McCain defends ad, says race will play no part in his campaign

RACINE, WI - John McCain defended his new television ad and expressed his disappointment in Barack Obama’s campaign rhetoric Thursday.

“I’m very disappointed and race will not have any role in my campaign, nor is there any place for it. I’m disappointed that he’s used (race),” McCain told reporters before takeoff for Orlando, when asked about the statement put out by his campaign manager today accusing his Democratic rival of pulling the “race card.”

“It’s very clear what his comments imply–anyone who looks at those and previous comments that he has made. I think it’s very clear that he has. I’m very disappointed and I repeat it wont be part of our campaign,” he added.

Asked if he thought his “Celeb” spot is below the belt or overly negative, McCain said the spot is “all about” energy, and retorted that it was Obama who first turned the campaign negative.

“Senator Obama has continuously attacked me, but the point is that we’re drawing differences between our two campaigns, what we stand for and believe in. That is clearly what the ad was all about it. It was about energy and it was about taxes,” McCain said. “He’s run negative ads on me continuously and I might point out for the record that he was the first. I think it was an ad that points out the differences between our two plans of action that we for America.”

During his town hall meeting in the Badger State, McCain was also asked about the “Celeb” ad by an Obama supporter who questioned whether he was going back on his commitment to run a clean campaign.

“Let me say that there are differences and we are drawing those differences. And I’ve said earlier I admire his campaign but what we are talking about here is substance and not style and what we are talking about is who has an agenda for the future of America,” McCain said. “All I can say is that we are proud of that commercial. We think Americans need to know that I believe that we should base this campaign on what we can do for Americans here at home and how we can make America safe and prosperous and that is the theme of our campaign.”

The questioner, Wendy Chavours-Freeman, a 23-year old student from Mississippi told Fox after the event that she supports Obama but came to the town hall to listen “to the other side.” She added that she believes the new ad is “below” McCain.

obama you ARE an Arrogant, Radical FRAUD - but - you are NOT qualified to lead our contry and that is the reason you will never be elected. STOP making every issue about RACE - you are dividing our country. Maybe now would be a good time for you to step aside - for the good of the party - and country.

Keep Up the Good Work McCain

Molly - I think you should speak for yourself. You have idea other than name calling. Unfortunate!

McCain liar, you flip flopper, could you at least say something with substance. What is your message? all that comes from your campaign is whining. We do know for sure you dont want women to have equal pay, you have friends that say women should enjoy rape, you have birth control issues, you have trouble remembering who is who, or what you said, you have a bad temoer, and you say you are a leader? pleaaaase!!!!!!!! WE WANT A NEW LEADER WITH NEW IDEAS not the same old stuff. And to benefit a few, times change and we want change.

Comment by Kay B. Day

The Democratic Party has done more to divide this country, and to tarnish our image globally than any other entity in all of American history. Many of us who abandoned the DNC will not vote Republican because we idolize a candidate like many would idolize a deity. We will vote GOP because the DNC has basically abandoned mainstream America. And it didn’t just begin with Sen. Hillary Clinton.

Comment by Ed

Obama arrogant?
Republicans and McCain ooze it. Sickening, isn’t it.

Comment by EMJ

Hillary looks even less like “those other presidents” and yet she got more popular votes than Obama. Maybe experience rather than looks are more important??!!

^ Dividing our country, right. If i’m not mistaken it’s already divided. Why argue with another ignorant bush/mccain supporter?

Funny, I always thought making ads that are based on racism was racist. Silly me. silly democrat that thought republicans were ever above the mud.

Why are two completely different issues combined into a single headline/story? Weird.

Molly,
A fraud is someone Like McBush who won’t allow his POW info to be revealed. To label Obama as arrogant because he can gather peoples attention like no other is a testament to his ability to motivate people and get them excited. If you notice McBush is the one who can’t stop talking about Obama…Obama isn’t think about him. McBushes is platform is to scare people about Obama, rather than highlight his strengths or policies and the reason for it is that he can’t. He can’t because he is in lockstep with Bush and the same old policies. Gimme a break, dividing our country, McBush will do more to do that!

