Obama on Paris: Never Met The Woman

UNION, Mo - Barack Obama didn’t let a little rain keep him from ribbing John McCain about his latest anti-Obama ad at a Missouri cookout — ridiculing the McCain campaign for comparing him to Paris Hilton.

“Since they don’t have any new ideas the only strategy they’ve got in this election is to try to scare you about me,” Obama told the crowd of 100 gathered under a picnic shelter. He’d used that line of attack throughout the day.

“They’re going to send out nasty emails. The latest one, they’ve got me in an ad with Paris Hilton,” he continued, drawing chuckles. “Never met the woman.”

Obama compared McCain and the GOP to those Debbie Downers in people’s everyday lives. “John McCain and the Republicans, they don’t have any new ideas, that’s why they’re spending all their time talking about me,” he said. “You haven’t heard a positive thing out of that campaign in a month. All they do is try to run me down.”

“You know this in your own life. If somebody doesn’t have anything nice to say about anybody, that means they’ve got some problems of their own.”

Meanwhile, the Obama campaign is up with a downer ad of its own responding to what it feels are continued TV attacks from the McCain campaign — accusing his rival of false, baseless attacks and of continuing the “same old politics.” The ad will begin airing tomorrow.

I just saw the ad, well that is VERY fitting, empty suit or dress like Paris or Britney although he seems to be a better parent than Britney, I will give him that. As far as qualifications for Prez though yes, about the same as Britney or Paris running, they too could probably read a TELEPROMPTER (when they’re not drunk that is). McCAIN/ROMNEY 2008!!!!

Obama’s Ad did not appear to be a downer at all. It’s the nasty McCain ads that worry me… and the FOX News “reporting” that also worries me….

McCane is an old man that has not had a new idea in years. He must be reading People or other mags of that nature. Why doesn’t he retire. I would if I had a wife that looked like his with her money. I would open a bar and be totally satisfied. Why screw up the country for another 4 years or less….don’t think he could last….The Joker

It’s the Mccain Ads and FOX news “reporting” that concerm ne. The Obama Ad was not nasty or a downer in any way.

Fox, this article seems very biased. Obama “used this line of attack all day”? What is it that Obama is “attacking”? And Obama has a “downer ad of its own responding to what it feels are continued TV attacks from the McCain campaign”? Why is it considered a “downer” ad, and everybody feels they are attack ads not just Obama.

Really now, what’s going on here?

Comment by bmrowe23

I don’t like either of the candidates, but I am respectful enough not to compare them to trailer trash. It must be a slow news day.

Comment by Mike

I’m concerned that someone will figure out that John McCaim is the one supporting giving tax cuts to Paris Hiltin and other rich spoiled kids while Obama wants to tax ‘em–Wasn’t this the kind of rich girl John McCain would have chased around the shrimp table back in the day when he was a playboy? In all seriousness, I think this is a stupid tactic and I hope someone smart like Gergin or Ed Rollins can talk some sense into McCain’s campaign people.

Comment by Nathan Ecken rode

wondering if McCain even knows who Britney and Paris are, guess he just thought that they were nice looking women to traipse about that ad. You know he hasn’t seen any of their “body of work” he can’t even sign onto the internet.

Say What. FOX News - what are you up to? Obama’s AD was not nasty or a downer. WHere do you get this stuff?

Dude’s got class. McCain should take notes.

Comment by John from CA

So why is McCain desparately criticizing Obama for “being popular”? Well, he tried to criticise him for wanting to withdraw troups from Iraq and shifting them to Afghanistan; that didn’t work out so well for McCain. He tried to criticise him for calling for more direct diplomacy with Iran; and now Bush has finally come around to agreeing with Obama on this point. Obama is the first candidate ever to forgo using tax-payer dollars to fund his campaign, while McCain will spend $87M of them, and conservative McCain tried to criticise him for this. He doesn’t have much else any more than that Obama is “popular”.

It’s become very clear that this is not an election between Obama and McCain – this is an election between Obama and Not Obama. Conservatives spend at least 80% of their energy blasting Obama; I seldom see any of them (including McCain ads) suggest reasons that McCain would make a good president.

Comment by mark

I wish we would hear something substantial and political of the campaigns. Candidates should study why 75 % of us think congress is doing a lousy job. I donated to the McCain campaign because I am a member of the Republican party, not because I wanted to see a circus number.

Comment by that1guy

Can’t argue with that ad. All McCain has left is to tear down Obama, which is really sad. Wasn’t McCain the one who promised that this would be a campaign of ideas? If so, where are his?

If the only “idea” he has is to stage more Bush-like catastrophes, then definitely, positively no thanks; I’ll bet on Obama.

