McCain calls for “economic surge”
JACKSON, OH — Vowing to cure the ailing economy with a combination of lower taxes, spending cuts and increased trade, John McCain pledged to launch an “economic surge” during a visit Wednesday to southeastern Ohio.
“What we need today is an economic surge, our surge has succeeded in Iraq militarily, now we need an economic surge to keep jobs here at home and create new ones,” McCain said, standing in front of about two dozen employees of the Merillat custom cabinet company and 30 foot skits of cherry wood.
While the presumptive GOP nominee did not announce any new details or proposals today, the campaign is recasting his economic plan in the language of the successful military strategy in Iraq. Spokesman Tucker Bounds said McCain’s domestic plan will “surge the amount of money in family budgets and grow jobs one small business at a time.”
“We need to reduce the tax burden on businesses that choose to make their home in the United States of America. We need to open new markets to U.S. products and we need to reduce the cost of healthcare and we need to end the out of control spending in Washington that is putting our debt on the backs of our children,” McCain said following a tour of the Ohio-based furniture company. “Now is the time for action, and when I am President, we are going to get it done.”
His call for a “surge” comes on the same day the Arizona Senator released a new ad, “Family,” in which McCain again attacks Obama as “the biggest celebrity in the world” (this time without images of Paris or Britney) promising “higher taxes, more government spending” and “fewer jobs.” (See video above)
McCain also echoed the attack in his statement today. “Senator Obama’s plans would raise taxes on businesses even more. He has promised tax increases on income, tax increases on investment, tax increases on small businesses,” McCain said. “That is exactly, exactly the wrong strategy. Raising taxes in a bad economy is about the worst thing you could do because it will kill even more jobs when what we need are policies that create jobs.”
The Obama campaign called the latest TV spot “dishonest.”
“While Senator McCain knows that Senator Obama has proposed cutting taxes for 95% of American families, what he’s not telling us is that he wants to give $4 billion in tax breaks to the oil companies, continue giving tax breaks to corporations that ship our job overseas, and provide no direct tax relief for more than 100 million middle-class families. It’s time to retire these old policies and bring new energy to America,” said Obama spokesman Bill Burton.

I thought that Obama was thinking about about adopting the tboonpickens plan? He should, so should McCain. I read the article about Obama and the boone pickens plan at?? http://www.tboonpickens.com I cant figure out which one of these two Im voting for., Im hoping a third party candidate will surge so I can get behind another candidate other then these two. I would of Voted for Huckabee, Clinton, or Ron Paul. Geesh.
I think Paul is thinking about running on the LP ticket. http://www.BarrPaul08.com , I just cant bring my self to vote for McCain. He seems like his age might be wearing on him a bit. The last thing we want is for McCain to end up a puppet., like hes already showing signs of. Did you see where that reporter stumped him and he just sat there not saying a word for like 2 minutes??? Unreal. Or the clip of him cussing, man what a potty mouth. LOL I think the video was at http://www.McCanes.com This election season is just one big dissapointment after another. The only that makes it worth watching is the candidates gaffs and antics. If you havnt seen McCanes reaction to the Paris tape go to http://www.mesocash.com, Hallarious.
A surge….hmm kinda like a tax rebate or something?
Yeh….if only we had done that already!
John…we get it…the Iraqi surge wasn’t a failure…but you can’t run on that platform for president…
Republican fed up with people putting party before country…..Obama ‘08
An “Economic Surge.”
Can someone please explain to me just what exactly that is or actually means?
Didn’t McCain say economics was one his weak points? Who is advising this guy right now?
I sure hope the rumors that McCain is showing symptoms of Alzheimer’s Disease aren’t true. Keep him in your prayers.
Go John!
It is impossible for me to comprehend how Obama’s social and economic agenda will help the economy.
He promises to raise taxes on most professionals and small businesses–who will likely shrink payrolls and increase the costs of products/services as a result.
His plan for social programs–envisions a new program for nearlyevery human malady!! These programs would not be budget neutral–and would be paid for with the presumptive savings of the war in Iraq–but diverting that revenue to social programs.
What good is it to pull out of Iraq–just to keep spending billions a month on social programs–particularly when 25 % of the participants could be illegal aliens?
