Clyburn: Clinton Only Hurt Himself With Black Voters
South Carolina Congressman Jim Clyburn tells Fox News that he’s not surprised that Bill Clinton blames him for undercutting his reputation with black voters after the Democratic primaries — but that Clinton is himself to blame for any damage he might have incurred.
Clinton told ABC News last week that Clyburn “used to be” a long time friend of his, and that Clyburn “was not Hillary’s supporter. Never. Not ever. Not for a day.” Informed that Clyburn had said that the former president’s credibility with the black community had been damaged, Clinton responded “That may be by the time he got through working on it, that was probably true.”
Clyburn was a forceful critic of President Clinton’s campaign tactics during the South Carolina primary, calling Clinton’s comments — including his claim that he was having the race card played on him - “bizarre.”
“Black people are incensed over all of this,” Clyburn said at the time, adding that African Americans had come to a near unanimous conclusion that the Clintons were “committed to doing everything they possibly can to damage Obama to a point that he could never win.”
In an interview with James Rosen, Clyburn said President Clinton “is not correct in his conclusions” about his feelings towards Clinton’s wife, claiming that while his heart had been with Obama, his head had been with Hillary. Clyburn officially endorsed Obama just before the end of the process in June — but made his leanings clear throughout the process.
As for whether Clinton feels Clyburn undermined him with black voters, the congressman said “that’s easily to be understood from his comments, and I just beg to differ with that. Because the fact of the matter is, all the stuff that I saw reported were reports on things the President said from his own mouth.”
Clyburn specifically pionted to Clinton’s comparison of Obama’s win in SC to Jesse Jackson’s 20 years earlier - where Jackson won the black vote and not much else on the way to losing the Democratic nomination to Michael Dukakis.
“Most people thought that the most telling thing back in January was the equation that the president made of Jesse Jackson having won South Carolina caucuses 20 years earlier, and compared that with Obama winning the South Carolina primary. there’s a big difference in a caucus and a primary,” said Clyburn. “Irrespective of what the president may have meant by the statement, a lot of people interpreted that as having a racial connotation, and Jim Clyburn didn’t speak on that issue at all.”
As for whether Clinton did, in fact, hurt himself among black voters, Clyburn said “i don’t know that i’ve done any surveys to determine whether or not the president, former president has ever damaged himself or not.” What does his gut tell him? “My gut tells me that some things I ought to keep to myself.”
Relevant sections of Rosen’s interview and Bill Clinton’s comments to ABC are below.
CLYBURN INTERVIEW
BILL CLINTON COMMENTS
well, I think bill clinton referenced some comments that were reported in the New York Times back in January. Well, i just saw in the New York Times this past sunday in the magazine section what i really felt back then. And that is, my heart, yes, was with Barack Obama. The history is there. but my head was with hillary clinton. 16:54:38 So President clinton is not correct in his conclusions, because i said back then that conventional wisdom had it that the thing would be over around the fifth of February, and most people thought that Hillary Clinton would carry the day. And so i can understand the president’s emotions, but the fact of the matter is the facts as well as the statements that I made are to the contrary
HE SEEMS TO THINK YOU UNDERCUT HIM WITH BLACK VOTERS
Well, that’s easily to be understood from his comments, and I just beg to differ with that. Because the fact of the matter is, all the stuff that I saw reported were reports on things the President said from his own mouth. So I understand that most people thought that the most telling thing back in January was the equation that the president made of Jesse Jackson having won South Carolina caucuses 20 years earlier, and compared that with Obama winning the South Carolina primary. there’s a big difference in a caucus and a primary. when a lot of people thought the best analogy would have been John Edwards winning the South Carolina primary 4 years earlier. And so a lot of that, irrespective of what the president may have meant by the statement, a lot of people interpreted that as having a racial connotation, and jim clyburn didn’t speak on that issue at all.
DID CLINTON HURT HIMSELF WITH THE BLACK COMMUNITY?
Well, i dont want to put any kinds of assessment on that at all. I think that we’re all about putting this primary behind us, we’re all about going forward into the future, we’re all about winning the election in november. 16:57:07 And i think that there were 8 candidates in that race. 7 of them were not successful. And all the other 7 ought to be rallying around the one that was. And so, i don’t know that i’ve done any surveys to determine whether or not the president, former president has ever damaged himself or not. And until I see some surveys to that effect - (WHAT DOES YOUR GUT TELL YOU?)
16:57:35 well, my gut tells me that some things I ought to keep to myself.
CLINTON ABC INTV
SNOW: a lot of people, including your supporters, your donors, say that they blame you at least in part, for her loss. I know you’ve heard this.
