McCain calls (part of) Obama trip “political”

GRAND HAVEN, MI — While his campaign opened up a new front on Sen. Barack Obama today in calling his planned trip abroad an international “campaign rally,” it seemed initially today that Sen. McCain was contradicting his own message.

During an interview with Fox News Channel today, McCain Communications Director Jill Hazelbaker attacked Obama’s upcoming trip to Iraq, Afghanistan and a number of European nations.

“Let’s drop the pretense that this is a fact-finding trip and call it what it is–the first of its kind campaign rally overseas,” she said in a clip the campaign put up on You Tube and sent out to reporters (above). During a later appearance on MSNBC she also called the trip “one giant photo opportunity…not designed to inform his world view.”

But when he was asked about the comments aboard his bus this afternoon, McCain appeared to disagree with Hazelbaker’s statement.

“I’m glad that he is (traveling overseas) and pleased that he is going to Iraq for only the second time and going to Afghanistan for the first time,” McCain said. “I can only give you my opinion, and I will talk to (Hazelbaker). But the fact is, I’m glad that he’s going to Iraq and I think it’s - I’m glad that he’s going to Afghanistan. It’s long, long overdue, if you want to lead this nation and secure our national security.”

The dissonant message led the campaign to organize an impromptu outdoor press conference this afternoon so McCain could clear it up once in for all. His message: the Iraqi and Afghanistan legs of Obama’s trip seem legitimate while the European portion appears to be a photo opportunity.

“As we all know Senator Obama is about to go on a trip to Iraq, Afghanistan and I understand other countries. The focus of our conversation today on the bus was about Iraq and Afghanistan and what Senator Obama does in the other countries, whether political rallies or not, obviously would then give them a political flavor to say the least,” McCain told reporters after a quick campaign stop at Pronto Pup, a local corn dog joint in Western Michigan.

“If he has political rallies in other places, then obviously it’s a political trip….apparently it’s gonna be (a photo opportunity) if he is going to have rally in Germany at the Brandenburg Gate, which is what is being publicly stated. Of course if you have political rallies then its a political event,” he added.

This is getting dangerously close to ruining McCain;s “clan” campaigner rep. Let Obama go overseas and to Iraq and watch the inevitable gaffes occur. That’s all…

First McCain opposes his own immigration bill, now he’s flip-flopping on everything. Why don’t we have a REAL Republican in this race? This guy is worse than Kerry!

Uh, pretty sure anywhere politicians go, it’s political.

For John McCain, the phoniest political construct of modern media hype to claim that he’s anything but political is total garbage.

He waffles this way and that, telling the media what they want to hear, all for the political spotlight.

For anybody to pretend McCain is about integrity or his beliefs instead of politics just needs to look at his record of breaking the laws of his own legislation and now being against legislation that had his own name on the bill… all because Republicans now need him to be more conservative in order to run for president.

This very statement by McCain is about politics.

So let’s stop pretending… hmmm McCain and Fox News.

Politicians are about politics. Those who say otherwise are lying… probably just because they aren’t all that sophisticated at what they do and need the help of the media to fair and balance things out for them.

Senator Mc Cain your recent trip to colombia and Mexico were just fact finders right not photo opportunities. You and your team even has a calendar up complaining that Senator Obama has not gone to Iraq and now that he takes the initiative to go you complain because you know the top of the line press corps is going along? By top of the line I of course leave out Fox since they just seem to be hired Republican guns or is it goons. Barack Obama has been calling for us to focus on Afghanistan and Pakistan since forever and now George W. and Senator Mc War are concurring amazing? No just par for the politics as usual crowd.

As a decorated Vietnam veteran who’s son an 82nd Airborne paratrooper just returned from Iraq I am confident that there are enough Americans wanting theright thing to happen in effect us getting our tails the hell out of Iraq and putting more heat where it always belonged in Afghanistan.

VOTE BARACK OBAMA YES WE CAN AMERICA SI SE PUEDE

Of course both are political trips…Obama by giving his impressions of Iraq BEFORE he left signaled completely that this “fact finding” mission was not at all a fact finding mission but simply to ’show his face and meet the military”…(that group of people he really does not truely respect)….and “completely political’ as Patton said in the movie…..and the trips else where in europe are 110% political. Obama is the most two-faced politician in american history……his manuvers are so obvious and calculated to reflect a complete far left liberal who will change his stripes easily before and after an election…you thought you could trust him…..well you are looking at someone who changes with the polls and is an example of a variety outward observations but with no integrity….How can anyone expect in the future to trust what ever Obama says. And worst yet, by making opinions and impressions before all the facts are in makes for a extremely dangerous manager of any type let alone president. The American voters MUST SEE THIS for the ruin of our nation will affect all for many years to come.

