McCain camp accuses Obama of playing “race card”
RACINE, WI — It has gotten ugly.
The McCain campaign is accusing Sen. Obama of playing the “race card” for stating yesterday that the presumptive Republican nominee was engaging in fear tactics and xenophobia.
“Barack Obama has played the race card, and he played it from the bottom of the deck. It’s divisive, negative, shameful and wrong,” said McCain Campaign Manager Rick Davis Thursday, citing multiple statements by Obama yesterday.
“So what they’re going to try to do is make you scared of me. You know, he’s not patriotic enough. He’s got a funny name. You know, he doesn’t look like all those other Presidents on those dollar bills, you know. He’s risky. That’s essentially the argument they’re making,” Obama told supporters in Springfield, MO Wednesday in response to the tv spot McCain released yesterday.
In the new ad, McCain compares his Democratic rival to Britney Spears and Paris Hilton in an attempt to paint him as an empty suit and a vapid celebrity who lacks the experience and skills for the White House.
McCain Senior Adviser Steve Schmidt tells Fox that the campaign felt an “honor-bound duty to respond” to the Obama comments adding that “a lie unrebutted can become truth.” McCain was the victim of racial dirty tricks during the 2000 presidential primary when allies of the Bush campaign spread a rumor that McCain’s adopted Bangladeshi daughter was actually his illegitimate black child.
Schmidt said the campaign learned a lesson from the 2000 experience. “You must respond instantaneously and with all you got,” he said.
No response yet from Camp Obama.

Barack used the race card during the primary so why would it be any different now. I am sure it is not easy being black but that is not the only ism being used. Sex/age/ etc.
McCain is right all Obama wants is the spot light.Sure his soon to be nomination is history but all this other is nonsense.McCain never said anything about Obama not being like past presidents .He doesn’t have to we all know that.Obama can’t stick to the issues because he doesn’t know any.He wasn’t the only Congressman in Iraq but he LET himself be the center of attention.
Playing the race card? McCain, you are holding the deck!
This is how lies get out.
Black Americans have been hearing most of the anti-Obama arguments coming out of Camp McCain all of their lives. It is most often heard when you are turned down for a job.
I don’t know if he’s playing the race card–but reminding the public that McCain certainly is not racially prejudiced by adopting a non-white daughter is perhaps a good thing
If he thnks conservatives are pressing the need for Americans to be afraid–just look at the evidence out of the candidates own mouth:
-A fuel/energy tax to pay for renewable energy (which will be passed to the consumers) at the same time the fuel, utilities are already passing on increased fuel charges, and costs of research and creation of renewable power–especially wind and solar. A double whammy to our pocket books when we can least afford it.
-An emphasis on removal of our troops from Iraq prematurely–at the same time that we will need a leverage to ensure our interests of ensuring the Iraqi government rewards our heavy sacrifice in fiscal and human resources–with economic opportunities in the new industries and services that will be required–rather than to leave and forfeit those rights to cheap deals from the Chinese and Europeans who have born none of the costs of their repatriation.
-We should be afraid, very afraid. This man is either intentionally ignoring these facts in his speeches and agenda–or he is truly ignorant of the ramifications of his own propsals. That really is audacious hope!!
McCain continue to use any means to attack Obama creditability. McCain could you start talking about real issues?. Like the our strategy on the war on our economy , our future….
Obama ALWAYS plays the race card. He will always play the race card. Is this the change we want? I don’t think so.
Hey,
McCain noticed that he wasn’t holding a full deck. Figures Obama stole one his cards.
I would have to agree with Obama. McCain has nothing left, He offers no soulutions only negative adds . I truly believe that he is not ready to be president.
vote Obama
It is amazing to me that the McCain campaign folks are doing exactly what Bush did in his campaigns; they perform a vile act and then blame the other person for doing it. The only lesson they learned from what Bush did to McCain is to do the same thing to Obama and then say it is Obama doing it to McCain. What has happpened to gentility? My God.
So Obama calls McCain out on the carpet, with the above statement-which McCain is guilty of, and then he runs away like a beaten dog, tail between his legs whilst screaming foul play…
Amazing…
I can hardly wait for tomorrows news!
I have yet to read or hear a speech made by Obama that he did not play the race card. If the media and the Obama fanatics choose to ignore it that’s up to them. McCain called him on it. Big deal.
