McCain at German Restaurant while Obama is in Germany

Columbus, OH–

While Barack Obama spoke in front of hundreds of thousands in Berlin today, John McCain visited a German restaurant here. He jabbed his opponent for his speech on foreign soil while he is still a candidate, “Well I’d love to give a speech in Germany to– a political speech –or a speech that maybe the German people would be interested in,” McCain told reporters, “But I would much prefer to do it as president of the United States rather than as a candidate for the office of the presidency.”

The Republican nominee-in-waiting says he is focusing on campaigning in America—another not so subtle jab at his rival, “And so we’re gonna be campaigning across the heartland of America and talking about the issues that are challenging America today.”

The McCain campaign put out a statement after Obama’s speech today pushing the same themes as the candidate did–that Obama is acting as though he is already the president while McCain is focused on average Americans:

“While Barack Obama took a premature victory lap today in the heart of Berlin, proclaiming himself a ‘citizen of the world,’ John McCain continued to make his case to the American citizens who will decide this election,” Spokesperson Tucker Bounds said in an e-mailed statement, “Barack Obama offered eloquent praise for this country, but the contrast is clear. John McCain has dedicated his life to serving, improving and protecting America. Barack Obama spent an afternoon talking about it.”

McCain made his comments after visiting Schmidt’s Restaurant and Sausage Haus where he ordered chocolate puffs and had lunch with local small business owners discussing the economy, health care, and rising gas prices.

John McCain will participate in the LIVESTRONG summit this evening—a town hall focused on cancer with seven-time Tour de France winner and cancer survivor Lance Armstrong. Tomorrow he will be meeting with exiled Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama. McCain says he looks forward to the meeting tomorrow, “ I have been a great admirer of the Dalai Lama and I look forward to the opportunity of meeting an individual who is a transcendent international role model and hero and I have admired him and respected him for the efforts he’s made on behalf of freedom of the people of Tibet but also all over the world.”

The meeting will be at a conference on Tibetan culture in Aspen, Colorado.

Give me a break McCain, I’m no Obama supporter, but after seeing McCain cry like a wooped step child, I may switch! Grow up John McLame

“We report, you decide.” Hey fox you need to stick to your moto and report what really happened at todays obama speech. There was a thunder of applause that could be heard throughout berlin. That speech was nothign less than inspiring. This president has led more in his campaign than the bush administration has led in 8 years. Now, all of a sudden, bush is trying to create a withdrawl plan from iraq, and a surge in afganistan. Obama puts pressure on the entire world to be better and thats exactly thre leadership we need as a president.

Didn’t he (McCain) gave a speech in Canada? I think he should just keep his mouth shut. Everytime he complains….. He reminds me of his adviser Dr Phil Gramm.

I’m a republican…and I cannot believe what a baby McCain is…unbelievable!

Comment by Don Vanderhoef

Hmm- first McCain criticizes Obama for not visiting Irag . . . now that he has, and has met with such sucess… criticism for doing this? Guess he should be careful about what he publically wishes for….

safe place to be rather than out making a fool of yourself like obama: making a new world, he means new world “order” where the mexicans and blacks get preferential treatment and we get the hell taxed out of us because many of us are in business for ourselves or sucessful in other ways. That’s the new world he’s talking about: reparations, redistribution of wealth…that is exactly what Obama is talking aboutl screw the white sucessful people!!

“Barack Obama is wrong. It is never inappropriate to visit our men and women in the military.”

B.O. _ is inappropriate ! just ask ‘Old Spice’ -

SO remember BO is not ‘wright’ for America, it would be ‘farr’ to say that an American ‘Khan’

McCain’s a crybaby. Like Bush and Graham.

I guess Mccain has forgotten that he went to Canada to make a speech. What a hypocrite.

Awesome. McCain is focusing on issues that affect all Americans like hanging out with Lance Armstrong (who is raising enough money through his foundation without McCain’s help) and speaking with the Dalai Lama while Obama is focusing on issues that don’t affect Americans like solidarity between us and our allies with regards to the war on terror and the future of our planet’s climate.

Just Awesome.

The McCain campaign is proving to be increasingly incompetent.
It’s so obvious in his missteps and blundering untrue statements,
that he’s out of touch with the American poeple and the
factual data in the war on terror. Even if you completely disagree
with Obama you have to admit, Obama has the more compelling
message and is masterful in communicating it. The McCain
campaign looks like he’s running for Mayor and Obama looks
like he’s running to be the leader of the free world.