McCain would have to be an idiot not to beat Obama on the issue of taxes. There is no way Obama could achieve anything he has identified–without massive expansion of federal revenues from taxes and/or defense cuts.
Just as the failed foreign policy of Bush-McCain has led to the Iraq debacle and it’s unnecessary war, so has the last seven years of the administration’s incompetent fiscal policy led to today’s poor economic conditions. Why on earth would anyone vote for McCain who himself helped create these problems? He has been in Congress 27 years and now suddenly has all the answers?
McCain knows the economy, the Economy of guaranteed salary & health care. He’s never had a non-government job in his adult life.
Republicans lost my vote a long time ago by taking us into Iraq and wasting 1 trillion dollars on that country instead of ours. 1 trillion dollars would have gone a long way for energy independence. Now we’re broke and McCain wants to do more of the same.
If McCain wants to address the mortgage crisis he should confer with his economic pal Sen. Gramm who, while on the Banking Committee ,pushed for the deregulation of the mortgage industry.Gramm’s wife Wendy sat on the board of Enron and together they created the Enron loophole that deregulated the electronic platform industry allowing Ken Lay to rip off California of 40 billion dollars. As far as taxes go,what bigger tax on the American people than the Iraq War.A tax is defined as a financial burden on a society so to support the war is to support a tax increase.
We need more explanation on this. What does economy surge include? I am not ruling for anyone, i just need more explanation.
Actually the small businesses will fail and the bigger ones will go back over seas if the can or just close their doors so Obama talks a good talk but I have seen more and more small companies colaspe in the last year from being over taxed and now they are required to pay for higher workmans comp and insurances on their companies. So heck let’s just tax them right out of our country as the dems raise gas prices and push ethinal which is a higher more leathal pollutant and worse on the dems green house theory. So why are they doing this? So they do not have to cut government spending by 5% and pork can keep going up and up.
By the way Obama voted no on that government spending cut of 5% and he also wants to end the little tax break Bush gave lower incomes, you know that little $500 per child one. So you eill keep paying more taxes if you think of the ones you wont be gettin any more. And while we are on that subject, if you are lower income you get all you taxes back and then some, that and then some is from the higher incomes, oil companies and every business out there now. So who do you think are paying the taxes now? 100% of the fed taxes are paid by higher incomes and businesses not lower incomes so why are we complaining? Oh yeah we want to steal more of their money. They don’t deserve it even though they paid for that education as all the college students are now, they build that company, and it is their blood, sweat and tears that helped them ear that money but what the heck they shouldn’t have it we lower incomes should. We didn’t ear it, it isn’t our company so what right do they have to it? Because it is theirs!!!!!!!!!!!! Think if you were the one who spent years building up your company and some snot nosed politian came along and said, ” You need to give that money to us, we in the government need it for our pork and wasteful spending and we plan on tossing some crums to the fools who think we are for them.” Because the truth is the democrats are not for you. Look at Palosi, and her you all say you are for drilling so you get re-elected and I’ll block the vote until after the election. Then you have Obama, ” I’ll think about drilling if it is enviormentally safe”, knowing it will never hit the floor so he is safe and can use it to get elected then the dems can just say NO. Wake up people.
Well McCain Nice try, That was acutally Ronald Regans plan. Oh But wait that did work saved us from Carters High gas prices and lasted through out all the clinton years. So way to go McCain. At least even if you stole Regans plan you have a plan. More than BO has. All BO has is a tire gauge and BO.
I know this must burn you B.O. supporters. That the Candidate you support is a complete idot. That so funny. Next thing He will say is We can creat big engines to power turbines to create wind to blow our wind powerd genorators. LOL. I be you obama supporter would say Yea thats a great idea. So funny to watch a idot lead an army of idots that nod their heads to his every word.Democrates really cant think for themselves. That why they elect people that tell them how they should.. lol.
Economic Surge?????? Made me laugh when I first heard it.
I wouldn’t use the word “surge” if I were McCain since the book by Suskind came out talking about the invalid reason we went into war in the first place.
I strongly believe we should not have gone to war in Iraq.
I only see McCain having two positives - he served our country and he is against pork barrel spending.
COMMENT FOR KEN: Before you question the intellect of others, please go back to school and learn how to spell better than a third-grader–you sound like a moron.
