A tale of two candidates: McCain vs. Obama on “evil”
LAKE FOREST, CA — Tonight’s “Civil Forum” at Rick Warren’s Saddleback Church was an illustrative example of contrasts: Barack Obama approached questions intellectually while John McCain went with his gut.
One question exemplified the tale of two candidates, and potentially could have been a commander in chief moment if both candidates had been on stage–how the candidates would deal with “evil” during their respective presidencies.
“Should we ignore it, negotiate with it, contain it or defeat it?” the pastor asked.
“Defeat it,” McCain said without flinching.
“If I have to follow him to the gates of hell, I will get Osama bin Laden and bring him to justice. I will do that and I know how to do that. I will get that done,” McCain added decisively, quickly turning the topic to the war on terror–his strength. “No one should be allowed to take thousands of American, innocent American lives. Of course evil must be defeated…we are facing the transcendent challenge of the 21st century–radical Islamic extremists.”
McCain went on to cite al-Qaeda’s use of a mentally disabled suicide bomber last year as an example of “pure evil” and kept the focus on foreign evil.
For his part, Obama, who often answers questions in a way that allows you to get a glimpse into his thought process, acknowledged the premise before responding to the query.
“Evil does exist,” Obama began acknowledging the premise of the question as he ticked off the evils of genocide in Darfur, inner-city crime and child abuse. “I think it has to be confronted. It has to be confronted squarely and one of the things that I strongly believe is that, you know, we are not going to, as individuals erase evil from the world. That is God’s task. but we can be soldiers in that process and we can confront it when we see it.”
Obama then diverted a bit and focused in on the importance of showing “humility” so the U.S. does not perpetrate its own evils.
“The one thing that I think is very important is for us to have some humility in how we approach the issue of confronting evil, but you know a lot of evil has been perpetrated based on the claim that we were trying to confront evil,” Obama added. “Just because we think our intentions are good doesn’t always mean that we’re going to be doing good.”
It makes one consider if this question could have marked an important moment if both men had been on stage and Obama had given the first response. Obama’s answer can be interpreted as a bit halting and while he did use the word “confront,” he turned the question around on potential U.S. evils. Meanwhile, McCain made the question about the foreign enemy and used aggressive, decisive language in his response
It bears a similarity in fact to the first Democratic debate back in April 2007 when the candidates were asked how they would deal with an al Qaeda attack on two American cities.
Obama said the first thing he would do is make sure the U.S. had an “effective emergency response,” while Hillary Clinton said she would “retaliate.” She was lauded by pundits as passing the commander-in-chief test while he was given an incomplete and reinforced questions about his readiness for the Oval Office.
Yes, this is a complete hypothetical but it does make you wonder…

I had gotten an email this morning from some conservatives that still are not ready to embrace McCain, they are circulating a petition to get Huckabee to leave the GOP and start a new party. Sounds Crazy Doesnt It. Could you imagine how bad the GOP would be hurt if the base left the party>?
http://www.mccanes.com/newparty.html
Using the enteric nervous system for making executive decisions has not proved productive over the past 8 years. Not sure if I want another President who “thinks from the gut”
When asked how he would confront evil, I was surprised that John McCain did not reply “nuke-em”
THERE IS THE HEART OF THE MATTER!
While McCain offered weak bumper sticker slogans, playing it up for the crowd, Obama was honest and reflective. McCain spouted pre-packaged bits of his stump speech (Drill now! War now! POW last century! Nothing since! etc. etc.). Obama thought about what he was saying, and most importantly offered reasons for his views. Obama sounded articulate and thoughtful. McCain, sounded practiced and ultimately insincere, especially when it came to his pandering to the religious. (”I’ve been saved,” (by an heiress?) “I’ve been forgiven,” (lucky you!) I want to “inspire” the poor (gee helpful!), I want everyone to be rich (marry big $$, like you, John!), etc. etc.)
McCain is scary! He has a “hair trigger.” Give me a leader not a politician. Obama showed leadership, McCain showed us his expertise at pandering! We need a man who is contemplative, humble, compassionate and a bridge builder and that is Obama!
