Some help from the Hill…
ALBUQUERQUE, NM — As Sen. McCain prepares to question his Democratic rival’s foreign policy credibility in a speech this morning, he got an assist today from a colleague on Capitol Hill.
Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) sent a letter to Sen. Obama Tuesday pointing out that the Illinois Democrat has yet to hold a hearing on Afghanistan even though he chairs a European Affairs subcommittee with oversight of NATO and asking for one after Obama returns to the states.
“With oversight of NATO relations and its role in Afghanistan, I believe it is time for us to focus closely on these issues. As Ranking Member of your Subcommittee on European Affairs, I would welcome a chance to hold a hearing on NATO’s mission in Afghanistan upon your return,” writes DeMint. The argument is one of the cases the McCain camp has adopted from the Clinton campaign, which repeatedly brought up the fact that Obama never exercised his subcommittee’s oversight power in regards to Afghanistan.

Subcommittee on European Affairs
Committee on Foreign Relations
U.S. Senate
Washington, DC 20510
Dear Senator Obama,
In the coming days, I understand you will travel to Afghanistan for the first time and visit with a few of our European partners. Like my travels to these regions, I trust this trip will afford you a unique opportunity to see the facts on the ground firsthand and witness the work of our brave men and women who sacrifice so much to secure our freedom.
In February, I had the privilege of visiting and talking with our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. These brave Americans serve their country with incredible passion, pride and courage. As you know, NATO’s International Security and Assistance Force (ISAF) plays an integral part in the current operations and reconstruction of Afghanistan.
There are concerns about the imbalance between some European nations, their level of commitment to the fight in Afghanistan, and caveats these nations place on their forces in theater. I trust you will become well acquainted with these issues. The Bush Administration has worked hard to maintain and increase the level of forces our European allies have committed to the fight.
However, despite these successes, I am concerned our Subcommittee has not held any hearings on these issues over the last two years. With oversight of NATO relations and its role in Afghanistan, I believe it is time for us to focus closely on these issues. As Ranking Member of your Subcommittee on European Affairs, I would welcome a chance to hold a hearing on NATO’s mission in Afghanistan upon your return.
The success of Afghanistan is critical to the future of NATO and vital to our efforts to defeat Al Qaeda and the Taliban. As the situation in Afghanistan grows more tense, it is time for us to hold a hearing on the mission there. I look forward to working with you to schedule this hearing.
Sincerely,
Jim DeMint

No time to discuss Afghanistan, unless he’s posturing for the election. Just wait til it’s time to discuss Reparations…Bet he’s at every meeting……
How interesting that Obama who believes Iraq and the 20 million are a distraction and believes afganistan is the primary conflict has not felt it necessary to hold any hearings. As big as afganistan is and the small # compared to iraq Obama has this idea it was the more important conflict…he must have his head in the sand. True there is a need to keep surpressed the insurgent there but iraq is mush more important in the bigger picture and even I know this….BUT NOT OBAMA???!!!! Iraq has oil fields which any country would want…not afganistan….iraq has a greater more concentrated population which you can create into a government and get them back on their feet quicker than afganistan…afganistan is more difficult to get about in compared to iraq and iraq is ideally located to keep a protection on the vital oil fields of the neighboring gulf states…..o why does Obama believe all rests on afganistan and not iraq….he truely is in left field. We will get to afganistan after the more important mission in iraq is controlled and it looks like things are improving ther…but iraq being a distraction…Obama needs to take a history lesson.
This article omits the important fact that Joe Biden, Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Relations, said that such a hearing would be held by his full committee, not Obama’s sub-committee. He said that it would always have been the case for such a matter. This fact is reported by all the other news services.
O is incompetent period! Does not matter if he facilitates meetings noe as he should have had to as an elected member of congress and head of the committee. he cannot be trusted period!
Obama wants to be President, and he can not even successfully oversee a Senate Subcommittee?
This is so sad!
So, does that mean that Obama was the head of a commitee, never held any meetings with the commiteee members, and then is going abroad to act on his own accord without the benefit of advisory counsul from the commitee members? I don’t always have the greatest understanding about the how’s and why’s of things, but this just doesn’t schmeck of responsible leadership qualities.