BILL CLINTON: No — I’ve heard it from –
SNOW: Do you blame yourself at all?
BILL CLINTON: I’ve heard it from the press. And I will not comment on this because it interferes with the issue, which is who should be elected in November. I made hundreds and hundreds of speeches, Kate. I bragged on Senator Obama hundreds of times. Now, I will be glad, as soon as this election is over in January, to have this conversation with you and everybody else. I have very strong feelings about it.
SNOW: But, I don’t understand why you say it’s bad for him to go over –
BILL CLINTON: I live out here in the fact based world — Well, first of all, you say I don’t like this type of modern reporting that says, so-and-so anonymous says this. You know they all say this.
SNOW: Jim Clyburn. Not anonymous. New York Times came out–
BILL CLINTON: Not my supporter. Jim Clyburn
SNOW: A long friend of yours. A longtime friend.
BILL CLINTON: Used to be. He is not my– He was not Hillary’s supporter. Never. Not ever. Not for a day.
SNOW: He said you said you lost a lot of African-American support?
BILL CLINTON: No. The people who were–
SNOW: He said you severely damaged your standing with African-American support?
BILL CLINTON: First of all– Yeah. That may be by the time he got through working on it, that was probably true. But that’s not the same thing. You said I hurt her.

Hmmm. This coming from a back-stabbing, black, Obama supporter. Yeah. I’ll believe this when pigs fly . This is more of the Obama champaign stratagy because he’s afraid of being dumped at the convention in favor of Hillary.
Go back to sleep Clyburn.
President Clinton and his wife clearly has lost my confidence and respect. They cannot blame anyone for this but themselves. I wish they would go home. She ran a horrible campaign, stopping at nothing to destry her opponent. Yet it backfired on her. She is in multimillion dollar debt and lost the support of many people. If her supporters love her so much, pay her bills. Bill Clinton leaned on the Black community during his trial and we supported him. Now he says things that are clearly insulting. We know when someone is talking down to us and that is what he did. Mr. Clyburn is not the source of his woes, his bigoted heart is.
Clyburn is the turncoat. Clinton (neither of them) played the race card. It was Obama playing the card then just as he is doing now. Clyburn must be in line to get something from Obama but he should be careful….Obama flips on everything he says.
This article is just another way for the Obama campaign to keep race an issue in the process. Playing the race card again!
Clyburn has shown himself to be nothing but a two faced politician. Saying he supported Hillary is just a bunch of bull and everyone knows it. Mr. Clyburn was always an Obama supporter and trying to say anything different is ridicules. The race card was played and is still being played but not by the Clintons. I can not see how anyone can support this mans candidacy after all the information that has come out about this person. If blacks are voting for Obama because he is black then is that not racist?
Clyburn is just using President Clinton as an excuse for his turncoating to Obama and his support merely because of color - same thing when Jackson ran. It is now and always has been about color. The black population cares very little about promises; substance and experience. What they do not realize is that their votes are meaningless if they think they and their issues will be uppermost in Obama’s mind if he is elected. They will find soon enough that they benefited much more during the Clinton adminstration. Ignorance is no excuse - they should do their homework instead of climbing aboard the “media train”.
We all are given “freedom” of choice and to go along with the masses just “because” is very dangerous. We all live in this country and have the right to cast our votes without the undue and insulting pressure of the DNC; Pelosi; Dean who dictates to the media what they should keep under wraps and what they can report. Case in point - John Edwards. Now that the cat’s out of the bag and he is no longer considered to have any “connection” to Obama, the story is all over the place and it’s been out there for a year! So what is “under wraps” about Obama????? I would wager - a lot more than ever will be reported on.
I am now and always have been a Democrat and voted straight Democrat through the years since JFK. I will, however cast my vote as straight Republican - why? you ask? Because the real nominee was cheated out of the nomination with the manipulation of the DNC; Pelosi; Dean and the ever willing media to want to show the world the U.S. “great historical moment”. Well, I guess a black president is more “historic” than a first time ever female president. Shows the world how politically correct we are! What a joke. This great country that is slowly falling behind as being the “greatest”. Our economy is in the toilet; energy costs off the wall; wars in two areas in the middle east; our military spread thin; the rich getting richer and the poor paying the price.
The problem I have with Obama is we know next to nothing about him - only what he and his Chicago corrupt political machine wants us to know. I don’t like the idea of his continually avoiding questions in a public arena and lack of willingness to debate since he got whipped by Clinton in their last debate. He instead prefers to strut around mic in hand putting a different spin daily on his “plan”! Kerry was a novice flip-flopper. Obama is a master at the spin doctoring.
