McCain hopes Obama “gets the message” on Iraq

WARREN, MI — As Sen. Barack Obama gets ready to leave for his foreign trip next week, his Republican rival had some departing words for him Friday.

“This trip that he is on would have been vastly different if we had done what Senator Obama wanted to do and that is he wanted to withdraw, he opposed the surge,” Sen. John McCain said at a press conference following a town hall meeting at a General Motors technology center.

“I hope he gets the message this time that we have succeeded and we need to continue the strategy and if we had done what he wanted to do, it would have been a very different Iraq that he is visiting…there would be chaos, there would be an increase in sectarian violence, there would be widening Iranian influence and we would be facing disaster, certainly if not disaster, a lost war,” he added.

McCain has hammered Obama repeatedly in recent days as the Illinois Democrat prepares for his much-publicized trip abroad, though he maintained today that he will not allow Obama to set the tone of the coverage next week.

“I am basing my campaign on our own campaign,”  he said when asked how he hopes to remain in the spotlight. Campaign advisers add that McCain will push his economic message next week but will also chime in as Obama visits the Middle East and Europe.

“I hope he gets the message this time that we have succeeded …”

Typical McCain-speak. Succeeded at what? Bringing down the violence in select areas of Iraq? Yes, the surge has done that. Succeeded in getting closer to success in the Iraq war? Hmmm… can Sen. McCain coherently define what that means? What does this success look like? How will we know it when it happens? By what metrics will this success be measured?

It is time that we as a country get beyond these platitudes and sound-bite phrases. We haven’t succeeded in making our country safer. We haven’t succeeded in caring for the welfare of the citizenry.

Sen. McCain, please. Either explain how you are going to lead this great nation out of the economic/security fiasco that the Bush administration has gotten us in to, or go back to the senate.

I hope McCain gets the message that it’s not over till it’s over: until our troops are out of Iraq and we leave behind a stable country with a populace that is not a war with itself or its neigbors and with a government that can govern the unified nation for the common good.

We are still a long way off from that.

Comment by jaike

Maybe McCain could “get the message” on Iraq and Iran considering their president wants a time table withdrawal, Bush and Iraq agreed today to reduce troop headcount, Its been said that we want to establish an embassy in Tehran, and talking to Iran about their nuclear program.

Why is it that everything Obama has proposed and McCain gaffed at, Bush is doing right now???

Comment by Adam

yeah, and if we had done what Obama wanted to do 5 years ago we wouldn’t be in this mess! when will McCain get that message???

Comment by NinaK

Well, I hope that in McCain “chiming in” during Senator Obama’s overseas trip, he can control himself and deal with the ISSUES only and refrain from PERSONAL attacks! Afterall, it does look like Senator from Illinois will be our next President. If McCain bashes Obama during this trip, it will enhance the already pathetic and full of bluster persona which McCain actually is. McCain had two media members with him on his trips, yet he is wah, wah, wahing that Obama has three anchors. (Mommy, you gave Obama three cookies, how come you only gave me two!! Wah, Wah), no fair, no fair!) McCain is NOT an interesting candidate, he is NOT enthusiastic, he is NOT inspirational. Watch his speeches, DULL! Watch his audiences: They look like they are attending a funeral. Of course, the media wants to join Senator Obama on his overseas trip!! They are enthusiastic and excited and want to record history. I see absolutely NOTHING wrong with that! It’s kind of like a football game, everyone has their eye on the quarterback and not on the catcher. McCain is acting out “envy”. At age 71, near 72, he should know better than that!! He first bashes Obama for not having gone to Iraq more than once, and to Afghanistan, now that Senator Obama is taking his trip, McCain cries “foul” and bashes him for going!! Wow, talk about being hypocritical!! Flippity Floppity, Flippity-Floppity, Flip-Flop McCain, as the world turns!!

Let Obama do his work.

Presumptive judgment and preemptive advice or critique makes no sense. This kind of “experience” will bring no good for America’s future; give America a break. It is absurd of Mr. McCain to “know” or even think what the message may be. He already has thicker glasses, likley obstructing his vision.

How can you expect someone who has blinders on to see the truth and believe that the surge has worked and his decision from 1 year ago to simply leave was wrong…Obama will never admit for he would be cast aside by his base….Obama has to totally understand the importance of what has instilled in Iraq. But alas….Obama is no different that Pelosi…totally against Iraq and most any attempt to control aggressively the war on terror thus is Obama is elected the war on terror will become a whimper…it will be no war or even an aggressive action and with that I fear for the safety of all americans.