McCain is a whiner. He sounds like a little boy constantly telling mama that his smarter brother is bothering him. I can’t wait for a debate.

Comment by Jack

Yeah, it should be about Brittney Spears and Paris Hilton? Come on, it is a stretch to think Obama is playing the race card, but its NO stretch at all to see that the McCain camp is doing everything it can to try and attack Obama. Even the Paris add is a lie. Obama never said anything about energy costs and raising them at all, and certainly not in the context it puts it.

McCain should be ashamed not proud. How pathetic that a possible President would be “proud” to run an ad with Spears and Hilton that way. Just childlike.

Comment by Eliot

Desperate attempts by McCain using Karl Rove tactics to try and beat McCain. What a hypocrite, the man who condemned them when he was the brunt of the attacks in 2000, has now decided to use them. Look at McCain making this about race by saying Obama made it about race.

Smart Americans know better.

McCain you are so out of touch with what Americans need, and have yet to actually talk about what YOU will do. All the polls agree.

Keep up the great work Obama. You are what this country needs.

Comment by J

Molly - you ARE not ABLE to SPELL …. so I’ll take your comments with a grain of salt…. also - how would the Democratic nominee stepping aside help out the democratic party?

By McCain crying about the race card he has already brought up race and made it a part of his campaign. For crying out loud he should just step up and say, “All of you who are bigoted and hate black folks, I am your candidate.”

ohhh the irony….

Just as McCain and his wife both stated - this campaign will be civil, he will not go negative. Well, he did go VERY negative. He says he won’t play the race card, but he will - just wait. I am putting this statement on my calendar so I can refer back to how many days it took him to reach that level.

Electing the candidate endorsed by Hamas and Iranians mullas will be disaster not only for US, but for the whole free world. McCain we are with you!!!!!!!!!! You have to kick the ass of this cheap populist talker

Comment by John

What race card? McCain keeps talking about it and I keep not hearing anything about race from Obama, except that really good speech on it he made a few months back - that quote everybody’s talking about (”You know, he’s not patriotic enough. He’s got a funny name. You know, he doesn’t look like all those other Presidents on those dollar bills, you know. He’s risky. That’s essentially the argument they’re making”) seems like a totally realistic description of the McCain campaign to me.

I loved how McCain totally dodged the question about his nasty “celeb” ad, too - “all about energy”? What on earth do Paris Hilton and Brittany Spears have to do with energy? Or Obama, for that matter, who graduated from Columbia and Harvard Law?? I mean seriously.

Comment by John Fredi

I lost all the respect I had for McCain. Obviously he cannot control himself. His campaign is becoming entirely negative. He does not keep up to his word, contrary to BO, when overcome by emotions (jealousy?) and that makes inapt at leading this country. I move to the cool guy who can take heat in his kitchen, away from the whiner. I will vote for Obama 2008

Comment by gabe

wow the McCain campaign is clearly grasping at straws. I watched the ad and it is NOT about energy the statements which were used by the MCC was taken WAY out of context (which the article doesnt even mention) read the script from the interview with Obama. Taxing energy is NOT part of his policy. I used to respect McCain as being a man who says what he believes, and one who is above school yard politics. Guess when it comes down to it , though, he is just like Bush/Rove. I just wish McCain would talk about himself instead of trashing Obama and doing this,” well he started it” BS. If he DID start it as you say, which i have failed to see, then you should rise above that.
Shame on you McCain, and here i thought you were a different kind of republican.

Comment by johnnowforobama

I was mostly uncommitted until the last few days when John McCain’s campaign totally blew it. I found his comments and ads to be disappointing and despicable. He clearly has nothing going on. A wet noodle, overboiled stringbeans, limp wrist, desperate housewife, a clone of George Bush. Thanks for making my decision easy.

I really do think that this is all very much beneath the John McCain I voted for in the primaries. I hope that he realizes that his attack ads are actually making Obama look better. This is the same way that Hillary Clinton lost the primary. She had it in the bag and then she got negative while Obama refused to do so.