Comment by Todd

And what about the ad McCain runs with a picture of Fidel Castro and Obama side by side… Really dissapointing… Reagan was a great inspiring leader and McCain is not… Obama seems to inspire and that is what the people want… I want a president who is like by the world… It helps our cause. Sorry to say I really hope McCain doesnt win….

Comment by Carl

Ridiculous! Seems like the republicans are jealous of the way Obama can impact our world. It does matter that he can get along so well with foreign leaders. We can’t afford to stay in Iraq, if we are going to continue in Afghanistan then we need the help of other nations. We can’t continue borrowing from China! They adore republicans like former president Reagan, who was an actor before entering politics. How about Schwarzenegger who some republicans were even trying to change the constitution for. Even stating that he is good for business because people know his face from movies. And yet you take one man who is able to affect people who hunger for change and are tired of the same old Washington politics.

Over and over again we say look Obama has inspired this person and that one, but you know what he’s black and what do they do? They hang him out to dry! …pathetic. Why should I vote for McCain, he is too old! The media clearly stated that the job of the Commander and chief is a stressful one, It ages you by ten years. Who would I be voting for McCain or his VP!

Comment by linda

McCain is so desperate he’s starting to come unhinged.

Comment by Bradley Looy

I’ll show you not use negative ads, here take that! *hurls negative ad*

Comment by Jared

I agree with what Obama says: If you spend all of your time criticizing your opponent, it implies that you have nothing positive to say about yourself. Sadly, this is true of John McCain. More sadly, using an ad hominem attack on your opponent does nothing constructive and shows a lack of something more substantive from an already-desperate McCain campaign.

Comment by JAB

Talk about an irony. John McCain calls Barack Obama and elitist. Let’s see. Who is it that with his wife owns somewhere between eight and twelve houses, has God only knows how many millions of dollars, a personal airplane and even more millions from the Anheuser Busch Belgian byout? I thought that was John McCain.

Comment by Erika

McCain we just are so tired of you negative approach! Where did the old McCain go to? Hat to say this but I’am going to vote for Obama he has proved to be a better leader for this country. My vot will be for Obama.

Ironic to hear McCain calling Obama an elitist when McCain has been the consumate Washington insider with a $100M trophy wife who flys him to campaign events in her corporate helicopter. Obama worked his way from the tough Chicago streets to Harvard Law School. The GOP has invented a new definition for the word elitist to describe a “popular go-getter”. Republican’s obviously favor non-elitist like Dubya who rise to power the old fashined way through inherited wealth and well connected pals.

Comment by Jason Q

You mentioned that Obama had his own negative attack ad in response, but you didn’t describe it to me. You mentioned a recent ad but it is pretty accurate, and this article goes far in proving it. Pathetic. But, you know, keep trying, you are only helping put a Dem in the white house, which is nothing compared to what it will be like to watch your network eat it’s own words for the next four years and hopefully disappear from my cable box.

Comment by Kevin

I don’t like the fact that McCain has spent so much time being negative, but I can understand it. The media’s paparazzi fascination with Obama annoys the heck out of me and I’m not even a Republican. It’s been how many months now and the man is still speaking in vague buzzwords, and people are eating it up. They bragged last year that after 8 years of Bush they could get Donald Duck elected… now what does that say about the intelligence of the American people?

It’s time these two got down to the facts, so I can get back to dreaming that I live in a country where voters pay more attention to what a candidate does and stands for than what they read in an editorial or how he looks on TV.

Comment by Carol Campbell

Politician are forgetting one fundamental rule. We are smarter and more evolved then their tactics. It’s so easy to see beyond the game. I think the McCain camp should realize this. If Hillary couldn’t do it I doubt if his campaign can. Now lets see if Fox publishes this.

Comment by Adam

Has McCain really run out of things to say? A very sad day.

Comment by Peter

I am really disappointed with John McCain’s choice to start running a negative campaign. He should focus on the strengths of his values - NOT denigrating his opponent. It seems especially hypocritical given his criticism of Bush’s negative campaigning against him in 2000, and which arguably cost him the Republican nomination.

Barack Obama has one thing right: we need a paradigm shift in how politics operate in this country. Politics as usual has become a disgusting spectacle that does nothing to advance this country or the quality of life for Americans.

Comment by markus

Wow an Obama endorsement video at the beginning of this article. Is this even journalism or just a campaign promotion? Not saying I care for Mccain but this has gone past reporting facts and become a political circus.

Comment by Hannah

Pretty interesting how Obama condemns people who can’t say anything nice and then turns around and makes the exact same type of attack against McCain. Hypocracy anyone?

Comment by Pops

Sorry John, but when you heard that Obama visited Paris, it wasn’t that one.

Comment by Lenny

Obama has not done anything yet so how’s he a failure. If these are the kind of people voting for mccain, we ain’t got nothing to worry about.

Comment by Andrew

Which one said they wouldn’t go negative?