Obama’s trip to Europe will draw thousands and will prove that he can not only unite Americans, but the world. Just imagine thousands of Europeans throwing flowers at Obama. If McCain went there, it wouldn’t be flowers they would throw, but it would be a great photo op. I dare Mccain to go to Europe.

Of course these visits are political….Obama signaled to all that message when he gave his impressions and conclusions BEFORE he left to go to Iraq…..thus all visits are truely political and not “fact finding’…..if they were truely fact finding he would reserved his conclusions for after the visit. This reminds me of the Patton view of a meeting with english general as being…’strictly political”. Obama will meet with the military but he truely has cast away any idea of learning anything…by saying it is fact finding with already made conclusions Obama has totally disrespected those military commanders….Obama does not care what he hears…he already stated he did not support the surge and believes iraq is but a back-water to the war on terror. Obama has truely become clueless about the fight on terror.

Political? Nooooo! How could it be? Good grief, are people losing their minds? Any overseas trip by ANY politician is both fact finding and photo op. The right wing elite press has their panties in a big twist over Obama and the fact that their arch enemies from ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN (insert your favorite network to whine about) are covering Obama and less so for McCain’s trip. And how, may I ask, is this instantly perceived and determined as “biased”?

Fact is, it’s Obama’s first real foray into this arena and not McCain’s. I am sure the press will be looking just as hard for Obama gaffes as they are good reactions that hosts will have. But I know it just eats at the right wing press to be feeling left out of the party. So quit whining and send Britt Hume, for crying out loud. Now that wasn’t so hard, was it. Or send that pinhead ambush guy that O’Reilly trots around.

Senator Obama said he was going on this trip to LISTEN to the commanders and the troops in both Iraq and Afghanistan. What is wrong with that?? McCain calling Senator Obama’s trip to the various countries political is crazy since his own trips to Canada, Columbia, and Mexico were political. My goodness, he even called Senator Obama a flipflopper!! Actually, McCain was campaigning in these countries; didn’t he discuss job outsourcing and trade with the Colombian President?? Why is he discussing these issues? He is NOT the President! And what business does McCain have demeaning his oponent on foreign soil?? McCain is one confused dude. Senator Obama in his 2002 speech was totally against going to war in Iraq, none of the terrorists that attacked the towers were from Iraq; there were NO proven WMDs; the inspectors had been there and had found nothing, however, bush and cronies insisted there were WMDs decided to attack anyway. Our troops have found no WMDs, weapons yes, WMDs no. Senator Obama oulined the consequences of going to war in Iraq. You know, if you google Senator Obama’s 2002 speech and compare it to what has gone on in Iraq and how our country has been negatively affected by this war, you will find the good senator from Illinois was right on target on what he foresaw before the war even started. You know what I call this? Wisdom and Vision. McCain, on the other hand, predicted the war would be easy and that it would be over in days, he stated this when we attacked. Yes, knocking Saddam out of power was relatively easy, and the administration did not plan nor did they prepare for what happened after Saddam fell. later in 2003, McCain again predicted the was was almost over and that it would be over in weeks or a few months. In 2004, McCain predicted the war would be over very soon. My question is: Where was McCains wisdom and Vision? He had none at that time, and he has none now. First it was that we’ll stay there for 100 years or however long it takes; then he said a few weeks ago, that the war would be over in 2013 and our troops would be home in 2013. The latest is that he will bring our troops when he decides when the war is over and will bring the troops home after he makes that decision. Flippity, floppy, flipflop, anyone?? McCain simply cannot be trusted. Oh, he recently said he knew how to fight wars!! Really, where did he get that experience? By being shot down and becoming a POW??? Umm. In his addled mind, that’s what he apparently believes since he keeps talking about it.

Didn’t you folks read the article on Senator Obama having 300 people giving him reports on the world’s happenings, includting what is going on in Iraq and Afghanistan? Senator Obama is on top of things, he is not blowing hot air!! He is keenly aware of what is happening in these two countries. Based on this specific knowledge and awareness, he gave his Iraq and Afghanistan speech a few days ago. You really do not get it, do you? This man is extremely intelligent, smart, and informed. Sure, he makes some gaffes, but doesn’t everyone?? Senator Obama is a human being just like the rest of us, noone is saying he is perfect! He himself has said “I am not a perfect man.” So really, it is the folks that do not like him that call him the Messiah and expect perfection of him. It does not take much for these bigots to find fault in him, they’ll berate him if he crosses his eyes! Enough said. Other than McCain and his campaign are being hypocritical.

WHEN Obama makes any gaffes on this trip, you can be sure the media will not let them be publicized. They will excise, if necessary, anything he says or does that would reflect negatively on this junior Senator. This they have done repeatedly in the past and they have no reason to change now. This trip is just a big publicity stunt, orchestrated by the Obama campaign and eagerly latched onto by the ‘unbiased’ media.
Why don’t they just come out and put Obama stickers on their mics?

