After Getting Hit by GOP with Tire Gauges, Obama Strikes Back

Yesterday the McCain campaign and Republicans gleefully taunted Barack Obama for advising a voter last week to make sure her tires were inflated properly to improve fuel efficiency. A McCain senior advisor even distributed actual tire gauges to reporters covering the McCain campaign - an effective strategy as images of the instrument emblazoned with “Obama’s Energy Plan” along the side hit the media.

The Obama team initially defended Obama’s remarks by sending emails out to reporters that quoted Charlie Crist (FL Gov and McCain veep contender), NASCAR’s website, and Bush’s own EPA for doling out the same advice.

Later, the Obama campaign admonished their McCain counterparts in an email. “Who ever let the facts—or supporters’ positions—get in the way of a political attack? Aboard the Low Road Express, that’s no problem at all,” the statement read.

Today Barack Obama decided to fight back - and breathe new life into the story - by personally addressing the McCain camp’s clever gimmick at his Berea, Ohio, town hall meeting. “Let me make a point about efficiency, because my Republican opponents — they don’t’ like to talk about efficiency,” Obama began, recalling the town hall where a voter asked Obama what she could do personally to help increase her fuel efficiency. Obama admitted it was “simple” advice, but added he also has a substantial long term plan.

Referencing the “little tire gauges” the Republicans have been hawking, he incredulously continued, “They know they’re lying about what my energy plan is, but the other thing is they’re making fun of a step that every expert says would absolutely reduce our oil consumption by three to four percent. It’s like these guys take pride in being ignorant. You know? They think it’s funny that they’re making fun of something that is actually true. They need to do their homework. Because this is serious business. Instead of running ads about Paris Hilton and Britney Spears, they should go talk to some energy experts and actually make a difference.”

Obama punctuated his rant as the crowd cheered. “I mean, c’mon. This is serious.”

I’m afraid Obama is right on this issue. Fuel economy is serious, and it’s bizarre that anyone would make fun of any attempt to improve it when gas is so high. Sometimes I wonder myself if anyone in DC knows what it’s like to fill up the tank for ordinary folks.

McCain’s obama energy policy gag was dishonest on so many levels. During speech where Obama made the tire/tune suggestion, he was actually using it to make the point that solving the energy crisis is not all about drilling for more oil … that increasing our efficiency could very well do more for the state of energy than drilling. In typical repug fashion, the repugs lied about what Obama said and tried to act like that’s all there was to Obama’s energy policy. The “joke” was … this is OBama’s energy plan, that’s all he’s got, isn’t that stupid, what a retard. The “joke” was totally dishonest.

In reality, Obama’s energy plan is much more comprehensive. It includes proposals to increase conservation and efficiency, proposals to prevent market speculation from driving up the cost of energy, proposals to prevent market manipulation, proposals to develop alternative energy and train workers in alternative energy fields, and on and on.

So in essence, the repug’s pretended that OBama’s energy plan was something that it wasn’t and made fun of it. They couldn’t take on the real Obama, so they created a cartoon they could go at instead. But the truth never stopped the repugs and their oil agenda before.

And let’s talk about Obama’s tire/tune proposal. Experts say it could save 292,000,000 barrels of oil a year. At $120 a barrel, that’s 35 BILLION dollars a year. It’s about 15 days worth of US oil consumption per year saved with one simple proposal. Imagine what we’ll get if we start adding the rest of Obama’s proposals. IT’s a common sense proposal by Obama that could pay huge dividends.

What if we gave $1,500 tax credits to service stations and tire dealers who install nitrogen compressors? There are about 200,000 service stations in the US. If we could get about 1/3 of them converted, or 67,000 between them and tire dealers so that we get everyone on nitrogen and maintained at the right pressure (nitrogen is a larger molecule that leaks more slowly than ambient air, is cheap, plentiful, and nonflammable) we could reap the 35 Billion dollars per year in oil savings at a cost of $100,500,000 in tax credits plus some public interest advertising. What’s that, about a 35,000% return on investment? Ok, my numbers are rough but you get the point. In the short run or long run, greater efficiency will do more than drilling for oil could ever do. Obama is smart enough to see it and is smart enough to make it part of his energy platform.

This is classic False (Fox) New Channel reporting. When fair and balanced includes calling a factual rendition of an advice that has helped me added an extra 10 miles to each tank of gas I buy—ranting, can you please tell me what unbalanced and unfair reads like. Did you all never watch the video where Obama claimed as much oil could be saved by inflating tires properly as could be produced by off-shore drilling?

