Romney’s Riches Won’t Be Reimbursed

Mitt Romney will not seek to be repaid for the 45 million dollars of personal loans that he made to his presidential campaign. The funds were the largest personal contribution by a candidate made during the primaries, but he will not ask or fundraise for donations to repay the debt.

The former presidential candidate’s Press Secretary, Eric Fehrnstrom said Romney’s “priority right now is raising money for other Republicans.” He has been actively campaigning for John McCain and speculation continues to rage that he will be the GOP nominee’s Vice-Presidential pick.

Fehrnstrom confirmed that he is not trying to recoup the funds and will write a letter to the Federal Election Committee explaining his decision, “At some point, the Romney loans will be reclassified as contributions. The way that will happen is the Governor will write a letter forgiving the outstanding loans,” Fehrnstrom explained through an e mail message, “That will occur around the time Romney for President is ready to shut down, when all the bills are paid and the books are balanced.”

The Romney camp still has no specific date set for when this will happen.

During his failed presidential bid, Romney also raised more than 65 million dollars from donors and his ability to fundraise is one way he could help McCain as his running mate and a reason that is used to boost his chances as a Vice-Presidential pick. Yesterday, on Fox News Romney refused to tell Martha MacCallum if he was discussing the number two slot with the GOP nominee-in –waiting, “We talk about a wide array of topics, and I enjoy talking to him, but there is no speculation to report on that.”

On the Democratic side, Hillary Clinton also donated her own funds to her campaign lending 12.2 million dollars to her presidential bid, but she is actively seeking donations to help get the money back. Barack Obama has even asked supporters to help pay down her debt, coming under fire when many asked why they should help pay back money she used to attack the candidate they support.

Important to note, though, the personal wealth of the two politicians are drastically different. Romney’s fortune is estimated at 250 million dollars, while Clinton’s wealth is estimated to be between 10 and 50 million dollars,.

Romney is a class act. It is to bad he is not the Republican nominee. Hopefull these two parties get their act together and have the primary elections on one day like the general election so that all Americans voice’s are heard. That way the election is not decided before it gets to all of the states.

Very Mature of Romney. He took a gamble and he accepts the cost. Hillary should do the same. She chose to stay in when she knew it was over. Shame on her to ask for money when most of us are trying to figure out how to keep our homes and pay bills. She should step up to the plate she ate from and pay for the meal she chose to cunsume!

I am an independent supporting Senator Obama’s candidacy. Yet, I have always been intriqued by Mitt Romney. In truth he is not a great politician but I do think that he has a a substantive skill set which would be more useful as Chief Executive than John McCain. Romney, in forgiving his own loans to the campaign, is making the morally and ethically right decision. It shows a degree of class that he is not soliciting his donors to help him get rid of his debt. In the current economic climate where many Americans are dealing with economic stress and financial uncertainty, it is the height of hypocrisy for Hillary Clinton to hit up small donors to pay down her campaign debt. Has the woman no shame? Even if Hillary were to write off $11 million or ask Mark Penn to take a haircut on his debt, that would be far more responsible than asking working Americans to help a multimillionaire pay down her debt. If Hillary writes off $11 million dollars she is still a multimillionaire. Anybody who writes a check to Hillary Clinton at this point needs to have their head examined. Hillary should follow Romney’s lead and eat the loss. Hillary is principally responsible for her loss and should bear the consequences.

Romney will bring in the polygamist vote. If the husbands allow all their wives to vote, McCain is a sure bet for the presidency.

Interesting how selfish the mormons are portrayed to be, yet here, an example of what they are ‘really’ like. TJ STELTON blogged correct, honorable people ‘accept’ their actions and take REAL responsibility, unlike Hillary Duff
-
Why do we just not accept ourselves, the fact that Mitt was a great canidate, and push for McCain to run with him so that Romney can teach him principles that will thwart our country into a successful nation?

Comment by Matthew

I agree with the previous comments. Mitt Romney has demonstrated great responsibility for the campaign he waged. Hillary should swallow her losses. Other people that ask for money to repay their debts are called pan-handlers. The only difference is that there is a lot more money involved and Hillary is famous. It is interesting to me that Hillary is willing to spend other people’s money to get herself to the White House, but she wants to be repaid for her own contribution to her campaign. Maybe now that she’s lost, others could ask for their money back also….That would be the day!

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints will give him whatever he wants… they are worth tens of billions.

Someday you will all worship a mormon god or you will not go to heaven.

Ridiculous Republican self-sucking to compare Romney’s and Clinton’s situations. I’m a lifelong Republican, but will vote Democrat if Romney is the Vice Presidential nominee. Can’t put a fanatical religious extremeist cult member a(n) (old) heartbeat away from the Presidency. Think it through carefully McCain. Your chance is slim. Don’t give the election away with a ridiculous Vice Presidential nominee.

I have always been impressed by Romney and how he responds to things. it only makes sense that if you compete for something, you better be ready to handle the cost. He is an astute businessman and understands that you can not have Americans foot the bill that you have created. That’s the mark of a leader. I hope that MCain will choose him for the VP slot. That will soothee the conservatives who went for Romney during the primaries.

What a class act this man is. I hope someday he will run again.

McCain/Romney ‘08. Yes, I agree, Mitt Romney is a class person and I am a republican who will vote for MCain regardless, but if Romney is on the ticket, even better. God Bless Romney and his family, an American family.

