McCain camp mocks Obama energy plan

PHILADELPHIA, PA — The McCain campaign is urging voters to make sure their car tires are properly inflated to save gasoline but only half-heartedly.

Campaign adviser Mark Salter distributed tire pressure gauges labeled “Obama’s Energy Plan” to the press corps aboard the campaign plane this morning.

When Obama first suggested last week that Americans could save on energy costs and gasoline by making sure their tires are filled to the correct PSI, Republicans latched on to the remarks, and have not let go ever since. McCain campaign surrogates have been passing out tire gauges across the country during the last few days insisting that tire pressure amounts to the Democrat’s entire energy policy.

For his part, McCain said he agreed with Obama’s suggestion during a town hall Thursday but has also mocked the Democrat’s line as symbolic of his energy plan.

“We need oil drilling and we need it now offshore and we need it now. He has consistently opposed it. He has opposed nuclear power. He has opposed reprocessing. He has opposed storage. And the only thing I’ve heard him say is that we should inflate our tires. So he has no plan for addressing the energy challenges that we face,” McCain said Friday during a Panama City press conference.

Obama is announcing his own comprehensive plan today with a wide range of potential solutions to the nation’s energy crisis but don’t expect that to stop Camp McCain from hammering home the tire press suggestions over and over again for the next three months.

UPDATE–The McCain campaign is offering you your own Obama tire pressure gauge for a $25 donation. See the latest email to supporters from Campaign Manager Rick Davis below.

CAMPAIGN EMAIL:

McCain Team -

Americans across the country are feeling the effects of high gas prices and our need to expand domestic oil production.

John McCain says we need offshore oil drilling and we need it now. Senator Barack Obama has consistently opposed offshore drilling - calling it a “gimmick.” Senator Obama’s solution to high gas prices is telling Americans to make sure their tires are inflated.

Today, I’m asking for your help in putting Senator Obama’s “tire gauge” energy policy to the test. With an immediate donation of $25 or more, we will send you an “Obama Energy Plan” tire pressure gauge. Will simply inflating your tires reduce the financial burden of high gas prices on your wallet?

It’s clear Senator Obama has no plan to address the energy challenges we face as a nation. He has said no to offshore drilling, no to expanding domestic drilling and no to nuclear energy. He has no plan to reduce our dependence on foreign oil.

John McCain is prepared to lead our country as president to break our dependence on foreign oil with real solutions. John McCain believes we should lift the federal ban on offshore drilling, enabling you to decide where we drill for oil.

But John McCain won’t be able to enact these policies without your help in electing him as our next president.

Please help us put Senator Obama’s energy plan to the test - donate $25 or more for your very own “Obama Energy Plan” tire pressure gauge.

Thanks, as always, for your support.

Sincerely,
Rick Davis
Campaign Manager

P.S. Our next president’s energy policy will need to reduce our dependency on foreign oil. John McCain believes we need offshore drilling now. Senator Obama’s plan is calling on Americans to check their tire pressure. We’re asking for your help in testing out Senator Obama’s energy plan. With your donation of $25 or more right now, we’ll send you a tire gauge to test for yourself, Senator Obama’s “tire gauge” energy policy.

Let’s see……use Obama words and create a gimick, sell it to the American people who will buy anything and Mcsame pocket $$$.

Is that’s McSame answer to our problems!!!!!!!

NO to McSame!!!!

were ca I find a tire pressure gauge? I want to help the country by checking my psi pressure on my tires. This is the cheapest way for the country ? The best economic plan so far from obama and his team.

Comment by Lew

I would rather pay the evil oil companies for oil than the evil terrorists in the middle east. How about you?

Comment by Mr. Big

I want one of those air pressure gauges! BO’s so called “energy policy” is a joke; what a moron! LOL!

Comment by Lone McCain Blogger

Better than suggesting you go shopping to fight terrorism.
Actually something that people can do, like turning off your lights and using more efficient light bulbs or turning down your thermostat in winter is now being mocked? This will backfire on McSame, you are insulting the general public now.

Comment by Arby J. Brown

This is funny coming from a campaign and a candidate with no plan and no clue. John McBush has nothing to offer - except mabey tire gauges. As big oil continues to rape the working class, McBush’s only solution is to help them pull down our pants.

Comment by Rudy NYC

McCain is starting to come across as condescending. Obama pointed out that McCain has nothing to talk about days ago. No response yet.

Comment by barbara

Make a donation to McCains campaign and you can get a tire gauge saying “obamas energy plan”
Best $25 I spent in a long time.