The DNC, Obama supporters and even Obama himself always use the race card. Obama used it earlier in his campaign and again yesterday. They pulled it on Bill Clinton, Geraldine Ferraro to name a few. Try to have a discussion with a Obama supporter to gain some insight into who Obama is and they accuse you of being racist When the Rev. Wright issue first came up instead of Obama addressing the issue, he gave us all a speech on race that sounded more like a lecture. So who is using the race card? Another poor judgement on Senator Obama’s part.
Only FOX would report this absurd comment from Mcshame as if it was reasonable and true.
It seems that neither one of these candiates are qualified to be President of The United States.
They should both run for president of the Kindergarten class of 2008, however the kids may not want them there either.
Give it up rick davis, you’re backing an old fool!
It is really hard to stomach Obama whining about attacks thrown his way when he engages in such dirty politics as accusing Republicans of being racist. And he has the nerve to put up “Fight The Smears”? Give me a break! He has now for the second time smeared republicans as being racist. Talk about your smears! The man makes me physically ill.

Select quotes taken from Obama’s Philly race speech, “A More Perfect Union”
“divisive, negative, shameful and wrong”
Four words that describe the McCain campaign to a T.
You are making this election more or less a referendum on Mr. Obama, Senator McCain. But why should we vote for *You*? What do you stand for that you didn’t oppose last week or a month ago? And it isn’t just my side of the aisle that’s asking the question: conservative commentators and the Wall St. Journal don’t know which side of the rail you’re sitting on either.
What’s the message? “Vote McCain and commit suicide, at least you’ll go to heaven?”
[...] McCain plays race card by claiming “race card” I just don’t see it. [...]
[...] Obama camp: McCain not using race but is taking “low road” by Mosheh Oinounou Obama campaign spokesman Tommy Vietor responds to Davis statement: [...]
Obama continues to when it suites him to interject the racial divide or the race card use when he believes it necessary. Obama is the one who continues to want to scare people with the racist term or racism adjective…he or his operatives has so used these terms for their own preceived advantage so often it really has no meaning anymore with this election. from the time odf the Wright issues and his anti-white black power views and the time Obama spent in the church supporting such diatribe to the “false” distancing from Wright when such was uncovered…Obama has wanted everyone to have a continual discussion on race but everytime there is any we are called racists or the race card is thrown down to stop the discussion. I am really tired of this desire on the part of Team Obam to try to change the music anytime they desire by using RACE….for political purposes. This is an election based on judgement, association , crediiblilty, experience and the background to be president…..there are people of colr who I would vote for but Obama is not qualified thus I will not vote for him. I care not to see a socialist in the White House or someone who will have his friends..Wright, Ayers…the terrorist…Farrahkahn sleep in the Lincoln bedroom…a person who was of much greater stature than Obama could ever be…and yet his operatives paint Obama as a JFK, Lincoln, a Churchill….and the savior for the nation???? This is not a race issue it is purely qualification driven and Obama is not qualified>
McCain is correct in responding to OBAMA’S DESCENT INTO RACIAL POLITICS. Obviously, charges of racism are the last refuge of the leftist brain. What I wish, however, as a fan of FOX news, is that the network would respond to MOVEON.ORG, Obama, et al who constantly accuse Fox of being “biased”. As a conservative, I would love to see FOX haul these critics into court and then create a PUBLIC TRIAL RECORD of Fox’s actual record of balanced commentary and the reporting of “both sides”. Imagine the effect of an actual court judgment (or a written opinion) proclaiming the accusations false!! Imagine, as well, a massive judgment against MoveOn.org for cash damages for libel, slander etc. If I received such a judgment, I would immediately use the money on an ad campaign to promote the truth about FOX.
I am frustrated that the left gets to constantly toss verbal grenades at Repubicans, Conservatives and networks like Fox, but the rght never wants to get its palms dirty fighting back. There is a war out there and the hearts and minds of a generation of Americans are at stake. If conservatives lack the will to begin fighting they deserve to lose.
The Rep are running scared and playing every dirty political trick in the book.
- Negative campaigning.
Obama will rise above the muck.
Obama08
I think that this is very sad, to see John McCain so desperate and so negative in his ads. He seems to be at a loss for a coherent message as the world is adopting Obama’s ideas and world view. It seems that voters want to be treated to a discussion of the issues and not a childish food fight. Waaa…. my opponent’s too popular !
Funny how the right responds… accuse the opposite side of what they’re guilty of doing.
McCain campaign is so desparate.
Rick Davis needs to can the Dick Cheney attitude; these attitudes and old schools of thoughts are going to sink our party deeper in the muck; we have already stirred up cloudy waters.

The above is a very odd statement from Obama. I don’t recall anyone from McCain’s campaign saying anything like that - ever. Obama just made it up and the media washed it across the national headlines thinking it would help Obama. It didn’t, so they call McCain a racist for his objections.