No?

They’re mocking the claim that tire pressure is a real solution, that can “save just as much” as more domestic production can produce. Nobody doubts that proper tire pressure saves gas. It’s how much gas Obama claimed that it would save.

If you look at the numbers, it’s not even close…

So mockery is in order.

This tire pressure thing is so symbolic of this whole campaign—McCain attacking without thinking, and coming off as the groughy old tired man that he is.

Can you even for a minute believe that any board of directors for any mid-sized or large company would for a moment even consider this guy for the job as President and CEO? He’s seven years past mandatory retirement age for federal employees, doesn’t know how to turn on and operate a computer, finished third from last (out of 895) in his college gratuating class, admits that he doesn’t understand the economy, and makes glaring gaffs on a daily basis.

He wasn’t very good when he was young, and he is certainly not suitable for the job he’s running for now. Get out the brooms-this thing is going to be an Obama and Democratic sweep in November. Change is in the air!

Comment by Jerry Allsman

Is Obama actually saying that under-inflated tires are causing the lack of processed oil supplies?

Obama sounds as if he actually thinks the few people with under-inflated tires are causing the problem. While the Obamites flock to the defense of their candidate, do they really believe a tire gauge would solve the supply and demand problem that is only going to get worse.

One major hurricane knocking out supplies in the Gulf would wipe out any effect that tire pressure might have on already existing supplies. Tire pressure doesn’t make much difference if the U.S. has no oil to put into those few cars with low pressure.
It sure would be nice to have an alternative source of oil along the West Coast and Alaska frontier.
But, with Obama I guess all we can do is “hope”?

I’m a 68 year old Viet-Nam veteran who had always thought of John McCain as a hero of a bygone era. Now I see him as a short tempered, insensitive, and very ignorant person.

I have an automobile that usually gets about 20 mpg. I took Senator Obama’s advice and raised the tire pressure from 32 psi to 38 Psi, which the tire company said was fine to do- and my car now gets 23 mpg. Thats about a 12% saving. It worked.

Comment by Zachman

Wow, you mean you all just now started making sure your tires were properly inflated. I’ve been making sure my tires have been properly inflated for years now. Not just because of gas prices but because improperly inflated tires wear out sooner. I’m glad Senator Obama enlightened you on how to save gas. I hope the years of ignorance were not too costly for you.

Can any of you tell me how much power a wind turbine generates when the wind is not blowing? I find my greatest electricty needs are when the winds don’t blow as it tends to be extremely hot. Oh, I forgot only the rich should be allowed to run AC during the summer since they can afford to pay carbon offsets. I guess us hard working people who pay taxes will just have to be at the mercy of the winds for our power needs.

Comment by Collin

I would say it is petty to poke fun at Obama, or anyone else for that matter, over a comment such as that. It is petty and generally not effective at making themselves look good which should be the main priority. If you think that Obama’s plan is weak then promote your plan better and address specifics about your rivals plan that you disagree with.

Personally I think that the energy issue is no where near what should be number 1 on Americas priorities with the exception of the overall need for energy independence needing to be addressed. But if I had to pick a more frightening plan, as Eleanor from TX did, I would say that Obamas is the more frightening. To say that in 4 years time he will cut emissions and meet goals that I can only see happening if new laws were made that were so radical as to force people to abandon old cars and adopt new energies and make sacrifices that they are not willing to make. The reality is that it is probably just empty promises and there is nothing for any of us to fear.

To focus on this comment about a tire gauge any longer would be a waste of time. Don’t try to prove the validity of the comment with numbers because the numbers games can always prove both sides. Given my current fuel usage That comment means that I could save $120 annually but in my case I doubt that my tires are low enough to save a penny and my guess is that the majority of the cars out there are also at or very near the proper level. Looking at the big picture there would probably be less savings nationwide then what is spent in toilet paper in the White House each year. It was a weak comment that was not said to push an entire plan.

What the comment did show is that Obama had nothing better to suggest and that is what McCain was trying to draw attention to by poking fun. Lameness on McCains side, Lameness on Obamas side. Lameness on your side for reading this and thinking it matters.

I hope all the GOP folks that are saying this information is stupid, non-sense, etc are just saying it to be trolls and combat Obama supporters on here.