McCain should pick Rommey for his business knowledge not not on his faith!! Althought the values that Rommey bring to the ticket will be a excellent choice!!

Comment by DENNIS DITTFIELD

Mitt not only be a great choice of VP, he will bring the business mind that McCain needs, family value that this county!! Being a convert to the Mormon faith, we believe in Jesus Christ, I think any one who believe otherwises has been miss led!!!

Ahh, nothing like an upbeat article about a man taking responsibility for his own actions to bring out religious bigotry. HAHA. No wonder the country is going down the tubes. As opposed to judging a man by his actions one judges him according to what one has heard about what he may or may not believe. I love how people tell the world what Romeny believes, yet don’t trust him when he tells the world what he believes.
But a minor note about the article. I am pleased to hear that he is absorbing his own debt rather than trying to place that burden on himself. That would make him way to much like a democtrac, Obama, Clinton, Huckabee and all other who don’t want to pay their own way. Also Romeny’s worth was mentioned to be around $250 million, while an impressive figure, doesn’t quite make it to the mark. If you read Hugh Hewitt’s book about Romney, he is estimated to be worth between $600 million and $1 billion. Just food for thought.

I think that Romney is the Man and he played very smart during the primaries. He is allowed to dispurse his own funds however he feels. Good Job Romney! You made an honorable decision…and unlike the other Candidates who can’t even back themselves up financially, like he did…. instead of fully relying on public funds to pull them through (etc: Hillary, Obama, McCain), I think Mitt Romney made the Romney voters very proud. It just shows how great of a President he would have been. He is very selfless and would definitely be the medicine that this country needs at this time and era. If McCain wants to play his cards right, he will choose Romney for VP. Though I’m not a big McCain fan, I think it is so important that all Conservatives remember the big picture and get out there and vote for our Republican candidate…that is McCain. He stands more for what and who we are as Americans. Obama just looks good, but has nothing to back him up…he is too inexperienced and will say anything to get the American vote. People let’s get out there and vote! cheers :) joey

Mitt Romney is the perfect choice as the VP candidate…I hope Senator McCain, whom I will vote for in spite of his more liberal positions to support of ANY any Socialistic, oops, Democratic opponent…Mr. Romney is a trouble shooter and WE ARE IN TROUBLE! Senator McCain, please choose him; Mr. Romney, please accept- YOU TOGETHER MAKE A WINNING TEAM!!!!

Nancy Pelosi, wake up! YOU are ineffective, embarrassing and a menace to the US. Senator McCain has worked successfully WITH the Democrats…get the Congress off the pause button and ACT on behalf of the people…oh, the PEOPLE? Have you forgotten them?

God bless the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!

Romney as VP would renew my excitement and optimism for the future. There has not been a man with more integrity, family values, experience, humility, and talent to make it into the final four.

Hilliary 10-50mil net worth? She has made the lower side of that in a single year from her book! I think they are a little low in that estimate!

Quoting Lycomb:

“I’m a lifelong Republican, but will vote Democrat if Romney is the Vice Presidential nominee. Can’t put a fanatical religious extremeist cult member a(n) (old) heartbeat away from the Presidency.”

Yeah, and I bet you wanted that religious extremist Huckabee as your President…

Shame on you and your bigotry…Romney is a good man with a great deal of character. He’s a class act. The entire problem here is that conservatives waffled too much and let the mainstream media pick our candidate for us. Just as they chose Obama as their candidate. When are we as citizens gonna wise up?? Stop being lemmings, and get informed!! If you can’t educate yourself about candidates, then please stay home on election day.

And another thing….if you are SICK of this do-nothing Congress that’s leaving all of our butts out here in the wind to suffer, then PLEASE vote them out. The Democrats have done nothing but drag their feet on key legislation since post election 2006…the master plan to get more control of Congress AND gain the White House. Wise up people. You need to decide if you want to live like Europeans in America or take the country back… choose, and choose wisely.

McCain is by far the weakest candidate the Reps could have put up…but at least if he’s at the helm, I can sleep at night. Enough said.

It’s an insult comment. Lds people never get money from the church. You have No idea what you are talking about. They are the Only Church that never ask money from community or government funding when they build the church buildings like other Christian church they call. Nobody work in the church professionally to preach. They volunteers to do all the church callings as I know of.
If you want to get the correct info. concerning the Church, go to the official site: lds.org
Mitt Romney worked hard and becomes what he is. He earned what or who he is now!

If you democrats want to be like him, work hard instead of depending on someone’s tax (welfare money). Get good educations and work hard! Build the happy family that is the success of who He is.

Be educated, be wise, be honest, be smart, be prayful, be and be………..

I believe that Mitt is more qualified to be the president of the U.S. than others!
I wait for 2012. but now hope he will be a VP to Mccain 08′.

Mccain/Romney 08′

Mitt Romney is the best possible choice McCain could have on the ticket in November — just HURRY UP & DO IT! Romney would make this a ‘complete ticket’, past Governor of a large state, his financial experience combined with McCains’ experience in the Senate AND the fact JN them both for years! No surprises in our future when they are concerned!

sooo… - that means that 18% of Romney’s wealth went to the drain & he’s not even complaining
Clinton’s debt is 24% of her wealth- she could do exactly the same-
just look and compare who really wants to serve the country-

Comment by CC

Bill Clinton has made over a hundred million dollars since leaving office. They have his and hers mansions, they should absorb the debt too.

If Romney’s on the ticket,I’ll either write Huckabee in or stay home