McCain needs to find a message instead of attacking Obama.
Juvenile cheap shots and half empty town halls aren’t going
to work, even for a republican candidate.

Wow , I guess Obama is now qualified in international affairs and now also has the experience to run this country because he traveled and shook a few hands and made his usual empty pandering speeches. This sure did alot to convince me he is my choice now. How stupid does he AGAIN think Americans are? Wonder what the far left is going to do next to boost his ratings in the polls, which are still falling. When will they understand they can’t undo or remove what this guy has done and said and really is. We want to raise America up to all its God given greatness and glory not let it continue to spiral down where Obama and the far left want to take it. And Nancy Pelosi is one of them also who hopefully this coming election will be removed.

Comment by Lee

It’s too bad that John McCain’s major commentary all of this week has been about his opponent. He’s looking less and less Presidential, and more and more like his next job is going to be a news commentator on the next President. It leaves me with the feeling that the Republicans have nothing to offer… so all they can do is make it a referendum on Obama. If that’s the case, we’ll have to see if America votes for Obama or “Other.”

Funny, he asks Obama to go overseas, and then when he does he complains that he went overseas. It would be great if McCain would go to Germany and give a speech of his own, and then we can compare the impact the two men have on foriegn affairs. But, given the amazing work Obama did, I suspect McCain would be advised not to follow in his footsteps.

Comment by Geoff

I am a huge McCain fan. I think he’s flip-flopping here though. He told Obama that he should go check out Europe and the Middle East. Obama just doin what he is told. Can’t criticize him for it. It isnn’t his fault that he’s so popular with the furriners.

Comment by Mr.X

“Obama is acting as though he is already the president”

A Freudian slip from the Republican McCain?

I suppose if one were to model him/herself after president Bush this would make more sense.

I kind of like to see a presidential candidate who will focus on the big picture rather than hanging around and kissing butt!
As a non-racist white middle aged male, I am impressed by Obama!

Comment by Randy

Obama campaigns in Germany, probably hoping that his party can somehow get the citizens of Germany to vote in the US elections just like how his party is getting the citizens of Mexico to vote is US elections.

Comment by Kathy P.

Here, here! What is this a candidate pretending tha the is already the president. How presumptious will this man get. Go McCain……

Comment by john

People should wake up from this right-left paradigm and realize our country is being robbed by both sides. For those who worship at the altar of Senator McSame, please consider this man graduated 894 out of 899 from the academy and then proceeded to crash 5 planes in his short career (In short, he shouldn’t have been flying at all). I guess it’s good to be the Admiral’s son. And don’t forget his family values…ditching his wife who waited for him all through the war for a pretty young rich thing that had the purse strings to launch his political career. It’s amazing that C students or worse are good enough for a party that once stood for excellence. Buck the system, join no party and think for yourself.

This man is so stupid, this whole idea is stupid. No leadership, no intelligence, saying absolutely nothing. At least get people inspired draw a normal crowd talk about the economy, somthing. Even his adds don’t make a dent. What a crying shame for McCain. He’s so lost. Some one please help this senile man to find himself

McCain eating chocolate puffs and whining to a crowd of 20 people in a german diner.

Obama speaks to two hundred thousand Germans waving American flags while he talks about what makes America great.

Bush couldn’t draw 100 German supporters on his good-bye tour.

We don’t need another Bush term with McSame.

President Obama 2009.

Comment by SteveP

Actually, this is quite fitting. Obama is touring the Mid-East and Europe to build is Foreign Policy credentials, while McCain is focusing on the American Heartland to build is Economic credentials.

Both candidates are trying to bolster their images in areas where people see them as being the weakest. But seriously, is’t Obama so much more entertaining to watch?

Comment by NJ Bttm

Did McCain forget his own overseas trip in March to Iraq, Jordan, Israel, Great Britain, and France? Yes McCain went with other senators, but he was and is the presumptive nominee of the Republican party. Had Romney won the nomination would McCain still have made the trip? I think not. Obama’s trip is in no way different from McCain’s trip. And of course Obama is going to draw large crowds wherever he goes, he doesn’t look like any of the previous presidential candidates.