If B.O. makes his plans and decisions about Iraq before He acquires the facts about Iraq..
Does that mean B.O. pees before he unzips?
Joe Biden, Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Relations, said that such a hearing would be held by his full committee, not Obama’s sub-committee. He said that it would always have been the case for such a matter. This fact is reported by all the other news services
Biden can say all he wants the fact is there is a sub-committee for a reason. Are you and Biden saying the sub-committee should never hold a meeting. I am sure the ranking member of the sub-committee knows what the committee is for and what hearings they can and cannot hold.
Just what is the sub-committee duties if not to hold hearings? Bidening is covering Obama butt, but the fact is Obama never held ONE hearing.
The Iraq war was a distraction from going after the people in Afghanistan who attacked us. If we had effectively depolyed our troops on Al Queda while they were in Afghanistan, we might have able to have much more success with the war on terror.
Due to this blunder by Bush, Iraq is now not able to defend itself from Iran or the Al Queda that fled Afghanistan.
If McCain is elected, we are likely to have to go to war with Iran. Then we will have 3 new countries where we will need to have some level of military presence. Clearly, we will have spread ourselves too thin. While our troops are already on their 4th tour of duty in Iraq, where do get the troops to deploy in 3 countries. Where does the funding for these military occupations come from? Iraq is already costing us billions of dollars a month.
Don’t they pre-qualify presidential candidates for basic competence?
How did Obama get to be the dem nominee?
Dump this loser now!
This letter is priceless, McCain should use this right now against B.O. Well done Jim DeMint.
What does it matter if it is a subcommity or a commity? If he is the head of it and has had 2 yrs to hold a meeting to go over issues to submit to the commity and to learn facts yet he did not yet is willing to state his oppion on the very issues he does not go and take care of, then you have all his present votes, and his voting no for HIS own bill, and his no on drilling even though the majority says yes and the fact that ILL is an amnesty state for illigals, and look at the state it is in, it just makes you want to rush out and vote for McCain.
This is not particularly newsworthy. Senator Obama’s records in both his State and U.S. Senate positions clearly show he neglected the responsibilities of both elected offices he held. He did, however, manage to spend an incredible amount of time soliciting support and funding for subsequent campaigns seeking election to a higher office.
Senator Obama is a walking, talking empty suit who has mastered the art of successful campaigning–his lack of qualifications masked by eloquent speeches and contrived incidents that divert voters’ attention away from the serious issues of his lack of performance, poor judgment and questionable integrity.
Typical Obama.
If you love the USA please don’t vote for a democrat!
He hasn’t held even one meeting. That doesn’t surprise me. He hasn’t done much of anything except talk.
Obama do not do his job. He just like to talk about them. No proof of Obama really can do what he is talking about.
Tired of listening to Obama.
Here you go folks…. It’s a shame when the FACTs get in the way of the smears. Typically mud slinging, round two.

“Obama came under fire from party rival New York Sen. Hillary Clinton during the primary for ignoring his committee assignment and not chairing any NATO-related hearings since taking the chairmanship in January of 2007, after his presidential run was already in full swing.
He chaired one hearing in April on nominations.
But has otherwise been engaged with his campaign.
McCain has a similar problem. He is the ranking Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, but has passed his duties, for the most part, off to Sen. John Warner, R-Va., a former chairman and returned only in April to hear testimony from Gen. Petraeus and Admiral Crocker on the status of the surge strategy. When Petraeus was nominated in May for a promotion, to go from leading the multi-national force in Iraq to leading US Central Command, which oversees Iraq and the entire Middle East, McCain did not return to the Hill for the May 22 hearing.
UPDATE: Turns out DeMint, the ranking member, didn’t attend the one hearing — the nominations hearing –Obama chaired from his subcommittee on 4/7. He had the committee chairman, Sen. Richard Lugar, enter a statement into the record for him.
DeMint is the very same Senator who drew boos on the Senate floor when he made all his colleagues stay in town last Friday for votes on the Housing and AIDS bills last Friday and then skipped town himself to attend a wedding.
“
The fact is that unless holding this meeting will do something for the campaign then he can’t be bothered. Our troops don’t matter a bit to him. Only his campaign matters. I am sure the little thorn in his side called Afghanistan should not be treated as if it is important. If more and more of our troops are k illed so be it as long as his campaign survives.