[...] McCain Saturday: ‘If I have to follow him to the gates of hell, I will get Osama bin Laden and bring him to justice.’ [...]
It was hard to determine what Obama was thinking, between each umm and auh he said a few words. It seemed that he was searching for the “Politically Correct” thing to say, not what was actually on his mind. — He said what he thought you wanted to hear, not what he actually felt.
So I guess the only evil this country faces is from external sources?
Wasn’t Tim McVeigh evil?
Wasn’t he American?
I guess it is unpatriotic to suggest the evil that people see on a daily basis
in our own country is worthy of attention or mention.
Are we not supposed to see gang violence as evil?
Child kidnappers, and predators as evil?
I cannot believe you give more credence or celebrate McCain’s answer because
he ignored or didn’t articulate that evil exists here in the United States.
This is the same delusion that gives us neo-cons who see the world as they choose to see it,
not as it exists. Certainly not as it exists for citizens who see random violence as evil and see that evil every night on the local news.
McCain did not go with his gut! This man has so much knowedge and experience he makes Obama look like a 3rd grader. Mcain for president. Will be nice to have a president that smarter than us all.
I do not fully agree.
It is always easy to say “retaliate” or “defeat it”. But a Commander in Chief has to acknowledge that things are not that easy in reality.
How is McCain going to catch Osama? Is he going out himself? Will the CIA suddenly find him when McCain is president? I rather see this as political pandering - not as a proof of being ready for president.
Man, Just play to the crowds emotions and win the election. For all the dumb who vote for McCain it is their moment of Glory
I feel Sen. McCain is right dealing w/ these evil terrorist as well making sure we are equipped w/ emergency responses.
Sen.Obama is not so sure how he is going to handle this.It seems he is so inexperience dealing w/ terrorist.
If Fox as it claims give us the facts & lets us decide how can their reporter “of facts” Mosheh Oinounou even write about hypothetical’s (his word not mine)? Once again the hypocrisy of Fox shows it’s true colors.
“It would also reinforce questions about the first term Senator’s readiness for the Oval Office.”
Why? Are you suggesting that its impossible to engage in evil while thinking that you’re being righteous? Does the phrase “plank in you own eye” mean nothing? It seems to me that the inability to engage in self-reflection is the WORST quality for a CIC. Look at how it’s worked out so far.
It’s unsurprising that you may think otherwise, but that’s yet another sign of weakness and incapability of self-reflection.
If I wasen’t a McCain supporter I sure would be after watching the two answer questions, and I did like the design of the forum. After McCain answered a questions I knew exactely where he stood on an issue. After Obama’s answers as usual I’m not for sure. I’m not sure that he would be tough enough on terrorism to protect our country. I think that the evil people want Obama to win because they would be able to gain ground against the USA…which is a country that I am very proud of, yes we may make mistakes but we are still the best country in the world.
I think it’s fair to say that McCain gave the simple-minded Bush answer, while Obama gave the more nuanced Kerry answer. The question is whether we have grown up enough and smartened up enough to see that the Bush/McCain answer may be more comforting at first glance, but belies a dangerous way of approaching the world that only makes us less safe. Obviously, this reporter and most pundits are still stuck on stupid, but I think many Americans have moved beyond this level of thinking.
I think the average American may have seen the candidates’ answers somewhat differently than what the media is describing. And, the average American is not in the tank. This is especially true of the question on evil. I don’t see McCain’s response as quick or not well thought out. I see it as an issue he has given a great deal of thought to and has formulated a focused and specific response. He didn’t have to give it thought while answering the question because he had already done that. Secondly, his response was not evasive and he was not afraid to answer the question directly out of fear he may offend someone. He told the truth. He saw the greatest evil as the terrorist threat, which it is. Obama hardly mentioned this threat. While there is evil in our streets, it is hardly what one would expect to be the primary focus of someone running for president of the United States. As a person, I like Obama. He has a great ability to communicate and he comes across as a very easy person to like. I think he loves America and I do not buy into the attempts to question his loyalty to the United States. I only question his readiness to deal the the issues that face us. In a different time, maybe…
Dave
These were two really profound questions; does evil exist and if it does how to respond? Unfortunately I thought the profundity of the questions was above the limitations set by the forum which called for relatively short and quick answers. It struck me that neither candidate acknowledged evil within themselves or the struggle between good and evil that goes on within each of us. And the list of possible answers that Rick Warren posed excluded what I would consider the best answer, and that is evil exists and must be recognized and overcome by good. That is really more in keeping with Judeo-Christian understanding. The sermon on the Mount warns against resisting evil. When we resist or fight evil we add to its strength. Rather look toward the Goodness of God and let God’s goodness overcome. MLK understood that. Few leaders today seem to remember. But overall I would give McCain the one up on his answer as he at least acknowledged that evil on a big scale is staring us down the throat. We cannot afford to ignore it.