This is what I know: The old-school liberal “mainstream” media are untrustworthy and bitterly biased against all things Republican and conservative. So is Obama and his supporters. We need a major political correction in American politics. I will vote for McCain because he is a better candidate.
I think Mr. McCain is right on this. Don’t remember anyone even hinting as to how Obama doesn’t look
like other presidents. If Obama can’t get past his own skin color/ethnicity, how can he expect anyone else
to? It appears that he is self-fashioning his race into a cross to bear, embracing the “imagined” sufferage.
Please Mr. Obama, open your eyes, you are the one raising the race issue. One article accused McCain as
having a shortage of ideas, but this would indicate/his handlers have a deficit.
I think the desperation in John McCain’s campaign is becoming very evident. It has turned from campaigning on issues to breaking down Obama’s reputation.
[...] Are McCain’s people slow or what? They just realized that Obama plays the race card. [...]
So, where did Obama say anything about race, in “dealing” a “race card”. For all I can tell, his statement could mean that Obama sees himself as young, or not wearing a powdered wig, not having a pasty complexion or just generally not looking establishment. At best, McCain’s aide can make a personal inference about what Obama might have meant, but I get the impression they’ve just been waiting for Obama to say something they could interpret to be about race. Kinda pathetic to see where the McCain campaign is going compared to where it’s been in the past. More drilling rigs across the land is just going to further fatten of Exxon, Chevron, and the oil corporations’ cronies: Bush, Cheney, and now, apparently, McCain and his friends. These people don’t care about the common person, and they aren’t going to stop making money off us at the pumps. And they see global warming as a benefit, because they’re expecting to be able to buy mansions wherever a halfway liveable climate shakes out. At least Obama seems to be taking a stand against the corporate Shell game, for whatever that’s worth.
Nothing new here. Senator Obama used race as his get out of jail free card effectively throughout his primary campaign when he found it necessary to distract voters from issues he faced that clearly demonstrated his poor judgment and lack of integrity.
Senator Obama is not qualified on any level to be President of this country.
“You must respond instantaneously and with all you got,” and so what if it’s not really true. And so what if McCain is running on a platform of “don’t elect the other guy because he’s too popular and young.” And so what if compared to McCain most anyone is going to be young. If we fall for this America, chickens, vultures and pterodactyls will come home to roost. McCain really is Bush, just older and grumpier.
What is the outrage by Obama saying he has a different name and face from 200+ years of presidents!! Instead of McCaim and his lame staff yelling “race card”, they should be embracing the progress of America and agreeing that those in America who attack Obama as “uppity” or “different” are the ones who are out of step. The GOP needs to be worried over whose running the show at McCaim headquarters–Paris Hilton anyone?!
I’m sick of everyone putting President Bush down (by the way he is still the President)
he has kept you sorry asses safe and gets no thanks for it. We will see how safe we are
if the one (Obama) who thinks he’s already the President gets in office he will turn us all
over to his friends in the middle east and all our money will go to further the Black Theoology
movement.
“Because the Democrat-led Ethics Committee has been reluctant to act on these serious allegations, even after Chairman Rangel requested an investigation, members of both parties must step forward to protect the honor and integrity of this institution,” Boehner said in a statement. “If we fail to pass this resolution, the House will be telling the American people Members of Congress are above the law.”
the House will be telling the American people Members of Congress are above the law.”
the House is telling the American people Members of Congress are above the law.”
Wow, this is a stretch of the imagination just like most everything else the McCain camp is producing. “Any rational person” can see how pathetic this is, and the barest of scrutiny will bear this out. McCain is looking more desperate by the day.
As for Shmidt saying, “a lie unrebutted can become truth”……that is a ridiculous statement coming from the McCain camp. Most of what they have been trying to feed the public is false or misleading. For instance, telling the American public that lifting the ban on offshore drilling will produce gas in a few months when the US DEA has said that no oil will come online until the 2020’s and it will have little impact on prices. McCain made the wrong move bringing that necon hack Shmidt on board. Even right-wing character assassination won’t win this time.
I am insulted as a human being since Obama’s statement on how MaCain would attack him based on his race. Obama stated MaCaian would attack him since he did not look like all the other presidents on our currency! Now what the hell does that mean? Since when has MaCain been labled a racist? How dare Barack insult him in this manner. I was on the fence but not anymore. I expected more from Barack. He’s a racist.