McCain or anyone else but Obama in 2008!
The mainstream media has repeatedly mentioned Bill’s Jackson comparison. There are a few other comments that were made, which were just as damaging if not more so. Comments that were made by both Hillary and Bill during the month of January.
On the MLK holiday, Hillary downplayed the role of MLK in the Civil Rights Act, She credited LBJ for the legislation. She defended her remarks by noting that MLK was not a politician in a position to propose and enact legislation. The Nobel Committee award their prize to King not Johnson.
The straw that broke the camel’s back. Bill was invited to speak on a very popular, nationally syndicated, black radio show to explain his remarks, as well as Hillary’s remarks. Bill aggressive defended the remarks, and used the free air time to put down Obama. Obama was not represented, and this pointed out to Mr. Clinton on air. Bill ramped up the rhetoric. The interview was cut short.
Let’s not forget the facts and the timeline, either. Clyburn’s comments came after Feb 5. This is noteworthy because Obama had built roughly a 140 lead in ELECTED delegates on that date. Obama maintained that lead in elected delegates until the end of the primary season. It never varied by more than 10-20 delegates.
The Clinton’s did it to themselves. Clyburn is just the messenger.
Who cares as long as they keep beating each other up we the people have a shot at getting a president that has some experience with dealing with the issues not a self consumed racist that has accomplished zilch to date.

Rudy NYC
Hillary was correct. Without Johnson having the ability to sign effective legislation that MLK was trying to get passed would of meant nothing. Clinton was trying to point out that not only was blacks concerned about civil rights for all but whites were also willing to put themselves out to make sure that equal rights was bestowed on all citizens of the U.S. To make it sound like Hillary was playing the race card is another Obama supporter twisting the words to suit themselves. Good try but anyone that paid attention to what Hillary Clinton was trying to get at knew exactly where she was coming from.
Blacks are much more prejudiced than whites. I’ve worked with blacks for the past 40 years and they are always looking for ways to cry “Race”. When the blacks could no longer use the Clinton’s, the blacks started playing the “Race Card”. I will never vote for Obama and will vote for McCain. First time to vote Republican, but I feel very good about it.
LEt’s be fair here! The Clinton’s never played any race card. The Blacks wanted a reason to get mad at them once they saw Obama as a “black” candidate - the made up reasons and acted like they had to turn on them - No all whites should show them they can’t win without our respect and our vote - all whites should now vote white no matter what. They want to play a race card then we play their race card.
I agree with Bill Clinton. The black community loved the Clintons until Obama came on the scene. Then when the blacks saw that Obama had a chance to be the nominee because of the Kennedy, Kerry, Daschle machine supporting Obama, it was then that the black community deliberately concocted an excuse to abandon the Clintons. The black community concocted a bogus excuse to abandon the Clintons, it’s as simple as that.
Thank you Rudy of NYC. Well said.
Well said J JOHNS!! Anyone but Obama….
Just like the Monica Lewinski thing, Bill Clinton is in denial about a lot of things he did and said.
Thanks to FOX NEWS, we have more dirt to sling at the Democrats.
Why can we not stick to the issues of this Campaign?
Blacks vote Democrat. Point Blank Period. It doesn’t matter who is running for President. We VOTE DEMOCRAT! So stop saying we’re voting for Obama just because he is black.
You people think one black person represents the whole community. It sounds like you’re the ones with the issues. We are the minority(fact) I don’t think a racist white person represents the whole race. Please stop it.
So when a black person says it racist, we’re playing the race card.
Doesn’t racism still exist?
Let me stop I forget you guys are Repubs.
I’ll just pray for you.
Clyburn is an IDIOT! the ONLY THING PEROID that made any difference is President Bill Clintons SKIN COLOR and mainstream media…Its an all out attack on WHITE people from the likes of racist idiots like Clyburn just another closet racist politican coming out!!!!! WAKE UP AMERICAN, these are just tiny samples of whats to come from an Obama coronation…

Dave,
Why would Hillary say something like that on MLK’s holiday? On all of the days out of the year. Out of all of the years when this could or should not have been said. Why say it at all?
Do you know the context in which she made the remark? Obama had praised MLK. Some had suggested that Obama was King’s dream incarnate. Clinton made the remark to downplay King’s role in history, and likewise Obama’s.
It was not meant to be a compliment by any stretch of the imagination. Also, you are not aware of the Bill’s comments on the radio that—most curiously—have not been played in mainstream media. As I said, the interview was cut short.
