McCain: Russia needs to reverse “perilous course”

DES MOINES, IA — Sen. McCain called on Russia today to immediately withdraw their forces from Georgia during a brief statement upon arrival Friday morning at the Des Moines airport.

“Russia should immediately and unconditionally cease its military operations and withdraw all forces from sovereign Georgian territory. What is most critical now is to avoid further confrontation between Russian and Georgian military forces. The consequences of Euro-Atlantic stability and security are grave,” McCain said.  “The government of Georgia has called for a cease fire and for a resumption of direct talks on South Ossetia with international mediators. The U.S. should immediately convene an emergency session of the United Nations Security Council to call on Russia to reverse course. The U.S. should immediately work with the E.U. and the OSCE to put diplomatic pressure on Russia to reverse this perilous course that it has chosen.”

McCain also called for an immediate NATO meeting to review measures the alliance can take to stabilize the situation.

It is nice to see that one of our contending Presidental nominees takes the time to say something
about a very important issue. Vacations are nice but when you are in these gentlemen’s positions
their jobs are tantamount.

The EU had better get on top of this. McCain is right when he calls for immediate action.

McCain needs to shut up and let Bush do his own job. Didn’t McCain accuse Obama for doing the exact same thing last month in Gaza. Meddling in international affairs when you are only a candidate.

If McCain thinks this shows his “international expertise”, not to me. It shows a lot of hypocrisy on his part.

Look, every country goes to war to gain something. The U.S. went to war in Iraq for Oil. The Germans (unlike Obama’s misguided view) started World War II to gain land and resources.

We need to figure out why the Russians are battling in Georgia before we stick out noses in there. Maybe they have a good reason and it’s none of our business. The last thing we need is GW Bush getting us mixed up in someone else’s military mess.

That’s the way to do it.
Send clear signals to our allies–Russia and Georgia–and other NATO countries that the current aggression between the Georgians and their people and from Russia could result in action by NATO countries.

Although he isn’t President and has no authority to call anybody. The fact that he’s showing where he stands will be strong signal to our allies that as President–he won’t hedge on the fence when it comes to the sovereignty of nations and his will to establish a set of expectations from our allies on what to do when another nation aggressively attacks or invades the borders of another.

Obviously Mccain knows better how to handle this situation than Obama. I cant believe what Obama says… Wow potential US President hunh? More like a rookie on the wing!
Excellent choice of words and recomendations Mr Mccain!

We can now see who is better equiped to be our President

Hey John, I heard there is oil in Russia. I’m getting itchy. I think it’s time we make the world safer. Get your finger ready! I say it’s time we go after their petro-dictator who is intent on using today’s sky-high oil revenues to obtain weapons of mass destruction. C’mon John, I know you like a good war like the rest of us. Hell, maybe we can China to foot the bill for this one too.

The Cold War returns….now Russia will try to get back all those other countries it had in the past as buffers. So much for diplomacy…..now how would this play out with Obama….we will talk them out of it…but they are already in the country….no actiopn Obama should likely be the new term. True there is little that can be done now but this is the same issue with the Cold War and look what defeated that…economic power and isloation…another Iran but this one has many nukes. Seems that the USA needs to be another anti-Cold War force again…or else Georgia will not be the last on the list for Russia invasion. So much for the Russian Bear wanting to get along with others….and everyone thinks sanctions on Iran will work if Russia gives aid and helps Iran with continued nuke development…Do I see an Israel attack soon???

You better get out of Iraq YOURSELF!!! And this man is going to be your president????

Imagine an energized Parti Quebecois, flush with victory in a sovereignty referendum, telling the rest of Canada that Quebec is a sovereign nation - separate from Canada. Now imagine Canada rolling in with armored personnel vehicles to rightfully reassert governmental authority.

Now imagine the United States government siding with Parti Quebecois and rolling tanks across the border and firing rockets at the Canadian military…. that’s pretty much what’s happening in Georgia right now. It may be that the Ossetian Georgians have a legitimate beef with the federal government - a reason for succession, but Russia shouldn’t be getting involved with it.

I don’t think the reasons the Russians offer for their involvement (in Georgia) are any more legitimate than the reasons the United States has been giving Russia regarding the placement of missile systems in former East Bloc nations. Both are egegious violations of acceptable international standards of behaviour.

McCain is absolutely right. We cannot tolerate Russian imperialism. If we allow Russia to expand here, where will be next the Baltics, the Ukraine, Kazikstan? McCain must prove he is Reagan’s heir. He must affirm a policy of peace through strength. Appeasement will only lead to war.

Yeah get out Russia you know liberating folks who don’t want to belong to a country is our job.

I call upon our president to mobilze our NATO forces worldwide in the case that they are needed to offset the growing Russain threat world wide. What if this grows out of control and we need to defend our friends in Europe? I call upon the west to defend her global partners. We need to send a strong message to the Kremlin that we won’t put up with this act of agression against a soveriegn nation. I also call on the EU to condem this act and put all availabe units in thier armed forced on high alert because if they take a blind eye this then they should be able to defend themselves until we arrive. Who knows what the Russians have up thier sleeves??

Comment by Joseph

Bush insisted on the pursuit of a missile defense system built within Georiga and facing against Russia. He welcomed Georgia’s future membership into the U.N., also seen as a snub or slap in the face by the Russians. The Russians adamantly opposed a missile defense system so close to their borders. True to Bush’s usual bad form, Bush would not relent and would not negotiate or compromise. So now, we have the Russians attacking Georgia and showing that they meant business when they said they would not allow this. Thanks Bush! You messed up again!