Now the Rep and McCain are calling this a “race card” issue. This will divert everyone attention away from the important issues of this campaign. People, FOCUS!!!!! Do not let the Rep divert you away from the fact that they are running scared and will do anything to win. Obama has a plan for the betterment of the US and the Rep will try anything to prevent him from forging ahead with this vision.
Time for a change from McSame same old politics
Time for a change!!!!!!!
GoBama08
Obama and Obama only plays the race card. As long as Obama opened the door then it is a valid point to bring up to him. Why is so afraid to run on the issues?
In regards to oil JP experts say we can get oil in 2 years. That is just another pathetic excuse to keep the economy bad so the dems can win. Well it isn’t working this time around. We know who is blocking the bill and it is the democratic congress. Recall petitions have begun and we will get rid of all the corrupted democratic congress especially Reid and Pelosi.
This is the race card McCain is complaining about.
“So what they’re going to try to do is make you scared of me. You know, he’s not patriotic enough. He’s got a funny name. A comment made in response to an ad that shows Obama and blond white women.
Why didn’t anyone else beside me see this coming from Obama. I had a blog almost 2 years ago when Obama first announced his running for President that he would use the race card in order to make people feel sorry for him, making it look like he’s the victim. He used it on Hillary and here we go again. But the people caught on to it during the Primaries, but by then it was too late for Hillary. Hillary campaign did a poor job on combating this tactic and not forseeing it. Not this time suckaa. The American people are starting to realize it, and it shows by the poll numbers. The McCain haven’t said anything about race, it was all about his record and the things that he himself have said that the McCain campaign is attacking him on. But he’s bringing out these racist statements like this.
I am an independent voter that voted for Hillary, but I, along with millions of other Americans that voted for her will be voting for McCain. The true American Hero.
Barark, The only thing he brings to the table is the race card and his opinion of change. This country was awlsome place to live and respect fourty years ago. But every person that wasn’t a true American had a hidin agenda instead of living as a free american, in a comunist world. But if we as americans don’t wake up we are slowly pissing on everything our for fathers fought for to make this the best place to live period. So if you don’t call yourself an American, Please go back to where ever it is you come from I have three beautiful kids to raise in a free America!
This blog post is distorting Obama’s statement. A more complete statement was posted on the Fox News web site. It clearly shows that Obama was talking about the many McCain supporters who ARE using his name and false accusations to spread fear. Obama did call McCain out for using negative ads but the “dollar bill” statement was directed at McCain supporters.
Obama has stated, and reiterated today, that McCain himself has NOT brought race into the campaign.
And the Academy Award for best actor goes to………..Senator John McCain for “NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MAN!!!!”
The truth sometimes hurts. Obama is a complete joke. No experience, no plans on energy, high taxes, flip flopper and above all, a radical. Sorry Obama fans, but this man will put the already ailing economy into a downward spiral with his plans. McCain may not have the greatest plans as well, but at least you know where he stands.
Be wise America, vote John McCain.
McCain is clearly getting desparate. His commercial even mocks Obama’s ability to bring new voters to the political process, apparently that is bad in McCain’s eyes. McCain has actually come out and said he doesn’t know much about the economy, that is scary. Sorry McCain, you’re done. The country is ready for Obama.
How dare anyone say anything about the way Obama and his supporters act. Bad, Bad Fox. How can you report anything that is not up lifting about this holy man that walks on water and has such a silver tongue. I am so upset with Fox news. Ya right. Obama supporters get over it. You call names, bully people and insult anyone that does not agree with you. Have you people ever heard of the brown shirts. Look in the mirror. You are acting just the same way. This Democrat is not going to vote Democratic this time around.
Thank you Connie. You show some emotions there. But that’s okay, because Osama will not win. We need to ignite our base to go out and vote. These sorry ass Liberals will not know what they are missing until it’s no longer there…and that is Bush protecting their asses. I am sorry but that’s the truth.
McCain is the dope on this one. His advisor (Schmitt) looks like he may be in for a quick exit from the McCain “campaign”. The problem is, there’s nobody really in charge of that campaign. They continue to release completely contradictory statements, day after day, and even policy position statements that completely opposite of position their “candidate” has already taken. Which ever one of them is running McCain’s mouth these days should exercise a little more caution.
Maybe with his $money$ B.O. can buy all those “votes for Sale” in Alabama???
Government = your country on ‘GREED’

I think what OBAMA is guilty of is AGE-ISM….given that Senator McCain is now in his 70’s, Mr. OBAMA is quite poor taste is trying to say that Senator McCain looks OLD, just like the portraits of the presidents on our currency, all of which show our fine Presidents in their advanced age and not in their youth. Shame on you Mr. OBAMA.