Comment by Arby J. Brown

What John McBush wants everyone to forget - as he apparently has - that he has done nothing during his 26 years in Washington to address energy issues.

Comment by Tom Kaye

Apparently the Republicans think conservation is foolish. Better to drill, drill, drill, drill, and drill more. Give more money to the big oil companies.

Yeah, inflating tires to the proper level to get better milage is stupid. Shutting off lights is stupid. more insulation in your house is stupid, using alternative energy is stupid.

Yeap the Republicans are right . . . they think we are stupid enough to give the oil companies all our money.

Comment by Angry American

If Obama’s Energy Policy doesn’t scare you maybe S2433 will, see for yourself. Obama wants to give $840+ Billion Dollars of US tax Payer money to the UN to fight poverty world wide. I for one don’t need look too far; I can see Poverty on my own street. Maybe that 840 Billion can be better spent her in America.

Comment by Jackie

McCain needs to grow up and stop with the 4th grader antics. Obama laid out his energy plan today and it is just what this country needs. Maybe bazillionaires like McCain can afford to find humor in twisting and distorting the serious issues of this campaign, but the American people need serious answers for serious issues.

Comment by Keith Mitchell

Can you get one of these without donating to the McCain campaign. I want one but I’m not for McCain.

I can’t believe you are so stupid to think this ancient cadaver you are touting can have any chance to reach even the dust from brilliant Obama’s shoes. There is no young person who even considers voting for this angry old man.

Comment by wvu2743

I laughed my head off when I heard this. Obama really believes that keeping vehicle tires properly inflated and getting regular tune-ups will offset our current and future oil needs?!? He really believes that optimal tire PSI will offset billions upon billions of barrels of recoverable oil (trillions if you include the shale oil, coal and natural gas deposits the US has that he is also against turning into fuel)?!? Wow. All one can really say is wow…and scary.

Check out this story:

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,206439,00.html

“With or without nitrogen, proper inflation is the key to improving gas mileage. Motorists can improve gas mileage by 3.3 percent simply by keeping their tires properly inflated, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.”

3.3 percent more gas just by checking pressure? Sounds good to me.

Comment by pat

this old fool is just that! does he think he is being funny? i am 63 years old and i know that you can get better gas mileage on your car with your tires having the proper amount of air as well as saving wear and tear on your tires. there is nothing funny in that because it is a common sence thing that all of us should know.
i am so sick of old McCain making jokes and thinking he is cute with all his cheap ads and quotes about obama. he is as senile as anyone his age has ever been and his snears when he says obama’s name makes me sick!
he has nothing to bring to the table to help our country except to keep our men and women in uniform in wars for the rest of the old coots life. i am sick of this idiot and would love to see him just fade away! romney was a much better candidate. at least he had a plan for the economy.

Comment by Eric

How can I get a few dozen of these pressure gauges just to distribute?

Comment by onthefence

I don’t see how anyone can have a clean energy policy without including nuclear. However, I did improve my gas milage by 3 miles per gallon by putting 2 extra pounds in my tires.

Comment by Will

I’m sure glad that the McCain camp finds the struggle of the American people funny. First that stupid Paris and Brittany ad, then the Moses web ad, they spend a lot of time yucking it up I’ve just got one question? What is he going to do to help me and my family, beside’s give more tax cuts to oil companies that don’t need it. I was with the old McCain, this new McCain seems a little to much like McBush.

Comment by Jack

Can I get a free one, it’s seem that McSame has no plan….. at least I can use the tire pressure gage as a start for conserving energy.

Comment by virginia mcmahon

McCain is going to mock himself right out of the White House - never seen such
juvenile actions - well yes we did, George Bush comes to mind. McCain is obviously enjoying his second childhood.

Comment by Stacy

The facts are that McCain’s desire to drill in ANWR and in currently-restricted areas off the coast of the USA won’t really affect gas prices or affect our dependence on foreign oil. Keeping cars tuned up that are in bad shape and inflating tires to safe levels that are now low will save as much oil as we might find with that increased drilling. So, the facts are that Obama’s ideas do just as much good to decrease foreign oil consumption as McCain’s, plus they’re a solution that doesn’t require that we drill in sensitive areas!

Comment by robert

Just as I have never seen such hubris on the part of the Obama campaign, I have never seen such creative and witty devices such as tire pressure gauges to diminish an opponent. Surely the prize for strategy and shear political one upmanship goes to McCain. May the best party win.

