Obama vs McCain - The Urban League
ORLANDO, Fla - Talk about a different reception.
Barack Obama rocked the crowd at the Urban League’s annual conference, in spite of a speech that lacked the fire and brimstone of his rallies. Obama still drawing 4 standing ovations from the packed house.
Flash back to Friday, when John McCain spoke to a room with 1,000 fewer chairs and a lot less energy. The crowd, while respectful, barely seemed to realize McCain was there.
It’s not exactly a surprise that the largely Democratic, largely African-American organization would have more enthusiasm for Obama, but it certainly was a pretty visible contrast. Obama used the rapt audience to paint McCain as even more out of touch with the Urban League’s issues than they might have thought - bashing him on everything from his opposition to regular minimum wage hikes to a housing policy that does little to address the mortgage crisis.
“I’m not going to assault Senator McCain’s character. I’m not going to talk about Paris or Britney,” he said. “I will, however, compare our two economic visions for the future” — which Obama said would be four more years of the failed Bush policies.
Indeed, Obama did take the extra step to avoid seeming personally harsh with McCain — even removing references to the Senator’s name from his speech. He referred to McCain throughout as “my opponent.”
But decorum didn’t stop Obama from bashing McCain’s policy positions.
On education: ” I recognize that my opponent came before you yesterday and attacked my record on education reform. This is someone who’s been in Washington nearly 30 years, he’s got a pretty slim record on education, and when he has taken a stand, it’s been the wrong side of the line.”
And on Equal Pay: “He says the reason women don’t get paid as much is different educational opportunity. Well that’s not right. It’s not true. Empirically, it is incorrect.”
The Illinois Senator took prepared questions from Urban League President Mark Morial; nothing on the recent charges from McCain’s campaign that Obama has been playing the race card.

What would you expect-nothing new-same old, same old. What would be news was if they had not givien him a rousing reception.
It’s pretty Obvious that the Urban League would endorse anything Obama says. After all, we already know that 90% of blacks in America are voting for Obama simply because he is black. What a double standard !!!
Let’s focus on what’s best for America, instead of trying to elect a black President, at any cost.
Well Obama you do not seem to have a very large amount on the table to show what you have accomplished or even tried to acconmplished. I don’t understand why you feel McLame is another Bush, Is this the only way that you can feel secure with your lack of abilities. Bush’s polices in many areas have failed miserably and McLame voted against many of them that did pass hmm just like you did.If the only thing you can do is degrade McLame and his 30 years of public service with out giving facts to what and how you are going to do things. All I hear from Obama is WE NEED CHANGE and we will do it with these programs. How are these programs going to be funded, without new taxes. Obama needs to stop trying to play the star and deal with the issues at hand unless he is going to become one of the issues.
wow what a surpise “not”
i am very surprised that anyone actually bothered to show up to see mccain.
As a democrat I think Obama has a cult like following in this election. People really don’t know why they support him but still do. I ask people what he has done to get the experience he would need to be the leader of this country but no one could tell me one thing. Remember change is promised in every election but rarely happens. Obama has no vison when he talks and no plan that is good for this country…He just talks alot about nothing… I vote on experience only so for this democrat it is McCain and I am not the only democrat that is going with McCain.
Obama shift on off shore drilling you bet. By election time He will have won the Iraq War, solved the Energy Crisis, be winning in Afganastan and He’ll have a plan for everyone to be employed and getting raises and free healtcare. He will save us all from certain contastrophy and if you believe that, your no different than the Urban League giving Him standing ovations no matter what he says. As He said Himself, He’s what the world has been waiting for. Santa Claus. He just looks different than the other Santas.
How come you have four quotes from Obama but not one from McCain?
Can you say, “In the tank?”
Come on. We know you can do it.
It’s easy.
“In-the-tank”
Once you’re flaming, you might as well come out of the closet. You’re not fooling anyone.
Well, how about “groupie” then?
Come on, Aaron. You can do it. It’s easy.
“G-R-O-U-P-I-E”
“I’m a flaming groupie for Obama!”
There! Doesn’t that feel better!
McSame is jealous of Obama. He can’t draw a decent crowd so he strikes out at Obama. Shame on you McSame!!!
Obama for America - Yes We Can!!! America is very proud of how Obama represented us overseas. We Love you Obama, don’t let McSame shake you. He lacks substance.
Now, did anyone REALLY expect anything from the National Urban League other than rousing support of Obama…one of their own color? I sure didn’t. They continue to play the race card against whites and anyone else who would deny continue to call them anything other than the ‘victims’ of this oppressive country. ENOUGH ALREADY! I’m sick of anyone who plays the victim to get more entitlements, handouts, etc. Grow up and get to work to fix your own problems instead of accepting handouts. No, I’m not white. so you can’t call me a racist. Obama continues to make promises to give away more money to anyone with their hand out. I work 7 days a week and no one gives me anything. I take care of myself and expect other Americans to do the same. Stop whining!

