McCain declares opposition to raising Social Security taxes

AURORA, CO — Attempting to mollify his critics on the right, Sen. McCain declared today that he is against raising payroll taxes as a fix for Social Security.
“On social security, (Senator Obama) wants to raise Social Security taxes. I am opposed to raising taxes on Social Security. I want to fix the system without raising taxes,” McCain told about 200 workers today at a town hall meeting at the Wagner Equipment Co. headquarters.
McCain has taken incoming fire from fiscal conservatives, including the Club for Growth, in the last few days who argue that comments the Arizona Senator made over the weekend stating that he is leaving the door open to all fixes, including a tax increase, is in direct conflict with his pledge to not raise taxes.
“There is nothing that’s off the table,” McCain told ABC over the weekend. “I have my positions, and I’ll articulate them. But nothing’s off the table.”
At his town hall meeting today, McCain repeated that while he is opposed to a tax increase he still plans to engage in an open and “good faith” discussion with Democrats on how to solve the entitlement crisis.
“We need to sit down together my friends. You expect us Republicans and Democrats to sit down and fix social security so that future generations of Americans can have the same benefits that present day retirees have,” McCain added today.
So read his lips, no payroll tax increase? Well, not quite.
When asked if a McCain administration will veto any Social Security compromise that includes a tax increase, an adviser said that while McCain is opposed to raising taxes he is also not willing to predetermine the outcome of future talks.
However, it appears that his more explicit statement today pleased skeptics over at the Club for Growth.
“We are pleased to hear Senator McCain reaffirm his opposition to raising taxes, including Social Security taxes. When it comes to tax policy, we have no doubt that Senator McCain will be much better for economic growth in this country than Barack Obama,” said Nachama Soloveichik, a spokesperson for the group.
Not surprisingly, Democrats are still pushing the issue as a flip-flop.
“Despite a week of scrambling, McCain’s campaign still has failed to explain how both of those statements can be true,” writes the DNC’s Damien LaVera in his latest email to reporters.

Flip flopin liar, say anything to get elected.
How do you balance a budget without dealing with entitlement programs which make up 62% of our budget? Ask Bill Clinton who left the presidency with a surplus.
McCain doesnt want to raise taxes for the rich…..he wants to reduce them…..Why would he want to raise taxes on his wifes income…….
look, from economists and our own government…..the top 1% of American Earners are the only group to get a boost from how our economy is right now……even in foreclosures, high gas prices, expensive groceries and all levels showing a recession…….the riches Americans are still Ok….Feel Better?
Obama08
Wow I know why I am switching from a Republican to Democrat. We need to educate our people and get out of this downward spiral. We are by far the richest country in the world and have the greatest opportunity to make our country better, more efficient and a leader in technology, but we seem to reject these ideas and keep our people dumb and ignorant. I don’t get why people don’t want to invest in our country knowing that it takes $$. Much like a business. The payoff in the long run is so great! And the majority of people think that if we stay the same course and invest nothing things will get better. Any businessman knows this is not true. This is not us vs them(Rep vs Dem)…. this is about US!! That is what Obama is all about.
And now I know why as a Democrat I will not be supporting the Democratic party this year. If the Democrats continue to raise taxes on everything many of us will not be able to support our own familys. I don’t mind paying my fair share but there is no free lunch. I pay as much tax as my paycheck can possible support. I think we can do a lot of things before we decide we need to raise taxes. How about making government more responsible. When they quit with there special projects, under the table deals in the back room, spending abovehere means then we can talk about raising taxes. Until then keep your hands off my money.
Why should we pay more social security tax? My after tax income can’t be ripped more!!!
Support Mccain, no more ridiculous tax please.
The government should not be a welfare.
And you guys want more money? work harder, don’t rob others’ money!
The “economic growth” that the Club for Growth refers to is pretty much isolated and affects mostly a small percentage of wealthy Americans. Maybe those people constitute the membership of the Club.
Flip flopper only this past week you said it was on the table. You can lie to Republicans but we Democrats can see a liar when he comes.