BILL WAS THROWN OUT OF THE STUDIO.
Race, Race, Race- the Dems can’t let it go. Guess what- when they see me they see white, when I see them I see black (brown really)-this means nothing other than the fact that our eyes notice colors. It was the media and the Dems and the black community that said that Pres. Clinton was our first black president-THEY SAID IT! Now they want to take it back. All of this is just refocusing our attention away from what matters for the good of OUR COUNTRY. By focusing on race they hope to get us off message and away from ISSUES.
Let’s be fair toward black Americans. I am white, born in the inner city, and I have lived life from the bottom upwards, never looking back. I have been the target of anger and racism because of my associations. Associations that began on the playing fields, but were viewed as treacherous toward my white roots.
I have seen many minority friends get left behind or passed over for no better reason that their skin color. I have seen myself get breaks for no better reason than my skin color. I know why Michelle Obama called America as being mean at times. Because it is a fact of American life.
Have you forgotten the negative reaction from black Americans that Obama received when the race first began? Have you chosen to ignore that Obama has support from mostly white Americans? Have you forgotten that blacks have voted 90% democratic in recent years?
Have you chosen to ignore the fact that as Obama’s support among white voters increased, so did his support among black voters? Is it possible that most black Americans disliked the Clintons for many of the same reasons that millions if white Americans did? Is it possible that black Americans changed their minds at the same times and for the same reasons?
It is not possible if you think that Black Americans are different from White Americans.
And let’s not forget the latest excuse for the Clinton primary loss. John Edwards.
The suggestion that had Edwards dropped out of the race before the end of 2007, before the first primaries, would have made a difference significant enough for Hillary Clinton to win is belied by the facts on the ground.
FACT: When Edwards did drop out, Obama went on a tear. Obama won 11 straight contests following John Edwards announcing his dropping out of the race.
Before Obama became a candidate, the black voting block loved the Clintons. If Obama wasn’t on the ticket, the 90% of blacks voting for him would all be voting for Hillary. But, as soon as a black candidate was actually in sight of the nomination, it was time for blacks to throw the Clintons under the bus, and play the race card. These latter comments by black leaders putting the blame on Bill Clinton, are extremely disengenuous, and are merely attempts at damage control, as well as attempts at solidarity for the black candidate, at the expense of the Clintons.
Blacks been voting for white presidents all their lives, why can’t we now be proud or feel good about voting for a black president? More whites will vote against obama because he’s black than blacks voting for him cause his black. And you wonder why Mrs Obama said what she said!! K.M.A!!
Why the beef with the Race card. most whites wouldn’t fathom seeing a Black man as they’re President anyways. Either way and the end the day ” YOUR STILL A RACIST” without me bringing it to your attention by playing the ” RACE CARD”!!! BARACK OBAMA!!
lets see if this get posted! Now who’s playing the race card
Pastor Manning in NYC says it all Blacks are disloyal and cannot be trusted..thier word means nothing and after Nobama looses neither will ther voting block…sad but true…they played the race card..All or nothing and I hope they end up with nothing…
Howard,
Your red neck is showing.
You are correct when you point out that Hillary had the vast majority of the black vote when the campaigns began in 2007. There were numerous debates during 2007. Hillary Clinton led the polls early on, and as the debates dragged on her ratings in the polls dropped.
Millions of voters black and white jumped from the Clinton bandwagon. So, if it is racism for black voters to change their minds to a candidate who happened to be black, what is it called when millions of white voters make the same decision?
What’s disturbing to me is that you, the Reagan Democrats/Independants are the ones who flip flop between parties. The black community has always stood behind the Democratic nominee regardless and people like John Kerry, Al Gore, and Bill Clinton got the benefit of that support. Now that a Democrat who happens to be black is still being supported by this same group, it has to be a black thing. Mr. Obama originally did not have the overwhelming support of this community, that is until what he stood for was heard and many, who still like the Clintons, have found him to be the more believable candidate for POTUS. Get over yourselves the Republican party has not helped the vast majority of you. You’re still just making it like the rest of us. Don’t be scared to print this FOX!!!!
My final comment on this thread. Not one black leader has ever publicly accused the Clintons of having played the race card. That accusation originated in the Clinton campaign in the face and name of Geraldine Ferraro, and was directed towards the Obama campaign. The race card charge has been made and promoted by members of the media, not by black politicians or leaders.