Kind of sad that Georgia has been a staunch ally of the United States in Iraq. They are a democracy and need to be helped now. We preach democracy around the world but we are now sitting this one out. I know we can’t fight everyone’s wars but these people are going to be destroyed. Where is the United Nations now? Russia has been rebuilding their military since the Clinton years and even more so now. Putin is a former KGB agent and it is now business as usual in Russia. His hand picked candidate is a clone of him and Putin is still running the country. Russia is not a friend of the United States and now is the time for uus to say so.

Comment by DAK

First of all McCain should tell to his president withdraw american military forces from Iraq and then think about other world. Suppose Mr. McCain worries about his rating and not about other people.

Comment by Vega

Gosh. McCain makes Bush look good on foreign policies. Bush had way more sensible response to this problem (unlike McCain, he took time to evaluate the situation and learn what actually is going on in there). McCain should not be allowed anywhere near White House.

Comment by nukenate

Many of my friends compare this to the war in Iraq. I disagree, this is something completely different. This is Russia trying to reassert it’s self on the world stage and show it still has power.

I also think this will help McCain on his campaign. They say something with Iran would help, but who guessed that it would have been Russia? I only wish that Georgia would have made NATO, and this would not have happened.

Comment by Michael from Atlanta

How can McCain advise against Russia about their pursuit of war while he supports our continued pursuit odf war? Did Bush/McCain listen to the advice from the Russians when they decided to go to war in Iraq?

I think this can best be attributed to the fact that McCain Foods Limited is a privately-owned, multinational leader in the frozen food industry.

McCain Foods is the world’s largest producer
of frozen French fries and the manufacturer of other quality food products sold in more than 110 countries.

How presumptive and arrogant of this man to speak as if he were already the President!!! WHAT A HYPOCRITE!!! At least Obama didn’t threaten other nations (let alone a Superpower) while he did his meet and greet in Europe. McCain is a nothing more than a flimsy, pandering, bitter, disgrace of a man.

russia wants the pipeline from the caspian sea through georgia and into europe. it just came on line about 2 years ago. russia wants to control that energy source. russia already supplies 1/4 of european oil and 1/2 of it’s natural gas.

he’ll be able to put the screws to europe. he’s already cut of the pipelines from the old repulics that run through russia. he’ll do the same to europe when needed.

that’s why it’s so important to drill in the us and develope our own resources.

this is a big post cold war move by russia- on the level of invading afganistan.

mccain is right to condemn it.

this is way over obama’s head- he’s no clue, out of touch. and definitely not ready to lead

Comment by rags1488

McCain is obviously the better choice here. I am sure that he knows the situation far better then Oblama. This situation puts even more emphasis for the U.S. to start drilling it’s own oil wells and promoting substantially research on alternative fuels. Nuclear Plants should be built on a high speed, responsible course and the Russians will have to be kept at arms length until this is settled.

B.O. has NO authorization to “PLEDGE” ‘American Support’ By himself! to Anything…

He can ‘pledge’ his own scrawny butt to support the people of Georgia, or Rainbow Brite…

But - He is only one congressman (that has not reported to his job of congressman for at least a year) and has not yet become the All Mighty ruler of “all there is” ???

What a Giant Headed FOOL…(one that thinks to himself that He is all there)…
See Him for What He is America.

Too bad McCain spoiled his chance to show his grasp of international affairs by mispronouncing the Georgia President’s name… three different ways on August 11th. During that speech… apparently three parts of it were lifted from Wikipedia without giving the online encyclopediaa credit! Since he doesn’t know how to use the internet, guess some poor speech writer will be the scapegoat! Either way, someone committed the crime of theft of intellectual property…. plagiarism!

Oh yea… and what does he have to say for himself? He threaten Russia! Instead of saber rattling… Obama’s approach is a more reasoned and measure call for intense DIPLOMATIC efforts. And you McBabble fans have too much gall to criticize Obama for taking a vacation… when your candidate has not shown up to work in his Senate office since April!

Ya know we just have a bunch of f-22 pilots in need of target practice

We [the USA] could help stop the hostitlities by seting up a “No Fly Zone” along the narrow border
to stop the bombing and we have such nice toys for the attacking tanks that the georgians
could borrow.
Same old Russia, Same old nonsence. Any country has the right to stop armed rebels
with in its own borders. We [USA] should assist.

Ya Know WE [The USA] have a bunch of F-22 pilots who need some target practice so….
WE could assist the Georgian goverment by setting up a “NO FLY ZONE” along the Russian/Georgian
border. it is very narrow and would not be difficult . PLUS there is nothing like a deadly raptor
waiting at the border to encourage diplomacy.

WE could also loan them some Patroit anti aircraft units

We should help because we can help and it’s the right thing to do. KEEP THE PEACE !!

WE ALSO HAVE SO MANY NIFFTY NEW ANTI TANK SYSTEMS THAT NEED TESTING !!

WE MUST STOP TH “SAME OL’ SAME OL’” RUSSIAN AGGRESSION AND NOW
LETS GO MR PRESIDENT SHOW US IF YOU GOT “THE RIGHT STUFF”

Thank You Mc Cain for your serious comments about Russia I know you will be the one to protect America for real.

[...] McCain’s first statement immediately laid blame on Russia for the conflict while Obama and the White House initially called on “restraint” from both Georgia and Russia. However, Obama has more recently ratcheted up his anti-Russia rhetoric as the week has gone on and has essentially adopted what Rice calls McCain’s “belligerent” tone. [...]