It’s funny to see people act like they’re some much smarter than everyone else (especially those who take the opposing view) when they can’t even spell or use proper grammar. I don’t know how you can spell things wrong on a public forum when the comment box has a spell checker! Ken, you can’t spell and you use punctuation and capitalization wrong. Go back to elementary school! Same thing for you KC. Talk about run on sentences. Oh and by the way and its ethanol, not ethinal. I can’t believe there are people that stupid in this country! Now I know how Bush got elected to a second term.
For some reason it’s hard to make politicians understand economics. They scream, “Lower Oil Prices” and “Housing Crisis Bailout” while the real problem is jobs.
Count the jobs that have been out-sourced along with manufacturing to Canada, Mexico and the Far East. Then ask, what are those people doing now? Flipping burgers at McDonalds for minimum wage? Then ask why they can’t pay their mortgages. It’s crystal clear that working people do not feel the economic down-turn nearly as much as the millions of unemployed.
John McCain, give the people jobs and the economy will return better than ever. Bring home our manufacturing and this country will be strong again.
My fellow Americans, I urge you to write B.O. and let him know exactly where he can stick ‘his’ tire guage….
Remember inflate, and inflate often…
Excellent. Economic surge. Great way to remind people of the link between the economy and the Iraq war.
i hope McCain can explain what he calls a serge before he rams this one down our throats. i knew he would slip iraq in the cinversation somewhere, he just can not stay away from bragging about ‘HIS’ serge in iraq that was so successful. please spare us the agony and list step by step what you think is a serge and how do you measure success McCain.
would this be by 2030 having 45 nuclear plants in everyone’s back yards or having oil fields up and down every highway in america. that’s okay i guess we can look thru the riggs as we are trying to enjoy the beauty of our beaches and i am sure you are going to garantee us never to have an oil spill and of course all the oil fields will be so successful that we will never need anything but oil and nuclear waste in our lifetime……hummm……..so sad for the next generation. once more i guess we can leave it up to our grandchildren to clean up the bush/McCain mess!!!
“……did not announce any new details or proposals today”
that’s the problem with McCain…….the only ideas he can come up with have been Bush’s ideas……drill offshore & ANWAR are Cheney/Bush ideas. The oil guys.
America - 300 Million people, 400 Million opinions, go figure!
How much does a congressperson cost in you state?
Do you own one?
Me thinks someone’s envy is showing, Louis… “All of the above” is what should be done to significantly reduce our dependence on foreign oil and the Dems are not siding with the American people on this point, also the surge DID WORK so Dems can only focus on the fact that we were wrong to go in to Iraq, not on the safety and security of America. NO FUTURE to both of those positions. Ken was a bit crude but the Dems have been dim on at least these two major issues. The Dems will be toast in a Dem year…pitty
Louis I did not see Ken addressing you personally…me thinks someone’s envy is showing. The Dems thought they had the upper hand on the economy and the war but they have managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Both of those issues now belong to the Repubs. Thank you Nancy and Harry and the other greenies. Thank you DNC for selecting a ter rorist loving, race -baiting, empty suited leftie to run in a Dem year.

Economic surge. McCain is playing checkers on a chess board.
For those linking McCain’s policies to Reagan’s, the US economy was in a completely different place when Reagan took office.
EVERYONE wants lower taxes. That’s like saying, “I want better healthcare.” GREAT! WHAT are you going to cut? Your plan is completely meaningless unless you answer WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO CUT?
I venture to say that have of your crowing about this motherhood and apple pie statement (which is the easiest thing in the world to blurt out) - if he were successful - would end up with no education, health care, government subsidy, or infrastructure program.
If you own LOTS of Exxon shares, though, you’re golden so long as you don’t mind the country crumbling around your gated estate.

The Obama campaign loves misleading Americans. McCain isn’t proposing $4 billion in tax breaks to the oil companies. McCain is promising to reduce the capital gains tax, which would impact every American corporation. Sorry Obama but that just happens to include oil companies, who pay half of their profits in taxes. And the 100 million “middle class” families who get no tax relief don’t pay taxes. Why should they get relief from something they don’t pay?