First of all, It seems to me that you cannot call obama a flip floper. Flip Floppers change from one opinion to another, and obama has TWO opposite opinions at once!! I am going to vote for the canidate i think would be best for this country. And since i dont want to live in a communist “NO RIGHTS” country I will not vote for Obama. Im not saying i will vote for Mcain, but definetly not Obama. I am sick of living this lie of environmentalism that is just propoganda to controle Americans lives. We dont even have the right to private property here in oregon anymore!!!
Its sad the way this country is going. Definetly not what are fore-fathers gave there blood for.
The demographics are shifting. Bluntly put more old people and fewer young people. Either we raise Social Security taxes, or we change the way the Social Security Administration allocates benefits. In the matter of never raising taxes, everyone is a constituent for increased government spending when they get more change in their pockets. Raising taxes or the threat of increased taxes is the only way to populate a constituency for reining in spending. Spending without any threat that it may precipitate increased taxes is like handing out credit cards and telling recipients that they’ll never get a bill from the bank. Only a fool wouldn’t start shopping like a professional that very day. That very simply is the reason the three most recent presidents (two sharing the last name, and one of those still in office) who promised they’d never raise taxes, taken together, have ran up more debt during the years of their tenures than all other presidents since the founding of the republic. Spending should hurt. Taxes are the best vehicle for applying the pain. You can tax honestly through the IRS or tax by crook, as has been happening, by printing money.

I wonder if John McCain will decide not to receive his social security check each month since he married a very rich woman? I can’t think he needs the money. I understand he accepts the payments even though he could refuse it. Is this a double standard?
PEOPLE i CAN TELL YOU THERE IS NOTHING AS IMPORANT AS SS PRICE ARGUE ABOUT BUT BOTTOM LINE IS ITS A MUST I’M 70 AND I CAN TELL YOU IF YOUR HOUSE IS PD FOR:CAR PD FOR;THE TOILET DOES’T STOP UP YU ARE OK YOU WILL LILL BE OK THIS MONTH BUT IT BEATS THE NOTHING (YOU CAN NOT IMAGINE HOW GREAT IS TO LOOK FORWARD!) I SURE HOPE YOU LISTEN ladybug
Obama’s only proposing to increase Social Security tax on incomes over $250k. Considering all the tax cuts Bush’s given the 3% of Americans who would be affected by this tax increase, I think it’s time to consider an adjustment in the other direction, especially as the deficits are expected to grow again for the next couple years.
There is no plan to raise social security “taxes” (I do not consider the social security contribution a tax). The point is to remove the cap that currently exists on higher incomes. Folks making over $100, 000 do not contribute to the program beyond that amount. What is being proposed is to take
that cap off and have them pay regardless of their income. There is no plan to increase the contributions for those making less than $100,000.
to All americans;
Vote for Obama is a vote for bin laden. Send this creep back to another country. He is no good for USA. He will raise taxes, inflashion, interest rates. He will reduce your buying power. Obama will increase you taxes taken out of your paychecks and the cost of everything will be more expensive. I want to know is it true he does not cover his heart during the national anthem?
“WV”
if only that were a problem - think how easy it would be to fix things…
Some see flip-flopping as a weakness, but is in fact only a slick, catchy phrase. Those who use it so glibly in a game of political “gotcha!” are fools. We have many very serious social and economic problems in this country which require FLEXIBILITY in thought, and not rigid positions. It is to the credit of any thoughtful leader who modifies his or her position in face of facts or changing conditions. There are several self evident truths that leaders of both parties must realize. First, you can’t contiually spend more that you make. Secondly, no modern country can run without oil. That does NOT mean we shouldn’t make an all out effort to develop NUCLEAR, solar, wind, & geothermal energy sources. It does NOT mean we shouldn’t develop more fuel efficient, hybrid, electric, fuel cell, etc cars. Since the price of oil is based on the futures market, the simple announcement of more domestic drilling will drop the price of oil internationally. More of our dollars will stay in the U.S.A., the trade deficit will fall, and the value of the dollar will rise. Thirdly, you cannot abandon your manufacturing jobs to the third world. Every time you buy from Wal-Mart, Costco, this Mart or that Mart, you are selling out your country for a pile of junk. The top 10% already pays 70% of the taxes. Creation of a Euro-socialist state only insures permanent mediocrity, and limited opportunity for all.