Comment by John from CA

No, if we done what Obama had wanted we wouldn’t be in this mess in Iraq in the first place, and we would have had the focus to actually get Osama bin Ladin and Al Qaeda instead of attacking a country that was not a threat to us, and had nothing to do with Al Qaeda or 9/11.

It was McCain who predicted we’d be welcomed as liberators.

That’s really funny, I’ve been waiting for McCain to “get the message” on Iraq. When the heck are these guys going to get it right on our economy? Oh wait I forgot, we are a nation of whiners!

Senator John McCain is America’s last, best, hope. Only he has the highly valued military know-how. He has stepped on all his other GOP opponents for this reason! With over twenty years of congressional experience, he knows how to do things to uplift the government. He is striving for green-technology. He has a strong plan to right America’s financial woes. Under his guidance, the United States can regain its position within the global community. God Bless John McCain, our troops, and the United States of America

Comment by Patricia

When McCain makes comments like this, it makes him sound as if he is guessing and that he is unsure of himself. I trust his military insight less and less.

Comment by Frances

McCain is the one who needs to get the message, back in 2004, he said if Iraq had a sovereign government and they wanted us out we should get out and now that there are both of those, he thinks we should stay? McCain that would be considered an occupation.

Comment by tubette

Yes, hopefully the trip will confirm what the people of Iraq want… a timetable for withdrawing troops.
If we have succeeded , then it’s time to wind it down.

Comment by Jay Taylor

Mc Cain should leave immediately for Iraq. He should be on the tarmack when Obama lands in Baghdad. He then could say Senator you said you would debate me anytime, anywhere on Iraq, Afganistan, Iran, Al Queada. Obama made that statement several times yet he continues to dodge Sen. McCain on this issue.
Well what better place for that debate than in front of the troops in the Green Zone?
If Obama refuses in front of his Entourage of his loyal press core? He looses!
If he accepts and talks withdrawal and retreat. He looses.
Perfect Opportunity to put him away. Also it would save millions in election ad costs as he would be done.

Obama will never get the message since he has blinders on…McCain is simply wasting his time even suggesting that Obama desires to see the real truth….which is also a big NO. Obama’s only truth is what the far left liberal types and Soros desires him to have…he is totally a puppet of the far left types and will never say one thing that is against THEIR platform.

i do not understand how a candidate for president can visit world leaders. he is not a representative of our government, he is a candidate. he cannot speak for the American people, because he is not elected to office. it is not appropriate. he can darned well read and talk to people to learn what he needs to know. (which he already should have done). We are achieving the goals for Iraq, and his visit is silly.

Comment by Renee

Why would McCain mention when Obama would probably be in Iraq. Such information should not have been mentioned and he should know better given the fact that he has so much “experience”.
His mean spirit and pettiness never ceases to amaze me. He wants to be elected no matter what. I doubt very much if he would apprectiate someone giving information about the location of his son. He really does not have the temperment or the character to be President.

Comment by Jim of lakeland

I was just reading an AP article how Obama’s “itinerary in the war zones was a closely guarded secret”. That doesn’t seem to be in line with his parties stance on a publicly announced fixed date for the Iraq withdrawal. Maybe it only matters if a Democrat’s life is at stake in lieu of an Iraqi Citizen’s life or one of our greatest assets, the American defender.

sorry for McCain but obama has his mind made up. this trip is just a photo opportunity for obama he just want to silence his critics like McCain. and if he change his mind it will look like a flip-flop.

Hmmmm, interesting that so many world leaders are willing to meet with Senator Obama . . . it’s almost like they think he’s the next President of the United States or something . . .

(I kinda got that feeling too!)

P.S. Maybe Senator McCain should have gone with Senator Obama on this trip - then he could stop whining about not getting enough coverage!

Not getting enough coverage is the best thing that ever happened to him - considering all the nonsensical things he says!

Wonder why we don’t hear about him balancing the budget in his first term anymore . . . hmmmmmm . . .

Comment by Card Carrying Republican

I’m a bit concerned lately about the weight of the issues that our next president will have to face. While I have voted Republican for years, I am beginning to realize that McCain has no idea how to deal with foreign policy and with our economy (he has admitted that he does not understand our current financial and real estate crisis … and he has admitted that he does not understand the roots of our recession. I guess it would be tough to expect someone who has been very, very wealthy for a very, very long time to understand what the average, white American like me is facing. I hope we make it through this and God will ultimately lead the way, but we also need good policies and McCain seems incapable of delivering on that.