MCCAIN IS ONLY SKELETAL REMAINS
OBAMA IS A BRAINLESS VERSION OF PARIS HILTON
VOTE FOR MIDGE MOONEY
It is so sad to see the McCain campaighn so desparate for any success story.. They would have us believe the “surge” in Iraq succeed. Succeeded in what? The insurgents have simple stopped fighting because they sense Obama is going to be the next president and with that time table they plan to resume their quest to take over their country.
With this premature declaration of victory, the McCain campaign wants use a sales approach to our economy, hoping we will buy into this supposed “surge” success.
Bush made the same mistake when he made the premature declaration of victory in Iraq in May 2005. It looks like McCain is indeed a 3rd term Bush candidate.
Catchword, and intriguing new concepts in rhetoric–doesn’t impress me.
Mr. McCain–how about let’s take a look at the $2+ billion we give to Israel every year for their defense–gratis the American taxpayer!!
At the same time–their government officials constantly visit and speak all over the country collecting private donations to “Israeli defense”.
Between the U.S. Government–and the hearts of U.S. Jewish citizens–the Israeli government probably pays less for it’s defense than the Rhode Island State Police!!!!
I’d like to here either one of these idiots explain why American taxpayers–need to pay for Israeli defense? When the GNP deomonstrates with a tax system–they could adequately support themselves!!! Must be nice to live in a tax-free state where all the heavy lifting financially is done by allies–and expatriot jews.
Libertarians-2008
Wake and see the world as it is–not the way the political elite want you to think it is.
Me and Sam Adams–worked hard and risked our lives–the least you could do is educate yourselves and fight for your share of the common wealth.
Students of economics will tell you–we need to allow the system to adjust itself.
Our economy is the wealthiest and most aggressive on the planet–with global interactions. The world needs our products, intellect, and people.
Both McCain and Obama–are in pshychological denial of the reality that the system we’ve created over 200 years–will adjust itself. Creating grandiose programs–and injecting federal tax dollars to pre-empt the demise of failed institutions/consumers–won’t help and will likely make things worse by extending the pain over decades instead of years.
Theres a good–reason so many Americans are moving to the Libertarian Party.
Here are just a few reasons so many Americans are ready for a third party; enormous foreign aid to NATO, UN, Israel–despite the reality many of the nations and organizations could be on a “self-pay” basis amounting to state welfare for foreign nations; continuous decisions of what is healthy, moral, and just–then forcing those decisions on all Americans–without majority consent.
Our government is focused on their own power–and the microcosm they represent–not what is best for the nation.
Bob Barr 2008–he will keep every promise- and veto any bill that reduces our liberty and rights under the constitution and bill of rights.
I’m so over the GOP and Democrats–50+ years of corruption, greed, ignorance, and self-service. It’s time we took a stand for real change!!
Well I haven’t heard or read a comment from a blog coming from a Oboma supporter who understands a thing about the issues are. The problem here folks is that people dont understand the issues so when politicians talk about them people dont understand. I have read so many dumb comments from OB side. I’m a Ron Paul supporter but please the only thing I hear from the democratis is their opinion.
Ken
I Obama should give us a dollar every time he says the word change. That would work instead of the 1000 rebate check or whatever.
Can an OB supporter mention one substatial idea for change that OB has that he hasn’t flip flopped on??
Ken
What we need is a purge in D.C. fat cats and against 22 million illegals, not a surge in gum flapping.
Obama voted for the billions of dollars in tax breaks for big oil, McCain voted against it. Obama is going to raise taxes causing lots of job losses and increased dependence on foriegn oil.
Democrat tired of all the lies… McCain in ‘08
McCain has the right idea to drill offshore. Using food corn for fuel is wrong when it takes food out of the mouths of children. It would take another 20 years to get corn and wind power up enough to even help. The offshore drilling would be faster than anything to lower the gas cost at the pumps! The democrats want you to ride bi-cycles. Here is Obama’s ideas!
http://goodtimepolitics.com/2008/08/03/sneak-up-on-them/
Apparently if we can get John McCain elected there will be such a thing as a free lunch! While he is at it, how about free healthcare? I would love to know how he plans to reduce the cost of healthcare. I do not believe that can be done without changing to a “single payer” system.