Comment by Jason

McCain’t needs to heed the call of retirement and help Cindy spend her billions.

And the Republicans need to come up with policies that don’t involve bankrupting the country and making each successive year worse than the previous one.

Comment by Amy

According to factcheck.org, 1/3 of McCain’s ads have been negative and only 1/10 of Obama’s have been negative. It sounds like Obama is simply responding to the overwhelming mudslinging that has become the McCain campaign. McCain, obviously, is desperate - he harangued Obama about not visiting Iraq, and then when Obama visited Iraq, he suddenly had to scramble around for a new way to attack Obama. Comparing him to Paris freakin’ Hilton? PLEASE. If you get close enough to the TV, you can probably get a whiff of McCain’s (rightfully) nervous sweat.

Comment by Trawlerman

For a guy who said that he was going to stay the high road, poor old John has clearly lost his way. I wish he would stop making such a sorry spectacle of himself and get back to issues.

Comment by Nathan

Thanks for the great insight to the discussion, I am sure you are wise beyond your years.

Comment by Shain from NH

John McCain wonders why he’s slipping in NH when it should be a strong hold for him. It’s because of stuff like this. I liked him because I believed that he would take the high road and prove himself to be more worthy of the presidency than anyone else. Thus far, it appears that I’m mistaken.

Does anyone else realize how biased this article is? No other major news source uses the words ‘ridicule’ or ‘attack’ to describe the actions of either presidential candidate. This article is pretty blatant.

Comment by EJS

I think it is refreshing that these guys can be humorous while conducting a campaign.

The comparison to Britney and Paris isn’t negative it is funny. Honestly, I would hope both candidates and their supporters would enjoy the jibe.

It is certainly less negative then ads describing McCain as Bush in a different package.

If anything, it is a criticism of the media which has fallen head over heals into the Obama personality cult.

Honestly, I could care less about the number of people who came to the “Rock Star” events in Berlin. And I think McCain’s ad is a response to the stupidity of the coverage of Obama abroad.

I am still undecided… but I can appreciate a creative way of poking fun at your opponent.

Comment by Greg F

I just wanted to point out to those that have used the term “trailer park trash” is not very respectful. It is a derogatory term toward families who have made a particular choice. I am a democrat who is not voting for Obama…some of the “open minded” enlightened one may call me racist based on that. Talk about hypocrisy.

In 2004, Obama compared himself to Paris. His memory must be slipping.

Comment by brainsucker_angel of the Phil.

It’s really a pity Mccain is always criticizing his opponent. It doesn’t show much about how and what he thinks. Can’t he think of something better than attacking his opponent on a personal level? His arguments are not just beside the point but his arguments don’t have any point at all. He’s pathetic, isn’t he?…

Comment by A VOTE FOR OBAMA IS A VOTE FOR A WELFARE STATE

I love the response ad. Every time Obama speaks he promises giving away lots of money that isn’t his to give. This man will try to buy his way into office by promising that he will make gas cheap, fix social security, and bail out every ‘middle class’ defaulting lender that is staring at foreclosure by taking it from ‘the rich’. None of these are within his power to do, but he’ll promise them anyway to buy the vote of any idiot that will listen. This man is one shade away from a socialist. I’ve voted democrat since 1988, but it will end here. Anyone who promises giving away other people’s money for a vote is a low life. I dont even qualify as ‘the wealthy’ under his definition (make over 230K), but it makes no difference. In principle, you just dont promise something that isn’t yours to give. Its not the money of the ‘government’, its the money of AMERICAN TAXPAYERS. Oh, and trust me, as we suck the money out of ‘the rich’ to pay for all the welfare recipients, the government will redefine what being rich means, and soon the ‘middle class’ will be called ‘the wealthy’ and paying for all the people in the US that insist on living beyond their means. As soon as the US becomes as big of a welfare state as most of Europe, I’m leaving. Obama is just another step in that direction. I’ll have nothing to do with him.

Comment by anonie1

I am very disappointed with John MccCain; who knew? He says he is not George Bush, that he would run a different campaign, yet he is using the Bush, Rove, Atwater play book. I’ll never forget those awful Willie Horton ads Bush ran 24/7 against Dukakis.
McCain if you’re going to stick your toe in pop culture know this; Paris Hilton and Brittany Spears were HOT in 2005…not now.

Comment by nicolas

Wow, McCain’s campaign hits a new low with that commercial. He seem to think the American people are a bunch of dumb 12 years old in a schoolyard. No wondering his “base” is melting so fast…

Comment by John

Downer? Not Obama’s ad Mr Bruns and Fox News, you folks better wake up. The only downer here is that downer cow John McCain. McCain’s latest attack is pathetic. It’s a pathetic ploy, a pathetic campaign plan, a pathetic candidate to lead the United States of America. Obama wins by default. Republicans and McCain can’t get their act together enough to even deserve serious consideration.