Forget about FOX News’ talking points on the Obama trip to Europe, it all a ploy, lies, and distortions!

At the risk of being redundant, America’s economy will continue its downward decline, without any appreciable rectification, should we decide to prolong the policies of the last seven years by electing John McCain. The economy is driven by the globalization of technology. Per exemplar, we are immersed in the technological age of the twenty-first century, and it would be asinine to expect John McCain as our president, to effectively lead us through this technological age. Especially, given his own admission, that he is unable to use the Internet because he lacks the basic fundamentals needed.

I’m not being facetious, John McCain’s time has passed, and his ideas are rooted in a by-gone-era of thinking; America needs a young, robust, intellectually vibrant, patriotic, technologically savvy, and ambitious president to rid us of the country’s current state, and that president should be Harvard graduate, Senator Barack Obama!

Respectfully Submitted,
Mr. Gerald M. Millner

During McCain’s trip, there was something big going on in the United States called the Democratic Primary race. That is why he was not covered as much. McCain going overseas has been seen before, so no big deal and it is probably a good thing more attention was not paid to him considering the gaffes he had not i.e. knowing the difference between Shia and Sunnis who is training who. Recent gaffes with Czechoslavakia, which has not existed in some amount of years (16 years), etc. etc. His foreign policy “expertise” may have suffered more. We know that Bush was a “C student”, McCain graduated the bottom five in his class out of 899. Wow, I vote for an intelligent man who graduated with honors who may actually think before acting. But of course Bush and McCain are oblivious to something called thinking. I guess ignorance is bliss. McCain, my friend, just quit whining!!!!

Oct. 18, 1999 | PHOENIX — GOP presidential candidate John McCain’s wife Cindy took to the airwaves last week, recounting for Jane Pauley (on “Dateline”) and Diane Sawyer (on “Good Morning America”) the tale of her onetime addiction to Percocet and Vicodin, and the fact that she stole the drugs from her own nonprofit medical relief organization.

When you live in glass house, you don’t throw stones.

Mrs. McCain’s position in these terms. She was the privileged wife of a prominent family and spouse of an important politician, a person who had her own position of prestige and power. Should she not be held at least as accountable for her actions as an uneducated inner-city drug user? After all, she could enter drug treatment at any time she chose, unlike many drug users who find themselves in prison.

Moreover, Mrs. McCain was violating a position of trust by stealing from a charitable organization, using its money and medical expertise to fuel her drug use. Is this not morally more reprehensible than simply purchasing drugs illegally?

Finally, Mrs. McCain was the mother of four children at the time she admits to using drugs–between 1989 and 1992. Her children were born in 1984, 1986, 1988 and 1991. In other words, Cindy McCain was using drugs while raising small children, one of whom she adopted while she was an addict. In most states, family services will remove children from a woman who is known to be an active drug addict, and she would certainly not be allowed to adopt a child while addicted.

John McCain is a hawk in the drug war. He advocates stricter drug laws, penalties and enforcement against drug sellers. He has had nothing to say about redressing our punitive approach toward drug users. Of course, McCain also supports family values. Yet if John and Cindy McCain were not well-off and influential, they might not have a family at all. McCain’s lack of concern for street drug users contrasts sharply with the support and understanding his wife received.

McCain and the Republicans are getting desperate and they are trying to set a trap for Obama. If he goes to Iraq and changes his outlook due to the progress over there then McCain is going to say Obama is a flip flopper on this issue. If Obama maintains his original position for a troop withdrawal, then McCain is going to say that Obama hasn’t learn a thing after going to Iraq.

A rational and sensible thinking president had to be flexible in his positions about the state of affairs in this country and the world. Obviously some people don’t get because they are so mired up in the politics.

This is a non-issue just like the Brandenburg gate issue that was started by someone in the Bush administration and promoted by the republican party. I wouldn’t be surprised if Obama makes his speech at that huge soccer stadium in Berlin. I’m told that I could hold up to 125,000 people. WOW!!!!! can you imagine the impact this would have for Obama.

Wait till Obama gets crowds that rival rock concerts. Then we’re going to hear from the Republicans-do you want the Europeans to pick your president? (attack mode). They probably have what if attack scenarios for every possible event. Plus now that they branded him as being out of touch on foreign policy because he HASN’T traveled, the new mantra will be “Why is he traveling overseas when there are so many pressing problems here at home? He’s so out of touch - on a holiday in Europe when Americans are suffering.”

It just goes on and on and on…

The reality is that the Republicans are worried that this trip will provide a huge political advantage for Obama, because lets remember, the majority of Britains and Germans were against the war in Iraq, and many of them feel like Bush espouses an imperalistic perception of the U.S. (The way he threaten countries with economic sanctions).