I am beginning to finally realize that Republican politicians do not at all stand for those things that help the middle class, average American. Republican politicians stand for enriching other wealthy people like themselves. Their tax policy is no way helps me and other average Americans … it is a party that stands for furthering the cause of other wealthy people on Wall Street, our Plastic Surgeons, our Corporate Attorneys, and our Business Executives.

I can’t pull myself to vote for Obama, but I plan to stay at home and not vote this time. Who knows, maybe Obama will continue to show that he is fighting for average, middle-class Americans …I can’t see it now, but I may vote for him.

If anyone shares my thoughts or can help me as I think through these thoughts, please feel free to email me back. God bless you and God Bless America.

I hope Mr. Barack Hussein Obama get the real situation in Iraq. The troop surge is working the untimely withdrawal which Sen. Barack Hussein Obama support is out of context. This shown plain and simple that Sen. Barack Hussein Obama is not fitted to be the commander-in-chief for this great country.

He is so naive, inexperienced, just good on rhetoric and no action.

Sen. John McCain for president 2008!!!

Comment by janey

It’s great that Pres Bush has made it safe enough for the likes of Obama to go to Iraq safely. Apparently, the coward Obama was waiting until the surge accomplished that goal. Now he will use this trip to slam the very person who protected him! What a calculating man.

McCain,

If we would have done what he wanted and voted for we would not be in this war with a country that did us no harm. Get real you made the worste judgment call in decades. This war has done nothing but kill innocent people, kill brave soldiers and injures thousands, destroyed our image and economy even when the Iraq goverment wants you to put out you continue in wanting to stay longer. I dont understand how the American people can be so easily influenced, even with all of your experience Obama was right this whole time face the facts.

How can people say McCain has Military know how? He’s not a hero he’s just a bad pilot.

Folks saying Obama has no experience you may be right but Obama didn’t get where he is by handouts or by marrying a rich wife. McCain graduated very very close to last in his class from the academy. Obama is by far the smarter and harder worker and if I’m hiring someone to work for me I’d rather have a smart and hard worker then someone who has had everything handed to them in life. Look at our last Pres. Not smart and not a hard worker. He was on vacation the majority of his terms. He was also on vacation the whole time leading up to 9/11.

Comment by Mike

Hey GG -
Do you really think your class rank when you are a kid in high school or college is what defines your future capability? Also, did you know that McCain signed a pre-nup agreement before he married his wife (ie, her money does NOT become his as a result of their marriage)? Further, are you aware that Obama joined that awful, racist church because of the political advancement opportunities it would give him in the black community? Now, THAT is what I call being “handed” an opportunity. I don’t think Bush is any Einstein either, but Bush’s 2001 vacation certainly did not cause the 911 attacks. Give us a break, and stop reading the liberal brainwash. You have a mind of your own.

Comment by Frances

I am now convinced that McCain truly is not really that knowledgable on foreign policy. First not knowing Shia and Sunni, who is training who, identifying Iranian extremists as Al Queda terrorists, repeating Czechoslavakia as a country, when it has not been in existance for some time. This morning on Good Morning America with Diane Sawyer, asked by Diane Sawyer whether the “the situation in Afghanistan in precarious and urgent,” McCain responded: “I think it’s serious. . . . It’s a serious situation, but there’s a lot of things we need to do. We have a lot of work to do and I’m afraid it’s a very hard struggle, particularly given the situation on the Iraq/Pakistan border.” “Iraq and Pakistan do not share a border. Afghanistan and Pakistan do.” Remember he finished at the bottom five of his military class.

What is this guy talking about??? Just because you say “MISSION ACCOMPLISHED” doesn’t make it true. Just ask Bush. I’m from Texas and I now see what the Dixie Chicks were talking about. This guy has been an embarrasment to our state and this country. Now the Republicans have the audacity to put some one with the same failed policies up for election. What is this experience that this guy has. He was pilot 40 years ago and he screwed that up…he got shot down. One of the main goals as a pilot is to keep the plane in the air and not get captured. He screwed both of those things up. This guy doesn’t even realize that Chechslovakia is no longer a country and hasn’t been for almost two decades. If elected how is he going to have the mental capacity to keep up at 71. Anything happens after 7:00 p.m. who is gonna be making the decisions? The drug addict, home wrecker Cindy?