John McCain is awfully close to losing my vote.

Comment by SusanP

Ha, and where did I read today that 90 % of Obama’s ads don’t even mention McCain. Probably one thing McCain is mad about. Maybe it was that NYT story today that takes McCain to task for the silly ad with poor Brittney and Paris.
Come on McCain, keep making ads like this one, show us all how “smart” you are.

What was I thinking to be reading news from this website? Racist Pigs!!!

Comment by Josh77

Molly I understand you’ve already made up your mind in this campaign and that makes it hard to view Obama in a positive light. Likewise I have made up my mind and find it difficult to keep an open mind. However, I would ask you to take what these politicians say with a grain of salt, they are both out to tell us whatever they think will bring them our vote.

This article is pretty sparse in the details area. The reporter only puts McCain’s words to print. I have yet to see Obama attack McCain or cast McCain in a negative light. I have seen at least 3 ads attacking Obama though. This appears to be an attempt by McCain to frame the issues as he would like them to be. This approach will not bring him any new votes as only his base believes what he says unconditionally.

So Molly here’s an opportunity for you, bring me some details, prove the truth of McCain’s words to me and McCain might gain an extra vote come Nov.

Comment by susie91246

As usual Obama and his klan is taking whatever any republican says his group is going to take our words and twist and turn then into something that they want it to be instead of what it is!!. First, nothing about race was mentioned in any McCain ad ever!!! Second and what is really funny ha ha !! is that when he retorted (obama) about the latest ad from McCain, that they should be debating instead of slinging (?) mud Obama is the one that refused to debate McCain at all!!! oh maybe one debate somewhere down the line…… yeah right and when will that be and where ??? probably on the Kennedy back porch lawn with nothing but the liberal media as lookers on!!!! LOL

Molly, move to Canada, McCain is spending time and money for nothing.

McCain has lost whatever respect I once had for him.

Slowly but surely, he’s proving that he’s just another politician who will say anything, and stoop to anything, to win an election.

Comment by daiZhen

Molly,

First, you should learn proper grammer and syntax. Second, McCain is too old to be President. I do not want a President who will be wearing diapers.

Comment by Geoff

You’d think that after experiencing the slings and arrows from the 2000 primaries, Sen. McCain would not stoop to the same sort of derogatory political adverts and whisper campaign that his minions have been promulgating. Then again, it appears that he’s hired the same folks and their brethren that skewered him in SC. Now that’s a curious flip-flop.

Comment by Tom

Two Hundred Thousand Foreigners gathered in the streets waving American Flags… scary isn’t it when it’s all because of An Arrogant Black Man who thinks he can be President. The sheer uppitness of the man is really hard to tolerate.

When was the last time an American politician inspired flag waving instead of flag burning?

At least 8 years ago, I’m sure.

Tell John McCain to please stop it!! I have heard enough of his lies!! McCain is running the “Karl Rove Playbook!!” Lie, complain, attack and attack!! This is an explosive man!! And this is a well known fact!!

My claims can be all proven and verified.

This long time Republican has had it. I don’t like who Republicans have become. And what they do.

RACE CARD - sure it has been used indiscreetly by John McCain. They have been testing the waters ever so slightly. No big outright claims, but have caught.

FYI I am a white, college educated female, retired so I have been observing closely for awhile. McCain is doing all so slyly. I almost smile, but it isn’t really funny.

I will be voting for Barack Obama.

Comment by linda

I will vote for John McCain….As far as I can tell Obama is nothing but an empty suit… but honestly, I am a bit disappointed in the celebrity ad and John calling Obama out on the race issue. I think we already know Obama is a bigot…he even shows disrepects his own white grandmother. Please John- live up to your best side and prove to the world that you can win without being sucked into non-political attacks.

Comment by Paul

“She added that she believes the new ad is “below” McCain.” Bingo! It’s really a shame to see John McCain running the type of campaign he is running. I am a democrat who was seriously considering voting for Mr. McCain, but his negative, petty campaign has really put me off.