Obuma did not plat the race card he played the race victim card. As far as the Urban League Please their god is Obuma
Wake up America. If you vote Obama in, America will no longer be American. Stop for a minute and look at Obama objectively. Don’t think Dem or Rep, think his plan, experience, FRIENDS (remember, even your mom would not let you hang with certain kids growing up because of their influence on you). Get over the hype, and get down to truth, or America is doomed!
Wow, I’m impressed. The blacks gave Obama standing ovations. This is news??They would do this is if Obama showed up and didn’t say a word. Meaningless story.
The REAL reason Obama doesn’t need to be President can be found On this site:

As usual from the left-sided press we see nothing of what Senator McCain said. You quote Obama exclusively letting the whole piece reflect badly on Senator McCain. These people want a welfare state where everything is provided for them and they don’t have to make any decisions. That is what a socialist state does and that is what Obama wants. They are not going to applaud capitalism because that would mean they would have to rely on themselves to produce income and stand up for themselves.
For once, I would like to see the press actually compare the candidates positions in a detailed and honest manner. Of course, that would be hard to do with Obama because he changes his positions so often. In fact, I hear he now kinda thinks he might be in favor of drilling.
Finally, why is Obama afraid to debate Senator McCain even though he has invited to do so?
Surprise suprise, urban league worships the chosen one. Yawn……
Little do the attendees of this conference realize those they claim to represent will suffer most under the heel of an Obama Administration. Tax policy, rationing of health care and Cap N Trade policies will harm minorities and single mothers the most. Too bad emotion has replaced reason and logic with thier membership.
Hi,
another he is the chosen one the second coming what a surpise he has a big bunch of groupies he is a star. Of course he has flipped on the off shore drilling what do you think the meeting with rock star pelosi of the house was all about he wanted to tell her he was going to flip again, just to get more votes he and the dems will put off doing any drilling tell after the election and if he wins he will change his mind again. Wake up people the chosen one will give all your tax dollars to the welfare moma and terrorist.
When will McCain realize that latinos are not the ones who are going to get him elected and stop pandering like a prostitute. He is such a disgrace. It is apparent whoever is running his campaign does not want to get him elected.
Black people are all the same. They would vote for an eggplant if it was black enough because no one ever accused them of being intellengent.
are you really surprised that he drew a crowd he is the chosen one the second coming. of course he changed his mind about drilling off shore he is affraid he will lose the election. With the meeting with pelosi he discussed the fact he was getting up in front of his worshipers to let them know he is for drilling off shore. but not to worry when he is in the white house he will not sign the bill we need to stop drinking the obama koolaid….
BO talks a lot but never says anything other than making a joke about something. No town hall meetings with McCain because he would have to speak without the notes and he doesn’t even know what he thinks about what we are facing as a nation. Ever notice he doesn’t remember what he has said yesterday and that’[s because he is an mind speaker not a heart/mind speaker. He often reveals his heart when he tries to speak without the notes or prompter.
A simple question for the Obama groupies…What has Obama accomplished in his lifetime that makes you think he can lead this country in these very trying and difficult times? He has been a Senator for about 3 years, a year and a half of which he has spent on the campaign trail trying to convince his very naive worshipers that he can change the world. Just because he says he can, he is not the little engine that could… it will take a bit more experience, and a bit less charm to be President of this country.
Come on people wake up and think! Obama is all about himself, not this country. He’s got one thing on his mind and its his own agenda. Think and look at what has influenced his life. Given his long association to Rev. Wright you know he’s got to have a mixed up view of this country. Consider this, who do you want leading the wellfare of this country. Someone who spent 7 years in isolation and tortured for his country, or someone who’s spent 7 years brainwashed by some minister who’s got nothing good to say about the country he’s lived in and profitted from. Obama won’t even have a US Flag painted on his plane. Do some research and check this guy out. SCARRY!!!
Most of Obama’s followers are racist, and probably very emotionally driven rather than fact driven. I surmise that most of these people need diversity training..and probably a few lessons on what Obama really stands for..but of course how can you teach someone if there’s no material.
Come on people think! Obama is all about himself and his own agenda. Who do you really want looking out for the wellfare of this country? A man who spent 7 years in isolation and being tortured for his country, or a man who was brainwashed by Pastor Wright? Do you really think Obama wasn’t influenced by Pastor Wright?? Do some research. This guy is SCARRY and Obama is too!
Lets see, a black forum, with a black speaker being asked prepared questions by the Urban League President Mark Morial. Oh and did I happened to mention, he just happens to be black. Give me a break Barrack, be a man and try a town hall forum.
well, I hate to tell anybody my partial theory but could it be he is Black? You know, 99% of Blacks in this country are voting for him just because he is Black. If he were a New Black Panther he would get the votes….that’s how they think. Pretty funny, no one can call mccain rascist because he has a black skinned daugher he has raised since she was a young baby. Ha!
Oh Come on people. Find me some Christian Evangelist that isnt supporting McCain just because hes white. There are so many whites out there voting for McCain simply because Obama is somewhat black. At least now there is a counter-balance to that stupidity.
Id like a honest reason behind why him being a little black makes a difference to anyone. Maybe people are just mad that hes alot smarter than them, who knows….