It is obvious that Obama is a Appeaser with his answwer to evil. I still have not figured out how one deals with EVIL with humility????
We cannot have Obama as President. who fails to understand the real threat that exist by Radical extremist Jihadist Islamic terorist. Imagine, god forbids , America get hitby another 9/11 and we have Obama as President, who will deal with them with HUMILITY. Maybe, Obama will blame the US for past sins ( HUMILITY) and ask these terrorist for forgiveness.
By the way, McCain was the winner last night by a landslide. Obama looked weak and was struggling to answer.
McCain 08
Ifear that Obama will win and he will be the beginning of the end of America as a leading
power in the world. Thank God i am old, but I pray for our children.>
To whom it may concern: Greetings.
On the subject of good and evil SEN Obama never answered the second half of the question. If evil does exist what should we do about it? the answers being ignore it defeat it etc… He ultimately said we should confront it when we see it. Which is actually is the precept of the question. Once again he talked allot without going on record as having said any thing.
Best regards.
Bob in El Paso TX
I like a man that is decisive not one that dances around the subject. I might also add I like a patriot who respects the flag and the country. not one who turns his back on our flag and expects us to elect him. Obama is a phony and I pray to God the people can see that before election.
Obama never really answers the questions - again, he makes speeches in response to citing his opinions on specific issues. Just looking at him during his “responses” one can see his hesitancy, carefully selecting his words - translation - again we are left in the dark as to what his views really are. He is so careful not to put his foot in his mouth. That very indecisiveness is ample reason why this man is NOT PRESIDENTIAL MATERIAL!! We cannot have someone with that weakness to be in a position of authority i.e. running this country. While he hesitates during a critical situation, i.e. the Russian invasion of Georgia, they proceed beyond any form of negotiations. “While Nero fiddles, Rome burns”.
I cannot imagine the DNC; the media; Pelosi, Dean - not to mention all the idiots (voters) that buy into this individual’s rhetoric pushing for him to be Commander in Chief. He has shown time and time again his lack of experience and what I saw last night was his usual hesitancy (interspersed with the overuse of “you knows”) and what amounts to the impression that he himself does not believe in what he’s saying. He is NOT comfortable in this give and take arena and we will see much more of this during the upcoming three debates. He has avoided that venue for some time now and finally opted for the church location where basically was another opportunity to speechify instead be taken on in an actual debate situation. He is not a “think on your feet” person and comes across as unsure and opting more for “safe” repsonses.
He will get the black vote no matter what his views are on any issues and that is so wrong because it is a vote on race which has consistantly made this election about race and NOT qualifications and experience. Trust for Obama or any other candidate is a huge factor for me when I make that decision on who is best qualified for the office of the President. I do not feel that for Obama - I am a Democrat but must go with my gut on who I trust the most to run this country - it is NOT Obama and so after many election years I will change my party.
No Hillary - no democratic vote!
By saying that this question raises problems for Obama, you assume that a broader understanding of evil is a bad thing, and that a commander in chief should “see no evil” in his own country. You also assume that the only job of a commander in chief is to attack, and in this you have made a terrible folly: the most important job of a commander in chief is to decide WHEN to attack. When is it worth the cost? What innocent lives will be ended as a result of military action? Can the terrors of war possibly be avoided this time?