This one is for Cayla and all those people who believe good spelling and good grammar equate intelligence— Intellect and education do not always equate to wisdom and good truth based knowledge. On the flip side I know a lot of “educated” people who are idiots and way off in outer space with their ideas but can beat anyone in a debate with their flowery language and intellectual elitism. I know many people who might be considered geniuses that can’t spell for their lives. Attacking people because of their inability to spell as opposed to engaging in discussion around the issues is really sad. You should be ashamed and stand up and be counted on where you stand on these important issues. Here is a phrase for the day— “Many are ever learning but never come to a knowledge of the truth”. Those supposed intellectuals out there who want to slam someone for their spelling and grammar need to ask themselves 1 important question, “Is the info that I digest everyday helping me gain true knowledge and wisdom or am I just learning information and regurgiting it out of my articulate, awe inspiring pie hole?” Now for those of you who wish to attack people for things other than their opinion please respond. Even if I mis-spelled somehting for which I will ask for your divne forgiveness ahead of time. Thanks
It’s worth a try. Worked in the middle east. Beats anything Pelosi is doing on her vacation.
WHY DON’T WE HOLD OUR POLITICIANS ACCOUNTABLE? I FOR ONE AM SICK AND TIRED OF THESE PEOPLE DICTATING THEIR AGENDA. THERE IS A FIX TO THE PROBLEM. EVERYONE THAT IS ON A PAYROLL, GO TO YOUR PAYROLL ADMIN. ASK FOR A W-4. LET THEM KNOW THAT YOU DON’T WANT ANYMORE TAXES TAKEN OUT OF YOUR CHECK. PUT THAT MONEY INTO A SAVINGS OR A SAFETY DEPOSIT BOX. COME JANUARY 1, START EVALUATING HOW YOUR POLITICIANS DID. YOU HAVE UNTIL APRIL 15 SO YOU WILL BE ABLE TO GET AN IDEA IF THEY FAILED, MET EXPECTATIONS OR EXCEEDED IN EXPECTATIONS. THIS IS FOR FEDERAL AND STATE. IF EVERYONE WAS TO DO THIS I DON’T THINK A LOT OF THESE IDIOTS WOULD BE IN OFFICE LET ALONE SIT IN FOR MULTIPLE TERMS. WE THE PEOPLE NEED TO TAKE BACK WHAT IS RIGHFULLY OURS. MAKE A STAND AND SHOW THESE POLITICIANS WHAT IT MEANS TO WORK EVERDAY AND POSSIBLE STRUGGLE!!
A noun, a verb, and “Surge”.
His economic proposals haven’t changed, just putting a nice spin and more rhetoric on it.
Proposals he outlined before fall far short what is needed, and hasn’t showed how to pay for tax cuts and reducing deficit. probably only way is to cut social plans in some way, but he leaves that for now. Amazed that candidates have to spend millions in 30 seconds ads, while for most who want to vote it should be quite clear if they read their respective programs. The low point is a discussion about tire pressure, as long not talk about real issues, or behold give some detailed aspects of plan. Journalism plays along without asking tough questions. Like it probably takes many years for offshore drilling have any effect. Fine, the alternative for nuclear or making efficient cars and the like is not a small endeavour either, which probably take a decade or more.
Mike, After reading your blog I just had to respond. First what made you pull your vote is exactly what won mine. I do believe we should be in Iraq. And I would go futher by saying we should stay there as long as we did in Germany. Oh we are still in germany. Because it was right. It more than winning a war its changing the way of life. They are raised hating us we have to be there long enough so they start to understand and not hate us this will take a couple genorations. We get out now We will have to go back in 15 to 20 years. And as for it costing so much. What exact do you thing this money went for? 500 BILLION WENT TO American Jobs Like Navistar and International. They defense contract that keep Americans in work. That helped pull us through some tough times. Why dont you look it up it on the web. 80 TO 90 PERCENT of the money spent was spent giving americans jobs to build the needs for our troops. But I know that dont fall in line with it being wrong does it. well tough It was the right thing to do and still is.
WOW Chris you REALLY are a moron….. Wanna talk about an individual that puts his party and run for the Presidency before his country????
Talk about the MOST proliferal FLIP FLOP candidate in recent memory….
Obama would rather America Lose the Iraq war than Lose his chance at being president!!!
Grow up dude