Obama in essence, is the anti-thesis of Bush. McCain is, well, more of the same as Bush. Everytime Bush travels to Germany and Britain there are huge protests. You may not see it on American tv but I live in London and have travelled to Munich frequently and the sentiment against Bush is very bad. You will see the oppposite when Obama travels over there.

The Republicans will attempt to demonize the Europeans if Obama receives a positive reception.

This is the era of instant news coverage from 147 different news outlets the second anything happens. McCain is a stiff. He needs to loosen up & take the stick out of his behind & show some charisma. If this were a boxing match Obama would be played by Floyd Mayweather Jr & McCain would be played by Arturo Gatti. It’s not even a contest.
We, as a people, need to focus of the real issues at hand & stop whining about the media. None of you know 4 sure what kind of president either of these cats are gonna be. Personally I’m backing Obama cuz I think he’s the real deal.

Obama’s trip confirms his view of the world. He wants a global approach to everything, including his political policy. Does he respect the sovereignty of nations? Ther si a distinction between just visiting a country perhaps to assess how you might approach the relational aspect there, and making a campaign rally in a specific country. Why should American leaders inject their politics in foreign nations? Is that the height of political ambition? Be a global president?

The media follows Obama because people watch the darn TV when he’s on. They would follow an alligator around with a camera if people would watch.

McCain is not getting covered because he’s like watching paint dry. I’m not sure which is cause and effect, but the only thing he does that gets covered is call Obama names. Maybe he calls him names because that gets his picture on the tube.

I know he spoke at an electric car plant and at the NAACP, but I don’t care. I read his plans on his website and I’ll be darned if I can figure out how the country is going to change from the Bush years.

It seems to me that what we get with John McCain is Bush with better prosecution of our military conflicts - which most of us don’t want to be in in the first place. We get it.

All I can say is this one of the recent polls showed that if the election were today out of 600 people polled this is what they found. If it was between Obama, McCain, or a third term with Bush who would the people vote for. Well 2% were for Obama, 16% were for McCain, and 82% were for Bush a Third term. The media does not like Bush so they are always finding fault with him yet the people in this poll spoke on who they wanted to see win in the election. It just show us that both Obama and McCain need to step up to the plate and show us what they can do to make this great Nation like it once was. You know it is like everything else the Media wants us to hear certain things and they never report the news of the events that are successful. I blame the media more for all of the negative things that are happening in the world and not those things that make one proud to be an American. This is why I will only listen to Fox News as well as Glen Beck the let us know exactly what is going on. So thank you Fox News.

Duh, let’s get real, they are politicians, unless they are traveling on vacation, it is political and even then, there may be something they have to do that could be considered “political”. This is what they do whether on a trip as a senator or a presumptive nominee. Everytime McCain went overseas, it could be considered political. He has done everything that he is now blasting Obama for. You cannot have it both ways McCain. Stop whining, it is just psychological.

He is just really worried about the attention Obama will get. Unites States is really hurting as far as respect around the world. We used to be well respected and now many countries just wave us off and say we have no room to talk about anything. Anything that can boost the U.S. is helpful.

The Iraq war is very unpopular, not only in the U.S. but abroad. So anyone against it is going to be cheered.

The only trap set for Obama is the very one he sets for himself by being shallow, disrespectful of the troops’ sacrifices and making conclusions before all the facts are in. All of these liberal “virtues” of “shooting himself in the foot” are examples of inexperience, arrogance and a sense of “saviorness” which is well beyond anything imaginable of anyone other than a demigod or the like. Whether this persona is being created by his handlers/operatives and/or exaggerated by the “in the tank media” or are truely real is immaterial…it has no place in presdiential politics for it suggests an pure propaganda approach to “sell Obama” to the voters reflecting attributes which are not compatible with a President.

Bush is a visionary when it comes to understanding the threat of islamafacism. Europe does not yet see the threat or are too cowardly to say it.

It sounds like the obama court jesters are out in force today. Obamas trip is all about obama and nothing more. The man could not care about the war and the american people. He is the biggest narssasist I have ever seen in the public eye. The big problem is he has everyone duped into thinking that he is worth listening to and voting for. I really think we are in trouble.

Who cares who the Europeans prefer … if it was up to France, our next President would be Jerry Lewis. How about focusing on who has the experience, judgement and character to protect us and bring prosperity to Americans … not someone who in the eleventh hour, finally tries to establish foreign policy credentials, in a one week visit, as a transparent political ploy to get himself elected. Where was Obama, when he was supposed to chair the congressional committee on Afghanistan, and never had a single meeting. Why did Obama vote ‘present’ over 100 times in the senate? Even if he manages a political rally in the Roman Coliseum, he’s still just an inexperienced politician, who is not qualified to be President of the United States of America !!!