Also, McCain’s immediate response about Osama Bin Laden reveals that he does not think deeply about the meaning of the question. In order to know the appropriate response to evil, you first must understand what constitutes evil. Any meaningful reflection on this point would find that fundamentalist Islam is not the only source of evil in this world. In fact, that “good vs. evil” approach to fundamentalist Islam is what got us into the Iraq War in the first place, despite the fact that they did not attack us, were not going to attack us, and had no weapons of mass destruction.
Obama as commander-in-chief??? God help us!!!
Hurrah to John McCain! Job well done! He has proven through this forum that he is decisive, a man of conviction, and well able to think on his feet. I would feel very comfortable with him as the leader of our nation. John McCain made convincing points last night and I believe he far exceeded Obama in his answers and thought process. While I have been a supporter of John McCain previously, I was not very enthusiastic. I am now backing him 100%.
Obama’s response was a much broader view of evil. McCains view is all about the enemies of the US. It was clear the Obama is the thinker of the two.
Yes Obama does stand out as taking more time and being thoughtful when answering questions others looking to be President answer in one or two words. Maybe if George Bush had put a little more time and thought into how to bring Bin Laden to justice we would be done with it by now. Instead he has spent almost his whole presidency, eight years, and untold sums of money to accomplish nothing more than leaving the problem to the next president. Unfortunately we as an electorate don’t give any more thought to who we elect president than they do when they act as our President.
Obama can unite the world so that USA will be stronger and more safe place to live and work. You need good friends and allies in these hard times.
McCain was well prepared and able to answer questions confidently. Obama wasn’t confident, paused and studdered showing that he or his party is not prepared for the issues that will come once in the White House. Count the pauses, delays, umss, ohs, etc in each speach, messure the level of confidence each canidate portrayed answering questions and you will find McCain performed better in the Faith Forum. Solutions to questions aside, McCain is prepared to be a president.
I just read the MSNBC report on last night, The evil question was in the story?
…Yes it does make me wonder that McCain is intent on starting wars with everyone. It also makes me wonder who you are voting for and how it is showing in your writing.
This reporter like many others just doesn’t seem to get it. Obama didn’t speak philosophically he skirted the issues- every issue. When asked “when does life begin” he said it was above his pay grade. Well it is not above the President of the United States of America’s pay grade. A leader leads. Every “hot button” issue was skirted- and anyone that thinks a leader can skirt an issue when an ICBM is coming in on Washington DC or any other American city- has no idea what a leader is. We are the only nation in history that came to the aid of and insured the freedom of every nation in the world. France, England, Poland, you name em’ we freed them. Anyone that wants to be President of the United States of America and doesn’t realize that this is the greatest nation that ever existed- doesn’t have a clue- and has no business seeking that great and honorable office. Thank you.
As per the last line of the article, it makes me wonder if McCain has learned from the stupidity and oversimplification of life promoted by Bush. It makes me wonder how good a presidency Obama will have. Not whether it will be good…HOW good.
Obama’s ah, but, but, ah, my wife, my grandma ah but but. Lost him the debate in my opinion.
The Civil Forum last evening was, without a doubt, the most insightful inquiry into the two Presidential candidates…ever!
Senator Obama’s wandering, ‘intellectual’ (perhaps this, but then again, perhaps that’) responses were in sharp contrast to Senator McCain’s immediate, concise and clear responses.
I was especially struck by Senator Obama’s defense of abortion contrasted with his moral quandary regarding the use of embryos for research.
He had no problem defending abortion but was concerned about embryonic usage.
There could not have been a more stark contrast between the two Presidential contenders on every topic.
I wish every American could see this BEFORE they vote in November!

PS: I hope FOXNEWS plans on making available a complete stream of the entire two hours!
McCain looked rehearsed. He easily looked fake. He reminded me of myself on a job interview. I made up stories knowing there were no way to verify them. John McCain gave answers any typical candidate would. Barack Obama went in a different direction. A direction that this country needs to go. I feel John McCain is a new shovel digging the same hole for America’s continuing economic collapse.
Well look at Obama’s associations and you’d see that he despises this country while McCain is proud to be an American.

A wise man once said “true happiness is when we are able to say ‘I am happy. PERIOD.’ If we say ‘I am happy BECAUSE my dog is beautiful,’ then that happiness can be taken away.” In other words, our happiness should depend more on ourselves and less on others.
This is not to say we shouldn’t carry a stick and use it. We must as there are evil elements out there that don’t listen to reason. But what do others think of us? Do they think we are evil? Do they think we don’t listen to reason? If our patriotism prevents us from asking these hard questions, then we are not being honest.
What has this to do with Obama and McCain? Obama’s long thoughtful answers, IMHO, seek long lasting solutions and are based on the premise that we are a part of the problem as well as the solution. In contrast, McCain’s quick short answers, also IMHO, seek short-term solutions and are based on the premise that we have little to do with the problem and the solution lies elsewhere. One of them is more balanced and the other seems to not learn from experience.
Its was very obvious to anyone who was watching that McCain was at ease and Obama struggled big time. He stuttered so much I felt sorry for him! McCain is definitely the winner last night!
I worried that McCain would struggle and Obama would look smooth but as you could tell Obama supporters need to re-think their position as he looked quite inexperience and very uneasy!
Pleare read this http//mediacrashers.blogspot.com2008/08politics-mccain-unfit-to-lead.html
I have just posted a comment but it still says no comments yet.
MCCAIN APPEARED TO BE ON “PEP PILLS” … HE ANSWERED QUESTIONS BEFORE THEY WERE PRESSENTED AS THOUGH HE KNEW WHAT THE QUESTION WOULD BE AND HAD PREPARED ANSWER AHEAD OF TIME…

Ahhh, I see, so you think that words like “defeat” and “retaliate” and “obliterate” and “bomb, bomb, bomb…” provide a verbal litmus test of one’s readiness to be commander in chief?
What a crock.
They are only useful to someone trying out for the lead role in a “Rambo” or “Terminator” movie.
We’ve had ENOUGH of conservative, flag-waving, cowboy diplomacy!
How can evangelicals support Mc Cain and crusify Edwards & Clinton?
What sort of hypocrissy is this,or has he been forgiven for leaving a wife and his three kids because he is a republican?
McCain used the same old political tatics of past years. He told too many stories to avoid answering questions.
The decisions that a president make aren’t trivial and shouldn’t be made without thought and analysis. Why do you think that McCain’s inclination to leap to conclusions without analyzing the facts makes him *more* ready for the oval office? I find Obama’s careful weighing of the pro’s and con’s very reassuring.
Mr Mosheh Oinounou
It seems to me that you didn’t report just what was said by each candidate in answer to the question of “evil” by Pastor Warren and let your readers form their own opinion of what the perceived, but you added your own two cents to sway the reader to your own way of thinking!
I did not get to see the debate and I would like to hear the questions and answers exactly the way they happened without your or anyone elses’s
one sided opinions!
ChrisA
from that point of view, i concluded that mccain was really good for america. mccain has got wisdom, courage, and love for america. it was a very perfect set up for the one who will lead america. we need someone who is decisive in war, and economic times.
Obama is not ready and does not have the experience to make the judgement calls as POTUS. He really has a very low level dislike for this country…so subtle, you almost miss it. He and his wife shouldn’t have sat in that church for 20 years and listened to those hateful sermons.
McCain ‘08!
This Civil Forum was a wonderful way to get to know more about the candidates. John McCain blew Candidate Obama out of the water. No doubt in my mind who I will cast my vote for in November. It’s a “no brainer”
I would be happy to respond if I had seen the interviews. I would like to know if this will re-reun for the public and if so, when?
I just can’t believe how immature a lot of the Obama suporters are! I was just reading responses at the other news blogs (CNN), and rather than just admit McCain did a great job, while Obama once again sqirmed in his seat, and beet around the bush, went off topic, then by the time he was done, you either couldn’t remember what the question was, or your scratching your head asking yourself, “What did he say?” Obama’s responses are as to later when questioned on them he can say, “You weren’t listening!”, or his other favorite, “You misunderstood my answer”. Typical Politicain way to answer specific questions as to not be bound to any answer! Obama supporters are saying that McCain must have known the questions in advance! NO, he is just a very wise experienced man that is ready on day one!
I will not be responsible for putting America’s fate and futer in the hands of a JR Senator Greenhorn!