Comment by Character Counts1

McCain does learn his lines well, like a trained monkey should. So well. that he repeats them, but only if they don’t exceed a certain length or complexity. Drill, drill is about as ineffective a solution to our energy problems as “bomb, bomb…” was. Barack Obama made a very good suggestion. It wasn’t his entire plan, and John McCain knows that. Poor John, he’s desperate so he finally decided to drop his pretense about “honor” when he took a page out of Carl Rove’s playbook. We all liked you John when you were known for straight talk, but you made the mistake of putting on the wrong set of clothes for this race, and now you walk and talk just like the duck that ran this country into the ground. Sorry John, Obama has it all over you. We need change!

Comment by Sue Hal

Sen. Obama’s proposal is nothing new-tire pressure was a solution back in the late 70’s. What is new about his campaign and change? The Republicans are finally having some fun and putting some ‘pressure’ on the Dems.

Comment by Zach

The McCain campaign is increasingly becoming a team made up of people that behave like kids. John McCain cannot will the election by focusing his attention on negative criticisms of Obama, rather, he should know that this sort of campaigning does him more harm than good. It makes people believe that McCain has really grown out of being able to function as a US President by allowing his campaign continue with such negative adds against Obama.

Comment by Larry Clifton

Obama has an energy plan?

Comment by the southern dem

Obama should be mocked on the tire pressure issue for it over simplifies a very complex and chronic problem which requires immediate attention. Indeed, Obama’s use of such a device mocks the very people who have to pay high gas prices and to whom he has NO ANSWERS…other than rob the countries reserves. No nuke power since he is not sure he likes the disposal issue…seems that other nations have tackled this issue somewhat…storage on site can work until Obama is convinced there are better way. But fundamentally…Obama had not one problem with the actual cost of gas…$3,4,5 or more…it is that it went up too fast…..this is the very reason Obama just does not get it on drilling or nuke power. Even if everyone went to electric powered cars tomorrow the power grid could not take the drain…so where is he going to get such…..solar/wind…absolutely not…..only zero carbon nuke power could provide this essential energy source….BUT OBAMA IS AGAINST NUKE POWER !!!! So much for the support NOW and in the near future for the voters/citizens.

Wow, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a campaign a puerile and lost on what really matters as the McCain campaign over the last few weeks.

I need no more evidence that this would be an extension of the Bush administration - he’s even hired one of Rove’s proteges.

Come on America: don’t let Rovian politics bite us in the butt again.

Sen. Obama will do whatever he has to do to get votes. He like most politicians is a liar. Does anyone really believe Obama has an original thought? It became obvious a long time ago his “handlers” are doing the talking and thinking. I am a 44 year liberal Dem but I am crossing the isle. When he is on the television I turn it to mute. I have been doing that for the last 7 years.
Pretty speeches, empty head.

Comment by tj stelten

What Obama said about tires is a fact. If your tires are not at recommend inflation, it does reduce your milage. This is a fact. As Obama has said, it will take many things to ease the burden of high gas prices and its only a responsible action like keeping tires inflated that can help. Its McCain thats out of touch!

Comment by Sean

Listen up idiots. Do some of your math and research. There are 250,851,833 registered cars in US according to a research in 2006. Hypothetically, lets say about only 100 million of them are actually used on the road everyday. Assume, Inflated tires and tune up saves .5 gallons of oil…just 0.5 and I am sure you will agree its more than tiny 0.5 gallons. 0.5 gallons per day on every car means 50,000,000 Gallons per day. A barrel is 42 gallons(US). The whole US could save 1190476 barrels per day. Remind you I only used 100 million cars as opposed to 250 million and gave a saving value of 0.5 gallons. Should we save 1,000,000…1 million barrels democratic way over 200,000 republican way? I dont know are you stupid enough to chose 200,000 over 1 million.

which I endorse. And by the way, it includes tax breaks for investing in emerging energy technology.

Comment by Dave

Here we go again, the ones who write this should sit down and see Obama’s New Energy speech and get facts right. Well I guess they won’t do so because they would have nothing bad to write about.

Comment by Ed Sommers

McCain loves a good joke, especially when the jokes is on his opponent. Of course, it’s easy for McCain, the husband of a multi-millionaire beer heiress, to laugh. Their reaction to $4.00 a gallon gas might be to give up Premium gas and put Regular gas in their Hummer.

Obama’s suggestion that voters make sure their tires are properly inflated, is a good suggestion. Putting the right amount of air in your tires can help you get better mileage. There’s no downside to proper tire inflation.