Comment by Omar

Obama showed us that an American leader can give a speech in a foreign country like Germany and not be heckled or protested against in record numbers like Bush has been in the past. He is showing us that he is a leader, the world will respect and admire. Someone we need as leader of our great country. We have had enough fools and mindless morons at the helm…McCain is just the same thing as Bush only a different name, and possibly even more nuts.

Comment by Debra

I am glad to read and hear that Sen. McCain is campaigning here in the states. Did Omaba make a mistake for what office he is running for? Since when do we care if Germany or any other country like who the American people vote for as their president? Are you sure he isn’t running for the President of the United Nations? Someone send Obama a memo!

Comment by Jay Slone

The reason why Obama gets coverage is that he is doing something newsworthy. What is JM doing. He best begin to engage in this race. Photo opp in a golf cart with GB senior. Cut me a break.

Comment by Rickymo

What a snore. I do agree there is more media attention on Obama but it is because Mc Cain is boooooorrrrrring not that it is media bias. Watch if and when Mc Cain does something monumental (which will never happen) all of the media will be all over it!

McCain told reporters, “But I would much prefer to do it as president of the United States rather than as a candidate for the office of the presidency.”

Then why did you give a speech in Canada last month. Another misspeak of did he forget.

Comment by Dale Davis, Glendora, California

Gee! So good to know that he assumes he’s going to be the next president and will be working for the world. What a presumptious maneuver on the part of the Obama campaign. The image maker machinery is working overtime, from Hollywood to New York, to prop this poster child of socialism up to the world. I lived in Europe for several years and rest assured, the vast majority of the people at that rally in Deutschland were stark socialists to the core. Aren’t we, the American people paying the president to work for us, instead of the world? I fear the majority of the American voters will be suckered into ushering in a one-sided American government, without checks and balances. Conservatism will be doomed. The press has put on a full court press to squelch any opposition to Obama. We live in a scary time.

Comment by Chris

It is nice airs ads to talk about what McCain has done as a veteran, When you attack Obama, McCain has not told the American people his plans specifically rather than attacking. We should not also forget that McCain supported the surge from the beginning just as he supported going to Iraq from the beginning, even when there was no weapons of mass destructions. In as much as we respect McCain service, McCain may not tell the American people if he took a nap on the plane that is how his plane was brought down during Vietnam War, just like the missiles staff that slept off on duty today.
Attacking will not bring down the gas prices neither will it restore the American world leadership/respect as it use to be. Saying Obama will rather loose the war than to win election is out of touch, it show the desperations RNC/McCain.

Comment by John Savis

Partisanship aside, at least mention that McCain actually did speak in a foreign country (Canada) in June while campaigning for his presidential bid. The trip was funded out of campaign money and there’s not a single critical news story on any news network suggesting that McCain’s decision to speak in another country was inappropriate. Both candidates have done the deed–please have be fair and balanced and acknowledge those facts.

Thank you Sen. McCain for campaigning with the American people. We know that you will listen and focus on what is right for America and not the whole world. You are showing respect for the office you seek and the American people. You don’t need to go and give a speech where Presidents have spoken and mold their words into yours.

The scene of John McCain in front of the shelves of cheese was very appropriate. He is cheesy! I am a 71 yr old Republican female and he puts me to sleep with his monotone ramblings. I am excited over Barrack Obama and will vote for him! He has the ability to reinstate our respect in the world and will make a great President for the United States.

Comment by Patrice Hawkins

McCain should emphasize the decision made by Obama not to visit the
troops. It appears that Obamas decision was made because he could not
politicise his visit, and thus he chose to exercise rather than visit
with the troops in private. What kind of person is Obama, if he will
only participate in activities that can be politicized? Are the
wounded troops not important enough to visit, even if there is no
photo opportunities to report back to the US? Why not? This would have
been a great opportunity for Obama to prove that his moves were not
politically motivated.

This confirms my conviction that Obama is calculated and has a facade
that he puts on for the benefit of getting elected.

Comment by Rudy NYC

Cheese and whine. Another original idea from McCain.

I’m starting to get disturbed by McCain’s constant whining about Obama, and rarely anything of substance about issues. He’s gonna lose more votes because of his talking points, or lack of, than anything else. He should have simply rode the week out and thought about what he wanted to say. Held a few private fund raisers. Granted up-close and personal interviews with the media. Anything but cheeses and whines.