Didn’t Obama a statement like this in the primaries? It was very close to the same only I am pretty sure that he ended it with “oh and by the way he’s black”. I’m not sure where he was when he stated it, but I think it was in the Carolinas??? The Clinton campaign gave accused him of playing the race card then if I’m not mistaken.
Did anyone see the “eye smerk” just before Obama said his phrase about …not looking like the other presidents on the US currency. He looked right at the camera just before he “threw down the race card”….Obama knew exactly what he was doing when he did it and did it 3 times that day……and then his “Team Obama” said…no it was not intended to reflect such….WHO ARE THEY TRYING TO KID???? Obama knew very well he was inciting the “race card” issue for political purposes…what a poser!!!! Poor judgement and total lack of experience…Obama media driven “celebrity status” has truely gotten to his head and with it lower and lower polls. He is not qualified for the highest office in the world as much as the “in the tank” media protrays him as the “savior”. Although things are not that great this nation’s economy is still expanding….true some tough times have been encountered and issues are still occurring…but to think this nation REQUIES a total “new System” of government and economy ..BECAUSE OBAMA SAYS SO…..is both foolish and a disaster that is awaiting anyone who ascribes to the Obama view of what the US should “be”….a socialistic state. NOT !!!

It seems to me that there are some finer points that I thought were somewhat obvious that are being missed. If anyone thinks that race is not a factor in any endeavor in public office they have spent there life under the proverbial rock. There are people who will not vote for Barac just because he is a democrat; there are people that will vote for him only because he is a democrat. Unfortunately there are people that will not vote for him because he is black, just as unfortunate there are people who are only going to vote for Barac because he is black. If you don’t blame the people voting for him because he is black or a democrat you can’t blame the people that are voting against him because he is black or a democrat. The smallest percentage of people that vote on policies and abilities are going to be the deciding factor.
My point is the McCain ad that shows Brittany and Paris is poignant and perceptive in a subtle approach. The Brittany and Paris personas have both been swept up to the top of popularity with little warning or substance. They were able to swoon the media with every word and action with millions of people watching. Just as fast as they became the media darlings, the world found out that they were superficial and deranged. Basically being famous for nothing can only carry you so far. Barac is much the same, he has come from nowhere with little experience and no public account, the time he has spent in the Senate does not prepare you for being The President of the United States. This is not the time for OJT, if he has any practical experience that sets him apart from McCain, people should be yelling at the top of there lungs “show me the resume……show me the resume.” So far I have not seen anything that shows me that when the tough gets going he is prepared to handle the issues at hand.
By the way, we have seen how far the Brittany and Paris show has sunk, hopefully Barac doesn’t get elected before we see how low he sinks.
Rudy, don’t care. When you get turned down for a job is cause “you cannot read, write, speak English, do math, can handle the work, not cause your “Black”. BOOHOO, think I will go home and cry.

This is the race card McCain is complaining about.
“So what they’re going to try to do is make you scared of me. You know, he’s not patriotic enough. He’s got a funny name. A comment made in response to an ad that shows Obama and blond white women.
The McCain campaign claims they would like to put this issue to rest. Of course, make a jab at someone then call it quits. That’s what Cindy McCain did to Michelle Obama on Good Morning America last month.
It seems the Obama campaign would like to put this race card issue to rest, rather than point out that the dollar bill comment was a reference to the satire that has repeatedly appeared on conservative 527 web sites.
In fact, was it not McCain that put pictures on his own web site of Obama’s face on the Statue of Liberty , Mount Rushmore, and on the dollar bill awhile back. The quickly took it down but the purpose had already been served.
Chief,
Only juvenile minds stoop to the level of name calling. It is people such as you that have given conservatives and the GOP such a bad reputation in recent years. Keep up the good work so your team can lose. It is because of people such as yourself that Michelle Obama said that the US can be “mean”.
I’m fortunate not to have been born “Black in America”. I was born in the inner city. You have no clue what it means to be a minority in this country. If you do not believe that racism thrives and exists in this country you have been living in a fantasy world.
I guess most of the people who blog here have forgotten that McCain once had a picture of Obama’s face on a dollar bill posted on his web site. It was taken down within a day or so.
This was clearly a calculated political move by the McCain camp. To say they were responding to Obama’s statements is totally false. In fact it’s more accurate to say that Obama was responding to the images McCain has been puting out.
Check out this video where I put Obama’s comments over top of one of McCain’s attack ads from a month earlier. His comments fit perfectly with the images being shown in the ad:
