Day 2: The Democratic Party Meets to Draft Platform and Hears from Struggling Americans
CLEVELAND –
During day two of the Democratic Party’s meeting to write their platform, average Americans told the drafting committee about the everyday struggles they face. Over the almost three-hour session, twelve people from Ohio, Indiana, and Pennsylvania spoke about economic troubles, jobs sent overseas, health care, rising food and gas costs, poverty, education, energy independence, and “green” jobs and technology.
The committee heard from the speakers before sitting down to actually write the platform – a mission statement that expresses the most important issues to the Democratic Party. The platform will be presented before the entire committee next weekend in Pittsburgh before being voted on at the Democratic National Convention, which begins August 25th in Denver.
The current back and forth between Barack Obama and John McCain was mentioned when committee member Patricia Madrid went after John McCain for his “Celeb” ad calling it “ridiculous”, especially after hearing the daily problems of so many Americans. She added that it would be struggling Americans who determine the outcome of the election:
“This morning I heard Senator Obama on television say that is going to be people like you that are going to determine the outcome of the race, People that are angry and this morning I also heard him say why is John McCain concentrated on Paris Hilton and Britney Spears? Your testimony makes his ads all the more ridiculous,” said Madrid. “I hope this year it is going to be people like you that are not going to vote against your economic interest again because it is you who are going to determine the outcome of what we are going to do in this country about health care, job wages and things that matter to you.”
During yesterday’s meetings Senator Hillary Clinton was not mentioned—even though some of the members here were supporters of hers and spoke on her behalf during May’s testy DNC Rules and Bylaws Committee meeting. Today former top health care advisor to President Clinton and committee member Chris Jennings mentioned her while thanking the speakers for sharing their stories, “Senator Clinton often talked about during the campaign about working Americans being invisible to the previous administration and you have given them a voice. “
Like Friday’s session, speakers took the opportunity to hit John McCain while praising Barack Obama and putting their hope in an Obama presidency to solve their struggles.
Many of the speakers lost their jobs to outsourcing and have seen factory jobs sent overseas something they see as continuing under a McCain presidency, “Our good paying and respectful job are being sent to Mexico so. . .employers can avoid paying decent wages and benefits,” said David Landrum a factory worker from Indiana, “It is crazy to me that John McCain has pledged to support every trade deal under the sun knowing how much it has hurt my family and others like this. I want to say that a visit to Bloomington would change his mind, but he keeps going to our communities like ours and saying the same thing that jobs aren’t coming back and he supports free trade at any cost.”
Other laid off workers blame the current administration for their lost jobs and low salaries, “A lot of people are working low wage jobs with no job security…John McCain supports free trade deals that have created this miserable economy leaving so many hard working Americans between a rock and hard place,” said Misty Wells a laid-off GM worker from Ohio, “I could never vote for Senator McCain on issue after issue. He follows in President Bush’s footsteps. Things are too bad for another term of Bush. Senator Obama seems to know what we are going through and I am excited about watching Obama stop Republicans who have destroyed so much to people like me. “
Not all of the speakers were Republicans. Marcie Wozniak from Pennsylvania is a registered Independent who is voting for Obama because she does not see the current administration helping the middle class, “We just can not survive another Republican president like Mr. Bush or Senator McCain who supports bad trade deals, privatizing social security,” Wozniak continued. “I haven’t heard any long-term solutions for lowering gas prices from him either. I really do think that Mr. Obama is the best candidate and is going to lead us in a new direction for the next 4 years.”
Much of the discussions focused on bringing jobs back to America through “green jobs” and “green technology.” Committee member Allan Katz pressed the importance of these jobs to help the economy and the environment, “There are going to be a lot of jobs if we decide to do what we are talking about doing which is reduce our dependency on foreign oil and truly develop an economy that is based on innovation in green energy renewables and the ability to do things as in a lot those areas in terms of from the inside management. There is a whole host of jobs that can’t be exported to China.”
The session ended on a light note when Shawn Grimes, who works at a Saturn hybrid plant in Ohio invited both the presumptive Democratic nominee and the entire committee to visit his factory even suggesting everyone should jump on a bus right now to tour the facility getting a laugh from both the committee and audience.
The meetings continue this afternoon and the platform will start to be written by the members.

I read the following as part of a blog on the web: Is it true?
“…US Law very clearly states: ‘. . . If only one parent is a U.S. Citizen at the time of one’s birth, that parent must have resided in the United States for minimum ten years, five of which must be after the age of 16.’ Barack Obama’s father was not a U.S. Citizen is a fact. Obama’s mother was only 18 when Obama was born.
This means even though she had been a U.S. Citizen for 10 years, (or citizen of Hawaii being a territory), his mother fails the test for at-least-5-years-after-age-16 prior-to Barack Obama’s birth.
In essence, Mother alone is not old enough to qualify her son for
automatic U.S. Citizenship. At most, 2 years elapsed from his mother turning 16 to the time of Barack Obama’s birth when she was 18.
His mother would have needed to have been 16 + 5 = 21 years old at the time of Barack Obama’s birth for him to be a natural-born citizen.”

Senator Obama is now changing his tune about offshore drilling and like
most Politicians making promises. The latest is $1000.00 tax rebate, wow,
how about that for a carrot for leading the horse.
I have to hand it to the media, when the Democrats took over two years
ago gas was $2.19 a gallon and we had a tax break. Now gas got over
$4.00 a gallon and we lost the tax break. The news media doesn’t make
it noise about that fact, but they are hard evidence the Democrats are
taking us to the poor house with them in their SUV’s.
This is why Obama will be the next President. He is the “People’s President.”
We love you Obama - Yes We Can!!!
Go OBAMA, lets get rid of all the negatve fro Republicans. They are runnig scared. That is why McCAin does not like how OBAMA looks so presidential and he loooks like a old bitter warrior.
I don’t think it is the Republican’s fault gas is so high. It’s all the Democrats and their nutty ideas and pork. They can’t even be expected to give us energy legislation. Boooooooo Nobama Pelosi
Go McCain 2008
[...] incorporating ideas from both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. The drafters also took into account the stories of struggling Americans that spoke this morning, concerns brought up in over 1,300 meetings with Americans around the country, and various groups [...]
Lets advance all forms of energy, in a high tech, enviro safe way, build state of the art energy facilities, and become exporters of cheap clean energy, and wipe out the deficit, employ and educate the poor, and be optomistic about the future of this great country of ours that is willing to help everyone else in the world before helping ourselves. T. Boone is looking to make a profit on this situation, cool, lets all profit. Environmentally sound, creative solutions. Broad based portfolio. Two thousand windmills look like eye pollution to me but lets go for it. One offshore oil well is too far away to be seen, from the beach. All of this stuff sucks, and freeways, and commuting, but we all love our country and need to live, work and support the kids. We can do this, we gotta speak up when we cant afford to get to work!
Wake up people, Obama wants a socialist America. If Obama gets elected you will have yourselfs to blame. Ask how Obama is going to pay for all his programs. He will say anything to get Elected
obama inspires me to vote for John McCain!!!
I am a union member and I am not happy with this election. We have vote for which candidate stinks the least. I can’t support either parties candidates. Obama hasn’t done anything and you can’t trust Mccain either. Both want to give illegals more rights than citizens. Well I still have Barr and can look forward to 2012.
Be that as it may Howard, You can be sure your money (dues/extorsion) is going to a candidate by the truckload. And you have nothing to say about it.
Obama is a joke, we will see who wins the election, they keep forgetting about the old, tired, bitter, holding onto their guns, and faith Hillary supporters who are still out there just waiting until Nov., we can’t wait we are being very patient just waiting to vote on that big day. I hope I get to see the Obama’s supporters faces after that Nov. day, I even took off the next day in Nov. so I can watch all the newscasts that will on television and watching people trying to figure out what went so wrong. LOL Obama supporters.
IM SORRY PRISCILLA, OBAMA IS NOT THE PEOPLES PRESIDENT, HIS TIES WITH LUDICRUS, REVEREND WRIGHT, THE WEATHERMAN TERROSIST, AND MANY OTHER ASSOCIATIONS LIKE BELONGING TO A THEOLOGY GROUP THAT BELIEVES JESUS WAS BLACK AND A PALESTINIAN. SO THIS LEAVES ME AND MILLIONS OF OTHERS OUT.
There simply is not enough time for Obama to EARN THE TRUST OF THE VOTERS and there is too much at stake to just hand this election to the republicans! Our COURTS, ECONOMY, ENVIRONMENT, INTERNATIONAL STANDING, WOMEN’S RIGHTS…. are at stake! THIS CALLS FOR A CREATIVE SOLUTION. OBAMA MUST NOMINATE HILLARY AT THE CONVENTION. If he serves two terms as HER VP, perhaps he can then be elected to the awesome position of President of the United States. Think what an exciting convention that will be! Think of the media coverage! Think how wise and courageous Obama will appear. The republicans will not be able to adjust their strategy and Dems will win the White House! yeah!