John McCain Shirt
I read through the comments on this piece titled Obama vs McCain - The Urban League by Aaron Bruns.
The comments are heavily anti-Obama. Do you folk get paid for this by check from the Republicans or do you get cash in a brown paper bag?
Why shouldn’t Obama get a huge welcome from the Urban League? He’s the first black major party candidate in….forever. 43 white presidents and you people are saying the Urban League shouldn’t be happy this time around? Just try to think how you’d feel if there had been 43 black presidents and you finally had a shot at electing a white one.
hahahahahahaha…u guys are all sad…….
hehehehehehe…you guys are very sad people….god bless America …..cause we dam sure need it …….
Bottom line: I voted for Barack Obama in the primary and I will vote for him again in November. His restraint before the Urban League is typical of the class and grace with which the junior senator from Illinois conducts himself. So refreshing in a politician. As for the arrogance charges - “hello!” he wants to be President of the United States! Obama all the way. Inspirational, tough, pragmatic.
To the “Osama for Obama” crowd……I would like to point out that, by his own admission, John McCain has never been online…has never sent an email. Osama can blow up half the world from a laptop in a cave in Afghanistan. He’s probably for McCain. McCain just never got the email…:D
Why is there not more coverage of John McCain ? I thought it was to be equal. ????
i am so sick of the dems………I want President John McCain !!
Obama thinks that Americans are stupid. I guess I was one of them that voted for him during the primaries. I was so enthused about his speeches that I was campaigning hard for him with all my families…Should I say that Samoan families are huge. But then the dust and smoke settled, I saw something. NOTHING. This guy is actually full of nothing. Just sounded good in his speeches for changes. The turning point for me was his stubborness to admit that the surge of troops had worked in Iraq, I still gave him some thought. But then when I found out today that now he wants to drill offshore after continuously rejecting that idea when he found out that the polls show 75% of the people are for drilling off-shore. That was it. I have had enough. Well McCain, you’ve got at least 23-24 votes from the mase family that voted for Obama in the primaries. Wait till I get a hold of cousing and second cousins and enlighten them.
America, you need to look beyond that charisma. I made that mistake once. I will not do it again.
Since several peoples comments below insist in name calling - I will join in. All you dems are so certain OBUMA is going to win. I hope you will not be to upset when he doesn’t - cause all yours and OBUMAS arrogant, presumptuousness will not fool the America people - OBUMA can offer us the world, change, change, change - because he is the ONE!!!
Please get real - I live in Chicago - your great community organizer was mediocre at best and has no experience worth mentioning.
Business people of America - would you hire OBUMA as your CEO - I do not think so.
Empty suit nothing more.
Save us from this disaster vote for Senator McCain.
@Gina “After all, we already know that 90% of blacks in America are voting for Obama simply because he is black.”
So how do you account for John Kerry who got 87% of the black vote in the 2004 election?? I guess as they say “when goat dung wants to roll, it will roll uphill (Translation: you’ll make anything fit your beliefs, even if it’s patently and absurdly false)
Obama is a big Joke!
He probably make a good comedian or even a preacher.
Too Funny!!! Of course they gave him standing ovations. It’s as plain as day or should I say black and white. I hope and pray people wake up and vote for what’s important, not skin color. Heck around here there’s an awful lot of biracial children I see every time I go shopping. What are they??? The black card always comes out and they prefer to be labeled black because they can get more handouts from government.
To say 90% of African Americans are voting for Obama because he is black shows a total lack of understanding of this demographic. Some are voting for him because he is a democrat some because of his ethnic origin. But what of the 10% that will not vote him? Are they voting for someone else because he is black? Ah it does not make sense. They are voting as they always vote for whoever the can trust and make them feel good about themselves. Some women voted for hilary because she is a woman some people voted for bill because he was young and handsome. We all exercise our right based on what is right for us. So who is the best candidate the black or the white gentlemen well this the context of how some want the vote framed…..if it comes to that there is only one winner and millions of losers. I am not voting because I am not an american but I am a European observing the us from afar and I am concerned. Concerned that the us will regret another 8 years of bad choices……
What would you expect for a candidate who opposes affirmative action?
We are a polarized nation and based upon my reading of the comments here, that is not going to change any time soon.
Lot of racist comments on here. What about specific comments on policy. Admitted, they are somewhat difficult to pin-down at times, but you can’t say they don’t have policies. Most teachers are against the no child left behind for good reasons, but that’s a long discussion that probably few have thought seriously about.
As for experience, in my book thats weighted lightly. I think senators should have term limits. The longer people stay in dc, the more beholden they are to special interest, the less things get done. Really, i think we need someone with a brain for a change, that can explain policy positions and convince me that their vision is a good vision. Does anyone think the negative campaign from mccain will facilitate bipartisanship in the legislature should he win the election by degrading his opponent?
Why do we as Americans allow the Politicians to segregate us into the lowest possible descriptions then labels us Voting Blocks?
.
Yawn… More pandering by the two panderers. LULAC, La Raza, NAACP and The Urban League- none of whom, either singly or collectively, represent the majority in this nation. Just another empty promise chump stump for votes.