Comment by Kathleen S Pearce

Molly. May I suggest you do a little or perhaps a lot more research about this issue before you register you opinion? A little knowledge is a dangerous thing as the saying goes and it is rather obvious that you are an example of this. Learn more, study more, read more and then present an honest informed opinion.

John, John, John…

I loved the former independent minded John McCain. Now that his advisers are all Rove-ites and right wing hate mongers, he has lost the luster and keen thinking that made him so attractive as a Republican candidate. DIVA ads don’t replace smart ideas. DIVA ads bring John down. John, stand up for the ideals you stood for in 2007. I’m losing faith in you if surround yourself in the old moldy smarmy politics of Rove and Bush.

Cripes that’s one of the biggest strings of pot calling the kettle black double-talk I’ve ever seen from a politician. McCain really is looking like another Dubya alluvasudden. More neocon “tactics” of repeating the opposite of the truth over and over again in hopes that lies get mistaken for reality. That McCain represents a third Shrub term is right!

McCain is fallng fast. He has negative karma, he is a Bush legacy, he is not the change needed to make the difference we are hoping for. He concentrates entirely too much on his opponent with negative ad’s instead of stating what he can do for the country, he is tied up with EVERY major oil lobbier, this can be verified thru the 1.3 million they have tossed him,, hmm, no wonder he is all offshore drilling, imagine that.
Like it or not, it’s Obama’s time.

Comment by June

This from the same man who has a subliminal message as a bumper sticker. When have we ever seen a candidate choose a black and white bumper sticker? Never. Black is the background and the white lettering McCain 2008 overlaps it. what happened to the yellow from his commercial? I guess he just wants us to remember he’s white and shining through the black thicket called Obama. Obama is as white as it comes. He attends a black church trying to get some blackness, but he was raised by Midwest old people. He’s as white as it gets.

Comment by Trawlerman

I eagerly look forward to the future debates between these candidates. I am sure that without the Swift Boat clones to do his thinking for him, that McCain will be shown to be the tired, uninspired, pathetic replica of Bush that he is. It will be such a pleasure to have a President who looks and acts Presidential, and who has the sharp mind necessary to deal with 21’st century problems.

Comment by Alicia

Why is it so horrible that McCain finally stood up for himself and let the general public know that Obamas’ campaign centers around a very clever marketing scheme?? God forbid that someone actually questions the fact that Obama is underqualified! The truth is that Obama will never actually admit what he stands for.

Comment by J. Davis

It’s shocking to see him engaging in the same negative campaigning style that was used to defeat him in 2000. You would figure he would have the decency to abstain from such negative attacks. But he is proving he will do anything to win, at all costs. By his reneging on his promise to take the high road, unfortunately, McCain has also proven that nothing is below McCain.

Comment by Bill

For years, I have always voted Republican. This year, I am changing. The Republican campaign ads are inaccurate, childish, and petty. If McCain thinks they are good, then I am sorry for him. He now longer has my vote. It took 40+ years to vote Democratic, but McCain finally pushed me over the edge.

MCCain is a shame for America. Spreading lies and rumours and trying to impose a smear campaign on Obama. McCains behaviour and IQ resembles the one of a 5 year old.

This speaks for itself ….

Obama has been playing the race card and I am so sick of him! I have been saying for months that he is arrogant. Everytime I see his face on T.V. I change the channnel. He makes me sick! So the media elite pundits got their candidate, but the real people of America will have no choice but to support McCain. Keep up the Good Work McCain?

You mean keep up the negative attack ads? Or keep up promoting the war, even though it’s costing us 10 billion a month? Have you thought about where that money is coming from or what sending it to Iraq is doing for our economy? Or keep up making false insinuations? (Please check sites like factcheck.org) This is what we are looking for in our future leader?

People most likely to vote for John McCain:
Hard core Republicans that will vote Republican no matter what.
People that would like to see Roe VS Wade overturned.
Racists (Yes, I’m sure that you are out there. Just be honest and say that you are)
People with income tied to the Republican party and companies tied to the oil, gas and defense industries.