If this doesn’t tell you want kind of president this man will make then all that support him will deserve what they get. Unfortunately people that know what really is important will get the same bad deal.

So AlaskaAnnie - you’re including Biden in with the irresponsible ‘committee members’ - who don’t bother to hold their own committee meetings? Thanks for pointing that out as well. It still doesn’t provide an excuse for Obama, however, for not doing anything about his OWN responsibility to his OWN committee - sub group or not. ‘Personal responsibility’ comes to mind - I believe it’s his own term, or at least the one that he’s been using of late. Don’t miss the point due to semantics.
What this does do, however, is point out that Barack (the ‘community organizer’) is not the so-called change agent he proclaims himself to be; he is merely a cheap suit that agrees to ‘be involved’ in everything…and yet does absolutely nothing. A puppet. A mouthpiece.
The reality is that Obama is a hollow, same-old-same-old politician who thrives on saying anything and thus lives a life of constant re-positioning… just to attempt to gain votes.
‘Real change’. Yeah, right……..
Fox probally won’t put this on but here goes. McCain has missed more than 66% , of the votes in this current congress, including the fact that he did not put in a vote for the GI bill, spoke out strongly against it with Mr. Bush and then in a town hall mtg a few weeks ago tried to take credit for it passing. And Mr. McCain decided to go to a fundraiser instead of voting. Barack has missed 44% and voting on most if not all of the major legislation regardles of the campaign
Some of you really need to do some research before posting on some topics. And the MSM needs to read up before they go putting these one sided stories out. The committee doesn’t make any policy desicions on the war. Where has Demint been in the past 2 years if he was so concerned about this issue? And everything the committee has put for has been struck down by GWB so they can’t achieve much with him in office. The republicans thought the could get a dig in because Obama was pressing them about the dire situation in Afghanistan.
I am an independent non-white voter who is BEGGING America to not elect Obama as President. There are SO MANY reasons if people would just pay attention.
Wake up America! He is an arrogant hypocrite who has proven to be one of the best politicians by managing to con people into believing that he represents “change” and that he’s different when he is really THE typical politician. He struts around like he is already President (remember the Seal??? Sure, it was a one time thing- baloney). He’s a wuss who only appears on media outlets that worship the ground he walks on (not brave enough to do a town hall meeting with John McCain). Obama has demonstrated time and again that he doesn’t have the intestinal fortitude to take criticism. How on earth is he going to handle being President? He has no experience and seems to “regret” an awful lot of his decisions. He spends a lot of time criticizing our country, but doesn’t offer any real solutions.
His speech against the Iraq War was made not while in the US Senate, but in the Illinois state Senate, where he did not have the same information as the US Senators who voted on the decision to go to war. Who knows how he would have voted if given the same information as the US Senate? Yet, he continues to refer to this speech as an example of his superior judgement. It’s like comparing apples and oranges.
What about all of his “Present” votes when he didn’t even have the testicular fortitude to make a hard decision?
Obama will hand our country over to the illegals, terrorists, and European socialists. His supporters should check his voting record. There is not one solid example of bipartisanship in his political history, so what makes people think that he will suddenly become bipartisan and “reach across the aisle?” Oh, because he said he would. He’s already demonstrated over and over again that he’s a lying fake….
I do not find his speeches “inspiring.” He says a lot of nothing and you never know how soon he’ll change his stance after saying it. Watch his unrehearsed answers and you’ll hear a lot of the word “Uhh” in his responses (I counted 14 in a 2-minute clip once). Take the teleprompter away and there’s an empty suit. I can’t listen to him (and his “Uhhs”), his Socialist views, and his mouthy wife for 4 more years.
I could go on, but there’s too much to go into. I can’t even watch the TV news anymore because I’d rather not see St. Obama being lauded by the MSM who are so definitely in the tank for him.
Although I’m not thrilled with John McCain as a candidate, he is still a better choice than Obama. At least you know what you’re getting.
PLEASE DON’T ELECT OBAMA.
Thank you Not a Kool Aid Drinker. Some people do not understand what they wishing.