McCain is stepping in the doodoo. i can see the headlines now. “McCain proposes all Americans get a sugar mama so that we can get rid of Social security”. Then we’ll find out his first wife is surviving off SS. Mark my word, the current administration is offering him advice. ‘Oh yeah, campaign commercials with celebrities would be a great idea. No, you won’t look like an old coot.’ Then when McCain tanks and loses by a landslide, everyone will flock back to the Bush side of the party. ‘well they were inept but atleast they knew how to run a campaign’. This man has some major judgement issues.
Taxes will raise more in the next 30 years if McCain wins. He’s never even had to balance his own budget. How did the right get it so wrong on this putz.
We can all agree that Mcain is not The best bet for our country. But Obama is the absolute worst.
So unless something magical happens we just gota deal with mcain for 4 years. I would rather that than say bye bye to America. Obama does not cover his heart durring the National Anthem mike. His wife even said shes never been proud of her country and she is like 40+ years old. Alot of great things happened in America durring that time frame. His Pastor and mentor HATES America. What does that tell you about Barak? He wants to skew this country to the way he see’s fit. Say bye bye democracy and say hello Socialism. we will lose our position in the world as the number 1 superpower when we become part of the North America Union. Open your eyes!
History lesson……… Social security was never meant to be your sole means of livelyhood when you retire. It was meant almost as a co payment to pention plans and retirement funds. In this day and age if you are counting on social secutity to bail you out in retirement, you’re in dreamland.
I don’t mind helping those in need when they need it…I do have a problem of constantly funding those who do not wish to make a better life for themselves. Claiming that you live in a poor area and have no access to better jobs or a better education is a crock. If you want something badly enough then you go out and earn it. Life is not and should not be a free ride….for anyone.
There are so many ways to fund college, especially when you are below a certain income, whether it is through grants or loans…or here’s a novel idea, work your way through college, you know GET A JOB.
With a further education you can get a better job and start a retirement fund…instead of my tax dollars. Throwing money at a problem doesn’t fix it, it just creates bigger problems.
The previous post by Charles is correct. Neither Obama nor McCain has EVER considered raising Social Security rates. All they are looking at is the cap at which rich people get to stop paying (currently $102,000). The top 10% may pay about 70% of the taxes, but this is because they have about 90% of the money.
Here is the example. A person making $200K per year only pays about 3% of his paycheck to Social Security (6.2% on the first $102K). A person making $90K (or $50K, or $25K) pays 6.2 percent of his paycheck.
This isn’t about raising taxes. It is about closing a loophole that exists only for the rich. That McCain is at least considering it is a sign of good judgement. I don’t want a president who stubbornly clings to positions even when it becomes obvious that he is wrong (like Bush).
I feel sorry for anyone who is voting for McCain thinking that he is going to save ss. Here is someone who thinks privatizing ss is a plausible solution. In the mist of homes foreclosing and a bill being proposed to bail out bad loan decisions by the same people mind you who he’ going to turn over their ss funds to invest. This man is rich who thinks the same way as his former economic adviser Phil Graham does America has become a nation of whiners. Don’t you older voters think just because he is old he can simpathizes with you, he dosen’t have to rely on ss. If he bankrupts it he’s not going to suffer one bit. Also I hope you don’t have any grandsons who are eligible to be drafted because he is the most war hungry person I’ve seen. If he wins, everyone who voted him in office should have to sign up to enter the militaryas back up. I have two sons who I have poured my heart and hard work into and I don’t want to see them drafted to fight unnecessary wars.
well u wont have to worrie about your sons being drafted because when the ICBM’s fall without any missile defense system to counter them (thanks to obama) there will be nothing left to defend or fight for