And for christs sake! This wasnt a main point of his energy plan, it was what a single person could do to help. And its said that we could save 2/3 of what is available on US waters (oil wise) if everyone maintained proper pressure levels (by your administration)

Comment by Gary Mac

Of course keeping your vehicle in good working order will improve mileage, but that does not address the real issue of our dollars going to foreign oil producers who want to do us harm. We need oil and lots of it for the next 20 years or so until cleaner forms of energy come on line. Drilling for oil everywhere that it is available, using our shale oil deposits and making synthetic fuel from coal is the best way for us to survive long enough as a country to be able to transition into other forms of energy. You can wish that this is not so, but it is the reality.

By the way, nuclear energy is the cleanest, least polluting method available for producing large amounts of electricity. The technology for reusing spent fuel rods through reprosessing leaves very little radioactive “waste” and that waste doesn’t take centuries to decay, but only a few decades. The hysteria about nuclear waste disposal is way out of proportion to the actual problem of disposal. Nuclear power plants are increadibly safe! Our country is blessed with plenty of nuclear fuel, actually we have so much of it that storage of it is a bit of a problem. Instead of storing it we need to be using it. Unfortunately the ecological loons have hoodwinked the public and made cowards of our politicians, thus we haven’t built new nuclear plants in about 30 years. I would gladly exchange oil exploration for nuclear generation, but we need both.

We need all forms of energy and new technologies for using energy. Until we can transition to new technologies, we must continue to use oil in larger amounts. By the way we are sitting on at least a couple of centuries worth of coal and we must use it as well.

It would be nice if our politicians and for that matter our citizens could get past the name calling and political game playing to address our energy problems in a reasonable and logical way.

Neither the far left loonies nor the far right crazies are correct on the issue of energy. America wake up and think! Our very existance is at stake!

All of you guys that are trying to prove with stats that the tire gauge thing will actually save so much oil are missing a couple of very important facts in your calculations: 1) Your calculations that it would save a percentage of fuel equal to the amount of oil we would get from drilling now does not take into account that there are a great many of us that already keep our cars maintained- including proper air in the tires, so you need to at least assume that 30 percent of the population has correct air pressure………2) You don’t take into account those people that cannot afford new tires, so they drive on old leaky tires and have to stop by the gas station every day or so to air them up (assuming they can find a quarter to put in the air pump) so take off another 15-20 percent for the tires that simply will not be kept at the proper air pressure………………………………….Now, we are down to only half the fuel saved- and that’s assuming the other 50% of the population will suddenly see the light of Obama’s great wisdom and change their evil ways to do as KING OBAMA declares………it ain’t gonna happen…..so

If Mario Andretti, I hope I spelled his name right, a world reknown racecar drive can be seen on national television for years telling people to maintain tire pressure, and people still are not doing it. What makes Obama and his affiliates think that the public is going to listen to the government. Are they planning to pass laws and prosecute to the full extent for low tire pressure? Also say all Americans do listen and over inflates their tires. O’boy, we’re saving money now!! But wait? Why are the tires wearing down faster in the center? Of course, then the blame goes from Big Oil to Big O Tires. What do we do with all of the used tires across America. Also, as far as alternative fuels go, if you as a farmer or rancher that has ever had to depend on wind power for water, the wind doesn’t blow much in August. If nitrogen is the way to go, which sounds good for smaller type vehicles, why don’t we push for cars that run on nitrogen cells and make it where average Joe, like myself, could legally and affordably put a nitrogen compressor in my shed or garage to refuel my car while I am sleeping at night. Besides, I think it would be kind of cool to drive a nitrogen bomb down the highway or a freeway in Dallas traffic. As far as trust in TB Pickens goes, I think his real angle is making money. Don’t think he’s out to save the world or the nation. It wasn’t too long ago when he started trying to figure a way to get water from the Texas panhandle piped to Dallas. If you know farming and water conservation you know that will sure put a drop on the water table for families and farmers in this part of the country. By the way Obama did say that the tire pressure and tune ups would make up the difference for NOT drilling off shore. I have a hard time believing it. A person can make statistics look any way he or she wants them to.

What scares me most is not the candidates, it’s how angry people seem these days, and how nobody is willing to cross party lines and listen to each other and respect each other. The polarization is really sad. Life is not in black and white.

There isn’t a single expert that will back you up on what you said. What you probably MEANT to say was that it would reduce GASOLINE consumption IN OUR CARS by three to four percent. Even if you meant “oil consumption” in the generic sense, it wouldn’t even be close to a 3-4 percent reduction of our total consumption.

