McCain says he wouldn’t go to Olympics
Sen. McCain told CNN’s Larry King Live Monday night that he wouldn’t attend the Olympic Opening Ceremonies if he was president though he adds that he doesn’t blame President Bush for attending the event.
KING: Concerning the Olympics, if you were president would you attend the Opening Ceremonies?
MCCAIN: You know I don’t think I would particularly in light of the Tibetan situation. I want good relations with China. I recognize China is an emerging superpower but frankly I don’t question the president’s decision and it’s a decision only a president can take. As a private citizen I think that the television coverage of it is going to be very excellent.
The comments come less than a week after he met with the Dalai Lama and received some backlash from the Chinese.

This is one where both candidates got it right. The President should not attend this and give the communist butchers of Beijing a propaganda victory by showing they world how normal they are that they can even host the President of the United States.
They are not normal, they are monsters. But there is little doubt who will give them a harder time (McCain), and who will roll over (Obama). China’s ascendancy is another reason we can’t have an appeaser in the office in the form of Obama. He’s not WRIGHT for America!
Let’s not forget that Bush had originally announced that he would attend the Games, but not personally attend the opening ceremonies as part of the official US delegation that will attend.
I think Bush has made the right choice here. Pres. Carter made the mistake of boycotting the entire Moscow Games in 1980. He also imposed sanctions on food exports to the USSR He hurt athletes and farmers alike in the name of political posturing.
The whole point of the Olympic Games is to set aside your differences and compete on the athletic field and not the political stage. It creates dialog between countries and cultures that would not other exist. John McCain has taken his stance.
WHY is this story on a political Blog?
We should keep politics out the Olympics!!!!!!
Good for you McCain - you are the SMART guy.
I was a athletes many years ago, please do not apply sports with the sickens of political gain.
Maybe Obama made copy of his favor president MR Carter(communist) and go after the President as if Mr Bush is running for 3er time , the movement and hatred of the left wing is so high that they will feel very happy to destroy this Country before give him any credit
For some reason I don’t see the news about McCain chaning his time-table to 16 months to remove the soliders? That not a news FOX?
With the terrorist threats I’m in favor of boycotting the Olympics entirely. Let China’s problem remain in China and simply not get involved and make them ours.
***** THIS IS NEWS********
WASHINGTON — Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens allegedly made false statements to cover up gifts given to him by an oil contractor seeking his help on Capitol Hill, according to a seven-count federal indictment charging Stevens obtained Tuesday.
Stevens, 84, is the longest-serving Republican in the Senate and has been under investigation for more than a year, with a heavy focus on work done to his Girdwood, Alaska, ski-community home.

This is just another typical Republican who needs not to be in office. One has to say the “Republican” Brand has really suffered recently.
It is odd indeed that a story on the Olympics has been sullied with politics; a subject that should have not one thing to do with the Olympics.
I’m sorry to hear that Sen. McCain said he wouldn’t go if he were President. THE OLYMPICS ARE HELD FOR THE ATHLETES NOT POLITICIANS. The athletes make a lot of sacrifices to be named to their country’s team and it is their achievements that we are there to watch and applaud. Why do politicians feel the need to take every facet of life away from us and turn the focus on themselves? The Olympics are not political games- if they were just picture Pelosi running the 100 yard dash, Reid doing the 400 yd dash, and Schumer doing the 4×4 with Clinton, Edwards and Biden.
You know I find it kind of ironic that the same people now who are most outspoken about the atrocities of the Chinese government in regards to human rights now, remained silent a few years ago when President Clinton gave away the Long Beach Naval shipyard to this same Chinese Government. Where was the outcry then?
I suppose US athletes do not mean as much to McCain as US military personnel. I suppose the Americans who attend and compete in the Games are unpatriotic in his mind. What an idiot.