Comment by Rick

I truly feel that it is about time that one of these two candidates, either one mind you, takes a look at the situation that we have on our hands now. The country is running a $487+ billion dollar deficit next year, the dollar is 0.64 to the euro at the moment, gold has gone from around $250 less than a decade ago to nearly $1,000 (950+) today and I hear no solutions from either that I feel will work. Obama talks about raising the taxes on those Americans making over $250,000 a yr but when you look at the research done by the WSJ the rich don’t pay more when they are taxed more, they just stop investing as much while looking for loopholes to avoiding paying more in taxes. The economy, unfortunately, is not one of McCain’s strong points either. Our Congress is sending billions of dollars a year to nations around the world in the form of foreign aid and our entitlement program is larger than Canada’s GDP and here we are talking about how much OBAMA is like PARIS HILTON or SPEARS…I am saddened.

McCain has quickly come to realize he’s overmatched. Hillary was a much stronger (she worked weekends and I believe her husband had some Washington connections) and smarter candidate. Now he sees why she lost and he has nothing but smear. It worked on him in 2000 and Kerry in 2004, but now that river is not only stagnant, it’s old and slow. Policy doesn’t work because all he has is drilling (and he’s newly flipped to that - forget that it won’t work) and his disastrous war that Obama and al-Maliki have given him a severe beatdown on. I might feel sorry for him except I always remember how he left his crippled wife.

This is brilliant: TMZ.com is reporting that Paris Hilton’s parents donated $4300 to John McCain’s campaign. Now he’s trashing their daughter by comparing her to Barak Obama. This guy is senile. Trashing GOP stalwarts. The Hiltons are very wealthy Texas hotel barons–not “hollywood”. McCain is definitely off message. He should be bragging how his economic plans will help Paris Hiltin and all of her kind

Comment by ibedsmn

Seems like McCain, after 20 years in the senate, ought to see if he can learn the difference between a Sunni and Shi’a, rather than between Obama and Britney/Paris.

That’d be a good start for a guy that hasn’t looked beyond the end of his nose for a very long time, and I assume both comparisons will be difficult for him to understand.

Comment by WoudKano

I am surprised that on a FOX-based site, most of the bloggers are blaming McCain for going negative.

Comment by Tom

There were 200 people, plus media and volunteers, under the picnic shelter at the event. Fox’s St. Louis affiliate (and every other outlet) reported that the 200 tickets to the event were all taken within minutes of their being offered yesterday. In addition, according to Fox’s KTVI, another 300 to 400 people stood outside the event in the rain, without tickets. To say there were 100 people when there was a definite count of 200 inside the pavilion is sloppy reporting at best, and a deliberate misrepresentation of turnout at the worst. Since this is a clear-cut, factual issue, I imagine a correction is forthcoming.

Good job Obama! We won’t be Swiftboated this time! The Republicans have two choices: Talk about the last 8 years or try to tear down Obama. McCain, you are soiling yourself. Keep this up and you will have succesfully transformed yourself from a respected public servant and warrior to another slimy politician who has no one’s respect.

McCain’s ad prompted me to send the following to him via his web site:

There were only preselected items for a subject heading, so I chose “Tell us about an event”

The event I’m telling you about is your own, specifically your “Celeb” ad. Mr. McCain, your most recent ad, “Celeb” is the final straw for me. This add says NOTHING about you and is ONLY a cut to Obama. I take that back, it does say something about you, it says YOU are NOT presidential material. I don’t like your smug profile at the end of the ad either. One would think that at your age you would have grown up by now. Your childish negativity has led me to do something I’ve not yet done in my 30 years as a voter, I’ve just now donated money to the Obama campaign. Obama is the first presidential candidate in my 30 years as a voter that I’ve actually felt deserved to hold the presidency of the United States. Additionally, it is not difficult to see through your deceits, lies, fabrications and idiocy. You don’t have a compaign for the presidency, you have a campaign against Obama. How do you and those working for you sleep at night? No need to answer this question, it is rhetorical. Also, please, no response whatsoever is wanted at all. This message is informational to you only. I’ve created this special email address so I could track how you use it.
P.S. My phone number shown reads as: Oba-maT-he01, just in case you try to use it, it’s not real, but rather a statement.

Since the GOP was silly enough not to nominate Ron Paul, I’m voting for Barack Obama. I disagree with him on many economy issues, but he’s got a vastly more sane grasp of reality than McCain, and doesn’t use cheap shot negative campaigning like McCain’s camp is unfortunately doing. McCain used to be a decent candidate, with the mantle of an old school Republican. Now he’s desperate and running on fumes.

Someone verbally attacks you. A counter attack is the usual response. When the response finally comes, it is a statement of the fact that you were verbally attacked.

Such a response is not a negative attack. It is called the truth.