As for Bill Clinton being named “America’s First Black President”, that was a distortion of the words of Maya Angelou, which she herself has pointed out were taken out of context. A label that I scratched my head and wondered at when I first heard it. A label created by the media. Maya’s words were meant to describe the trials and tribulations that Bill Clinton went through during his terms in office. She was likening his persecution to the black experience in America. She was not describing the political preference of black voters, which is how the media categorized her words.
Clayburn talking still about race just to make sure people knows that he has something to do with Obama who was handed the nomination by the media and the DNC.
Obama will loose to McCain anyway. So, who cares about clayburn.
By insinuating that Obama won SC the same as Jackson 20 years prior, considering Jackson did win solely because of black voters, is to say that Obama won the state because of the black vote. I don’t believe that Clinton is a racist, I thoroughly enjoyed his presidentcy. Prosperity like no other. But the facts are clear. Hilary Clinton started to resort to the same tactics that Republicans use. The comment was made, for that reason. They were trying to downplay Obama’s appeal to the entire voting base. By saying that he was only being voted for by black people. These are tactics that Republicans have been using since he recieved the nomination. I don’t see them as racist, but they will do what it takes to win the presidentcy. The race card was not used by Obama, he has not demanded reparations. He has spoken out against Reparations, just like he has skirted the issue of being black, because he doesn’t want to win that way.
Obama did say during the primaries that the Clinton’s are using scare tactics to debase him. That his name is different, he isn’t patriotic, and oh by the way did I mention he was black. But when you look at what was said by the Clinton’s when they were downplaying his win in SC because it is predominately black. They used Race before he did. Now he didn’t say black when he changed up the comment toward the Republicans, because he wasn’t bringing up race. He said “oh by the way did I mention he doesn’t look like the man on the Dollar Bill. Because they have been constantly attacking him for everything. His comment does reign true because the McCain camp has brought up Obama’s physical condition, saying he is too skinny. That was his point, they are trying to do everything they can to divert attention away from the issues. Because when it comes down to it Obama has them beat Hands Down.
As a bi-racial southerner (Pre-Civil War heritage on both sides of the coin- Plantation owners, Confederates, and ex-slaves), It seemed quite blatant what Bill Clinton was doing by way of using words and phrases with racial overtones steeped in a history that he himself understands, which is why the Black community supported him in the past. That same understanding on Bill’s part is why many people truly believe that the loaded statements made by him where not accidental. My white grandfather who is a conservative Evangelical Christian Republican got quite a kick out pointing out how Bill turned on the Blacks who he believes have “blindly” supported the Democrats 90 (+)% every election (generally white candidates), because they were not supporting Hillary the same way. I think Obama was always going to get the majority of the Black support the same way Irish-Americans and Catholics overwhelmingly supported J.F.K, or Evangelicals supported Bush. However, I was one of those possible 20-30% who was on Hillary’s side up until Bill continued to insult my intelligence and understanding of code language that I grew up with in and outside of the home all the while my grandfather and his friends laughed it up saying “I thought he was the first Black President”.
My final comment on this thread. Not one black leader has ever publicly accused the Clintons of having played the race card. That accusation originated in the Clinton campaign in the face and name of Geraldine Ferraro, and was directed towards the Obama campaign.

what did geraldine say that was not true?
Who cares about either Clinton? What is important is that America should not be held hostage by the “screams of banshees” over whatever percieved slight? I do not follow the dictates of the “mullahs of political correctness”, and will not be a “victim or a party to” the demands of 13% of the population in the U.S. Revend Wright is correct! America sells drugs in “Black” neighborhoods. The drug of ” social dependence” and “psychological inadequacy”. Equality is earned, not given by.
Clayburn
I feel sorry for you because you are so shallow that you think because Obama looks black, he is going to get revenge on the white people who have done nothing. In case you have not noticed Obama’s family are not black American’s. the Clinton’s are the ones who have looked out for you, while Obama talks. Just what does his district in Chicago look like? Did he make it better, I hear that he did nothing, so what do you think he would do as president? Take a vacation in one of the 57 U.S. States? YOU KNOW THAT NEITHER OF THE CLINTON’S ARE RACISTS!! YOU ARE JUST TRYING TO RILE UP THE BLACKS. THANKS TO OBAMA AND YOU, YOU HAVE SET BACK THE MOVEMENT. WHITES ARE NOT THE RACISTS. WHEN YOU MISUSE YOUR POSITION LIKE YOU HAVE , YOU ARE COMMITTING AN UNFORGIVABLE ACT AND SHOULD BE RELIVED OF YOUR POSITION. YOU ARE NOT WORTHY OF IT. RACE BAITER, THAT IS WHAT YOU ARE.