Personally I don’t think Obama is arrogant or radical or a fraud. Frankly he is running his campaign better then McCain and will probably run the Country better. He is also the positive candidate and respected more by the rest of the world. And I don’t think he is dividing our country, but the current Republican party certainly has. Vote whichever way you feel but make an informed decision!

Wendy, the student, came to hear what Sen. McCain had to say and she was able to ask a question. It shows that Sen. McCain is not afraid to face people who are opposed to him. She says that McCain’s ad is below McCain. The media has done a good job of convincing people that satire and truth are negative campaigning. This is truly a disservice to the public. Obama was just annoyed that Sen. McCain was able to come up with an effective ad using his speech in Germany-he wanted those scenes all for himself. Did Wendy also criticize Obama for his speeches implying that McCain and Repbulicans are racists?

Comment by Michael from Atlanta

If these personal attacks by McCain are what we are to expect when the 2 candidates debate, I see why Obama is reluctant to debate McCain anymore than he has to. No one wants to see this bitter old man rant. It is embarrassing a war hero stoop to this level. The only reason McCain is resorting to these attacks is he knows he has already lost the election on the issues. What honor McCain had is being lost by his recent attack strategy.

Comment by tee-florida

Obama playing the race card, thats so funny. If you don’t like him thats fine. But when you say he’s arrogant and an elitist thats a stretch. I think he is confident. That is what you need in a president. And lets be serious, we all know that there are people out there that no matter what Obama sais will not vote for him because of his skin color. McCain could make gafs, do stupid ads that don’t make sense and change his mind for the next 3 or 4 months but there are just some people that will vote for Obama because he is a Black man.

The Obama team is not being honest with itself. He has no comments about Move-On or the Plouffe Marketing bloggin legions–and their despiccable comments, nor the many liberals now infiltrating conservative media spinning a fairy tale of Obama–all created by emails/blogs from the campaign team–ultra swift boat blogs.

But one difference glares at you: that McCain is using the candidates own words to contrast the differences between himself and Obama–very unlike Rove who tends to invent.

Mr. Obama’s comments are no more taken out of context than McCains’ comments, and explanation of spending 100 years in Iraq by Plouffe and his marketing team…rh campaign team

You know…Obama may become the only President be elected by the internet, Google, blogs, and spam–by a slim minority of socialists who don’t understand our nations history–nor our nations traditions of freedom, liberty, personnel responsibility, and rewards–that have made it the most powerful and influential state in the history of mankind.

Thank God…real people still have to enter the voting booth!!!

I highly doubt you ever were undecided, and a lot of people like you that are spewing this garbage probably were for Obama long before this anyways. Question how much is the Obama camp paying you seriously, because it is public knowledge that he’s been paying bloggers to spam blog websites.

It is a fact that Obama has injected race into this campaign, McCain has to confront Obama on the lies. As to the debates stuff, remember it was Obama that is scared of Debating McCain not the other way around.

Obama just wants to be able to do pretty speeches that is nothing more than Liberal Kool-aid.

Comment by Rudy NYC

What Obama said in Missouri is no different than what he has been saying for weeks now. Ever since a success filled trip abroad by Obama, all of a sudden Camp McCain has changed tactics. McCain has been on the attack about any and everything that he can possibly say.

Obama caused the recent rise in the prices of oil and gasoline.
Obama does not want to visit the wounded troops.
Obama is not trustworthy and unpatriotic.

Obama has been stating that the GOP wants to scare you for some time. He opened his speech before the Jewish Group last month saying pretty much exactly that. “…that guy Barack Obama is a pretty scary guy…”

Mccain had the race card played against him in the 2000 election, he wasn’t going to let it happen again. It was clearly playing the race card compared to what Obama said it June about what the repub’s were going to do to him.

I have seen BILL say that he is going to vote Democrat on numerous blogs. He must be a democrat posing as a Republican. I’m a unoin independent and I am voting for the first time in my life, definitely not for Obama.

You people saying Obama is arrogant really have a problem.