Comment by good morning iraq

If anyone really thinks that properly inflated tires are going to solve our oil problems they are delusional. This will not make a dent in our energy problem. It is so funny to read all the posts of Obama supporters trying to validate this remark of his. I am not a proponent of drilling but do feel it is a small piece of the solution. Biofuels so far have cost more than they have saved by making the price of food go up because the farmers are having to pay more for feed. Wind power is too iffy, solar power is bulky and expensive that pretty much leaves us with drilling and nuclear. The whole idea is to decrease our dependence on oil from foreign countries. And a windfall profits tax is just plain stupid. The cost will just be passed on to the public. Why not charge the drug companies a windfall profits tax, they have a much higher margin of profit. Obama is against drilling and then he’s for it, wish the guy would make up his mind. I trust McCain much more to do the right thing as far as our national safety and our oil dependence problem. The two problems are intertwined.

This whole Energy thing is crazy and what it reallly boils down to unfortunately is the fact that the only thing that kept Oil prices low in the U.S. vs other Countries was Sadam because he kept the Saudi’s scared to the point that they knew that they had to keep the United States leadership happy in case Sadam made his move to take over Kuwait thus they needed the U.S. Military as their bodyguard and now that we removed Sadam our bargaining chip is gone and Saudi’s could care less about the U.S. and i am not saying we should not have taken him out
If we do not drastically reduce our dependence on foreign oil we will see $6.00 per gallon gas real soon and tire pressure will not solve this problem.
Nobody this year has said anything about winter grade vs summer grades of gas which will lower prices almost immediately.
What about 55mph speed limits?(20% better mileage on avg)
Most people also do not realize that most State Gas taxes are percentage based meaning that the higher Gas prices go the more per gallon each state makes.
If Tesla in California can make a total Electric Car that is faster than most Production sports cars and can go 300 miles on a charge then why are the big 3 auto makers not doing the same thing?

To Luke Gilmore,

If the great one (Obama) is correct about tire pressure (that it will make up for drilling), than why does he want to tap the oil reserves?

Your not to base tire pressure based on the tire companies tire pressure listed on the tire (this is usually max pressure anyways to prevent blowouts), but by the automobile companies recommendations. Americans have been through this a few years ago with Firestone Issue, and I believe Americans monitor tire pressure more now than ever before (except when the filling stations use to check it for us). Firestone, Goodyear, NASCAR, NAPA Auto Parts have been advertising this for years now. Actually the nitrogen filled tires will also help improve fuel efficiency. See Obama is right about keeping the correct tire pressure, but how many Americans are already doing this. If 50+% are already doing this, then there is no real overall savings. If people are doing everything possible, then they are not saving money on fuel; only the people that don’t take care of their cars will start saving money on fuel that is if they start taking care of their cars.

No one is arguing that tire pressure won’t help (no one argues we shouldn’t make everything more efficient); what John McCain is saying is that tire pressure alone will not lower your gas prices down to $2.00 per gallon. Drilling for oil will, and drilling places extra oil on the world market, thus lowering overall prices. If you don’t buy that theory, look at corn prices, ever since more and more cars started burning ethanol, more ethanol plants started popping up, especially in Iowa. Now these plants are buying a bulk of the feed corn, thus raising prices of corn for food and cattle, thus higher food prices. This is economics 101: supply and demand.

Over inflating your tires can cause issues of premature wear on your tires, along with other suspension issues with your car. Replace tires more often; use oil to make those tires (called polymers, which come from oil). You’ll pay more down the road for additional wear and tear on your vehicle, and then you will save in gas. Besides, if most Americans would buy the tires recommended by the automobile manufacturers, they have tested and designed their cars for specific types of tires, people would have better performing cars. Too many people buy the cheapest tires for their cars, and this actually causes a lot of damage to the car, especially the suspension. Bad suspension also yields bad gas mileage. All tires are not created equal.

I think Americans need to get a clue about oil in general; oil is used for more than gasoline! It is used to make plastics, pharmaceuticals, tires, other industrial chemicals, the candles you burn, other types of fuels for planes and factories, and the list go on and on. All these prices are also going up!

I wish John McSame would take this electon seriously! Instead of tire gauges and Paris/Britney ads, maybe he should come up with an agenda! As much as his campaign resembles a Saturday Night Live episode, he may want to consider talling about issues.

Paris Hilton just ate McSame’s lunch….how funny is his ad now?