The white house is not the place for O.J.T.
We have a president who goes with his “gut.” For those who are happy with the outcomes of his leadership - vote for John McCain.
I am ready for leadership that is nuanced and proactive. Look at how Obama has efficiently and effectively manage his campaign. Compare that to McCain’s and well, Hillary’s. In case of a big deluge…its Obama’s boat I’d get in.
Mc Cain brought hope and optimism to the forum. He did better than I could have ever imagined.
The statement: “McCain went on to cite al-Qaeda’s use of a mentally disabled suicide bomber last year as an example of “pure evil” and kept the focus on foreign evil.” isn’t exactally accurate.
McCain referenced to the use of two mentally disabled girls who al-Qaeda strapped bombs onto, then after sending them into a civilian crowd, detonated the explosives by remote control.
I thought this was the most informative forum I have ever seen. I think Rick Warren should be commended for the great job he did of asking questions of both candidates. It would be wonderful if we could have this kind of dialogue with every election. It was more informative then any pre-election debates I have ever seen.
Oh my god, the world is posed to have another “quick to the draw” world-vigilante of a commander in chief in charge of the world’s biggest military power and this article seems to think that that is a good thing. Michael Moore should release Fereinheit 11 fast. The world needs Obama. Now.
More interesting than thinking hypothetically about what would have happened is to ponder what did happen.
Sen. McCain roared agressively about defeating “Evil” and branding “Evil” narrowly as Osama Bin Laden and Al Queda. That doesn’t past the test of the simplest thinker. McCain’s thinking is premative. If Man could DEFEAT evil there would be no need for GOD (full stop).
Sen. Obama broached the question with humility, branding “Evil” in broad terms (seeing the beam in our own eyes) and acknowledging the seat of GOD’s authority, but recognizing our obligation to stand up and confront “Evil” on a daily basis with GOD’s help.
The two men are intirely different. Sen. Obama is closer to my understanding to faith.
A clear difference between McCain, a leader and ready to be commander in chief, and Obama, an inexperienced, empty talk fool. American must make the right choice in order to keep this great country safe and sound.
Senator McCain answer his questions very straight forward. Hmm, could that be why he that slogan on his bus? It left me believing that what he said was what he meant and most of all it differed little from the way he talked day in day out.
Now on the other hand Senator Obama was a very intellectual speaker and thought about his answers before speaking. He addressed the questions with Godly answers and often quoted scripture which made for good faith based responses. Unfortunately I can not say this is the Obama voice that come from the campaign trail nor is it the Obama voice that comes from the TV adds. If we are to be faith base we need to live God.
That maccain got mess up pretty bad in vietnam he don’t need to be president he needs help if he gets ellected he might attack the vietnamies.
McCain’s answer shows some narrowmindedness by referring to one and only evil Osama Bin Laden as if that were the only evil that exist and only exist in that form. Obama’s response was more broad and showed that evil exist in our daily lives as well as other aspects. He response was was more elevated and addressed a spiritual component and a worldly component. This response was more comprehensive and more appropriate specifically because of the environment in which it was asked. This was a religious forum, not a foreign policy debate. You (the author of this article) and the pundicts need to elevate your thinking.
McCain pretty much had some prepared statements that he wanted to make and just regurgitated his stump speech throught the forum and often did not really think about the questions asked. Obama took the time to actually answer the questions. His responses reflected the hard reality and complexity of the issues presented. McCain’s approach reflects the hasty decisions and reckless behavior that we have seen in the current administration that has gotten the country in the mess that it is in. Basically McCain approach displayed Bush on steroids.
On the “evil” question, Warren did not ask the same question of each candidate. Nevertheless, Obama’s answer was off-the-top, thoughtful and contained some depth of reason. McCain’s answer appeared rehearsed (not “commanding”), thoughtless and contained no depth of reasoning whatsoever. Furthermore, Warren did not warn McCain to avoid using the forum as a place to run stump speech ads, as he did Obama. Obama adhered to the format. McCain had ready-made answers, stump speeches, and often answered the questions before they were asked.
It’s too bad depth of reasoning is not the overriding criteria for evaluating a candidates qualifications to hold the office of the President of the United States. Without it there isn’t any character anyway.