The guy is presidential material, inpires respect and leadership to leaders of the world, american people…MCCain looks like NOTHING compared to him… He is the only one talking using WE instead of I…He is the only one saying he needs everyone to get involved, because it s impossible to change a country wihtout its people…AND HE IS THE ARROGANT ONE !!!
pls…

Im really starting to beleive that you people are only a bunch of racists who are bothered to see a NON-WHITE man standing like a man…In your mind, he is not staying at his place, in the back of the BUS…and Oh MY God, he is talking back with McCain instead of saying YES SIR !

we all know that 60 years ago, in america, a Black man called arrogant for wearing his military uniform, A black man could not talk about his diplomas, or even discuss his different opinion with a white men….Because even though he served as others, and did all he had to do , just like the others white people, some things were reserved only to white men. Maybe for some of you, even thinking of becoming president is arrogance, from barack obama’s part ! Hearing or even imagining people call him Mr president make you sick becuz in YOUR minds, he should be called BOY even if he is a 46 year old, well educated family man.

But you know what ? TIMES HAVE CHANGED ! If keeping his head up, talking, acting like a man makes him arrogant, then we love him arrogant just as he is !

God will punish you people for calling bad good. You people rather choose an adulterous man, a liar, a womanizer, an opportunist OVER a genuine man who deserves everything he has today.

God bless Barack Obama

No one believes McCain is not using the race issue and every other issue he can to discredit Obama. He is an awful man who is running a campaign that matches his character-ugly,nasty,old. He is a pitiful man and an embarassment to his Party. I feel sorry for the Reoublican party.

That is right Obama followers it is all the Republicans fault that BO stated things like his funny name, him being black. It was all Hillary’s fault in the primary even though BO is saying the same old thing. Even the media starting to catch on to his “card playing”.

It was Bill Clintons fault that Wright spewed hate sermons and BO speaks about typical whites, bitter, gun clinging, bible toting don’t like anyone who is “not” like them.

BO blames the economy on Bush’s failed policies, but fails to mention the Democrats have majority in both houses and have had it for almost 2 yrs, they can veto or override any vote Bush makes. So who is really the blame???

BO says tax holiday from gas would hurt this country not help the middle class but the democrats just got busted in Denver getting tax free gas.

He says offering offshore drilling wont help but just Bush announcing he lifted the ban on it reduced gas prices.

He makes comments like I have to work with these people( middle east) for the next 8 yrs. Not only in his mind has he been elected but he was also re-elected without there being one vote cast yet, lmao.

I love when he said as commander n chief he, and didn’t you love his concerts in Germany and makes a speech but forgets to add the concerts being part of it just like Portland Oregon.

Only an arrogant person would refuse to agree the surge worked and they were wrong.

McCain said after talking with people he realized that we (Government) need to do more to help people with gas prices that is why he now has an energy plan for the immediate and far future. Which includes all of the natural resources we have plus recycling spent energy all the way to increasing wind and solar power.

BO followers you say Bush is arrogant but refuse to acknowledge BO is just as bad if not worse after all he wants to start bombing sites in Pakistan even after speaking with the leader there and being told no! To me thats worse than what Bush did at least he went after a leader who threaten our country not one trying to work with us on terror. BTW if BO does bomb without permission it will be considered an act of war by Pakistan.

BO says he is what the world has been waiting for. Not America but the world now,lol

he tells people he has more or less won and acts like it but no one is allowed to call him arrogant?

Yep delusional and I will say it arrogant.

I was an democrat supporter now proud to be called an McCain supporter!

It seems that the only person who brings us the race card is OBAMA and his campaign. It is always after he is seen slipping in the polls. I have one question for them: IS THAT ALL YOU HAVE GOT? Where are your concrete answers to the dangerous problem with our economy? Why is one of your top bills dealing with Global Poverty, instead with a proposal to end the pain that the average voter is having in their economic lives. Lost jobs, unemployment, high taxes, lost homes, high food and energy costs; these are the items I want my potential President, House and Senate to be working on. I think our Democratic candidate, the House and the Senate have lost touch with the average American citizen and deserves to be replaced by someone who CARES about us and will work to solve OUR problems first and then work on the world’s problems.