All you fools talking about “the smoking/bellowing/whatever nuclear plants”:

I assume you are refering to the hyperbolic towers. You know that the “smoke” you are complaining about is just steam from the cooling towers, right? Steam, as in water vapor. Learn something before you open your mouth….

Also, if you take Obama’s advice and air up your tires some more, do a little experiment. Take some chalk and draw a straight line across your tires. Drive in a straight line then stop and check the chalk lines. If the chalk is gone, your tires are inflated properly. If the chalk is gone on the edges, your tires are underinflated. Finally, if the chalk is missing from the middle of your tires, your tires are overinflated. If adding a few psi may overinflate your tires while netting a 3-4% increase in mpg, would you rather lose that small increase in fuel economy or buy $800 tires 10,000 miles sooner because they are bald in the middle? Just some food for thought.

I wouldn’t vote for McCain on a bet since he flipped on almost every issue that made him a “maverick.” But Obama and the Dems have to start listening to scientsts, not activists, on the issue of nuclear power plants if they want to win in November. Combining all our rescources including nuclear, solar, wind, oil and, to the smallest extent possible coal, must all be used if we are to solve the energy problem in the quickest and most painless way possible. Excluding any option is just playing politics.

“What makes Obama and his affiliates think that the public is going to listen to the government.”

I believe that American people will band together to help. I believe in my country. I believe in my people. I believe in America.

Only those who are ignorant and uninformed would think that passing out tire gauges is funny. McCain and his minions sound more and more like grumpy old men. We in the grassroots of the Obama campaign don’t have time to stoop to second-childhood games (by the way, you go through second childhood once senility sets in). I wonder what the donors have to say about the obvious waste of money it took to buy all of those gauges. Even if the expenditure was only $15.00, some people don’t have THAT much to invest in their gas tanks just to go to work. C’mon. Let’s get real.

If you save 3 percent in fuel costs, at $4 per gallon, this is a savings of $0.12 per gallon. Why is this ok with Obama, and the gas tax holiday, which will save Americans $0.28 per gallon not ok with Obama?

Hey RNC, why don’t you drop McCain and bring on T. Boone Pickens to run in November. He’s more in touch with REAL change for weening our country off of oil and safe alternative energy than your proclaimed savior for November……..get a clue!

Comment by Jeff Hopkins

I don’t know about everyone else but I have the air checked in my tires everytime I get an oil change.
So I would not be considered a part of the 3 to 4% oil savings. How many people are driving around with improper tire pressure ? Sounds a little like Carter’s ideas…..

His statement about the tire guage only makes sense if everyone is driving on under inflated tires. I don’t think that is the case. He is pushing simplistic ideas as solutions to a complex problem and in the process is treating us as if we are too stupid to understand. Everyone talks about Republicians being in the pocket of big business. How about Democrats being in the pockets of radical groups that want to see America fall. If it wasn’t for the money he gets from these groups, I wonder if he would still be trying to double talk his way around the issues.

Democrats do not want, can not allow, any improvement to the price of oil now,
it is their plan to “MAKE” oil cost as much as they can right now. If there were to be any improvement they are afraid, very afraid, the Rebublican administration could recieve credit
for that decrease… So pELOSI’s plan is to make the American people bleed and hurt now,
in order to force them to buy into the “empty democratic bag of promises” code named” change.

Do not be fooled, force her to do her JOB, of American Congressperson, She works for you…
Tell her what WE the People want done. Explore, Drill, and recover oil HERE in our country
NOW!
Take the DEMOCRATS finger out of your eye, It will stop hurting…

Tell Congress they can not take your freedom…
Tell the Democrats to go to work and DO something …
Tell Congress We want to drive on our own oil, not terrorist’s…
GO TO: —-http://www.congressmerge.com/onlinedb/index.htm
you can email every congressperson and senate member from there…
Tell them you can see them.
Let B.O. know where he can store the tire pressure guage!

Only an elitist, out-of-touch candidate like John McCain would ask his supporters to cough up $25 for a measly tire pressure gauge.

The Obama campaign is offering a John McCain doll for only $25. He wears a baseball cap, geezer sunglasses, and tiny Ferragamos. But wait, there’s more! If you call within the next fifteen minutes, you’ll receive the Wife Cindy and Sidekick Joe Leiberman dolls and pay only shipping and handling.

The John McCain doll has limited range of motion, but he wets his Depends, and when you comb his ha