We do not need a “waffler” as our Commander In Chief. We need someone with in depth knowledge of World Affairs and an ability to assess critical, on going events while keeping American interests as prime motivator in the decision process. McCain posesses those qualities, Obama does not.
[...] of the more telling aspects of last night’s forum held at Saddleback Church dealt with the question of what to do with evil. McCain and Obama gave two very different answers and really reflect on the mentality of both [...]
I love America & her beliefs ,if they are right, or wrong (unconditionally). I agree with McCains views 100%. If you have a child that has done wrong, do you abandon him or her ? Will Obama sell out America if he feels that we were the evil ones ?
It’s more presidential to consume all the nation’s resources on some quixotic quest to stamp out “evil”?
It’s not presidential to consider whether some actions might be making problems worse, whatever the intention is?
I don’t understand how it’s come down to this. So your litmus test for president is: are you a knee-jerk retaliator? Are people so full of bottled-up rage that they want their president to unleash the military at the first possible opportunity? Isn’t it more presidential to hold back until all other options are exhausted?
McCain was there to deliver campaign speeches as an answer to each question. I personally think he was “fed” and the the whole experience was set up to help McShame/Cain look good. His examples were empty, things he has used on the trail so many time. I got tired of “My friends” “My friends” how often does he say that on the campaign trail. I did not learn anything new about his faith.
I liked all the responses that Obama gave, he was thoughtful, truthful and he spoke directly to his host, Mr. Warren. I learned that Obama is a real person, he love the Lord and he tries to walk in the footsteps of our Savior.
Just my thoughts
Well Obama forgot to say he did not find an infant had a right to live if aborted even if it was alive at birth and he sure lied about the one time he crossed party lines as he copped out and voted with his party as usual. If the dems are against it he will vote with them even agaist his own bills.
Is there a download of last nights 2 hr debate?
If so, Where and How.
Thanks
The suicide bombers McCain mentioned were TWO, not ONE mentally-challenged women.
And it didn’t happen last year, it happened seven months ago (Feb. 1st).
I don’t think McCain’s comments were from his “gut” - I think his brain just works alot faster than Obama’s. Probably because McCain’s not pre-occupied with pandering - he believes what he believes and you can take it or leave it. Combine that with his genuin humility and you have someone Obama can’t hold a candel to.
Obama’s answers were halting because he has based his political career on the views of others in order to get into office. The only conviction Obama reveals is his plan for the Socialist America.
McCain was completely transparent; if ever I saw a “slick willie” I saw it in Obama last night.
VOTE McCAIN
COULD IT BE THAT AS AMERICANS WE ARE UNSURE OF WEATHER ITS APPROPRIATE FOR A PRESIDENTIAL CANIDATE TO PROVIDE A RESPONSE BASED ON HIS ‘GUT’ RATHER THAN HIS ‘BRAIN’
I HOPE NOT BECAUSE A ‘GUT’ DECISSION LEAD US INTO YOU KNOW WHERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The program really helped me to reinforce my need to vote for McCain.
Obama in his many responses where a one word or phrase would have explained a basic approach reveals his attempt to wiggle out of a direct confrontation to many “evils” of our time….thinking that God will do it is grasping at straws….we as a nation must stand up against evil and “defeat it” like McCain defines. This elitist view on things…desiring it both ways will do NOTHING to mdefeat true evil which we as a nation can strive for. So, given the genocide ongoing in iraq under Sadam…the use of WMDs by this ruler…to not tackle this issue directly and firmly even those many may have other motives not to…France and their oil contracts…Russia and their weapons contracts….and others thinking that diplomacy will change the man or the oil for food program did anything effective….you have to directly assault these issues….waiting for God to do his thing and the rest of the world to see true evil is a total waste of time and further lives lost. Obama…the true elitist who desires everything both way!!!!
After last night’s forum, I don’t wonder any longer. The true convictions and beliefs of both men were revealed. Obama has smooth words, but if one can look through the facade and examine the true meaning, one would see clearly what he does and does not represent. I feel that last night was extremely important for our country and the American people will vote with their conscience in November.