Comment by Doe Eyes

McCain stated today on Good Morning America that violence had escalated on the “Iraqi” and “Pakistani” border. Last I checked, these two do not share a border. McCain needs to stop trying to steal the spotlight from Obama because McCain is always the one who suffers the most for it; just one gaffe after another. We all remember McCain’s green screen moment…Sunni vs. Shia… referring to a modern day Czechoslovakia that hasn’t existed for over 15 years…and this is from the man who claims to have all of the foreign experience. Heaven help us all if this man becomes commander in chief.

TO THE CARD CARRYING REPUBLICAN——
There is something happening when Americans who are young in age and in spirit – who have never before participated in politics – turn out in numbers we’ve never seen because they know in their hearts that this time must be different.
There is something happening when people vote not just for the party they belong to but the hopes they hold in common – that whether we are rich or poor; black or white; Latino or Asian; whether we hail from Iowa or New Hampshire, Nevada or South Carolina, we are ready to take this country in a fundamentally new direction. That is what’s happening in America right now. Change is what’s happening in America.
You can be the new majority who can lead this nation out of a long political darkness – Democrats, Independents and Republicans who are tired of the division and distraction that has clouded Washington; who know that we can disagree without being disagreeable; who understand that if we mobilize our voices to challenge the money and influence that’s stood in our way and challenge ourselves to reach for something better, there’s no problem we can’t solve – no destiny we cannot fulfill. Our new American majority can end the outrage of unaffordable, unavailable health care in our time. We can bring doctors and patients; workers and businesses, Democrats and Republicans together; and we can tell the drug and insurance industry that while they’ll get a seat at the table, they don’t get to buy every chair. Not this time. Not now.
Our new majority can end the tax breaks for corporations that ship our jobs overseas and put a middle-class tax cut into the pockets of the working Americans who deserve it.
We can stop sending our children to schools with corridors of shame and start putting them on a pathway to success. We can stop talking about how great teachers are and start rewarding them for their greatness. We can do this with our new majority.
We can harness the ingenuity of farmers and scientists; citizens and entrepreneurs to free this nation from the tyranny of oil and save our planet from a point of no return.

“The Republican candidate said that in any event, He would not allow democrats to try to destroy the United States.”

“Asked about the democrats feeling the need to destroy America, McCain replied, “I would hope that would never happen,” saying the democratic congress could impose “significant, very painful sanctions on the American people which they think could modify their behavior.”

He added, “But I have to look you in the eye and tell you that the Rebublicans of America can never allow a democratic instigated Holocaust of our freedoms, and our way of life.”

To White Independent:

Yes, there is something happening. It is called Socialism… You will be told what you can drive, how you can drive, who will educate your children, what they will believe in, when you can have surgery, and how much money you are worthy of earning.

That is the beginning of the wrong kind of change and a change I won’t participate in.

No matter if Obama gets elected, He will never be my President he’s been too cozy with some pretty radical elements in his past.

Card Carrying Republican:

Did you know the richest politicans per capita in Washington are Democrats? Yep that’s right if you lined up the top 15 wealthiest politicians you would find that 80% of the richest are Dems.
Sad but true. Liberal philosophies dictated by rich liberals generally cause increased taxes on the middle class. The only way to prevent such a disaster is to be shrewd and study all side of the coin.

Fundamental Republican Conservatism is not a bad thing when its practiced. But when one party gains control of every branch of government bad things tend to happen and self serving greed and piggishness kicks in. In the case of any party remember this. “Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutly. If we give the keys to the White House to the democrats expect the same things from them that we got from the Republicans. “Absolute Power and absolute corruption”.

Our economy is in the shape it is in because our elected officials have deregulated everything under the sun and you now have to think for your self and survive on your own cunning and ability. That is unless you want to live under Socialism. In which case the government thinks for you and tells you what you are allowed to have and how much you are allowed to have.

I prefer to think for myself but it requires due diligence and a daily does of a lot of gloom and doom. The saddest part is that if the American public is told something long enough it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. I have heard 8 years of gloom and doom in a full fleged attempt to push the American people into this so called change that is coming.

Me I prefer to move what little I have managed to save and also all of my investments off shore so the Democratic Socialist government can’t take it from me in the name of giving to those more needy.

Comment by JM Stephens

I too hope mr. Obama gets the message aboout Iraq. I find it very interesting that the politicians always say that the Iraqi people “want” to take more responsibility for thier country, yet the men and women on the ground repeatedly say that this is not the case at all. Mr. Obama appears to be full of that stuff that stinks to high heaven and is usually brown. In addition to not supporting Obama anymore I no longer support any candidate and have lost all faith in our politicians.