McCain thinks Obama’s idea is funny. McCain would rather drill, drill, drill. When you ask him why the leaseholders who are not drilling in the US areas where they could be drilling, he ignores the question. What he knows is that “Big Oil” wants to drill offshore in the US. Big Oil isn’t very worried about oil spills, the potential for an oil spill to destroy Florida’s tourism income, etc. McCain doesn’t mind that risking an oil spill in the offshore US involves a very minimal amount of new oil, and he doesn’t worry about the fact that Big Oil would be under NO obligation to sell that oil to the US market. Let’s laugh at Obama and placate Big Oil. Let’s keep Dick Cheney and George Bush happy as long as we can. Let’s keep electing people who will work against the best interests of 99% of US citizens, call their policies patriotic, and thereby earn the support of the large number of imbeciles that elect these criminals.

They are trying to make Bush look bad by not voting on or passing any legislation and it has made their approval rating even worse than his. The McCain camp is losing credibility faster than ever with these puerile tactics that are a lame attempt to distract the American people from the fact that McCain doesn’t have the answers. Wake up America: don’t let Rovian politics bite us in the butt again.

What is McCain doing? He keeps running ads in favor of Obama. He’s wasting time and money. He should be talking about the issues that matter like low taxes, security of the people, gas prices and the economy. Obama gets enough free press. Every time I see Obama he is in front of 10 or 15 thousand people and now McCain seems to be help further that image. That’s nuts….

Comment by J-dub

Checking your tire pressure is a very useful and energy saving tip, but it will not create a large enough effect and we can’t just focus on one solution. Nuclear power is going to be essential to invest in now. As more of the world develops, demand for uranium will increase. By investing in our infastructure now, we can begin the process of reasserting ourselves as the greatest nation in the world. However, we haven’t built a nuclear power plant in the states since the 1970’s and it will take time to get started. In the meantime, release a portion strategic oil reserves just to make everybody a little more comfortable. As any economist will tell you, a percieved future supply (i.e. offshore drilling) will cause people’s blood pressure to drop and allow prices to drop. The comment that “everytime you pay at the pump you fill big oil companies pockets” is ludicrously obvious. Let me add my own: “Everytime you buy a sandwich at the grocery store, you fill the grocer’s pocket.” The profit margin (gross profit/total cost) of oil companies is about 8%, that’s well below average. Stealing “windfall” profits from oil companies is just about as reasonable as saying “were going to give low-income families a share of the interest on national debt.” It seems to me that the push for alternative energy is already taking place without government sanctions. The sales of domestic vehicles have dropped so low that some of the major companies are looking at maybe one year of remaining cash to carry them through. American’s want more effecient vehicles and the companies will pay for it if they don’t deliver cost-effective fuel-effecient vehicles.

Because of the machismo political posturing of both candidates, neither one is willing to consider the sensible solutions that the other suggests.

Comment by Charles Wilde

We recently changed our old van tires to new high mileage tires. Highway mileage went from 21 miles per gallon to 26 miles per gallon. This is over a 20% improvement.

Checking tire pressure or updating times will give us lower gas prices faster than any drilling plan. Other means for energy independence still are required, but paying attention to your tires is by no means a silly or frivolous idea.

Comment by Michael from Atlanta

The argument for Offshore drilling is weak. We don’t know the cost for that drilling. We don’t know how mush oil there is to be gotten, if any?

Besides, there is no oil shortage. If there was a shortage, you would see gas stations running out of gas to sell. There would be long lines at the few gas stations that had gasoline. But this not the case. Gas stations are happy to sell you as much gas as you want for $4.00/gal.

The reason for high gas prices is simple greed by the Oil companies who have had record profits during the past 5 years. Their greed is making the price of everything to go up. But that is of no concern to them. All they care for is THEIR bottom line.

His Karl Rove campaign believes that they can continue to “mock” Obama, but what it tells me that they should close Harvard and rid of it the label of being one of the US most prestigious universities, if Obama as a fellow student, and Head of the Law review, is being portrayed as style and no substance.

They had better be careful.

John McCain is at it again. Of course this could save and make a small dent if all drivers followed this advice. Of course they won’t. All energy/auto experts will tell you this for a fact. No.it won’t take care of problem, but so far no one can. Oil company support/protection of interests from government is well known. Present Bush Administration is known as the “Oil Administration.” Oil is feeling very good. Right after John McCain reversed position and announced he was for off shore oil drilling, and would back GOP bill he received large oil donations. Oil Companies and politicians have always had connections. Real sad Americans are not protected better from tactics like this.

