VP’s because the don’t have the know how to be one. They should stay in the position they have now. I only hope it isn’t Kerry, Biden or Kathleen because he is sure to lose the election. Hillary is the best choice no matter what comment’s are made about her. She has more experience than all of them and can be ready to take over if he becomes ill or something else happens. Hillary is more qualified than Obama himself who lacks everything in the political field. He never won a debate and lost the forum interview. He hesitates too much and can’t answer quick. On the platform he does fine because he practiced from the speeches of JFK, RFK and MLK. He used many of their words and just added a few of his own. For a Harvard graduate he certainly has the public fooled.

Comment by J.Hicks

It is amazing to me that there are so many ‘criteria’ for a good VP choice and non of them seem to consider the most important one. That the VP is but one tragedy away from being the president. Seems like this should take precedent over who can help a candidate win a particular state, or appeal to a specific demographic. He She Color Governor Senator age etc,who cares. What matters is can this person be an effective president. Lets re-think our priorities people.

The previous people who mentioned that the economy has become worse the past two years seem to be on to something. If you remember gas was expensive two years ago, but it was not nearly as high as it is now. I also was not hearing how bad the economy was every single day. I think a large part of it is the media’s desire to paint Bush and the Republicans as the worst people ever so their Democrats can get back in office.

Who cares about experience at this point? Bush and his White House had all the experience in the world and no Republican can honestly say that they did a good job. We are not safer (Bush has almost reached the 7-year mark that Clinton had of not being attacked by terrorists), our economy is a mess, the deficit is beyond belief. My kid was born $30K in debt and that is because of the irresponsible spending (taxing?) on this war. We need someone with vision, good judgment, intelligence, and that the rest of the world will respect. Obama fits that criteria as President, and whomever he picks as a running mate will just fall into the ticket and carry on. I personally hope for Wes Clark, but expect Biden.

Taxes, taxes and more taxes. Congressional Dems don’t have a clue on fixing the economy. They only know that taxes keep their “nests well feathered”.

Dem motto: If it moves, tax it; if it keeps moving, regulate it; if it stops, subsidize it.

If Obama (should say his puppeteers) buys this election, Obama supporters should find some place of seclusion because there will be patriots seeking restitution for the subsequent collapse of this nation.

When the Media and people talk about the VP position they just mention who they would like, who their favorite would be.

You have to look at Obama. Who his favorite might me, not yours, not the medias.

Obama has a long history of working beside and along with Republicans. Hillary doesn’t have that. Biden doesn’t have that. Bayh doesn’t have that. Kaine doesn’t have that.

Obama has a long history of winning over Democrats, Republicans, and Indepdendents. That rules out Hillary, Biden, Bayh, and Kaine because only democrats like them.

Obama wants a leader. Hillary is just a fighter. Kaine only has 3 years as a leader, and it’s not impressive at all. Biden has been in politics forever, but is only part of the crowd. Bayh has been a governor and Senator, but he’s just in it for the fame.

What Obama describes, and what Obama is… is most like: Texas Representative Chet Edwards, and Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebilius.

Just like Obama, Chet Edwards and Kathleen Sebelius have won their positions in heavily Republican states. Just like Obama they have got support from both partys and independents. Kathleen was voted as one of the Top 5 Governors in the country, powerful leader. Chet has been recognized and praised by the Military for his creation of the New GI Bill. Obama praised that Bill created by Chet. Kathleen reduced Abortion in her state, and it’s the exact same plan that Obama is talking about. Chet and Kathleen are exactly identical to Obama on the issues. His plans are there plans. When Obama talks about Change, it’s the same type of Change that has been created by Chet Edwards and Kathleen Sebelius.

Biden is outdated, stale, and old politics. Kaine is new but not impressive. Bayh is a clone of Hillary, and only in it for the fame.

It’s going to come down to:
Barrack Obama - Chet Edwards
Barack Obama - Kathleen Sebelius

Umm, no Suzy and Craig, two years ago the US WASN’T “just fine” as you put it. You guys should take your own advise and “check the facts.” But since I know you’re not going to check them, here’s the plain truth: our government was running record deficits well before the 2006 elections, and that doesn’t even take into account the deficits we are running on Iraq, which is considered emergency supplemental spending and is going on our nation’s credit card. Like it or not, the seeds were planted well before the Dems gained control.
And I find it funny that the people who claim the Dem’s are “bankrupting the country” are the same people who claim that the Dem’s have failed to do anything while in control (as if the Republicans record-shattering number of cloture votes had nothing to do with this). Look it up.

Back in May, Dr. Tantillo (’the marketing doctor’), who has (a blog on branding) did a post arguing against the idea of an Obama-Clinton ticket–positing that from a branding perspective, it makes no sense, and actually wouldn’t be a good move for Clinton’s brand, either.

“Because of the length of this primary fight, brand identity and loyalty to brand have become central. What this means is that a kind of brand mutual exclusivity has set in.”

Not sure if I agree or if this idea still holds at this point, but it is a compelling argument - (and one that I at least think goes a long way toward explaining Obama’s hesitation to choose Clinton as his running mate–even if it would go a long way toward building party unity and seemingly clench the general election for Obama.)