I think John McCain is the only one silly giving out tire pressure gauges. Hope his attack campaign now backfires big time!!! This really demonstrates how far John McCain has gone!!

Please, people, take your blinders off and REALLY listen to Mr. Obama and think and question what he says, and when he says it. He is a shallow, smooth talking politician that wants to avoid saying anything with substance, because, just like President Clinton before him, he only says something publicly if it can be changed, retracted or modified easily after wards depending on people’s reaction.
I cannot take him seriously, and it embarrasses me to see the media machine kowtow to his game and cater to his adoring but voluntarily misguided and bamboozled fans.

Nando comment that McCain like a trained monkey, that keep repeating himself. You have to realize that McCain is 70’s some years old and he is limited in his thinking. On top of that he don’t no more education than the average person. And anyone who running for commander-in-Chief, should he lest have a MASTER DEGREE and be no older than 55 yrs. old, because when you past 60 yrs. old your mind begin to slow down quite a bit.

Now take Senator Obama, he is the right age, quick on the draw well educated and down right brilliant. He would be someone American could be proud of, and He have show us he can represent us well. This man graduated from HARVARD LAW SCHOOL, anyone would be a fool to want someone in the White House that have no more education that John McCain. All my children could qualify if that all the education you need to be a president.

My husband been in the army and he has all the honor that McCain has from navy, but that don’t qualify him to be a president. But I guess if you have some with money to bag you, you can just about buy any seat in any organization you want.

But just remember, what a fix we are in now. With McCain it will be even worse.

Shows how misguided and misinformed McCain supporters are.

Having properly inflated tires and a well tuned car can increase full efficiency by 7% or more. That is, if everyone followed Obama’s advice, we would be using 7% less oil at the points. Offshore drilling on the other hand, will provide maybe 1% relief in the next 5 years, and most likely less than 7% in the next 10.

Thanks McCain for helping support Obama with the tire pressure guages!

Put in ugly bulbs that LAST ABOUT 2 WEEKS AND COST MORE THAN TWICE AS MUCH AS THE REGULAR ONES, and if you break them you will probably get sick, especially your kids. I have been using these bulbs and my electric bill remains the same. It does not make sense.

I will not freeze in the winter, we live here in wisconsin and believe me you have to keep your thermostat as warm as possible with these huge northeast winds,. Another ridiculous idea from the environmentalists and Obama. He can freeze if he wants to but I will not. We do not have the luxury of living where it is warm.

Dont tell me how to live and let me know how Obama keeps his kids warm in the cold Chicago winters. His house is worth l.7 Million dollars. For never having had a real job, tell me how he can afford this. he is one of the dumbest men I have ever heard.

It would take 100 years or more to get everything we own off of oil, our freedom depends on oil - what a stupid statement and these idiots believe this? What about airplanes do you want to be in an airplane that is run on solar or wind power. My God people use your own brains for a change Do you actually think we can run these stupid little cars on batteries on a trip without using electricity. See what I mean it sounds stupid. If the battery fails, do you know what a new one will cost??? Study this stuff.

Our country was founded on freedom and I will not let anyone turn this country into a Stalin run socialist country. We have enough oil in this country for over 200 years. Do your research and please dont do the environmental nuts site. Even global warming is such a farce. IT IS NOT HAPPENING!!!!!!!
aBOUT 15 - 20 YEARS AGO THEY SAID WE WERE GOING INTO AN ICE AGE.
THINK FOR YOURSELF PEOPLE, DONT BE SUCH PUPPETS.
Unless, you are the same color as Obama then you will not do any honest research. You will just vote for him no matter what. It is the same old Obama JIVE. And you know it……

Do the math, Obama is right and it is cheap (relatively speaking).

Drilling off shore is dumb for a number of reasons. Most importantly, we could spend the money for developing alternative infrastructure for energy solutions that are now mature enough to use. This has the added benefit of making the Middle East as unimportant as it should be.

That said, I can’t bring myself to vote for either of these candidates. Obama is the lesser of the two evils, but from now forward I’ve decided to start voting my beliefs rather than settling. In essence I am removing a vote from the Republican column where it has been for the last 20 years (and likely placing it either in the Libertarian or Constitutionist column — that less than 1% column).

These parties are the same — they just have minor disagreements about who to redistribute tax collections to.

BTW — With rare exception, Republicans claiming to be fiscal conservatives deserved to be laughed out of the room.
